Great video..I didn’t play pc vr so quest was an awesome to experience. I get why people are jaded..I can’t go back to Nintendo or sega!! But if the hardware isn’t to there liking, then those people should just stick with their $5000 pc.

Very well spoken about the parallels between where VR is compared to what happened with Atari. It also happened again (not with gaming) with the Dotcom crash in the late ‘90s. It’s not rare for a new(ish) industry to have a bit of same gear shifting issues we had when learning to drive a clutch as teenagers. Those first couple of try’s nearly gave my dad whiplash. It’s sort the same thing we’re seeing now.

@NoDebut yes! I only have a Quest, but I love it. My first vr experience was some tank game that you stand up and put the thing over your head. Spin in a circle lol. That was late 90s or early 2000s.

I used to be a big pcvr fanboy. I had spent 2 years saving for the PC build I wanted, then bought the Valve Index for 1k. After such a big investment and seeing what the Quest 2 provided I never thought I'd be ok with standalone. Well years later, the Index falling behind visually and a lack of game development, I knew the writing was on the wall. After hearing the Quest 3 was nearly 2.5x the computing power of 2, had much a larger pixel density than index, and had pancake lens.. I pulled the trigger for standalone and so far I'm very happy I did. Q3 definitely feels like it bridges the gap between PCVR and standalone. My hope is with the next XR2 series and new optimization techniques, we'll see games on standalone looking similar to what we've experienced on hefty computer builds.

I had money for Index but quest 3 was coming out in 3 months. What put me off with index was how much they charge for the base stations, the fact they make noise and also break overtime…. Didnt risk it for the money they are still asking. I am so happy with quest 3 even though I struggled to find a permanent game. Everything changed once I got into simracing and now Contractors:Showdown (pavlov was fun but C:S is a proper game). What they achieved on a standalone really keeps me coming back daily and having so much fun. I stayed light on buyung addons. Only have silicon back head support piece for £10, controller straps for £9 and usb C cable for £19.99. Once I buy a battery headstrap (waiting on sales) Im done with addons.

I'm fairly new to VR, only bought a Quest 3 about three months ago. While Lone Echo is one of my favorite games ever now, for the most part I don't see 2016 or even 2020 producing wholesale better games. There is a subset of gamers who find that good graphics equal immersion, but I don't think that's true for most people. I still play games from the 80s that can be highly immersive.

I feel like the minority here. I am loving and enjoying VR in every way. I spent the last two years playing Zenith and loving it. Before that it was Population One and before that it was Rec Room. Right now I’m also hooked on Medieval Dynasty and having a blast. I also work out in VR on my elliptical using Holofit and also with FitXR. I think some of the problem is some people need a constant dopamine fix so they need constant shiny. I’m just enjoying what I have and I’m marveling and the fact that I can have all this fun in my own apartment without spending money!

That game is probably going to wind up being the biggest VR hit in 2024. There's just something about that game. The graphics are crisp and it seems very adventurous and will be coming out on all VR platforms. It also seems like a game for everybody including kids and adults. And by the way, "Wanderer: The Seas of Fortune" is also in development, and it looks like it's going to be a game about sea Pirates.

I’m 40 something years old and started in VR in 2019 with the first Quest. Have gotten the quest 2 and 3, really like them both. I have tried PCVR but the cordless standalone experience is my go-to. Not saying I can’t be pulled in to PCVR but I prefer fast-paced fun over perfect graphics and complexity. I hope VR keeps getting better but I don’t look for it to replace reality. I’m looking for more fun experiences and more ways to involve friends and family. The Quest reminds me a lot of the Atari and the C-64, where it was all about gameplay and having a good time, not about 10,000 buttons and people playing 24/7 in their mom’s basement…

I bought a quest 2 roughly 2 years ago and upgraded to the 3 around 3 months ago. I also bought a PC in that time chasing the high fidelity PCVR graphics. I am super glad I bought the pc as it allows me access to games not available to the quest platform like half life alyx, Skyrim vr and a bunch of other awesome titles. That being said, I’ve purchased games on the meta platform that have cross buy and still prefer to play the standalone version unless it’s a social experience like rec room or vrchat. Standalone just makes things easy and if my wife wants to be in the living room I can just go to another room and continue playing. There is a lot to be said about ease of use, plus games on the quest 3 like Asgards Wrath and dungeons of eternity have good enough graphics that the immersion is awesome! I have friends who refuse to go anywhere near Meta which I can appreciate, but as Matteo said they’re the only ones who are so invested in vr to the point they risk sinking their ship if it doesn’t succeed and as a result are really pushing the industry forward. I don’t think we would have had anywhere near as many awesome vr experiences available to us if it weren’t for them, that doesn’t mean I think they’re anywhere near a top notch company, but we wouldn’t have a Batman Arkham game on the horizon if it weren’t for them so 🤷

