Fallout 3 is responsible for bringing the Fallout series into the mainstream. But time makes fools of us all and Fallout 3 is no different. I Have a Love-Hate Relationship with Fallout 3.

Introducing the Radio in Fallout 3 was brilliant and really added to atmosphere/fun gameplay.
@redzeppelin6

I like music from that era so I do enjoy it a lot. I have a few mods in NV to add more music from the 40s-60s since I enjoy it, but I think it also has the downside to imply people in 2077 only liked music from the mid 20th century and no new music was made after 1960. We know Elvis exists so we know Rock n' Roll exists in some form even if we never hear it. 117 years and no new music? I understand the intro of 1 and 2 used old music, but no radio indicated no context for what music was around. They only use old songs in the trailer intros to use the lyrics of those songs to set the mood for the world. The trailer for 3 does that well too. I might not like Fallout 3 very much, but that E3 trailer was good at getting the point across. It made me want to play the game.
@JayRoboFox

@@redzeppelin6 could be because alot of the music holotapes got destroyed during the war, or alot of the newer music got played alot more than the older ones.... and after being played for so long those tapes died, leaving the oldest ones. Fallout 76 has "newer" music and some rock n roll and thats just 20 odd years after the bombs fell.

What technical or the writing
@drekbleh7081
@drekbleh7081 3 года назад
@@roadmaster9777 Actually. Both! In Far harbor there are checks on the story on how many side quests you've done. Stopping a town from forming a angry mob requires they know who you are from your actions. No speech checks can stop them. This is believable because who would ever listen to a stranger who doesn't understand their woes? Maybe my standards were low but there's also a theme of free will vs peace. You can only choose one. To me Bethesda took humility to heart and actually tried to have more complex writing.

@@drekbleh7081 To me, Bethesda's Fallout story is more.... nuanced/subtle, I mean NV theme were obvious, obviously good, now that I think about it, I don't do a lot of thinking when choosing my factions, it's either NCR or Yes-Man (I don't bother to do other factions quests), while my first time playing Fo4 I stopped and thinking a lot and avoiding the main quest where you finally decided who you're going to side with and do other side quests and exploring while thinking...

@damkylan3
@damkylan3 3 года назад
@@IMBREISGAU You know why you think it's more "subtle"? Because Bethesda's factions don't have any real motivations or interesting justifications. They're all vague, barely have any real plans for the future, and most importantly, there is very little in the way of figuring out the tradeoffs between their good points and their bad points, because the writers couldn't think of any. So that leaves you to imagine their motivations for them. Whereas New Vegas outlines *everything* you need to know about each faction, both their good and bad points. The Legion is obviously regressive, brutal, and will most likely fall apart once Caesar is dead, but they also pacified the areas they conquer which were even worse before the Legion showed up and guard their territories better than NCR. The NCR believes in old world values and are the best chance to return life back to how it was pre-war, but they're also bogged down in bureaucracy and corruption that it takes them years to get anything done, and their disorganization causes problems like the Powder Gangers and the massacre of Camp Guardian. Yes Man causes anarchy to spread, and while you can contain it in New Vegas, the future of the rest of the wasteland is left uncertain. Mr. House will accelerate humanity's progression faster than anyone else and has a plan in place to do so, but he's also a dictator himself, and is not above wiping out anyone he just doesn't care for, like the Brotherhood. That's what actual nuance is. If you don't think about the factions you choose, that's fine, but the game expects you to do so by detailing some of the good they do and all the ways they can fuck things up.

I love Fo3's aesthetic, atmosphere, and environment. The capital wastland feels like the desolate, and hostile wasteland I would have imagined DC would become. I love how it's a different experience every time you play with it's random encounters. New Vegas feels like a curated experience, but the way the game was written makes me wish for the next game to be a hibrid between the two.

Weirdly enough, I find F3 feels more cultivated, but more in a Minecraft sort of way. NV's setting feels like it would go on without you if you left, F3's feels like a playground made for you. As for NV not having random enemy spawns, that was apparently a deliberate choice, to build the world in a more believable way where creatures have their own nests, habitats, etc. instead of just randomly being everywhere and scaling with your level. I think they could've done more with random spawns/encounters though, even if the "deathclaws randomly popping up halfway across the map from the nearest deathclaw habitat because reasons" approach wouldn't have made much sense.

