The Cube was strange because I don't think people noticed how much they played it at the time. One day I was looking at my games and realized I used this system A LOT! So asked my friend if he was playing a Cube a lot? We started naming games: Luigi, Rogue, Skies, RE4, Tales, Paper Mario, and it went on and on. Not to mention spinning up Kart or Smash when people were over. I don't know if it was the release cadence or what but man I've beat so many games on Cube.

1. NES - nostalgia for me. I love how simple and straightforward the games are. 2. Dreamcast - has so many fun games, especially multiplayer games that hold up all these years later 3. Switch - Nintendo’s greed keeps down the Switch. Switch tax and can’t play digital games on the go on multiple handhelds. 4. PS5 - sometimes you just want to play something beautiful and shiny 5. SNES - great great game library, I just hate how 16 bit games sound. Same goes for Genesis. Everything sounds kinda garbled and squishy. Hard to explain.

Hmm, my five favorite game consoles of all time? 1.) Switch 2.) Turbo Duo 3.) 3DO 4.) Sega Genesis/CD/32X 5.) PlayStation I know, strange list. People clown on me for loving the 3DO but, there is so much nostalgia for that console for me. Such fun times with games like Escape From Monster Manor, Hell, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Road Rash, I loved it and the quality of the build on the Panasonic FZ-1 was so good. I always wanted a TurboGrafx-16 when it released and also was my first console I owned that was just mine. Not a shared console with someone else. I got one for Christmas of '91, I think. Got Splatterhouse from my grandparents. That reaction, "On God, Chuck! What did we buy him?" I was not allowed to play it anymore until Christmas was over...lol. The Duo is the best of it with the CD Rom built in. So special. Other consoles are obvious why. Such fun with these. On a side note, yes, I loved the Sega CD and 32X. I consider them part of the Genesis, sorry. Such a fun time to be a gamer heading from 16 bit onto 32 bit. So many risks and new ideas. Oh, and I loved your video. Made me remember how much fun gaming was back in the 90's and early 2000's. Thanks for that. I miss FuncoLand.

Loved your story, dude! I had a similar run as you. Instead of Atari we had the Intellivision. That was my first console. Back in those days for gaming it was mainly the Apple II for me. Then the NES, got a Super NES around the time Link to the Past came out. In the mid 90s I was all in on PC gaming. So I was playing stuff like Doom, Command and Conquer, Duke Nukem 3D, and I was getting my football gaming fix with a game called Football Pro 95 and then 98. Then of course in the late 90s I was literally only playing one game: StarCraft. I had a PS1 and a N64 late into the 90s but I only had a few games for them. I bought a PS2 on layaway and loved that system. That might be my all time favorite console with the SNES in a very close second. I was still into PC gaming as well and still am. I'm probably done with consoles now. The Switch has been amazing, but Sony and Xbox are not the same as they used to be supporting games that encourage some scummy practices by developers that I am just done with. My Evercade and Steam Deck get more use than my Xbox or PS5 does.

I've been gaming since the late 70's when my dad got an Apple II computer and the games ran off cassette tapes, so I've seen it all over the years. My personal favorite that did it all with amazing sound, graphics, innovations, sound, controller, etc., would have to be the Super Famicom/SNES. To this day, I still discover new titles, amazing fan translations, as it is the system that keeps on giving, as the library is second to none.

I think my top 5 would be SNES, Switch, PS3, PS4 and TG16. NES would normally be a no brainer, but most of the NES stuff I had to have is available on Switch Online (and to a degree most of the SNES stuff) or in established collections (Mega Man, Castlevania, Contra). SNES still remains #1 for me because there's a few titles missing from Switch only on that console that are near and dear to me.

