Usually I am not very emotionally invested in those races, but seeing how WVA waved Roglič into the right direction, how he slowed down in the turns and difficult parts of the descent looking back to make sure his teammate is still there, doing everything so Roglič won't crash again (still knowing about the nightmares of last year!)... made my heart really go faster. Or to bring it into meme format: He Protec He Attac but most importantly he got Roglič's bac

I don't think a Tour stage over this same terrain would break up the field nearly as much. The quality of the field in the TdF is quite a bit higher.
@winstoncat6785
@winstoncat6785 2 года назад
The tour is generally a crap race to watch compared to the other 2 GT's. imo because they insist on starting with 8 days of pancake flat but dangerous which results in 4 hours of boredom followed by multiple serious crashes and the loss of several contenders before a single mountain or TT has been ridden. Italy and Spain get stuck in pretty much straight away so full fields contest at least a few proper days of GC racing. They are generally more interesting (admit Giro wasn't brilliant last year either).
@GardEngebretsen
@GardEngebretsen 2 года назад
@@winstoncat6785 The Tour usually also has much fewer hard mountaintop finishes than the Giro and Vuelta, which also means for much more boring racing, as its harder to create separation. Some times a mountain stage in the Tour is a huge mountain followed by a 20-25k descent to the finish, which usually nullifies most advantages gained on the top.

I agree. Usually riders are very good at one or two disciplines of cycling. But Wout is good at everything. A bit of a shame that he isn't the pure leader in a team. Imagine his palmares if a whole team would only for him at every race he is attending. Valverde is an example of that, he has a team behind him and thus able to produce top 10s every 2nd raceday throughout his career. Obviously, Wout could be a rider who does not finish ANY race outside of the top 10.

@@chrisko6439 Hasn't Wout literally topped 10 every race day since he started this years, except stage 5 and 7 of PN where he selfdropped? Actually it is even better, he has ridden podium 7/9 race days this year, with the 2 aformentioned self-drops being only ones of the podium. Those are already crazy statistics. If he keeps this up, unbelievable. Theoretically he could make it 13/15 considering the next races he'll do, though that will be incredibly hard.

@@rokstern7042 If he really focused on it, he could become better at GTs. Probably would take away his bunch sprint ability and his srength at the classics. But he has it in him to win an "easy" Giro or Vuelta with enough TT kms. Obviously, he can't wait for the decision at steep mountain top finishes. He needs a team to isolate other GC contendors and then take time on these all day up and down stages. Of course, he won't beat a Pogacar when in form. But Pog cannot race all Grand Tours. Or at least he isn't. Once Roglic has retired or his strength declined, Pog should try for a GT triple - if there is no new challenger we don't know about yet.

Actually my first thought on Roglič not reacting on Yates was that he was taking it easy, not overreacting, but when I saw not much climb left and Yates with a growing gap, I was scared. Luckily for Roglič, he had WvA with him. I think they realize at Jumbo-Visma that this “last stage curse” for Roglič exists and so in the previous stages they let Van Aert drop early to save legs both for classics AND also for this stage. Probably the nervosity fell over Roglič and that might influence his performance. I hope that this victory helps him to overcome this curse…

Roglic has won the UAE tour, Tirreno-Adriatico, the tour of Romandie twice, Basque country twice and the Vuelta 3 years in a row. I'm not saying he isn't nervous, maybe he is nervous for Paris-Nice specifically because of last season but I don't think that he is cursed or that he is worrying too much about not being able to win these smaller tours or even grand tours. I reckon Roglic was either not quite good enough yet (can't really blame him since it's very early on in the season, his goals like LBL or more importantly the TdF are still months away) or Yates is in the best form of his career. I think it's most likely a combination of the two but not really Roglic being nervous or cursed. He only lost Paris-Nice last year due to bad luck and the Tour de France due to a combination of Pogacar being amazingly good and maybe being a bit too cocky beforehand relying on his TT too much when he might have been able to hurt Pogacar more in some mountain stages. Other than that I can't really think of any instances where he lost an important tour when it looked like a sure thing so I don't really see it as a curse personally. Edit: completely forgot about Dauphiné, that one is on me

In a way, the Jumbo response to Yate's thermo nuclear attack was probably the best option. If they had responded with a thermo nuclear chase, Yates or somebody else would have countered with another attack. By letting Yates go and responding with a steady pace, they get to climb steady to the top and just keep Yates in check. Yates doesn't get to rest up because he keeps thinking he can stretch his lead and Primoz and Wout get to work together to keep control. The only risk is that Yates has more in his legs than you can manage, but then you're losing anyway.

