When was the last time you bawled your eyes out to music? For me, I definitely wouldn't have expected it to be at the hands of a Deathcore Ballad. Not only have the entirety of Lorna Shore created one of the most emotional trilogies I've ever heard, but Will Ramos's vocals are absolutely stunning, along with some insane production. Elizabeth! As the band's producer, thank you for the wonderful in-depth analysis of the vocals and music. These guys really put everything they had into this record, and especially these 3 songs. Production, mixing, and mastering to me isn't purely a utilitarian process, but a creative one too. It should always serve the song, emotions, and the people expressing themselves, and not distract from it. It's easy to get carried away, because sometimes, getting carried away is exactly what the part needs. Let me share a little bit of my process for the Pain trilogy: Part I: for the intro, I took Adam's scratch keyboard writing session lead and built an intro around it. The obvious thing to do would be to build a bombastic orchestration, but I just loved how sad and small it sounded on that keyboard. It just perfectly captured what he was going through at the time. Not a big, triumphant moment, but a sad, lonely one in studio B, with a giant "LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE" sign on the door, trying to write his way out of severe depression. It was this exact keyboard performance that sold me on using this melody and building the trilogy around it. Part II: the intro from part I is then developed into the chorus here, and it being the theme of the trilogy, it was a no-brainer to have Will scream along with it, step for step, to really reinforce it as the main theme. The key change on the last chorus comes from their hometown hero - Bon Jovi. I just love it when bands take influence from atypical places. That mixture and cross-pollination is what's beautiful about new music. Part III: with the transition from part II to part III, I wanted to bring the piece down to a dark place, then build it back up into this epic, malicious, foreboding climax, where as you so eloquently put it, "deathcore becomes the ascension of that emotional tension". The intro needs to set the scene for the final chapter, so my idea for the string arrangement was to have this cyclical, ascending and descending motion to it, which reflects all the highs and lows you've experienced, but also foreshadows an ominous conclusion. By the time you hit the big band outro of this song, you either realize this big moment is from the intro of part I and the chorus of part II... or you don't, but either way, you can feel the familiarity of the melody reach its peak form after the dramatic pause to cause the listener to lean in and anticipate this moment. Will uses all 3 chorus lines here, to create a new one, and to tie the entire trilogy together. A great example of his brilliant writing style and attention to detail. Outro: I wanted to close out the trilogy, by bringing back Adam's original synth sound from the intro to drive home that you've returned to where you began, but now with delicate quartet strings and a soft choir setting up that return, to make it feel like you've crossed over through this journey. I really love how this is the only time you hear the melody truly resolve, which fades into the fire sounds. I love how you can appreciate all the beauty here, but also the filthy breakdowns, haha. It's really that extreme dichotomy that makes the band truly great. But yeah, I'm just super happy that you and your channel exists and points out all of the time and effort we, and other artists and producers and mixing engineers, all put into these productions. Music appreciation makes the world a better place, and you're at the forefront of this on youtube. It's incredibly validating as a producer to hear you passionately dissecting the music, performances, and production. I absolutely love the lack of edits and cuts, by the way. Keep doing exactly what you do

Josh, great work. I'm not typically into deathcore but LS is just something else, and the production is an underrated part of that. Lost my little brother to suicide on Christmas day in 1996 its just as painfull today as it was in 96. In 2007 my daughter attempted to take her own life, I spent a week sleeping on the floor next to her bed in the hospital. Without even reading the lyrics you can hear the emotion, then I listened along with the lyrics and it gutted me. I feel these songs in my bones. 53 years old and crying like a baby while I listen to these 3 tracks. Please thank Will and Lorna Shore for an amazingly tragic and beautiful trilogy. Going to go call my daughter and grandkids now.

The first one hit me and my girlfriend very hard when it came out, especially that bridge with 'Take what is left of my Life before you go'. Now my girlfriend (24) passed away nine days ago due to a Lung Embolism, and this Song hits harder than ever... I can hardly listen to the intro without crying like a baby. We actually listened to the entire Album when she drove our car for the last time in her entire Life, on friday when it finally dropped. Still didn't listen to it since then, means I never listened to it entirely cause I know that it will fuck me up completely... Rest in Peace my Love...

