It IS explained that it's her old parents place, and that it was her's now that they were gone, so that much at least has an explanation. Though the taxes would be practically impossible for a woman of her salary to handle.
I think the reason he might be so calm is that the crone literally told him the amulet would take him far away to a strange world, so it's not as if he wasn't warned that this would happen. Sure it's all very strange, but he was expecting it.
I think overall him freaking out a more realistic amount just wouldn't have fit the mood the movie was going for. Like if say they had scenes of him brooding on how everyone he knows has been dead for centuries. It just would not fit the tone of a movie like this at all.😂
There's also the thought that he had just been magically transported to a distant land in the future. When actual magic is something you've encountered, modern devices are unlikely to seem stranger.
It kind of reminds me of Zombieland Saga. The oldest (that is, longest dead) zombie idol in that show, when asked how she, a Meiji era entertainer, is dealing so well with the modern day, she confesses to basically not worrying about how strange it all is. The world is very different from the one she left, so she just accepts it on face value.
I really liked your point that you only need to believe the story that's being told, not necessarily believe unbelievable things. I hadn't been able to clarify why some unbelievable things land and some don't.
The way I see it, stories need to make sense in the context of their universe. Is magic real? OK, I'll accept that. Are the rules of magic consistent? No? That's problematic. As long as stories follow logical rules, or are at least _consistent_ in some way (even spoofs where the point is to be as loony-tunes as possible), then it's fine and just comes down to personal taste. Much like how if things inexplicably disappear and reappear, and events appear out of order, people will lose immersion when the rules are inconsistent. It's basically all just under the umbrella of continuity. I'm not a sports fan personally, but I imagine that there would be very few fans of any sport where the rules changed at random.
This is exactly the thing nerds get made fun of for all the time, frustratingly. When we complain about something not making sense in, say, Star Wars, we get told "But it's about space wizards with laser swords, so it's okay!" But we're not complaining about technology that doesn't exist or superpowers that aren't real, we're frustrated when they don't have any consistency, when there are no rules or the rules are thrown overboard a half hour after being explained to us. There can't be any stakes or drama when things just happen for no reason; at that point it's just a random series of events. This universe has a time traveling magic lady; okay, fine, it's established early and consistently followed, and that's okay.
Indeed. The plot's premise is nonsense and barely justified in-universe. But it _FEELS_ earned, because the movie has an emotional believability. It is, to steal a word from Folding Ideas, _Verisimilitudinous._
Exactly. People can't seem to truly enjoy the Bee Movie for what it is because of how "weird" it is.... A fucking movie about a talking bee suing humanity 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
I wonder if he has brain damage from either mercury or lead exposure. People weren't aware of their effects in that time period. Mercury was being used to treat STIs like syphilis for centuries.
It's silly and cheesy and harmless. As a knitter/crocheter, I was hooked on Vanessa's insane sweaters...I have patterns very like them and they are all from the 80s.
I recently read the first two Omnibus volumes of Maison Ikkoku and I want to knit all the knitwear that appears in it. Not that it's still in fashion...
That's one of the things I was bothered by - the Knight would have spoken a very odd version of English to our ears. I mean, it's a romcom. I'm not expecting a story for the ages, but still.
For some reason it was personal hygiene which kept bothering me - coming from the 14th century, he's not going to smell too pleasant and his teeth would probably be quite off-putting!
@@OddtwangofDork I think his teeth would actually be fine. Not American-white perhaps but sugar wasn't all that available to most people so he might have had quite strong teeth.:)
A stray dog with a Christmas outfit on and looking very healthy and domesticated? Surely you jest. It's obviously the wonderful power of the fabled Christmas magic.
@@theghostofthomasjenkins9643 santa brought it. Its a Christmas movie that is always the explanation esp if santa is stated to not be real to prove that he is.