Totally agree with your outlook. And I too empathize with those who feel VR has taken a step back in overall experience when it comes to immersion, but like you I think standalone headsets are the future of the device for broad adoption. Still I think more powerful headsets are a small part of the adoption solution. I wonder how much more adoption will come via the game community - even with high powered headsets. Games/entertainment led many early adopters of PCs in the 70s, but PC adoption didn't really grow until the the establishment of productivity apps. So for broad adoption of VR we need to start to see a new type of productivity app take hold in VR. Like when word processors and spreadsheets stirred early adoption of PCs in small businesses and home use. Even though crappy dot matrix printers offered sub par output, the convenience, power and speed of these productivity apps made the investment worth it. More PCs in the market was good for games - even when they were originally purchased for productivity. Because, when we aren't using the PC for work - why not also use it for a game or two? I keep thinking what are those productivity apps for VR?

Immersion is a weird word. I feel just as immersed playing Dark Souls in 3rd-person VR as Pavlov where I'm first-person. And to that end, I think people are expecting the immersion just to happen because you're in VR, rather than game developers making something in which you become immersed

I went through all the stages: I started with a Quest 2 not caring about PCVR games at all, to playing PCVR games in a mid-tier PC and enjoying it but almost the same as standalone games, to now having a PC with a 4090 rtx and wanting more PCVR games and even sad that some games were standalone-only. I'm not jaded, I'm just disappointed in the direction that the market is going. The majority of the development is being done for standalone VR and people won't be able to experience the joy of PCVR graphics. I think the UEVR will be the savior of PCVR.

I've always wanted VR since Nintendos over exposure of Red in my brain. For VR to make progress, we need to make mistakes, need failures, and we need diversity. I am happy with what I bought. Do I use it everyday? No. I don't have the time to. When I get my time (I am a dad of 2 boys), I love every second of it. I can get away from reality and just relax. I don't get that from flat-screen anymore. It's so hard to play console when I have standalone and play it all on my quest 3. I love VR, and I am fully supporting it, good or bad. Thank you, Matteo311. I am 36, and your videos hit home with me. Keep up the good work.

On the main topic of the video, I'm hoping that we can reach that happy nexus where hardware capabilities and the size of the user base at least let us come "full circle" so to speak, and then surpass/move on from where we were. PC gpu's will most likely always be a step ahead of chipsets intended for mobile use, but will that always matter? The Atari analogy is good, but think about this one: There was a time when arcades were thriving. When some of the most coveted titles on home consoles (Atari, NES, SNES, Genesis/Megadrive esp.) were conversions of popular arcade games. The conventional wisdom at the time was "The arcade version will Always be better". That the hardware we have available at home would never be the equal of, or be able to play a truly faithful version of the games we were enjoying in the arcades. Fast forward a few years and where are we now? While there are a lot of different reasons why the arcades waned in popularity, if you search back, there was a lot of talk about how modern home consoles killed arcades. The technological development of gaming hardware for the home started to outpace what was being used in arcades. The graphics and gameplay experiences available at home became just as good or better. Maybe some of the social experience of the arcade was lost, but the couch co-op/multiplayer experience made up for it a lot (somewhat similar to a theatrical film experience vs. watching a movie in a nicely equipped setting at home). As an 80's "kid" I still like the arcade experience and what I feel it still offers. But could we imagine playing Skyrim or Fallout in an arcade? The depth of games and stories we're now able to experience at home has outpaced what people back in the day ever though possible. MMO's, muliplayer online FPS's, you name it. We're spoiled for choice. While many (including me) will sometimes wax nostalgic about the arcades of yesteryear, there's not too many instances of people complaining about current home gaming being "inferior" to the arcade experience, as was once the case. So it's not that I think mobile hardware will completely replace PC's for gaming (and this applies to both mobile gaming in general and PCVR vs. Standalone VR). But look at mobile games now vs. what they once were. There are mobile games that are at the graphical level at least of console hardware from not that long ago. Mobile chipsets are never likely to surpass what large power-hungry GPU's in a large box can do. But I do think we'll get to a point where people don't care. Just as the convenience and capabilities of home consoles became good enough that people didn't feel as much need to plug $5 worth of quarters into a machine in an arcade, the quality of standalone VR will get to the point where most people aren't going to feel like they're missing out on a lot by not having a $2,500 PC and a $1,000 HMD. They'll be happy with the quality and convenience they get from standalone VR. A lot of people are already there. There'll always be enthusiasts like myself of course, that love their racing rigs and sims, and the titles that at present haven't been able to be replicated for standalone VR. But the gap is closing and I think eventually it will be close enough that the average player won't care. VR just has to remain successful enough as an industry long enough for that to happen. I'm actually encouraged by The Big Videogame Crash of the late 80's. Many thought videogames were dead for good and that it would never recover. That everything that could be done with the format had already been done and tried. But the industry survived, came back, innovated, and went on to become what it is today. VR can do this too. It may wane for a time, or slow down, but I think it will survive all of the "VR is ded" declarations and naysayers. It's such a unique compelling technology with 1,001 uses for gaming, productivity, and a multitude of industries. The genie is NOT going back into that bottle. What say all of you? Cheers Mateo311 and all my fellow VR nerds and enthusiasts. And sorry for the wall of words lol.