@@infinityhand6569 The exploration bit is true. Obsidian's lack of experience with open world games shows with New Vegas. Almost every area in FO3 has something worth seeing at least once per playthrough, be it a unique weapon, armor, misc item, unmarked quest etc. In New Vegas, areas that don't involve questing are hardly worth going to at all. New Vegas also utilized a linear spawning system which meant the game would never really surprise you, whereas FO3 utilized a randomized spawning system based on your level which meant, besides a few safe havens, any area in the game could have deathclaws and yao guais spawning out of nowhere which meant you always had to mindful of where you were going. It wasn't terribly lore-friendly (why would someone build a whole ass fancy tower in the middle of nowhere where some giant radiation bears could show up?), but it was more interesting to explore. Additionally it was a little better balanced when it came to weapon progression (in particular, the change to pure DT was terrible due to the fact that they failed to successfully account for this in the weapon stats, and thus automatic weapons are nearly obsolete and with a complete ass backwards balancing, with the unique minigun being able to get outshined by a fucking 9mm SMG against high DT targets). New Vegas shines off the basis of its customization, dialogue and intricate choice systems as well as the variety of viable builds, and it's overall superior, but as a sandbox it's very obvious FO3 was made by a team with more experience in that field. All of that said though, New Vegas effectively replaced FO3 in the modding community since FO3 mods more or less stopped after NV and NV still regularly gets mods to this day, so most of the issues I mentioned can be fixed by simply modding, whereas most of FO3's weaknesses cannot be fixed by mods.

Well one thing Bethesda did try to do with Fallout 4 was bringing back some of the faction gameplay from New Vegas and Fallout 2. Even if it was somewhat lackluster and unsubtle. I think the problem with the factions in 4 was how unmemorable the factions were, I mean hell in New Vegas each faction had different aims and goals as to why they want to control the Mojave and even the Legion which were made out to be the "Bad guys" still present a good argument for their existence and why they use the methods they do, atleast to me the dialogue and conversation with Caesar was always one of the highlights of the game despite me never actually aligning with the legion. I think bethesda does a good job at laying solid ground works for their games in terms of gameplay and features (Power armour was absolutely the highlight of 4 despite me still wishing they didn't give it to you 10 minutes into the start of the game.)

'You really feel the dread of the apocalypse, whereas in Vegas you're a mailman strolling the desert killing men with skirts' This just feels like a disengious jab at NV. Fallout 3 *feels* like a desolate wasteland, until, you realize, Megaton makes no sense, the world thematically is illogical. It's a poorly shandified game in many aspects, whereas in NV at least the guys in skirts actually have reasons why they wear skirts, they are visually distinct and more so in their behavior, at least you have agency in the story rather than being in the shadow of the real main character(James). I love Fallout 3, and it's atmosphere, I love the soundtrack, I love how every moment it reminds you just how fucked the world is, it's dreary, bleak, stoic, much like the first 2 games in many aspects, but it doesn't make sense that it's still that bad after 2 centuries. NV of course, thinks about these things, societies, cities, et cetera. all flourish while still being a careful reminder about the folly of nuclear war, and calling attention to the quote, 'War, war never changes.' While Fallout 3 does nothing with it. Listen, 3 is a great game, but for some reason 3 fans always discuss NV in bad faith whenever they bring up why 3 is good. Even the most popular argument video for Fallout 3 by MATN, DOES IT THE ENTIRE VIDEO. I don't know, just seems like NV was brought up in bad faith. Sorry for the essay.

I played the vanilla story, and I personally like it. And surprisingly I don't mind the vanilla ending. I did got the GOTY edition and made it enjoyable with the DLC expansions. They could have expanded more with places like The Pitt and Point Lookout. Those places had unique factions and enemies, even if they are shallow looking back. Of course this was before Fallout 4 release. I did got New Vegas at first, though if you found any comments, it was a rough love experience. The freezes and crashes made me stop and return the game. Of course, I did got back to New Vegas and tried it again and appreciated. I dont mind both of them. I play both of them. But I would have like it if Fallout 3 had one thing like in New Vegas that none of the DLCs affect the vanilla game. At least until certain triggers happen. And just imagine if part of the Enclave quest line involved getting into the Citadel and uploading a compressed copy of President Eden into Liberty Prime. Game over lol. i got into fallout through 3, it looked cool and unique and vats was a new and unique thing i didn't see in other games. a bit after that i tried playing the first two games but couldn't figure them out, still need to give them another try. then new vegas released, and it slowly but gradually became my favourite fallout game. that might change if/when i decide to give the first two another go.

