We are ELATED to hear Meka Reed's conversion story! Meka is the author of the inspiring book, My Dot Matters. She is one of the most kind, patient, and strong women we have ever met. This is a story you don't want to miss!
0:00-0:44- Introducing Meka
1:00 - Meka's story starts in 2018. She met the missionaries but keep giving them excuses as to why she couldn't meet with them. During this time, Meka ended up in the pysch ward for 2.5 months due to a suicide attempt and dealing with suicidal ideation. The missionaries were still persistent.
2:28 - The sister missionaries showed up to Meka's house. Her son answered the door and yelled for his mom who decided that it was time to give the missionaries a chance. Meka found herself sharing every detail of her life with the missionaries.
3:30 - The missionaries said they were led by God to Meka's house. Meka was skeptical. She asked them to prove that God sent them. The missionaries showed her a map and indicated that she was one of the five that they were supposed to visit that day.
5:00 - Meka still had reservations due to racial issues within the church and so forth. But after the lessons and the love shown by the missionaries, Meka started to seriously consider joining the church.
6:33 - Meka answers Lauren's question about why she chose to open up to the missionaries. She explains that she felt compelled due to the safe space to talk about her life and vulnerabilities.
8:03 - Meka talks about her mental health issues, including bipolar disease. In a period of mania, she began writing her story. She ended up with a 200 page story!
9:40 - God takes difficult things and makes them good!
10:58 - Meka talks about how she decided to be married. She was living with her boyfriend but had to either be married or move away from her boyfriend in order to be baptized.
12:40 - Meka and her now husband had to get divorced from their previous spouses in order to get married to one another.
13:30 - The missionaries did everything necessary to help Meka in her divorce!
15:30 - The courts allowed Meka to have a hearing to file her divorce. The judge explained that she didn't have the proper paperwork. Meka's mom spoke up and directed the judge to the proper documents.
17:02 - Meka was married and baptized on the same day!! She then describes her beautiful baptism day.
19:58 - Meka shares her thoughts and feelings about her baptism.

When teaching a couple in Costa Rica and they accepted baptism, they had to give up smoking and drinking, and they needed to get married. They were in their fifties or sixties. They chose to get married on their front porch and asked that we elders sit on either side of the person who officiated the marriage. I love them so much!

Meka, Love your story. Good for you and those those missionaries for not giving up. Just goes to show how helpful proper support can be for us. Heavenly Father will continue to bless your family with the help of fellow Saints standing by your side forever.

I feel ya on the mental health issue. I ended up in a psych ward about 4 years ago. It was a major pivot in my life. Now i work with others with mental health issues. One thing i appreciate about the church is their willingness to accept mental health issues and not blaming it on demons or past sins. Or blaming on parents for their sins are the reason for mental health issues.

Back in the '60s, I taught a family in Chile. When they were committed to baptism, we found that the parents weren't married to each other. The father was married to another woman, but couldn't get a divorce because Chile is a Catholic nation and divorce is nearly impossible. We baptized the children and the parents remained faithful, but unbaptized "members" of the church.

So in this mortal life they didn’t get the saving ordinances?

Meka's story resonates strongly with my testimony.I had four times tried to off myself prior to my baptism and conversion in August 2021.Two years and 5 months I am a YA Ward Rep for my ward, which is no mean feat.My diagnosis with complex post traumatic stress disorder diagnosis made me realise that I needed to come back home to church and I found that home in this church. The missionaries Elder Lewis and Elder Childers serving in Scotland at the time said my conversion was a 'special case' and they were right.I am glad I abandoned Catholicism when it no longer benefitted me and found peace elsewhere.

Some of the greatest memories of my mission involved helping people get married. Never helped anyone get divorced but I recall similar situations where marriage to another was a roadblock to marrying and getting baptized. Interestingly, I don't find it unusual in the least that the missionaries helped. I can just hear President Nelson saying "Need to get divorced from a long estranged spouse? Ask the missionaries! They can help you!" (October 2012)

For people who don't understand, one of the commandments we follow is the Law of Chastity. That means no cohabitation. In order for someone to be baptized, they need to get married or move out. Also, divorce can be necessary since it's good to have their consent. But if you are no longer together, but haven't officially divorced, it's best to formalize it. It's not "life advice" missionaries give out, we just want to make sure someone is baptized honestly without stepping on anyone's toes.

Are missionaries permitted to get this involved in an investigator’s divorce? Seems like an overstep.🤔

The Mission President not missionaries sort that out. And we dont baptize active adulterers. Duh. Everyone has get their act together before baptism whatever that might be. Christ comes first.

@@AxelQC They do get training so not straight out of high school. And they never interview anyone for baptism. So a bit of exaggeration for clicks going on

They spend 6 weeks in the MTC and never learn anything but memorizing proselytism lessons and learning sales techniques. They no nothing about pastoral care and less about marriage counseling. @@suem6004

I don't know. Some of the most profound statements I've ever heard come out of the mouths of babes. Perhaps a young person can be moved by the spirit to deliver an appropriate message just like anyone else can.