I love this kind of discussion… not because it’s a “top this/that” but because it gives historical context. What you experienced when it was all “brand new to market” That being said… this is my timeline of consoles: Just some quick context… we were pretty broke growing up, if we had games, we got them through questionable means, or hustled to get them. All the rest is borrowing, trading and renting. 1981 (4yo) Atari 2600 - My dad was still alive at this time and he worked at a post office and my mom was a florist. With inflation, this bish would have cost them about $900 adjusted to 2024… so my guess was they put it on lay away or it “fell off the back of a truck”. We had a surprising amount of games (maybe 16 I can recall). I think a bunch of them came from my aunt who worked at Sears who either had a great discount or she got a 5 finger discount. I have picture of myself playing the Atari 2600 as a 4yo. My favorites were Adventure, Night Driver, Warlords, Yars Revenge and Krull. I did also like Raiders of the Lost Ark but if didn’t make much sense to us at the time. 1988 (11yo) NES - I remember feeling like the last kid I knew that got an NES. NES was a common bond among children my age. If you had an NES you were immediately part of that clique and were welcomed and everyone wanted to know what games you had. This system wasn’t just an industry changer, it was an industry saver. Within a couple of years, it felt like almost 100% of kids my age knew what a Nintendo was, wanted one or owned one. I had a friend who got one of the early NYC Nintendo's before its big commercial release. All he had was Duck Hunt and Gyromite and later got SMB. Maybe a year later kids started catching on and most kids had one… and the following Christmas (SMB2 Christmas) is when I got mine. I was one of the kids that got his free copy of Dragon Warrior with a Nintendo Power subscription, a game I would have never picked myself… which turned me into an RPG fiend. 1990 (13yo) Sega Genesis - While I was one of the last kids to get an NES, I was one of the first to get a Genesis. My best friend was the first kid I knew that got a Genesis and it was like playing arcades at home. Every game we played on it was just a marvel to hear and look at compared to the best the NEShad to offer. We played through Altered Beast, Forgotten Worlds, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage countless times. To boost sales in the wake of the SNES release, Sega was selling the main deck that came with Altered Beast and a coupon for one other launch game. I picked Ghouls n Ghosts because it was the one game by best friend didn’t have at that point. I paid for the console with a combination of Christmas, Birthday cash presents and a springs worth of lawn mowings. My earliest game pickups was the Master System Converter (My buddy let me borrow all is SMS games), Phantasy Star 2 and Sword of Vermillion. Genesis would be the horse I backed in the “console wars” till the end where I conceded defeat right before the 32bit era began. 1990 (13yo) Power Base Converter - Not really a full console, but I did have one and while I never owned a Sega Master System at the time, I had access to about 20 games from a friend that gave up on the system after his broke and his mom wasn’t going to replace it. I had the Alex Kid games, Double Dragon, R-Type and Phantasy Star which would further my love for RPGs. 1992 (15yo) SNES - I actually bought this system selling my comic books. I was a big X-Men fan and I had all the first appearances of Deadpool and Cable and they were worth some serious money back then. My main push to buy the SNES was to play Street Fighter II. The amount of quarters I had dumped into SF2 at the time probably coulda paid for half of a SNES. Anyway I couldn’t afford SF2 so I rented it every weekend till I got a used copy. SNES was a console I didn’t own many games for and mainly rented games. I rented games like ActRaiser, Secret of Mana and Sim City. The 16bit adaptions from the NES were all bangers. Super Metroid, Link to the Past and Super Mario World. Late in the systems life I started buying all the RPGs. Final Fantasy, Lufia, Breath of the Wild, Chrono Trigger. The system would be the RPG beast for years to come till it was dethroned in the 32bit era by Sony. 1993 (14yo) TG16 - Yes, I owned a Turbo Grafx 16 for about 3 days. At this point the TG16 was so out of the Console Wars they were practically giving them away. I bought the main system along with Legendary Axe. It was a cool system but it felt 1 player… I had no other friends that had one to trade games with, stores barely had a selection of games for sale and no place rented TG16 games. I returned it 3 days later. 1995 (18yo) PlayStation - I just turned 18, had a part time job at a pharmacy and I was ready for a Credit Card. What does a Video Game addict do with his first Credit Card with a $1000 limit? Well, buy consoles he can’t afford! Naturally! First CC purchase in my lifetime was a PlayStation, a second controller and Battle Arena Toshinden. It was wild to play a 3D fighting game at home. It was surreal. Everyone I went to college had a PS1. It was easy to play new games because the rental stores adopted renting them early. I had a friend I met at work who was going to college to be an electrical engineer and he had ordered these chips from China and modded our PS1s to play copies. The world was our oyster. I had access to every RPG and there were TONS of them. There just wasn’t enough time in the day to play them all. So many amazing franchises were born or reborn on the PS1. 1996 (19yo) Sega Saturn - I finally got a Sega Saturn when they started to struggle in the US market. The price dipped to I think $200 and I got one. I only owned a handful of US titles and switched to imports once they started to become available… gaining me access to near perfect arcade conversions of popular Capcom arcade games of the time. Among the US games I owned… I had Guardian Heroes, Dragon Force and Panzer Dragoon Saga. Loved the system but the PS1 had occupied all my attention due to the access to games I had. 1996 (19yo) N64 - I could talk for hours of my level of disappointment for this system, but I’ll keep it short. The N64 was late… shamefully late… and it took too long to release the system seller games. I won’t discount how good their “banger” titles were… Ocarina of Time is one of the best games ever made. The PS1 was just so dominant, more affordable and for me… accessible due to my Chipped PS1. The N64 CastleVania games were duds, no RPGs to write home about and as far as fighting games go… I only loved KI2 Gold (but really wanted KI1 which everyone expected to be a launch title due to the arcade game being a commercial for the N64)… not a single Fighting game on the N64 played better than the other 2 consoles. I barely played the N64 outside of Mario64, OoT and Mario Kart 64. It was a waste of money to me and I was a true believer that this late to market contender woulda wiped the floor with Sony and Sega. Although the console was successful, and I didn’t “hate” it, it’s one of the biggest disappoints for me personally.