Honestly Mantis, 3 was my first Fallout, but seeing Interplay’s Fallout 1 and 2, I realized how far ahead of the times they were for RPG’s when it came to how impactful your choices could shape the story. I will say though that after playing all the games, except for the first two... I hope they get remakes, but I personally am willing to give Bethesda a pass for Fallout 3 since it was there first one, after the way Obsidian brought what made Fallout from the 2D Era to the 3D Era into something amazing with New Vegas, Bethesda had no excuse at that point imo, because New Vegas pretty much set the standard for what Bethesda needed to do for Fallout as a series.

tbh, the closest post fallout 2 fallouts came to being actual fallout is the lonesome road dlc. new vegas was still missing some epic sceneries like the graveyard or necropolis, and the divide was very close to those. there is really not many locations in any 3+ fallouts that stand out with a landmark. granted, isometric view is hard to beat when displaying epic sceneries and landmarks, but they proved it's almost possible. we'll see how f4nv turns out.

The faction problem is ONE of the things i’ll give 76 credit for. It tried to introduce new “large” factions (responders, free state), which also fits good into the lore. However, still very sad with what little they actually did with them, due to the limitations of having no npcs. (Also, kinda weird how they shoehorned the BoS and super mutants into the game)

fallout 3 is my favorite game new vegas is a close second but 3 just looks and plays better like the combat feels more fluid and the world made for looks so good contrast to new vegas which combat felt sluggish despite having the same mechanics and stuff and the world just looks so ugly compared to 3 also the claim that 3s writing is bad is bullshit but only for the side quests the main quest started off pretty good but once you found your dad that's when it took a nose dive
@damkylan3
@damkylan3 3 года назад
No, pretty much all of 3's writing is just bad from the beginning. The overseer's plot to kill you is forced and idiotic, the way the game handles morality right from the start is stupid, the entire concept of Megaton is moronic, the central choice of Megaton is one of the stupidest choices in gaming, and the entire plot is garbage, what with the fundamental contradiction of focusing on needing water for the wasteland to survive but then also having thriving communities within the wasteland with a bunch of people who are somehow not dying of radiation sickness. And that's just scratching the surface. The side quests are a mixed bag. Some of them are okay, like the Replicated Man and the Oasis quests, and some of them are retarded, like The Family one, and anything involving Little Lamplight, and anything revolving around the Slavers. On their own, the latter two don't seem that stupid until you actually look deeper into the worldbuilding of the game and realize it's godawful. Same goes for the nonsensical Talon Company.

New vegas combat system are improved from Fallout 3 dude, NV have different ammo type (Armor piercing bullets, bean bag, slug, tazer bullets, a lot more), now you can aim, and the Vats doesnt make you outright invulnerable. Also weapon mods, that is way more improved on NV. NV combat system is not the best out of the whole franchise, but it sure is very different with FO 3 and improved. A lot of claim regarding FO 3 story being bad was due to the plot holes / questionable motives of each faction.

I agreed. Fallout 3 is a wasted potential. The huge war against the super mutants, the vault 87 and the fight in the DC area between mutants, talon and BoS was more interesting than the water purification. Why they are there? What is so important in DC? FO3 should let you explode vault 87 to stop the mutants. I remember that in broken steel there's a non marked quest to bring blood samples from super mutants to BoS. They wanted to make some kind of poison. Also the enclave could have been the "good guys", there's many npcs that like enclave and Autumn wanted to secure the purifier for the people.