Ok, So. I have to laugh, my brother and his best friend make armor (like legit armor they have spent the last 7 years forging two full suits of armor out of steel). I have helped make a very small amount, and I'm apart of their suit up team. Armor is made to go on in a specific order, and takes at least one other person who knows that order to put it on you. And I have to wonder, how long it took the hospital to take it off, and how he got it back on himself 😂
Good point. I'm also wondering how effective that particular armour would be. I mean, plate is fine, but the chainmail hood? On the one hand, the hood covering his chest and shoulders makes sense, providing extra protection against cuts, but on the other hand, it looks a bit wonky. Maybe because it's not properly fitted to the actor? Also, he should be wearing a padded helm or some such. Also, also, is that hood really chainmail, or just knit-mail?
"modern technology is lit AF" I had to pause the video to catch my breath, my roommate knocked on my door to see i was okay because i was laughing too hard
Me and my partner watched the movie first before your review... and we loved it, was super corny and silly but hilarious. We then immediately watched your review and laughed all the way through and you're 100% correct in your analysis. Brilliant review and thanks for helping us find this surprisingly fun Christmas movie
Isn't the puppy meant to be the niece's reward for selflessly wishing for a boyfriend for her aunt, to the crone lady? That'd be my interpretation of it's sudden appearance
My headcanon is that Cole wanted to drink mead with his parents when he was a child, so his mother gave him hot chocolate and told him it was mead. When he became an adult and tried actual mead, he thought it tasted terrible and would only drink “his mother’s mead”.
"I want a hot British hunk to slay my Ex and worship the ground I walk on"... well don't we all. Nice video. I usually like watching your videos about movies/tv shows even more than the movie/show itself. Keep up the good work and happy holidays.
Totally agree. I prefer it when my mum tells me about a film she has watched, or a book she has read rather than having to do it myself. Mostly because they are not my kind of thing, and the way she talks about it is very good.
One of the things about these movies that really bugs me is the language issue. Sir Cole isn't just speaking a dialect of English. He should be almost, probably completely, unintelligable to modern ears. He'd be speaking, at best, Middle English, or Old Norman. Old Norman has a lot of French influence and Middle English has a lot of different pronunciation and words that have different meanings to what they do today.
Now I want a recreation of this that is completely unintelligible to the average viewer where the teacher is a professor of that specific period and is the only person that has a general idea of what Cole is even trying to say. Shenanigans and misunderstandings ensue, but 98% of us don't understand a second of it.
That's a thing with a lot of stories that deal with time-travel. In Les Visiteurs the characters recognized de Montmirail was speaking a mix of old French and Latin, but nobody had any problems understanding him (that said, Jean Reno was actually speaking modern French). In Ivan Vasilievich: Back to the Future characters communicated with each other without much trouble (just occasionally using older words or expression), even though they're supposed to be some 300-400 years apart, and in one scene the film director tried talking to Ivan Vasilievich using a couple of old Russian\ old Slav words, but ended up failing miserably, both because he didn't actually know the language he's trying to speak, and because Ivan Vasilievich didn't speak it either. All in all, it's just a matter of convenience for the audience. I remember there was some story or movie I've seen long ago, where they actually explained that when you time-travel, you automatically learn to speak and understand the local language. It was not scientific, of course, but it was an in-universe explanation for something that's fantasy otherwise. After all, we can't travel through time like that, so who's to say what it's like?
Haven't seen this yet, but the way you've described Cole reminds me of my brothers. Cook well, good with kids, faithful to their spouses, go out of their way to be nice to me, threaten my ex boyfriends with bodily harm, all of it. Other people see this type of character and think "It'd be great if that was reality" and move on. I think "I know this type of man exists, why can't I find one I'm not related to?" and stay single.
@@new-lviv That's pretty true, the more rural areas do seem to have a more traditional mindset when it comes to relationships. I live in the right kind of place, even met a few very nice people who ended up married to my friends and room mates. I just never had any luck myself.
I read fanfic. If I didn’t care about the viewpoints of thirsty women of a certain age, I would be unable to enjoy most fanfic. Besides, I may not enjoy this type of movie, but I enjoy watching PUR enjoy things! That sounded creepy. I mean I just enjoy find joy in others joy and enthusiasm. It’s infectious and as someone who struggles to find that in myself often, it genuinely nice to see it elsewhere.