1999 (22yo) Dreamcast - At this stage of my life I was making decent money and it was a no brainer to preorder what I hoped to be Sega’s comeback system. This systems graphics were unreal at the time. It almost felt impossible on a standard definition TV screen and to see one hooked up to a VGA monitor was like playing the Arcade at home. I preordered it with 2 Arcade sticks, a second controller, two VMUs and two light guns. I got Soul Calibur and House of the Dead 2 and I was in heaven. Dreamcast was like a PS1 on crack but with less awesome gamepads… but that’s what arcade sticks are for. I enjoyed the CPS3 releases, Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Record of Lodoss War. I also got in on the copies games so I got to enjoy a lot on a show string budget. Great console, but sadly short lived due to be drowned out by Sonys powerhouse. 2001 (24yo) PS2 - This console was such a dominant force that it wasn’t long before the Dreamcast or any other console for that matter was forgotten. People bought this system just to have a cheap DVD player that came with a free state of the art video game system. I got this one shortly after launch, and while I enjoyed Final Fantasy X… in retrospect, I played mostly PS1 games and DVD movies on it. Great system, I appreciated the backward compatibility, but better graphics didn’t mean better games and I was at this point growing tired of 3D games I just wished were still 2D games. I did really enjoy the Baldurs Gate Games and the two EverQuest Diablo clones. Very memorable games. I’m going to stop here because I don’t have much good to say about every subsequent console and I fell out of console gaming all together in the PS3 generation. So which console is the best IMHO? It’s tough. It’s between the PS1 and the NES. NES was a cultural phenomenon. It was so amazing to be a kid during its prime. It occupied our every thought. We were obsessed… and it brought us all together. I cherish the NES library… there are easily 250 games I love enough to either own or want to own. I have so much nostalgia for this console and because of how it saved the video game industry and was the birthplace of some of the most amazing IPs… it’s tied for first. The other console is the PS1. It was the RPG fanatics dream. Not only did it have so many great new RPGs, it had remakes of many of my favorite SNES RPGs. It was so fun spending weekends renting games and making copies on my work buddies 2x speed CDR. It was ground zero for the Horror Survival genre, resurrected Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania and launched the Square / ENIX on such a trajectory that they would continue to be a household name for RPGs even to today. The system had such longevity, the most comfortable game pad in existence and was affordable from the start. Sony just knocked it out of the park. It was a new comer to the industry and just moped the floor with the two biggest titans in video game history. What a success story. My second favorite systems are also a tie… the war for 16 bit between Genesis and SNES. I cherish both of these systems and loved the adolescent banter between SNES and Genesis fanboys that absolutely loved both. Their competition just created better games. While the NES and the PS1 were my favorite consoles… the 16bit era was my favorite time to play video games. If you made it this far I thank you for giving my thoughts your time.

Wii U is still one of the best in my opinion. I actually have it in our living room and loaded up with all the games I would ever want to play. My daughter always always always asks to play Nintendo Land with me more than any other game. And I still say it's such a shame that Star Fox Zero is locked away only on Wii U...such a great looking Star Fox game with garbage control. Of all the games Nintendo intentionally had us rebuy like Zelda BOTW (for the heck of it) and Mario Kart 8, they decided to keep Star Fox exclusive to the Wii U. Classic Nintendo decision.

My experience with the Saturn was similar to your N64 experience. Seeing game supply dry up after the already somewhat disappointing Mega CD support, it broke me so hard I sold the system, never considered the Dreamcast that in my eyes killed the Saturn early (I still have negative attitude towards that system) and never played any 3d Sonic game either ever since, despite playing tons of Sega classics nowadays. I actually skipped an entire console generation getting back with the PS2 only, and playing Settlers, Civlilization casually on a family PC. Now I do have a warm nostaligia towards Saturn, but the Dreamcast - nah. :)

Super Mario Sunshine was/is awesome! I loved the Game Cube and IM pretty sure it remains the system our family has the most games for. And a lot of those games look absolutely amazing upscaled because the graphics of the game were better than the hardware.

Great top console list. I have 6 systems that are my favorite. Not sure of the order. These system are all great to me. NES, Super NES, Switch, PS2/PS1, Genesis, and Dreamcast. I wish you could buy NES, SNES and other classic games on the Switch like the Wii. That would probably make the Switch #1.