I think there is a LOT of low hanging fruit out there that could recharge the PC VR industry. Starfield VR would be great. That alone would keep me satisfied for a year or more. Getting a true VR port of Red Dead Redemption 2 or GTA V would also be amazing for PC VR in general. How about Baldur's Gate 3 or the Witcher 3? More challenging to port to VR, however, done right these 5 million + player games could really drive the industry.

"I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed." Seriously though, this sort of sums up my feelings. Yes, I would have loved to see more amazing Alyx style PCVR games and gone down the immersion route. And I am mildly disappointed that we are moving in another direction. But in general, I currently feel pretty great about the state of VR. More and better hardware is coming out every year, and so are more and great games. It feels like things are still slowly picking up speed, and I am here for it.

I'm very much a fan of the classic PCVR games from the golden Age of VR, 2017 to 2020, but I'm positive about the future. I think Asgard's Wrath 2 was the start of the return to those days, and I'm excited to see Batman and Alien. I think those will look better on Q3 than some are expecting, and I think once we see that, people will start to realize that VR is once again on the rise. I love your videos, and I agree with the positivity. I think Meta has a long plan in the works, and it's starting to come together now.

The only issue with VR now is the graphics on standalone. That will 100% change. Handhelds like the SteamDeck have pushed the mobile chips further than ever before, laptops are now powerhouses and I think VR will grow fast too. But it does feel like a step back when compared to PC graphics

Honestly, I'm not jaded at all about VR. The reason being that yeah the old days of Oculus were amazing, but VR will reach that point again, but it reverted to a lower stage so it could rebuild with better hardware and with more market competition. I think once it does catch up, chances are it will progress much faster than it might have done before. Also, old VR was amazing, but noone really cared about it, outside of the enthusiasts, but this time, there will be much more people paying attention to the improvements.

I've always overwhelmingly used my Quest 2 and 3 for PCVR. Very little standalone, although there's some great titles. I'm not remotely jaded about it, and use VR daily. I did expect by now most major PC game releases would have a VR mode, and it's disappointing that instead we've seen the shift to standalone, and a lot of smaller and more casual titles rather than large immersive worlds (particularly because I've never owned a console or smart phone, and these aren't my taste in games). I'm far from out of content though, and that's with an hour or two of VR almost every day.

I actually think this year is one of the most exciting in a while for PCVR. Having PSVR 2 seems to have opened more devs to making bigger experiences on the platform. Especially excited for Metro VR, Alien Rogue Incursion, Gunman Contracts Standalone and Wanderer Fragments of Fates. Speaking of Wanderer, the devs have actually opened up their work so that other developers can use their framework for future VR titles. Which would essentially give them access to much more polished mechanics and saving them a lot of time implementing them. Hopefully this will lead to more devs taking a chance on PCVR. The challenge is actually getting people to support the games when they come out. Sales for PCVR, even for very polished games, is looking increasingly dire. I really hope when the games mentioned above come out, VR players really support the games and show that there is still life in the platform.