I write paranormal romance novels, so I'll never accuse someone of just being a thirsty woman of a certain age. And now that you've broken down this movie, I know that I might enjoy it a little, but still don't need to watch it ;)
I’m a 20-something dude who is a sucker for paranormal-romance dreck (as long as it’s not actively problematic) and is actually writing something like that myself, so... XD

In the movies whenever England is shown during the yule tide its always snowing. And coming from England and spending my life here I can tell you during Christmas its usual raining and around 15.c I have never seen snow during xmas.
Now, yeah. But in Sir Cole's era, we were still getting winters so cold that the Thames would sometimes freeze solid enough for people to have a funfair and build an actual market on the ice.
@@PassTheMarmalade1957 it didn't happen that regularly according to records. Something that should be noted however is the fact that for the formative years of Charles Dickens childhood its was some of the coldest winters on record and snowed every Christmas for around 10 years. And Dickens interpretations of England covered in snow have gone on to represent England in general over Christmas.
Aha, but you see, back in those days, it was in fact colder. There is a global event called the "Little Ice Age" that ran from about 500 to 1850, where the average global temperature was just a smidge lower. This resulted in England having some actually snowy winters. Up until Victorian times, for example there was enough ice on the Thames that they had fairs out on the water, complete with tents. This small ice age is what is presumed to have caused both the fall of the Roman Empire, and the Black Plague spreading, because it was just overall a slightly harder time for people, but slowly Europeans adapted. Today, however, the temperatures in the UK are now back to what they were in Roman times, so much more mild, and able to grow grapes and certain other fruits again that struggled for some centuries. They still do not have a fully understood reason for this drop in temperatures, but some believe that it might have been more sun spots than normal, reducing solar radiation and heat, because it far outstripped what any of the global volcanic activity in the time frame could have done.
I'll be honest, when I saw "Knight" in the title, I thought it was going to be about a Forever Knight Christmas special. Wait wait wait, at 5:12 did he ACTUALLY exclaim "Pajabbers"??? I did not expect a random Dave the Barbarian reference in a Netflix Christmas rom-com! Also it's funny you bring up Baba Yaga in your example of a "Crone", because in Russian folklore there are many stories of Baba Yaga taking the form of a beautiful woman to trick men who go into the woods looking for her (sometimes either to kill her or to ask something of her, and then take part in "tests" to prove themselves worthy) or to entrance young women from a local village to live with her in her home. But I have found that in more pagan circles, Baba Yaga is revered as the wisened old crone, where as outside of those, people see Baba Yaga as more sinister.
@@georgeoldsterd8994 LOL it as it has all been imbibed. It was good. Batch three was the real hero though a summer mead with lemon and lime zest and a super light honey
We are all rich upper class royals so please ignore my tiny flat and weekly trips to the local fish 'n chips stand with some former football hooligan tattoo covered relatives.
My coffee-addled, sleep-deprived mind briefly misread that title screen as "The KNIFE Before Christmas," and the stylized sword just reinforced it. Also, said addled mind was not ready for "pee is stored in the balls," and now my chest hurts from all the laughing. Dammit, Roses!
I couldn't put my finger fully on why I didn't dislike this movie as much as others I've seen but you put it into words for me, thank you (we also shared the same frustrations).
This is a bit like a western female equivalant of the common Anime where an Alien/Snake/Zombie/Male/Ghost Hot girl lands into the life of a very average dude and they fall in love.
@@Jacob-wr8hw It's usually in a TV Show format rather than Movie, like To Love Ru, Monster Musume, Urusei Yatsura, Nyaruko: Crawling With Love!, Heaven's Lost Property, Kanokon, Waiting in the Summer etc
Hah! My wife discovered this one and started watching it. I, a man in my mid 40s.... was pleasantly surprised. (She started it before I got off work, so I came to it probably 30 min in.)
i don’t think rose gets enough love for her good writing on the scripts for these videos. the little jokes and jabs always puts a smile on my face. really enjoyed this video and might have to check out the movie.
There was a scene you showed early on that made me say, Oh, Santa is real. So Santa brought the puppy, not a problem. And no, I'm not watching it again to identify the scene. ROSES, you left out the clear moral of the story, which is If you love something set it free....She let him go to live his life and he retuned to her, sniffle!