@@thisismyrealname2860 I can very easily hear the lyrics without looking them up. Been listening to harsh vocals for over 20 years. It’s like learning an accent. That being said, some lyrics in metal songs aren’t meant to be clear. They’re used as a texture. Bands will replace whole words with just a pig squeal. No attempt of even saying the word. But will tends to articulate well.

I agree.... If I could get a version without the vocals I think I'd love it. The odd thing is, I'm not opposed to when a vocalist screams to emphasize something especially in the apex of a song.... but I'd like to actually be able to understand the words without looking them up before hand - Would also like literally any clean vocals mixed in. Disturbed and Killswitch I think have good juxtapositions of harsh and clean vocals, but when a band just leans so hard into the harsh vocals they lose any emotional emphasis (to me) because it's not compared to anything else. Is this impressive - yes. Is the musical part gorgeous - absolutely Would I prefer a version with clean (or no) vocals - 100% - I could only make out about 15 words so it might as well have been in a different language to me.

@@amcc8188 to me, the harsh vocals truly symbolize the emotions conveyed better than clean vocals could. i think clean vocals could just as well convey the sadness and mourning... But The harsh vocal really bring the anger, the desperation and the helplessness. The inability to collect yourself to the front. Harsh vocals... And espescially will's really convey those feelings to me in this trilogy But then again... I am absolutely NOT a vocal expert. I could not sing a toneladder to save a life. I'm not a big fan of the deathcore genre in general, but i've grown into a huge lorna shore fan, partly because of those absolutely stunning vocals. Anyway... tastes can differ and your opinion on it yours, and equally valid. I just wanted to drop my 2 cents :)

Will was the missing piece to Lorna Shore’s puzzle and now they’re all elevating each other and putting out their best work to date. In a genre where far too many bands blend together and sound very by the numbers I think that Lorna Shore are truly carving out their own spot at the top. That’s subjective, because I personally love the Tom days the best and CJ is know slouch either… Will is the missing piece for them to go mainstream. Mainstream will dumb down your music and change your whole sound. Hopefully that doesn’t happen to Lorna Shore. My one critique is for them to stop using the same pattern structure with every “Will” song…

When Will screams "where do you go when i close my eyes" it just breaks my heart in a billion pieces, everytime i listen it. Pain remains is something really unique, its construction, the emotion, it is really powerful and reminds me classical requiem. In fact it is a requiem.

So it turns out, the quickest way to cry over these songs even more, was in fact watch a hour and a half long analysis of them that allows you to hear all of the pain and psyche-breaking melodies + lyrics 5 times each... God, what an awesome set of songs.

Sorry for your loss man. I'm 31 at the time of writing this. I've just recently lost my grandma and watched my dad deal with the grief of losing a mother. I am yet to go through the inevitable and I just don't know how I will ever be able to deal with that. I am rather the same, it takes a lot to get me going, but these 3 songs captured the emotion and helped bring it forward. Brilliant work by the band and everyone involved. Best of luck to you pal

Music (and crying to it) literally saved me in 2016 when my wife passed. The first two parts of Pain Remains are terrifyingly relatable to me as I have been through it all (minus the actual suicide in part 2). I was wrecked and taken back to those dark times after each of the first two parts. Wondering and at the same time fearing where the journey will go in part 3. Bracing for impact.

I've always heard heavy genres as pretty much just noise, and kind of still do (even though I know a lot more is behind it)... but then I heard Lorna Shore's stuff and I was instantly a huge fan of the genre. Hopefully I can find other bands in the genre that have a similar impact on me. I just don't know if they have the same abilities and qualities... which includes the whole band and the amazing production. Like these 3 songs with the music videos for example, is probably the best way to introduce someone to deathcore (wasn't my introduction to the band, but still). Music videos can really help to properly connect with the sounds, even if one doesn't know what is being said, the emotions are very clear. Also the video where they put a camera down his throat would be a really good initial introduction before hearing the trilogy, to gain some more of that curiosity and appreciation for the talent and skills.

