I really appreciate your podcast. I was fascinated by your account of turning to the scriptures (literally) for help. When I was in the MTC preparing to serve a mission in Santiago, Chile, my father back in Arkansas became very ill. I prayed to have the strength that if my father were to pass away that I would be able to stay on my mission. I even asked my mission president for a priesthood blessing. My parents were less active at the time, and I had never before had a priesthood blessing. A few days passed and my father seemed to make a recovery, but then I received a phone call from my sister stating that my father had suddenly passed away. I was devastated. My mother who lived alone in a rural area and was not able to drive would be all alone. What was I to do. I went into a custodial closet to be by myself. There among the brooms, mops and cleaning supplies, I opened my heart to my Heavenly Father. I had never before in my life prayed like that. I asked my Heavenly Father to let me know what I should do. If I should stay on my mission and go to South America or to return and take care of my mother. I knew in my heart of hearts that if I went back to my father's funeral that I would have stayed and not continued on my mission. I needed answers. I returned to my room and I knew with all my heart the Lord would give me the answer that I needed. I got out my scriptures and I opened them to the New Testament, my eyes were drawn to a verse it said something like "Let the dead bury their dead and come follow me." I felt that was a little harsh, and wasn't quite sure what to do with it. So I closed the Bible and opened up my triple combination to The Book of Mormon and let the pages fall open and as I did I read the verses where the sons of Mosiah we're asking permission to go and teach the Lamanites. They were allowed to go to teach the lamanites. As I read that I knew that I was to fulfill my desire to go un to the descendants of Lamanites in Chile. That verse spoke to me almost as if the Lord were right there. I feel that he was. I left that room with a knowledge and a determination of exactly what I was to. I did not attend my father's funeral. My less active brother and his family promised to care for my mother. I went and served a mission in a country whose people I grew to love more than I ever thought possible. I know with all my heart I did what the Lord wanted me to do at that time. I am now 60 years old, and I have never had an experience with the scriptures exactly like the one that I had when I was in the MTC, but I know that whenever I really need the Lord's help to me direct me in my life; He will be there for me. When I joined the church in 1976, I felt exactly like the last story you shared about the parents attending a different church that focused on Jesus. I remember as a new convert noticing that a lot of focus was on Joseph Smith. I wasn't deterred because I didn't yet have a testimony of Joseph Smith at that time, so I figured I was misjudging the church. Line upon line, my perspective changed. I love that over the years Jesus has become the central focus of his church. Thank you, John, for preparing these wonderful classes.

There's an ancient practice I learned and love that came to mind during this video. It's called Lectio Divina, which means divine reading. You explained the first two steps, you pray and read. Next you get an impression in the reading, then pray about the impression 🩵 rinse and repeat! It's supposed to be a conversation with God and I use it when I'm in a tough spot. Thank you for your videos!

I watched this today and I was engaged listening and tuning into everything carefully. Then out of nowhere, I see my sister Alejandra on my TV bearing her testimony 😅!! I started to tear up because I was fully aware of all she said. I had to rewatch. So sweet. Thank you so much for adding her story and testimony! ❤❤❤

Thank you so much! I love the words of Christ. There is power in his name Jesus. I had a Christian friend who spoke of Grace as a Gift 💝 Given through Jesus on a daily basis. She looked for His Grace in the storm. There's much to learn from our fellow followers in Christ 💞

The discussion about the Name of Jesus Christ reminds me of a quote that I used in a talk last Sunday about His Grace - Camille N Fronk BYUH Devotional - "What Is So Amazing About Grace?" She explained that we often shy away from Grace not because we don't understand the doctrine, but because we don't know how to apply it in our lives. And pointed out that we tend to swing all the way one way or the other (excusing our misbehavior with God's love or thinking that we have to do it all ourselves without Jesus) which doesn't help us really seek His grace in our lives. So by extension, we hesitate to use His name too often as you pointed out tonight, which is sad because His name has great power to help us through anything. :)

Fantastic conversation. I too am somewhat reluctant to say the Savior’s name as well. I am not sure why but have often felt I don’t testify of Him to my family and friends who are non members enough. I feel like I need to but don’t know how. I think this lesson will help me to open my mouth. With practice I hope to overcome the awkward feeling.

You can do it! I recently read an article showing that since the year 2000, church leaders in General Conference have tripled the frequency with which they use the Savior's name. Let's follow their example! byustudies.byu.edu/article/whats-in-a-name/

Yes, you totally can be that voice that they need to hear and from someone they love and respect. For me I am probably the "least likely" person to go around testifying but maybe in spite of or just because the former, it hits home harder. People didn't think I would have come back around to the church, but I did and my journey away was so important that I wouldn't trade it for anything. It gave me my life back. I was a member my whole life, but just last year received my endowments.

Thank you John for this amazing podcast. I am quite worried about 2 situations and while listening to your experiences, paused your podcast and just prayed for help. I live in Ireland and I honestly needed help right now as next week I'll be working in the Preston Temple, UK, for 2 weeks and I didn't want these situations to be bothering me....The one problem was that I needed particular passport photos and in my head I saw the place I had to go to and where it was. They were not advertising passport photos and I asked an assistant if they did the photos and she got someone straight away to help me. I was quite surprised and so grateful to my Heavenly Father as I had been stressing for a while now. I had opened my scriptures to see the answers but it was while I was praying that I knew what to do. The same with the other situation. Just having the faith and knowing that you will get help is amazing. We just have to remember that we will be helped when we ask.

Thank you for each video and I am always learning more with each one. I have always wanted to share with anyone what church I belong to, and sort out misunderstandings so many people have. We might not have anything usable but Holy Bible, because they don't want to have anything else used. This has been the case lately. One person had a 1 of 3 choices in the way to "have gotten baptized " Sprinkle of water, fully under water and prayers Nothing at all. This is a old church. I brought up John The Baptist, Jesus cousin and the reason why he totally submerged people in the water, and Jesus went this way? Other people in Holy Bible did the same. I study morning and night. Some times eyes can't see good, even glasses, drops, but I remember the beliefs and teachings. Talking about his church called, his people called by his name... Beautiful lesson ❤📖🙏 15:55

This is a great lesson!! I have been using the name Jesus more often in my conversations with friends or family. Mostly in giving praise for things that He has done for me. At first I felt like others were giving me the “side eye” 👀 when I would say something, and initially it made me feel like I had done something wrong. As time has passed I don’t feel bothered, and I now have a confident sense in knowing what great things Jesus has done for me personally. On a side note, Bro. Hilton, I am trying to find the Google spread sheet (about praying) that you had shown in the video, but having a difficult time finding it. Can you point out where I can find that? Thank you!
