New here, but have you ever thought of using a standard oil furnice nozzel? You basically made one. There are heaps of different types to experiment with. Like spray angle and field distribution as well as nozzel size and flow characteristics.
@Neally
@Neally 4 месяца назад
I think that's actually where I got the idea for the nozzle, I saw a diagram or something in passing. The issue for me was the size of those nozzles, they seem quite large and have a very high flow rate, much too high for what we're working with at the moment. Maybe in a larger engine, or an afterburner, I'll look more into furnace nozzles! Thank you!

When you need more compression, put some axial compressors before the centrifugal compressor. The diameter of the first axial compressor stage needs to be greater than the intake of your centrifugal compressor.

To actually Increase the thrust by quiet a margin. you would require a Compressor wheel setup outside the combustion chamber (compressors and stators both).
@notsam498
@notsam498 4 месяца назад
In a radial compressor the volute geometry serves the role of the stator blades in an axial design. I am tempted to load up his models though just to have a look at the compression and collector area of the volute because now i am curious. this is a huge reason why he is using a radial compressor and why they are used so commonly. Radial turbines get really crazy like this because you have multiple stages of compression taking place on a single rotating part. this is why they may have three blade lengths with different geometry. as the air is forced farther into them. more blades and different angles are turning the flow laminar and compressing it.
@Neally
@Neally 4 месяца назад
Exactly! The diffuser section is a part of the upper volute and serves to expand the flow causing the speed to decrease and the pressure to increase. I think I'll talk about it a bit more in one of the upcoming videos. Cheers!

probably a flawed idea, but ultra sonic humidifiers make incredibly fine room temperature mist, im thinking that if you could add that disk actuating at very high frequency's to vaporize the fuel to the main intake in combination with your new nozzle, it could yield better results.
@Neally
@Neally 4 месяца назад
I like that idea! I don't think it would work for the main combustion chamber, but we could try something like that for an afterburner!
@ArneChristianRosenfeldt

Turbines make this high pitched sound already. So the idea is to put injectors as close to the rotor as possible? Like ITB carburettor?
@kraftwurx_Aviation
@kraftwurx_Aviation 4 месяца назад
Why are you doing this other than fun? A gas turbine extracts energy to turn the compressor. The power ti increase output is coupled directly to the turbine wheel. Your setup has a maximum compressibility limit based on the power of your brushless motor. You'll never reach the kinds of thrust a jet turbine can. In fact there's no point to even have a turbine wheel at all. What would be more interesting would be for you? To attach a turbine wheel to a electric generator and extract the electrical energy from the turbine wheel. And feed it back to the brushless motors driving the compressor. There's something on the order of 90% efficiency. Or better on electric motors. So you likely would be able to extract more power this way and accelerate the turbine even higher, but likely a 3d printed compressor wouldn't survive the kind of rpms we're talking about. Still, it would be interesting to see this. You'd have to gear reduce the turbine wheel to the generator to get to a rpm range it can work efficiently at and need a way to convert the power efficiently and smoothly back to the motor. Mayne capacitors?
@Neally
@Neally 4 месяца назад
I'm mainly doing it to learn, and to incrementally improve my engine systems. The Arduino, the compressor, how pressure works inside the engine.. All of that is stuff I started to figure out because of this project, and now I'm using that to build a proper turbojet

How do you know the thrust is coming from combustion in the engine and not just airflow from the turbo? id assume that given the turbo is moving alot of air surely it would make a fair bit of thrust on its own. Super cool project i look forward to seeing more of it!
@Neally
@Neally 4 месяца назад
Yeah so in the very first jet engine video I did I tested the engine with only the compressor running, and it made about 25 grams of thrust. Based on that I've been treating the compressor thrust as essentially negligible

I have a question Does the engine make more thrust after ignition? Because the compressor is electric, so shouldn't the overall pressure be equal to the pressure produced by the compressor? Thanks
@Neally
@Neally 4 месяца назад
The engine makes something like 5x-8x more thrust after ignition. Because the exhaust is somewhat restricted, the combustion adds to the internal pressure. Ideally the compressor would make significantly more pressure making it so that the pressure the combustion adds is insignificant, but I haven't gotten us there yet. Great question!
@mr.mirror1213

Wait , can you burn kerosene with your current compressor air flow, might not burn well, upgrade to brushless dawg, perhaps take a used car turbo and use the motor to power it
@Neally
@Neally 4 месяца назад
I'm really not sure, I've read that karosene needs more pressure for good combustion and idk if the engine produces enough. I'll probably use propane to get the engine up to speed and then swap to karosene mid burn, which may take care of that issue. Either way, I'm working on a turbo jet so the motor and pressure won't be an issue for much longer