@@Siberius- Shadow of Intent has some great storytelling as well as some beautiful musicianship. Ben Duerr is getting better with his pronunciation. Check out their latest album Elegy. My personal favorites are “From Ruin…We Rise” and “Blood In The Sands Of Time” Although you really can’t go wrong with their discography.

@@youngtundra478 - Awesome, I'll check those out. I think the production is the biggest part for sure. Lorna Shore's whole band and production is really good, and they really know how to emphasise and showcase Will's amazing vocals in the best light, and then are able to fit it to really emotional story telling, which is crazy (not that I need the story telling, but it's cool). If you put Will in an average to good band with production that is average to good, then I would have likely not given a shit about listening to more of his voice, which would have sucked, but it is what it is. Or even if he was in an amazing band with amazing production, that doesn't mean they are going to be something that I enjoy listening to. I think a big part is how well they can work WITH Will's voice to elevate it, and also their ability to replicate and communicate human emotion so well. Also how they have a lot of interesting stuff going on, including with just the vocals, they're not afraid to have pauses and slow it down and use contrast to their benefit. A lot of bands will just blast a lot of sounds at the same time non-stop, and that's very fatiguing and boring for me. Like the more chaotic the better, but unrelentingly so. I think a lot of those bands have missed how deathcore can be beautiful and very emotional, and Lorna Shore certainly understands and demonstrated that. What other genre can really communicate maximum anger, genuine rage, suffering, to the extent that deathcore ideally can. There's so much more here than just the typical headbanging stuff (not that there shouldn't also be that, but it doesn't usually seem to be done very well in my view). I typed way too much! Can organising my thoughts. Maybe my view will change a bit as I listen to more stuff.

You know when a video helps magnify the story. Right after the analysis at 22:19 Elizabeth is smiling, enjoying the song and vocals just as they cut to the Hospital room scene. At 22:20 she shuts her eyes and her mouth shuts as she puts together this romantic video is turning tragic and at 22:21, just 2 seconds from smiling, enjoying it joyfully, the GRAVITY of the story has her fighting back tears already. GREAT Cinematography personified right there!

I've went through a lot, and didn't realize how numb I was getting inside by bottling things up and pushing thru for years. That approach isn't sustainable, but once you go numb you just kind of coast in auto pilot and slowly start to want to leave rather than feel this dead inside anymore. I wasn't extremely far along on that journey, but still further than reasonable, and I wasn't in a good place in spirit. This beautiful song about loss and suicide is well done and very moving, as is your thoughtful analysis. However, your genuine sharing that you've been in a dark place, and most importantly your several direct pleas to the viewer to get help if they are somewhere that's losing hope, really touched a part of my soul that got bottled up along the way with my pain and suffering. When I saw an internet stranger that's a RU-vidr visibly freeze and feel trapped several times at a portrayal of suicide done by another stranger that's an actor, it really, really got to me. I realized how much my loved ones would truly miss me, and how big of a waste that loss would be to even the least of my acquaintances. I ugly cried for the last half of your video, all while continuing to watch and really leaned into letting it all out and feeling again. I'm not saying you saved a life today, because that might be a bit over-the-top and missing the mark. What I will say is that you were a BIG part of an experience that helped open me up BEFORE it got into those "almost too late / too late" stages for me. From the bottom of my slowly feeling heart...Thank you. :')

I know how what you mean, man. Growing up, I had some family problems that really destroyed me mentally in an age where I didn't know how to process all of these new, negative feelings. So the coping mechanism I learned at the time was to shut these emotions down and escape from reality. And in a way, it worked, I wasn't feeling the pain anymore, but that also made me unable to really emphasize with other people, which made it really hard to interact with other people and build meaningful connections, all of it in puberty as well where things where so chaotic. During those days I had a feel friends, but still aways felt kinda left out, since I felt we didn't connect as deeply as they did to each other. It was only much later in life that I looked back and noticed that the problem at the time was with no one but myself and my inability to express myself in order to create a real connection. Anyways, a feel years after that I was finally able to meet some other friends who were able to make me see these flaws and try and deal with these issues that I kept buried within, so now I can proudly say I'm becoming half a functioning human beign. So as a person, I can honestly say that I'm very happy for the self discovery you made with this video, and I also hope you were able to get more in touch with your feelings, nothing makes me happier nowadays than shedding a few tears after experiencing a work of art such as this trilogy

