Great song...follow Foxes & Fossils for some great remakes.

Foxes and Fossils are by far the winners of the 4 groups performing this. It's actually not a surprise since that group not only has some of the best vocalist out there, but very high notch musicians as well.....but then many people already know that. Thanks so much for posting this.

Foxes and Fossils sound the best to me. High energy, lots of punch, great band, great harmonies, and love everything about the artistic character of Maggie Adam's voice as well as her passionate expression of emotions for this song. She and Sammie are so tight together.

I'm not about to disrespect Linda Ronstadt, whose version is fabulous. But huge credit to Foxes and Fossils for cranking out that masterpiece in a parking lot. It's one thing to nail those harmonies in a studio with multiple takes; but live in a parking lot? Wow.

Excellent putting up all four versions side by side. First, the creativeness of the Hollies, the vocals of Linda (i’m a huge fan since ‘60s) that sets a new standard, and then…and then there are the God’s and Goddesses of Foxes & Fossils (no relations)….my God their vocals are as good as any, and realize this was a live version recorded IN A PARKING LOT!. I’m sorry folks, but F&F drops the mic on this set. The harmonies of Sammie and Maggie are second to none.

I prefer the Linda Ronstadt version. But you have to give it to the Hollies for coming up with such an innovative arrangement.

Placing Maggie and Sammie with Foxes and Fossils with these other greatest performers is really a lift to this ole heart of mine. They rate right up there with even Linda, and I thought I would never love anyone as much as her! Linda was my heart attack all through my seventies and beyond!

Hearing all four shows me why I love the Linda Rondstadt version. She has such a beautiful rasp and energy in her voice. It's literally music to my ears and I love everything she does. This is not a dis on the others all of them are talented.

There is a live version of Linda doing this in 1995 on youtube.Nobody but nobody is in the same league.Not a pro recording either. It is remarkable,stunning.

All good, but Linda really sells it. Exemplary vocal. That said, F&F take the cake on just about any cover they put their minds and voices to- and theirs is a live performance that is flawless! Been following them for years now, and recruited my current band based on their model. They are amazing!

The Evie Sands Motown style is quite interesting. I've never heard that one before. Ronstadt is awesome, of course, and sounds like the model used for the F&F version, which is itself awesome. Thanks!

I haven't seen this mentioned in other comments, but not only was the Foxes & Fossils version recorded live in a parking lot- the girls were still in high school!

While the Hollies version was a huge hit, it was recorded and released AFTER the Evie Sands version, which was a minor hit in the US and chronologically, should lead of this set Four great versions of a truly wonderful song. I was 10 years old when the Evie Sands version first hit the charts. I saw the incomparable Linda Ronstadt perform Eagles-flavored version live in the late 1970, and refresh reboot by F&F performed literally in a parking lot is exceptional too. I Can't Let Go is an example of a great song that transcends time. Thanks for posting.

I listened to all the other artists that have sung this and NONE of them come close to the F&F version. Such a treat to listen to the great musicians and talented vocals of F&F. I’m a fan for life.

Thanks for these, Sonny. I like all three of these versions, with a distinct nod towards The Hollies' - because it was the first one I ever heard - but Foxes and Fossils' is as good as it can get. They're excellent!

Evie Sands has had one of the most misfortune-filled careers of any performer. The test pressing of her debut single "Take Me For A Little While" was STOLEN by a promoter and given to Jackie Ross, who cut and released her own version before Sands's team could recover from the theft. The Ross version became the hit. Then of course the Hollies overshadowed her take on "I Can't Let Go" in 1966. In '67 she switched record labels and was on the verge of a smash with "Angel Of The Morning" but the label went bankrupt after the initial pressing of the single, and Merrilee Rush went Top Ten with her version (the tune of course hit #4 in 1981 with Juice Newton singing). Songs Sands composed and recorded in the 1970s have been subsequently covered by everyone from Beck to Barbra Streisand, the Weather Girls to Frankie Valli, Shirley Bassey, Helen Reddy, Dusty Springfield, Dobie Gray and Dionne Warwick. She's still working; her latest album features a song with former members of Translator ("Everywhere That I'm Not") and Belle & Sebastian.

Smart move for Foxes and Fossils to use Linda's updated version of this great song. It is more timeless than the other arrangements although all are quite good.

Great song! I had never heard the one by Foxes and Fossils, or any song by them, but I will follow the recommendations of other commenters here and look for more by them. Another version I know of is by Nobody's Children from the Washington, DC, area - played on the radio there in 1968.

Thanks for putting all four versions of the song out there to listen to together. I had thought that Linda would win but Maggie comes out on top. The depth of her voice and the emotion put into the song shows when listening next to Linda's version. In addition, Maggie's version is recorded live - so there's no overdubbing or breaks which makes it more remarkable.

Wow. Hearing Maggie up against these other ones really shows how good she is! I can't say I'd heard any of these versions until now, except for Foxes and Fossils, although the Nobody's Children version linked in a comment does sound familiar.

Thanks for putting all 4 versions in one video! I heard the Linda Ronstadt version first on the radio when it came out in 1980 (Mad Love album), then the Hollies version a couple of decades later. I was pleasantly surprised when I first heard the Evie Sands version on the RU-vid a few years ago, but I was blown away by the live performance by Foxes and Fossils a couple of years back. All four versions are wonderful - the Hollies version is the only one that's available as a karaoke track though.

Hollies was introduced to the US audiences before the Beatles but they failed to attract the US fans. I think because of the their promoter failed in the State. On the other hand, Roy Orbison advised them how to do when they go to the State and also he wrote about the Beatles can be top in the US.

F&F does a straight remake of Ronstadt, who covered it in her style, making minor changes to the Hollies version. The Hollies made significant and incredible changes to the original. It's a bummer the recordings are out of order. (Disclosure: Huge Hollies fan here who loves F&F, really likes some of the early Evie Sands material, and thinks Ronstadt is clearly talented, but just ok, I guess.)