Honestly the best part of this movie is HE is the one who abandons the past to be with HER, rather than her ditching the present to be with him, which is how that *usually* seems to go.
Hardcore wince at 1:20 with the mail coif directly on the poor man's hair. Arming caps were a thing for a reason, costume designers! I hope for his sake he had a wig on.
No joke, I despise the "Romantic False Lead" trope and its sub-trope the "Disposable Fiancé", mostly because it's rarely executed well and it's really overplayed in these types of movies, and the fact that you found a Christmas rom-com without it is kind of refreshing.
God SAME. I think the only instance where I accepted it (though I didn't like it) was "Sweet Home Alabama" purely because Dempsey's fiance character had an interesting arc about him standing up to his overbearing, appearances obsessed mother by being a good person who can let the protagonist go. His mother got rejected and became bitter, and he goes "Oh, so this is what this feels like" when HE gets rejected and it seems... Like a growth moment for him as a person? It was bittersweet and made him respectable and I just... He was such a good guy. HE WAS SUCH A GOOD GUY.
Personally, I'd rather watch the SciFi channel/horror movie version: *A Knightmare Before Christmas* (Even if the killer-knight-ghost-whatever would be a bad computer animation) But what do I know. I like Jack Frost, too, after all.
Sir Cole reminds me of my partner.... but with a much more relevant sense of humor. My partner is kind, sweet, loving, funny, romantic in the cheesiest of ways, would do anything for anyone who asks nicely, and has become my everything. What I want to achieve by saying this is... don’t settle. There is someone amazing out there for you. They may not be Sir Cole “hot”, but if you connect with someone who shares you likes and treats you well, that is where love starts. It’s shaky and confusing at the start, but your understanding with each other and your ability to make each other laugh can carry you thru.
@@Formoka Of course it matters. Quit pretending nothing matters. I am asexual myself, so I am sympathetic to you, but this whole thing is about...are there any good men/women relationships
"Modern technology is lit af." Nope. I'm done. I made it that far, but I can go no further. I don't look down on others for enjoying this kind of thing, but oh holy god I could go the rest of my life and never see anything like this again.
So I noticed that in the clip you showed when they were leaving the hospital, the ambulance was marked with "Bracebridge Ambulance", which was odd because the town in this is definitely not named Bracebridge. Then the clip of them in the store when he's picking up all the cans of hot chocolate, there was the tail of a store mascot on the wall behind them. The store itself is called Giant Tiger and its a fairly large(ish) chain of discount stores in Canada. I also recognized several of the brands on the shelves as being Canadian products as well. Putting all this together leads me to suspect that this was actually filmed in Bracebridge Ontario, a small town roughly 2 hours north of Toronto and home to Santa's Village, which is a little christmas themed theme park. Seems like they had access to some easy christmas sets!
Not what I expected from a PUR video, but was definitely a PUR video. This made me so happy to watch. And now im gonna watch this movie cuz I need this stuff in my life.
Speaking personally I love feel good wholesome schmaltz. I'm also into tales of noble kind hearted Knights going around being noble and kind hearted. So I think I'll enjoy this movie a lot.
The thing that impressed me in this movie is the scene with the old lady. I was expecting for the knight to be asshole to her on the basis that she might be a witch or something, but his first instinct was to worry about her being all alone in the cold. This helps to establish that he's a chivalrious type and he has a good heart, while avoiding tired cliches. Kudos, Netflix.
Does anyone else think that the actor playing the knight character would make for an excellent Doctor in Doctor Who? He's already got the big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey thing going on.
"He thinks he's a 14th century knight, which is obviously crazy." And his lack of medical records, poorly or not healed injuries, layers of dirt and lack of showers, the presence of zero soap anywhere on his skin, his multiple infections, his rapidly aged body, his period accurate middle English, and his early onset hair loss are all completely fine by hospital standards.
As a man in his 30s who loves Hallmark xmas movies, i heartily endorse this video review and look forward to more. PS: Hallmark also makes spring/summer/fall romance movies, and they are just as bizarre!