I used to be a pianist before stuff happened. Later, for a couple of years, fronted for a garage rock band. Then I kind of buried my inner musician. When I found Lorna Shore's trilogy, it kicked in heavily and made me wonder - like a strong itch on my mind - how would it sound with my non-deathcore skillset? And also made me feel a weird mix of regret, anger and satisfaction. Yesterday, I tried to pick up the different rhythms and melodies and approximate them on piano. I was only half successful, but I immensely enjoyed the process. I'll continue. It's already turning out to be the best thing I could do against any kind of trauma. I already promised elsewhere, that if I make it work, I'll post the cover online. Now, I can safely say it's not an "if" but a "when". Huge thanks to Lorna Shore and everyone involved in the making of Pain Remains. I needed something brutal but complex and you guys delivered in all the wall-of-sound glory! Elizabeth, I love your openness. Thank you for the massive analysis. Seeing you geek out about vocal techniques always cheers me up, I'm not as experienced but I'm a bit of a vocal geek, too :)

The thought of losing him became so very real that I felt very lost and horrified to face my life without him. He is out of hospital at the moment, but there's so much that is still lingering. I lost my father when I was around 12-14 years old. He comitted suicide by poisoning himself with Co2. The last time I saw him we were on the couch watching tv. I was cuddling with him and didn't know this would be the last time I would ever see, feel, hear him. I went to bed and woke up the next day with him already gone. I didn't think anything of it as he always left very early for work and just went on with my day. When it was around 5 pm and was waiting for him to come home. I always jumped into his arms when he came home. He and I had a very stron father-son relationship and it meant everything to me. But he didn't come. I thought maybe he was out drinking something with a few friends. The next day I woke up and he was still gone. I was starting to worry. Mom tried to reach out to him but no calls were picked up. It started to dawn on us that something terrible had happened. We contacted the police. On the third day the anguish was unbearable. I was panicking because I just didn't know what was going on. When the phone rang I was sitting at the pc playing games, trying to distract myself. The crying from my sister was enough to know what happened. I got to the living room already pale. And when mom told me he was gone my whole world shattered. It was like someone punched me out of reality into a deep void where everything around me was just a meaningless version of everything I hold dear. I broke out in tears. I cried. I screamed. I didn't want to accept it. My insides felt as if they were pulled inwards, consumed by a hole that my father left behind, sucking everything inside. This feeling of being both squished together and ripped apart at the same time by your own body is the worst thing I ever felt. The kick in the guts is something I can still feel today. And Lorna Shore managed to make me feel all of that again just with notes and voices. This level of musical mastery is something that I don't know if I want to experience again. The songs will forever hold a great place in my heart for how they make me remember my father though. The time after I learned of his death was probably even worse. I only felt empty inside. Nothing meant anything anymore. I didn't know how to continue, how to live on. I was ready to give up. It got so bad at one point that when no one was home I went the kitchen, took a knife and held it before my stomach. I was so close to just move my arms back and end it all. But I couldn't. I couldn't make my family go through the horror of losing a loved one through suicide again. I put the knife back and I ran out of the kitchen, horrorfied at what I almost did. It feels good being able to write this out. It gives me a feeling of closure...

Wow....within mere lines of your story i was weeping. My biggest fear in life is to unexpectedly be gone from my children's lives. Sometimes I think about things from their perspective if that were to happen and it rips me apart. I cannot imagine the pain you and your family endured. I am so sorry. It still happens sometimes when I'm home that the phone rings and when I don't recognize the number I'm hesitent to pick up because I fear that someone else has died. It's like a fucking trauma. At least this doesn't always happen and has happened less and less over the years