I think, jaded is not the right word, i'd say spoiled, because let's be honest, we have, high res, high framerate, standalone VR now, almost now screendoor, native tracking, handgestures. I think there also a bit of nostalgia there, the feeling of "special" or "exclusive" as it was in the beginning, being pioneers type of thing, now it's mainstream which is great, VR has stepped out of the novelty territory and is, to me at least, in the baby stages of being awesome! Out of the prototype phase and in to the future, it has survived!! Where it could have easily been forgotten or have a really, REALLY low technical advancement, with a high price hanging on it!

You just can't compare standalone graphics to PCVR. If I have to play Contractor$, I play on Steam or Rift/Oculus. Contractors Showdown, PC version. If there is a PC version, I'll go for the PC version. The only game I would probably just go to the standalone is Eleven Table tennis or the Forever Games and Walkabout mini golf. I don't see the difference on fidelity as much. I hope they won't totally move away from the PC. Overall, I'm here for the long haul. I will also defend the standalone for portability. It might take several more years for graphics to catch up. The Quest 3 is a good start. I just recently bought a RTX 4070. Brought new life to all my PC including PCVR games. Playing Hal-Life Alyx at a very high FPS rate.

Or use highest end wireless tech to push the render to the headset and just keep the device near you - within 20 meters or so.

The problem with VR overall is stagnancy. We had really great looking and playing games, and we have tons of indie garbagey wave shooter games. I think most VR gamers prefer story and content over quick jump in and out. (Im sure those are around as well) I went from PCVR where graphics were amazing to MetaVR(?) and its back in potato stage. Content is the main issue. Games either look or play like theyre made for a 5th grader, vs for the people who actually are spending the money on the hardware. The ones that are polished and play well, are few and far between. Lastly, 100% for you sharing your point of view. You're not here to please everybody, but to share your opinions and likeminded people will follow your posts. I used to have Index (on the selling block right now) and got a a Q3 and I love the fact I can use it anywhere in the house for PCVR and anywhere I want for mobile VR. The hardware does need some work, but its almost there. Games and companies now have to invest in content to draw people to VR though.

Jumping in only last year I certainly am a lot more happy with standalone games as well as being able to go back and experience some of the older PCVR masterpieces. I do want to know though, when do you think standalone will be on par with power required to run Half Life Alyx, Azgards Wrath 1 and that era of PCVR?

"when do you think standalone will be on par with power required to run Half Life Alyx" quest 2 already can run hl:a, it is not a performance problems, but money you need to make game run on weak hardware , and have good visuals , good visuals cost a lot of money, good visuals that run on weak hardware cost multiple time more ( never forget gta5 was on xbox 360 )

Really agree with you points at 10:00 and on. Graphics did take a massive knock to go to Quest at the cost of immersion. But when I say that to quest users (I own quest 3 for PCVR) they get so defensive. For me VR is about immersion and getting taken to another reality. I don't really get in to the more casual quest games, but there are a few I really like , Underdogs for example is great. I have enjoyed the better graphics and immersion of PSVR2, but then thats another toxic topic.

I wonder if those who complain, are happy about anything? I don't mean that in a judgmental way, but it is easy to get into a negative mindset. Once you are there it is hard to find the good in anything. This is not limited to gaming, it is with movies, comics, politics, food, and just about anything that has a following. Also, I think that a combination of High expectations and a lack of patience creates discontentment. How many flat-screen games are blowing people's minds? I see complaints about those as well. One more thought for those who hate the mobile gaming of the Quest line. If there is going to be any future in PCVR it will be through people buying into those more affordable headsets, and eventually moving to Steam games. The traffic on Steam VR is mostly Q2 and Q3, If a developer is going to produce something for PCVR it is going to be because there are enough potential customers. Adding millions to the player base is not a bad thing, AAA games cost to make so they need to have people who will buy it. Personally, I think VR is great, there is more stuff available than I have time to play. I haven't even tried the UEVR mode for flat-to-VR stuff.