I don’t know how BikeExchange will use their climbing domestics in Giro but if they can properly utilize Hamilton, Kangert, Schultz, Howsen etc then Yates may put the ghosts of 2018 to rest. They need to ensure the domestics are in form as well. Yates has been mostly alone in the high mountains last two years (since Haig left)! They have the some real good young climbers as well this season.

Well he fooled me last year after winning Tour of the Alps, he looked so strong. I was all in on him for the Giro and he under-performed aside from Stage 19. So I'm skeptical that March Yates is a good predictor of what May Yates will do.
@chrisrodgers4950
@chrisrodgers4950 2 года назад
This did not come as close to happening as people think. Yates himself stated post race that it was an impossible deficit to make up in one stage , unless Roglic crashes - which he didn’t. Roglic held a big lead on GC the entire time, Yates just made a heroic attack at the end but it really wasn’t that close on the GC. We forget that Wout carried Yates, Martinez, and Quintana the entire last hour of the race and they all refused to help out, so if you take Wout out of the equation Quintana and Yates would’ve had to fight it out taking turns which would’ve taken away from that last attack energy from Yates that made this race look way closer than it actually was. Wout carried everyone and people act like Roglic was the only one that would’ve been dropped had Wout not been there but he carried ALL OF THEM. Who’s to say Yates would’ve had that last attack in him had Wout not carried him up the mountain.

I wonder if Primoz just got too cold. Short sleeves, bib shorts, no gloves. While Yates has long sleeves, gloves, shoe covers, and even a little neck gaiter. Roglic/JV need to plan for a good last stage i.e fit and fresh and not get caught out again. Perhaps they did try to, so what went wrong or what couldn't they fix ? Either fuelling, injury or sickness. Roglic very fortunate to have kept in touch with Yates, without Wout he would have lost the race twice in a row . A great effort by JV, should give Wout a chance for GC in TdeF soon, as he's fresher and younger than Roglic.

Clearly Roglic has anxiety and trauma issues after his loss last year at Paris Nice and his experience at the Tour de France in 2020 when he had a panic attack on the final stage when he saw Pogicar was putting down bigger numbers then him. When you are in panic mode you cannot open your cardiovascular system freely. Pogicar could as he was exuberant and confident and desirous of the win. Roglic unfortunately got captured on his worry that he was letting down all of his teammates at jumbo Visma who had worked so hard for him for the previous three weeks. With this pressure and worry in his mind his cardiovascular abilities shut down The outcome of that race was determined by their different mindsets. In Paris Nice Roglic was unable to have his usual power because he was anxious and in the “trauma zone” worried he would fail again after Yates attacked. With his PTSD activated he could not generate his usual power. Fortunately he had a comforting strong supportive teammate who we could trust and rely on to support and guide him. All traumatized people would well with such supportive helpful guidance to be able to master challenges. C.S.Doyle M.D.

Van Aert can easily get green and still work as a domestique for Roglic in the mountain stages where it's needed. WvA only needs Teunissen as a leadout for sprints, he gets a lot of points in TTs which other green jersey contendors won't get and he can get in a couple breaks in mountain stages where, again, other green jersey contendors have no chance of following him. The only stage where I can see trouble is the one with cobbles.

IMO. some tunnel vision tactics from Ineos. They could have changed tactics for the final stage. Martinez was 1min behind Rog, Yates 1min50. A near impossible deficit for Yates to close. Yates could have played domestique for Martinez with Rowe and Fraille driving the Ineos train
@MichaelBoogerd
@MichaelBoogerd 2 года назад
@@kenosisibambato1558 fraille completely split the leader group on the penultimate climb. I agree Yates should have been used differently, but then Dani Martinez himself made that separation with the attack at 47km to go. At that point it was an individual fight as Adam didn’t follow that move. We were robbed of Dani and Simon trying to work over Wout/Rogla on Col D’Eze… if Dani had got in Simon’s move too, 2 vs. 2.. maybe even Wout wouldn’t have been able to save Rogla. But I agree, Adam Yates wasn’t really used by Ineos during the actual stage - their in-flight tactical decisions have sucked for ages, probably going back to Nico Portal untimely death.

Gaining 22 seconds in 10 seconds actually isnt defying the laws of physics, this is probably an error though in this stage. I actually really wonder how they calculate the time gaps, because they need to somehow estimate how long it takes the guy behind ride up to where the guy in front is. For example, if a car driving at 20m/s drives for 10 seconds past you, while you drive at 5m/s, it would have traveled 150m ahead of you, and this 150m takes you 30s to make up, so no wrong physics there. The time gap calculator must have had a data point where Roglic's speed was not right/too slow.
@toozydude2
@toozydude2 2 года назад
So, for bigger time gaps, like minutes, they would somehow have to estimate the chasing group's speed. Which can be difficult!