I've also attempted suicide over similar circumstances to this song. I had undiagnosed PTSD from that night, and the circumstances around it, that has been haunting me for 8 long years. I just thought I was going crazy, was too sensitive and touchy or maybe just a bitch. This trilogy somehow triggered me to get help. They glide so well together while being very different. The first one ending on. " Am I just a ghost just like you, caught between the Seams of two intertwining melodies? " Leading into the second song, where hope is gone, and he might be alive, but living like a ghost, the second song is the time between melodies. So the ending of the first song leads to the expressions of the second. And then to the 3 where it about getting past the empty space between melodies. Where he is no longer a ghost just acting, but the emotions he is feeling is acting through him. Pain, anger, everything. The attempt in the second part was the uncontrolled action, the lack of everything. While the choice in the 3 was made with and understanding what he felt his life had become. Ending the trilogy with the words " Dancing like flames, after all that I've done I'll salt the earth and disappear in a sea of fire " Dancing like Flames being part 1 All that I've done being part 2 In a Sea of fire being part 3 And the 3 also bind the first part into it again, after the half part of the song, with the sort of breakdown, the melody and flow goes through some of the same waves we heard in the first song- ending with the bells and string actually playing through the same notes, but it start before that leading up to it. So both the story and the music is brought back together at the end. Same way life starts and end the same place, in all forms. no matter the start or the end. You never know where you start. And when you are at the end, it does not really matter. It was the choices and feelings between the melodies you experiences along the way that guided you to what ever end you had. The two things in life that does not matter to you, is the start, and the ending. because you are not there to deal with them or experience them. Yet it is those two things that mean the most when all is said and done. Because what ever you did with your life, those you loved, and those you hurt is all because your life started. And your actions in between the melodies is what you will be remembered for.

Pain remains 1,2, and 3 were my top 3 songs of my Spotify wrapped. It’s such a beautiful song(s). It’s a shame more people don’t show more appreciation for Lorna shore. Will Ramos is an amazing writer and vocalist.

I can't help but be touched by your raw emotional reaction to this. I suffer from a mood disorder and am thankfully medicated and stable, but I've struggled with s*icidal ideation and depression at several points in my life. I've seen the darkest of the dark and came out the other side. I see it in your eyes, I can tell where you've been and why this hits you so hard. Yes, it is possible to cry to a deathcore song (epic masterpiece). Any sort of art that carries meaning can spark our emotions, especially if the sentiment speaks to us. Your relationship with "extreme" music and harsh vocals opened a door for you to experience this range of emotion. I don't know you personally, but I am proud of you. And to everyone else who's struggled with s*icidal ideation and came out the other side: I see you, and I'm proud of you.

I haven't seen or spoken to my one brother for about 12 or 13 yrs. Mental health is still highly looked down upon in our society. I have never learned his official disorder, but when he would medicate for it, he was a very intelligent smart person. Meth & other stuff may have diluted his ability to stay on meds that normalized him. I'm not saying everyone needs to normalize, but when you cannot see the benefits of a loving family via a normalizing drug to allow that, it's very sad for all. I'm by no way saying prescription drugs can solve everything, but I can say not everyone is the same & it sucks losing a brother via mental illness for the last 14 years or so. My Mom has spoken to him sporadically, but it is always very depressing for her, so I never bring it up. Mental illness is real & affects everyone in a family.

ive been listening to deathcore for about 17 years now and i don't think i've ever cried to a deathcore or even metalcore song of any kind, not until this triology by Lorna Shore. they really are a gem. thanks for this analysis it was a pleasure as always.

Not to take away any of their credits here, but talking about characters, take a look on the work of Defeater, all their albums evolves around one main story of a family, it is almost a audio book, it's incredible as well. I watched part 1 a month ago and to my surprise, I was also holding back tears. Then the guitar solo came in and I couldn't hold back the years anymore. I'm 43 years old and not ashamed to admit Lorna Shore made me cry. A testament to their musical abilities.

