If Mader and Roglic had ridden together for 10km and held off the group, Mader has a beef, but Roglic was putting time into his rivals without any assistance from Mader, he owes him nothing.

True. But a smart guy would recognize that being magnanimous and having allies for later days can come in handy. I would have gone ahead and let him have it if I was in Roglic’s position (i.e., already having stage wins). There’s absolutely no requirement, but road racing is a team sport and it always helps to have friends who will help out when you need it sometimes. On the one hand, it’s not something that can really be criticized, but on the other hand, it’s just a good move sometimes to win friends and influence people.

A couple of things to add as controversial. 1. UCI banning supertuck! 2. Michael Schär Bidon Disqualification at Ronde van Vlaanderen... That brought the bidon discardment issue to the surface again... 3. The dutch womens tactics(or lack off) at the Olympics 4. If track is included - Frederik Rodenberg Madsen crashing into Charlie Tanfield at the Olympics in the semi's, and he whole debacle afterwards. 5. Of course it’s a race; but if one wants to be smart and win the big tours, it always helps to make allies. Roglic would have been smarter to let Mader win (making sure not to let it look like he was gifting the win). Winning friends and influencing people is almost as important as winning races. All of the greatest riders rode with a sense of chivalry and it’s difficult not to notice that popularity is almost as important for being positively regarded in the history books as winning. While one cannot look down on Roglic and criticize him for doing what he’s paid to do, it makes it easier to look up to a winning rider who knows how to be magnanimous at times.

About roglic taking the 30 meter win: you gotta realise, when there are sponsors supporting you to win and represent the company, you should be winning. Secondly, I think it's poor sportsmanship to allow anything less than a natural result - that is, it's an insult to your opponents ability to let them win. By getting beaten, the rider will strive to get better; that's how sports work.
@Catcrumbs
@Catcrumbs 2 года назад
Even though that principle is essentially ubiquitously held throughout other sports, it's a minority position in pro road cycling - at least in the absolute sense. The multiple prizes on offer in stage races in particular lend themselves to 'conspiring' amongst the riders. Negotiating and trading favours have been a part of road cycling's culture since the start.
@TheMASDrummer

It’s certainly not outrageous and Roglic is under no obligation to let Mader have the stage; but from a long term tactical standpoint, gaining allies for later can be extremely helpful. Road racing is ultimately a team sport and having “teammates” that aren’t on your team could make a difference in the future. The riders who are the most well regarded in cycling history tend to be those who ride with a sense of chivalry and who are occasionally magnanimous to others in the peloton; so it pays to win friends and influence people in the sport overall. Ultimately, the peloton is a workplace and it helps to have allies and supporters and not enemies in your workplace. If I were in Roglic’s shoes (already having stage wins), I would have let him have it. Not because he should, but because could (in a sense, “gifting” a stage shows power too; but in a way that is helpful in gaining allies. It can actually help further a sense of dominance more than actually beating someone directly).

Great recap! Anyway, I got some points to add ;) The most controversial moments/affairs in cycling in 2021 for me were... 1) The UCI banning the supertuck and other "non standard" cycling positions for reasons of safety concern and harshly punishing riders (like phenomenal Richard Carapaz). Many people (including top cyclists and sports commentators) called out the double standards to hold individual riders responsible for everything and punishing them for every little transgress while the race organisers still were poorly controled and the set ups of many races (lacking barriers, wrong barriers, downhill too fast spints, cars and people coming too close) are still inadequate and dangerous. 2) During the ITT olympic race the German national trainer was filmed by a camera (and seen on live TV) screaming racist comments and insulting cyclists of colour. This resulted in a huge shit storm with many trainers, commentators and cyclists speaking against it, but the national cycling federation at first didn't take any actions. Many fans felt like they tried to wriggle out of the affair without addressing the racism problem cycling in fact has and that sparked even more controversy. At the end he was suspended, but there were still voices defending him. 3) The belgians dissapointing in the world championships althought they were considered favourites. But in my opinion it wasn't the race itself which was a disgrace but the blame game afterwards, which was constantly kept alive by both the riders and the teams as well as the fans. 4) Michi Schär being disqualified for "littering" during the Ronde van Vlaanderen. Almost all fans and fellow riders deemed this to be wrong and he gained much support, and I don't think the UCI rulemakers did come out well out of that. 5) Of course we can't miss the Dutch women's humiliation in the olympic road race! Again, it was not so much them not winning that caused controvery but how unbelieving and unprepared they reacted to their defeat, thinking they had won first. Additionally they did not display the respect toward the winner that Kiesenhofer inarguably had deserved and blamed the lack of radio communication, which in the eyes of many fans showed their hubris and lack of fair sportsmanship.