Jaded, I would say not really, but, there are some things as a Prosumer(If you are buying VR you really aren't a consumer its a premium market) I would like to see. Hardware Wise - - With Pancake lenses a decent resolution I think the only thing lens wise is just a larger FOV and Display panels that while the Resolution I think a bump in htz above 120 to 200htz would solve all the issues with being uncomfortable and motion sickness. We also need HDR quality panels with better backlighting. - Battery tech is on its way, we have made so many breakthroughs in the past couple years, its more just a matter at this point of companies getting manufacturing up and going, so something like the Quests 2 hours will turn into 6 hours with a 15min charge time, although heavier for the same given cubic space I think the issues can easily be mitigated. - Controller wise and Tracking Wise, I think Hybrid tracking is the way to go, If I could take a headset on the go and have the camera tracking, but at home be able to use the Index stations for the precision that would be a clear winner. Something like the Pro controllers with a better Index like Finger tracking when holding a controller would be amazing. - USB Type C DisPlay port compatibility, there is zero reason why the Quest 3 did not have this, I should be able to use my GPU as it is supposed to be used instead of limitation in Compression, Meta are idiots for this, they could have easily sold more if they would just listen up. - WIFI 7 will pretty much solve VR wireless issues, it needs to just be adopted quickly with an encoder that allows for compression of games without loss inn fidelity and artifacting - Ray Tracing support when PCVR is engaged - Standalone headsets with their own ecosystem, while allowing a more premium experience that is no compromises when connected to a PC. Quest 3 is great on 1 side while being half assed and an afterthought on the other side. Software Wise - - Windows VR specifically made for VR from the ground up. VR will not be taken mainstream until this problem is solved. - Hybrid tracking baked in use of Laser and Camera tracking methods used together, Full Body tracking can very very easily be handled by Camera positioning rather than having a bunch of nodes strapped to the body. - Something like Proton to natively run PCVR apps using Linux based OS and ARM Emulation both ways - A specific Game Engine like Unreal written from the ground up for VR to accelerate AAA and AA studios facilitating game franchise transitions - More games translated to VR in a proper way, HL Alyx is a great example of what can be achieved where FPS games can be taken and translated to a more thought out, slower paced experience - More Horror and genres that lend to what VR can offer in scope of Atmosphere and Immersion, need games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls to be properly adapted into VR. This is a case where Stealth games can make a huge come back - Classic games transitioned to VR like RE4 was able to do, we need a new Studio like Nightdive but specifically does VR implementations of high end franchises.

I have been a bit jaded lately when it comes to pcvr, I wish it was still somewhat of a focus for certain companies, but it isn’t anymore, but I haven’t nearly complained about it as much as I’ve just started rapidly losing interest in vr as a whole because of how stale the hardware and software actually is, pcvr games feel so good because quest games feel like how those mass produced mobile games feel, they feel sterile and just pretty boring for the most part, I miss when companies like slz or valve actually seemed like they used to care, but now they either spend an eternity updating their stuff, or they just don’t do anything at all it seems, I’ve basically accepted that the vr I got into isn’t around anymore, and vr nowadays feels like, like I said before, like phone gaming, and that’s not what I signed up for personally, I don’t really care for the fact that standalone will get better with graphics and resolution, it’s more about the open nature of a pc, having free reign over what you can do with your software and/or hardware, and while it’s pretty funny meta calls themselves open, they’re absolutely not, and if the industry follows in their footsteps it’s toast tbh, like come on, this is the exact same company that misused oculus’ potential just to basically create the next smartphone, and you’re telling us to just be okay with it, like I get it, and I’m not trying to sound mad or anything about it, it’s just hard to stand with that when we saw what happened to oculus and what it ended up becoming, you can’t expect a lot of people, especially the jaded, to think that this is a good thing, because considering what we could have had, what we have now is garbage in comparison, and I’m not mad about it, I’m just severely disappointed that it came out the way it did, and that there’s nothing we can really do to bring that back that I know of, I’m tired of the “baby food” games that this industry has been trying to tell us are high end titles, when all they are is games for people to get into vr with and afterwards never pick up a headset again, because there isn’t any actually good games that haven’t already existed for years, and all the fun kinda crappy games are only on steam, because meta won’t let them on their store, so I think on all ends it definitely could have been better, it’s just that Facebook just HAD to buy oculus and turn it into a smartphone for your face, and then proceed to leave the real vr fans in the dust and only make things for babies, you wanna know why there’s so many kids in vr? Well it’s cuz Mr zuckerf*ck decided that all the games and content should make it look like it is for kids, thus cues the idiot parents to get their kid something much more mentally damaging than a phone or iPad, this could very well be the worst possible timeline for vr, especially if the highest rated pcvr app is vrchat of all things (Sorry for the long comment, I just wanted to get my full thoughts on it out, also some things I wanted to get off my chest included)