I started with Atari 2600 and then went the Sega route through the Master System and Megadrive before branching out into Nintendo with the SNES amd then N64 and I've owned basically everything since. I'm not as big of an RPG guy, there are some I adore such as Grandia and FFVIII but unlike yourself I loved both the N64 and Gamecube. Between them they have a lot of my favourite games like Mario 64, Goldeneye, and Ocarina, then Star Wars Rogue Leader, Super Monkey Ball, Wind Waker and Luigi's Mansion. In no particular order, my favourite consoles would be Megadrive, SNES, Saturn, N64, Gamecube and now Switch

PS3 Sharp Twin Famicom JVC X’Eye PC Engine duo Saturn PS3 is the greatest of all time because of its sprawling library of games, it’s living room utility of features with streaming, dvd/bd movie play back and web browsing. I loved the Drakes and so many other games. It really is the best, to this day. No console ever went as far with compatibility than PS3.

We need more info about your N64 release alien night! Also I find it funny, the N64 and Gamecube are by far my favorite consoles but I was born in 1992 and my mom ran a daycare until 2004 so I vividly remember how much fun local multiplayer with 8-12+ kids at a time was. I have 0 interest in JRPG games so that never bugged me, but what does bug me is how little personality modern consoles have. 6th gen (Dreamcast, PS2, OG XBOX and Gamecube) all feel so unique even though many of the games are the same. Modern XBOX looks like a damn web browser without adblock, Switch feels about as "corporate safe" as an OS can, and the PS5 is totally decent... but still very lackluster. Give me the vibes of the 6th gen or the ability to modify the UI/boot screen without modding the consoles...

It's crazy for me cause as a kid I favored the SNES over the Genesis. Now I find myself playing much more Genesis via emulation. I can't stomach the way SNES looks and sounds now for some reason. Same with PS2 vs Xbox. I favored Xbox for the better graphics back in the 2000s. Nowadays, the slim PS2 (with PS1 BC) is probably my favorite console. Whats wrong with me?

You may have simply broadened your knowledge base. I fail to see the wrong in being in an all-around, objectively better position. I can jump from a PS4 game right into an Atari 8-bit game to a Mega Drive hack to a NES demake (not to be confused with "remake") . It helps keep things proper, enabling us to see amazing feats from different perspectives. It's not that hard provided you see Gaming and its rich (and, often obscure) history for what it is - detached from any brands.

Just consoles would be: 1. Sony PlayStation 4 2. Sony PlayStation 2 3. Sega Saturn 4. Sega Dreamcast 5. Sega Genesis Now I'm just going by what the console can do, no modding/emulating older systems. The PS2 can play almost all PS1 games and most do benefit from faster loading on the system. The PS4 is my number 1 because it has gotten most of the games from PS3, but not all. I would still like an inFamous/Resistance/Killzone collection. Besides the PS1, the Genesis/Saturn/Dreamcast was my childhood. I LOVE Zelda and Metroid, but Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, Parasite Eve, Resident Evil, Street Fighter Alpha, ETC! have a much larger place in my gaming heart.

Can't go wrong with choosing the NES, SNES or PS1 as one's favorite system. However, since you say "of all time", should we consider all the new games some systems are now getting? I was a big Squaresoft fan during the SNES days and was never really into Sega, but I have to admit the Genesis is getting some exciting new games (Earthion, ZPF etc).

Your story of disappointment with N64 reminded me of when I EARNED enough money to spoil myself and got the genesis. I even had enough to buy the Sega CD. I bought sewer shark 😂. Two weeks later, they discontinued the Sega cd. I was FURIOUS! I boycotted consoles for years after that, I felt so betrayed I held out for years and got into computer gaming because I felt I could upgrade stuff on my own. That lead me to Half Life and online with Team Fortress! That lead me to online games for a while and eventually got into the OG Xbox.

Deserted Island consoles: 1) Switch. The library is bonkers and pretty much endless at this point. 2) GameCube. Such a special part of my teenage years. 3) Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 may have “lost” that generation in terms of sales and had the RROD issue, but again, the library is bonkers good! 4) Super Nintendo. Assuming I don’t get Nintendo Switch Online on the island, the Super Nintendo is a must have! 5) It could be a toss-up between the Genesis, N64 or the Wii. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Now if we are doing handhelds and consoles: 1) Switch 2) 3DS 3) 360 4) GBA (gonna cheat and say Analogue Pocket here…) 5) GameCube

Another Great video MLP... If I had to pick my all time top 4 systems, the first would be the Original NES... And I'll admit that I'd be blinded by nostalgia but, also it had some great visuals and music, and now that I can play it in 1080p😮 Holy Hell... 💪🏿 Saturn would be my second, and the Xbox 360 is my 3rd... Super NES I have a lot of love for but, it's out of the top three...