Honestly I felt the emotions throughout Pt. 1, 2 and 3 when listening, but watching you cry at the parts that almost got me made me cry. I think that Deathcore has always had the potential to have this sort of ballad structure where they essentially analyse what it's like to grieve, and never quite reaching acceptance. For me this song is the 5 stages of grief except you never reach 5, you're stuck at 3 or 4 (anger or depression). Just the feeling where the something tragic has happened and the world has left you behind and continued on but you can't accept it yet. This is truly an absolute masterpiece and I can't stop listening to it. I'm very lucky to have never experienced what the video talks about, but we all have that pain that can sometimes stick and can empathise with this.

That’s how I felt aswellwith this. The different elements they show in both music production and physical makes this an absolute perfect representation of real human emotion. I’m blown away by their ability to tell a story with music. I only found Lorna Shore because of Elizabeth. Never listen to deathcore either and somehow…I fell in love with Lorna Shore. I saw an interview with Will Ramos and about what to expect with Pain Remains and he said “I just want to tell a story. I didn’t read a lot of books growing up and still don’t but I love to write stories.” Well it’s quite obvious he wrote a story. Absolutely beautiful band and music ❤️

Just watched them live for the first time recently, and when lorna shore came on stage the whole audience was glued to the stage. Almost like everyone held their breath in disbelief of what they were seeing! It was a new lifetime every second!

The “I love you” part breaks me every single time. As well as “a world without you.” My wife is everything to me. I can’t imagine spending a single second without her. Not only do I feel like this song is definitely about loss, but I feel like it can be about the fear of loss too. I’ve never had extreme metal break me like this before.

Don’t know if anyone mentioned this already, but I love how Part I started with rain sounds then Part III ended with fire sounds. Such a impactful contrast in itself, and of course the lyrics and music throughout the trilogy, it just is packed to the brim with emotion.

Until Lorna Shore, I had never heard this kind of emotion in death metal (just constantly crying lol). AND have never heard it since lol. Death metal is so suited to expressing pain and anger, yet I don't know if many bands are even capable of tapping into this. I'm going to do some exploring soon to really try and find other bands with such amazing production is a crucial element. As a very-non-metal-head, I was an instant fan. So much other death metal is just boringggg, I need them to do something more with it.

It's so absolutely insane to me that while this trilogy has the ability to make me cry all by itself, I can still watch analysis and review videos on it and they'll still make me cry as if I've never seen or heard them in my life. As someone who's former depression exhibited itself in the form of anger, the third song hits hard. It reminds me of who I used to be and the mental state I once was in. Catharsis is definitely part of it. The third song captured the visceral fury of my depression so well I couldn't help but weep. Partially from joy of having lived through it and come out a better person, but also out of fear for remembering it, and the relief that worse things didn't come from it.

It’s amazing how Will was able to covey grief in his lyrics and vocals. The disbelief, the anger, wanting to die because you feel that you can’t live without the person you lost, and feel numb on the inside. When my wife passed away this is exactly how I felt. I love these songs but I’m reduced to a teary eyed sobbing mess every time I listen to them.

I listened to part 3 on my lunch break yesterday and idc who saw me in my car ugly crying. This goes beyond music. This is an exposé of the most difficult of human emotions to navigate. I have been grieving someone I lost, though not in death, and the rage that I now feel, after agony and that cold nothingness...this is it. They just put it all out there, in the most incredible way. Will said he loves to tell stories; he is indeed a master storyteller. I love watching your analysis. Your respect and reverence is beautiful.

My parents had a great marriage and were truly in love for 37 years. My mom died suddenly of cancer in 2016 and my dad never recovered. His mental health was the first thing to suffer terribly. I remember walking down the road from his house late one night a couple years after she died and hearing him screaming to himself 😢 A year after that he had a heart attack and had to have surgery, then last year right before Christmas he had a stroke (and subsequent injuries) which has caused vascular dementia... “A world without you wasn’t meant for me”… this song just hit me hard.

What's so cool about these songs is that you can feel the emotions of the band. From the drums, to the guitar, to Will's singing, you feel what they are feeling. I watched an interview with the lead guitarist where he talks about mental health and stuff that was going on in his life while writing this and it translates through his playing. Also, it's been talked about how the end of the first song is meant to portray the suddenness and absoluteness of death. (Of course it is also utilitarian because it leads into the next song on the album, but it is SO abrupt on purpose.)
