Great car! A proper allround usable electric SUV. Thank You Volvo! This is what's needed to get people to buy EVs, a car that you can use for everything.

Hi Kris: congratulations. This is THE best test I’ve seen so far. Realistic, down-to-earth information. Honest, enthusiastic, unbiased. The sort of information an older Dutch guy wants to have for his first full electric car. Driving more or less the same way you’re doing (in the test at least...). @kris it seems Volvo has now implemented pre-heating of battery in the latest update. When you charge with 90-100% limit it will also heat up the battery to lower the consumption of the first 20-50 km a lot to even more extend the range the car gives :)

Thank you Kris - and THANK you VOLVO for a fantastic car. I am currently waiting for my P6 version, and I am expecting it to be even better. Had the P8 for testing for 2 days, and it was hard to let go of it. Man what a car. Fantastic build quality, relaxing drive, peace and quiet (actually I won't need my headset in the car anymore), and best of all, it will save me a lot of money in the daily economy, and save my fellow citizens for a lot of emissions, when I drive by. Will you be doing a test of the P6 version?

Very impressed and perplexed at the same time as so many people are putting the P8 at 25-30+kw/100km for average driving. I have no doubt you got this, but this seems to be the best case range I have seen. Would love to see more around town numbers as as thirsty as this thing is to get moving I wonder if city driving is better or worse than what you are getting.

Kris, you commented on the seeming less on the roadway. Actually it is when there is traffic. The kinetic forward movement of the vehicles creates drag and pushes the air forward. If you are one of the lead cars, and/or driving faster than the others, you will have more drag, lower efficiency. However, you were driving slower and following, so you were receiving the advantage of drafting off the other cars. That helps the efficiency a lot. Someone commented on how low efficiency the P8 is at 125 km/h. That would make sense.

@villho

I own a P8. This video proves that even with bad aerodynamics you can get decent consumption _if_ you are willing to slow your speed. However, set 125 km/h to the cruise control and those percentages start to come down much more rapidly. One other thing: Volvo has some work to do in the thermal management. When the car and the cabin are cold, the consumption figures for the first 10 km are just plain ugly. I don't know how well the heat pump works, but it sure looks like that making heat to the cabin puts the consumption to +40 kWh/100 km easily.
@TheNittah
@TheNittah 3 года назад
Is it possible to preheat the car while being plugged in before starting the drive to avoid this?
@villho
@villho 3 года назад
@@TheNittah Yes it is and it indeed helps in those first few kms to lower the consumption. My comment was more to say that it in P8 the heating seems to use absurdly high amount of electricity. I'm guessing that the resistive element is on full power, even though it necessarily shouldn't need to be. Also, pre-heating P8 at the moment is a bit cumbersome due to the complete lack of mobile access/Volvo OnCall app (latest "promise" is for July), as pre-heating requires either setting the timer beforehand or going to the car and putting the pre-heating on immediately. To be noted: car doesn't necessarily need to be plugged in for pre-heating.
@nicotut88
@nicotut88 3 года назад
@@villho that is a good observation. I own a P8 as well. Setting the temperatur to 18 degrees in the cabin still makes it blow out really warm air the first 15 min of driving, even though the cabin feels warm and comfy. That indeed uses a lot of power
@villho
@villho 3 года назад
@@nicotut88 Do you use AUTO setting in HVAC? Just asking because I use manual 18-19, fan speed 1-2 and often AC off (as it hasn't gotten that warm in Finland yet), because this seems to help to mitigate the high HVAC consumption a bit.

that equals out to be 239 US miles.. that is absolutely crap. I talked to the local Volvo dealer and he told me a story, trying to sell the cars range as very good, about how he went to a town about 100 miles away during the dead of winter.. He only had a small amount of charge left after getting there and had to recharge. So, this same EV went, or would have gone, roughly 150 US miles in the winter. That is just crap!

Can these cars be fitted with special solar panels on the roof, as it would make sense, charging as it's driven?
@ChristianMansfield
@ChristianMansfield 2 года назад
No, and it would only make sense to use solar panels to charge the small 12V battery or maybe help cool the cabin. You might be able to get 400W of power from a rooftop panel (in ideal conditions), so it would take a minimum of 2.5 hours to add 1kWh of charge to the battery, and this car has a 77kWh battery. On the drive shown in this video, 100%-0% SoC, a solar panel would not be able to contribute more than 2% charge to the battery. Not much, unfortunately.