He was so crafty got some similar help on motirolo I think in 2015 Giro after fighting back from a puncture, I think primoz learned because he worked great with Gaudu on penultimate stage to win Basque Country and handled that Vuelta stage with Bernal to perfection I thought. He got every ounce of effort and help before taking that incredible stage. I honestly don't think Primoz would do that in 2022 if in same circumstance genuinely. I think one of the big ones was in the Tour De France that the finish areas at one of the stages was way too tight with a major crash finish and they had on an open flat day the next day everyone ride slow to protest, slow enough the Scooters/Mopeds could barely keep upright. Yes, that was big one to the point they had to at the last minute at another stage change the finishing route for the riders in a town not made to handle the Tour De France as the second route was tight but not super tight. Town was also so small most of the teams had riders sleep on the bus.

If I remember correctly it was Powless & Elisonde with him at there were long stretches on that climb where none of them seemed to be wanting to take turns and just putting each other to sleep. If he wouldn't have allowed the pace to drop up that climb for such long stretches the favorites would've never been even in the mix for the stage win... having already won 2 stages, Roglic could've given out a present there but you can't blame him for not doing so imho. In the end it all worked out & Mader won 2 fantastic stages in other races.

Hey which game theory video did you watch on the amstel gold womens race? Because I always wondered how a game theoretic analysis of cycling would look like.

P-N, stage 3 - every person in that race should be riding for first individually or first as a team. Of course it's necessary for Primose to ride hard for first.

Whats the point of racing if theres "gift wins"? Whats next participation trophies. Give me a break. Another great video from LR 👍

I don't mind that gift wins are a thing, I think it's a nice gesture. But I agree that to expect one is stupid and entitled. To expect a racer not to race in a race because you feel like you deserve the win... smh. You deserve the win if no one else can beat you.

Roglic did what he is meant to do: take wins. If it was a teammate sure let him win. But if it is from another team, no mercy. The only exception is if there is already a friendly relation between the riders or such. The response to Bouhanni was fine, the response to the later incidents was just lacking/non-existent. Honestly this is just a problem with the UCI, sometimes acting really harshly and other times just not. And especially with for example Alaphilippe I wouldn't be surprised they just don't want to do anything to the world champion unless it just can't be ignored. Lopez was at fault. It just makes sense to tell him to stop pacing. His pacing didn't achieve anthing but blowing himself up (he was still losing time, at best he kept the gap at the same time). He could better safe his legs a bit to protect his (lower) position in the GC the next day in the ITT and drop back to a teammate/a group where others ride with/for him. At Amstel it was to me quite clear in the end (when having looked into it). The finishline on the road likely hasn't been drawn fully perpendicular to the last stretch of road the riders need to take. The official finishphoto should be perpendicular otherwise you give riders at one end of the road an advantage. So what they do? They started at one side of the road right at the edge of the finishline (as should be done) and then just went perpendicular with the road (being maybe a few cm from the finishline at the other side of the road. Now this imo is exactly as should be done and it isn't like this 3-5cm is going to change how a rider sprints, at that speed it is just being lucky or unlucky period and this would always be the case in a photofinish. As for Wout being told so early, I believe the radio or something said he won and he got told then he won through his ear piece (possibly just based on the very first images we could see, likely live images of the sprint), not long after you see him not being sure he won, taking quite some time untill he was officially notified. On the finishing photo it was actually quite clear he won. When looking at the picture of the official finish photo, you can see he won by the naked eye (though you need to look really closely), so for a computer program that analyzes pixels, there is no contest. And finally the official finish photo is always final. Only when that photo isn't distinguisable enough or there is non present (like in lower races) there is a possibility for both riders to either redo the last km or to agree to both win (I believe that is a possibility at least).

How about Patrick Lefebvre and his misogynistic comments regarding Bennett and also women's cycling in general? And Deceuninck's departure from Quick Step to Alpecin-Fenix as punishment (and Decueninck's desire to tap the women's cycling market).

Deceuninck left quickstep because they couldn’t pay enough to stay on. Soudal are replacing them in 2023
@MDP1702
@MDP1702 2 года назад
From what I gathered Deceuninck left because Lefevre wants to win a grand tour with Remco in the coming years, which would be more costly than just going for stage/day wins. Apparently Lefevre also wanted a five year sponsor deal (up untill 2025), just like last time, but the Deceuninck didn't wanted that (again). And Levefre also goes into women's cycling from what I heard, though not under the quickstep branch but another team.
@johnandrews3568
@johnandrews3568 2 года назад
Deceuninck's CEO alluded to 'Patrick being Patrick' and then wanting to get into women's cycling. I firmly believe PL is now going to have a women's team because he HAS to not because he WANTS to. I know Soudal is coming in but that also leaves PL with only QS for 2022. Good luck with that. Regardless, PL and his asinine comments per my OP still stand as controversial.

Patrick was right. He calls a spade a spade. Bennett complained about how bad he had it then went back to that team. It is the same as a man or woman going back to a partner who is abusive after complaining about how 'bad they had it'. Womens cycling brings pennies back to the sponsors. All my gf's on social media make WAY more than the top paid female riders do.