I would definitely like to see you cover more of these silly hallmark movies! I've seen a few reviews of this movie but they were all from a male perspective so their opinions were very different to yours, lol. It's interesting to hear a woman's perspective on it! I think your review was really fair, and pretty funny, definitely would love to see more videos like this!!
I don't really watch these movies, aside from when I'll catch bits when my mom watches them (it's easy to get sucked in if I don't stop myself), but this is one I might have to look into. At very least I'm going to let her know that she needs to watch it. She's also been talking about wanting to watch Love Actually this year, which made me laugh at that joke more than I might have normally. And you're right, Circle is adorable. Thanks for this review, whether I end up watching or not, this was a great video.
I didn't notice the crone being mrs Claus. Before Cole and Brooke met, the niece asks for a puppy and a boyfriend for her aunt. When you said it I realised she probably decided in that moment to make sure the two met. The magic puppy is a confirmation that it was her.
this movie was so cute! i watched it wrapping presents and loved it. my husband and I are still saying "old crone?! OLD CRONE!!" hehe Happy Holidays everyone!!
My mom and I watched this last year as I was showing her the wonderful world of bad Christmas movies. This one was actually really nice. So many tropes end up making you not actually root for the relationship but this was very cute.
I would like to thank you for wasting a whole day watching your channel. Not bothered at all about your views on tv and films, but what drew me in was your love for point and click adventures. I'm a 47 year old Brit who back in the late 80's early 90's loved that type of genre of gaming. I thought i played alot of the Sierra games, but i'm amazed to see how many i missed back then. Oh and my all time favourite p&c game was Zack Mccracken and the alien mind benders. Keep up the good work and hope to see more P&C video's from your good self 😁👍
PushingUpRoses is my favorite thirsty woman of a certain age on RU-vid. Be proud of it, there's nothing wrong with liking hot, charming men and sappy romances. I love hearing you talk about what interests you, even if much of it isn't what I'm into. Came here for the adventure games, stayed for the charming reviews about murder she wrote and goosebumps episodes and I guess Christmas rom-coms now.
"I'm sufficiently wooed"... that was so sudden it made me laugh waaay too much. Anyway, seems like a sweet movie - and I HATE rom-coms! And also, you made me genuinely happy when you said this movie isn't a masterpiece but that you didn't need it to be one, because the important things was that you got enjoyment from it. I often find myself in situations I like a movie lots of people dislike or even hate. And they judge me for liking it, or start explaning to me why is it bad, as if it was "you should hate it too, and this is why". And I loathe that kind of behavior. What does it MATTER if it is a masterpiece, utter garbage, or anything in-between? If I like it and if it makes me happy, then that makes it a movie that is "good for me", even if it isn't a "good movie". And even if I don't even SEE why people think it's so bad, then... what does it change? It still makes me happy, and it is also a "good movie in my opinion". And opinions are subjective. So explaining to me why is it supposed to be bad and why should I hate it gets even more dumb. One of the best examples I can name for that from the last couple of years is the Cats movie, which is genuinely one of my favorite movies ever made, and one of the things that really brings me such a joy everytime I watch it.
I agree with your point: things in a story don't necessarily need to be realistic, they just need to be feel natural to the story you're watching. this was something Grant Morrison explained in Supergods and I've never forgotten it.
Thanks for a luvly video, Roses! My personal preference leans to the wild, off-the-rails holiday made-for-TV movies. I was thrilled watching Hudgens ham it up as the villain in Princess Switch 2 (I only wish it had been MORE about her heist specifically, I agree there were too many other characters and side stories taking up time in it.) My other favorite BIZARRE holiday movies are "A Snow White Christmas" and "Snowmance" by ION TV. And probably my favorite cozy, heartwarming movie is "The Holiday" (I know you've mentioned The Holiday in the past, and I really hope someday you consider making a video about it because it's SO CHARMING and yet no one else seems to know of it!)
I actually liked this one when I saw it last year. (Okay, I'm gay, and Sir Cole, good gracious, eye candy) I think that the one little thing that annoyed me was that Cole did not use 'thee' and 'thou' in his language. I just think that they could have gone the extra mile by giving him some more period language, even if they didn't have him talking full Old English.