Before I state my opinion I want to make one thing very clear. I'm not an original fan of the Fallout games, I have played 1 and 2 but have not beaten them. I do have a massive amount of respect for them and have looked into the story and lore of both games. I started the series with Fallout 3. I ended up loving it have played it for a long time. Eventually I played New Vegas but since I didn't have a PC at the time I had to deal with the dreaded PS3 New Vegas, which was absolute suffering. I didn't get to experience just how good New Vegas and classic Fallout was. I played Fallout 3 more and more until I knew most of the lore surrounding it. It was at this time that I ended up looking more into the lore of the other games to prepare me for the upcoming 4th game, Fallout 4. I was hyped for the game, hoping it would be as good as 3. When it came out I loved it, thought it was amazing. Flash forward a couple years, and I finally have a PC which meant I could now finally play a good version of New Vegas. It was also at this time I opened up to some comments and criticism of the Bethesda games. I originally thought it was just a bunch of assholes but came to understand and really feel for the classic fans of the series. The criticism came out of a love for the series and I really started to listen to them. Some time after, 76 was revealed and I was intrigued but also not really optimistic about it. I really started to notice the severe differences between the overall writing and creativity of Bethesda and Interplay/Obsidian. I came to the conclusion that I like Fallout 3&4 but cannot in good faith say they are better or as good as 1, 2, and New Vegas. I make this long comment to say that my biggest issue with the series now, having looked at the past and the path it took, is the overall tone. The game's tone is completely gone, if you look at Fallout 1 and 2 and compare them to 76, it doesn't even feel the same game series. This is an issue that was slowly showing itself the longer Bethesda continued to make Fallout games. A misunderstanding of the lore and even more, a complete thievery of the series. If you look at Fallout 3, past the writing and some gameplay issues, you notice that the game is still pretty bleak, it has a lot of disturbing, dark elements and while different, it still feels similar to the original game's tone. It still feels like a lawless, bleak wasteland. A lot of things in the game also paid homage to the classics. One example is combat armor. While combat armor is different it feels like a slight tweak of the original armor, like Bethesda wanted to change some elements of the game but still respect the classics. Fallout 4 changed this, while it still has dark elements and bleak moments, overall it feels as if it's a much less dark game. The world, while destroyed doesn't really feel like a wasteland, there are elements there but it felt as if Bethesda was changing the game to less of a dark survival RPG, and more of a goofy sandbox action adventure. The aforementioned combat armor, now looks nothing like 3 or the originals design. They started HARDCORE retconning things, changing elements of the games to fit THEIR perception of what the series is. That being said, I do still think the tone of the series wasn't completely lost but the changing of the series was quickly exacerbated. The release of 76 was the final nail in the coffin. The "wasteland" 25 years after the bombs fell is green, trees and plants still grow, it's colourful, it doesn't feel like the wasteland. Even worse, is the overall tone of the series is now fully dead. The game is a fucking joke, a silly mmo with crazy weapons and kooky areas. Gone are the dark days of the bleak nature of humanity's fall, the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust and the consequences that resulted in this lawless, fucked up world. The showing of the horrors of war, the evil of mankind, and the terrifying power of nuclear technology, presenting what happens when humanity goes too far, and how war and conflict are constant in our species. The feeling of surviving in hell, an unforgiving wasteland that kills the weak and destroys the innocent. Now, we have a bunch of people in silly outfits blowing up still active nukes just for fun, you know, the antithesis to what the series stood for in the first fucking place. Even further retconning the original lore, turning the game from a creation by another company that they wanted to respect and continue faithfully, into a game THEY have created, a series THEY own, one that they can now do whatever the fuck they want to, regardless if it's a complete disrespect to what the series is supposed to be. Bethesda have fully misunderstood why the game was loved in the first place... and they don't care, because "Fallout" is THEIR series now, THEIR cash cow that they can milk for as long as they want, not caring if the tone of the games is gone and if it even feels like the same series. Blanking out desperate cries by fans who love the games and want to see them return to why they were loved. It's a brand now... no longer a creation by a small team to create a world and lore they love and respect, one that teaches us that "War never changes", but now a stolen and bastardised art and world by a massive company that only cares about making money, and being mainstream. A souless husk of a once great series now artificially continuing it's painful existence, robbed of everything it stood for but forced to continue on. I apologize for this comment being this long but I really wanted to state what I truly think about this game series and where it is now, I still love 3 & 4 but I can't just pretend this isn't what has happened to this once beloved series.

Personally I love 3 just as much as I did when I first played it, even after playing NV. It was and still is one of if not my favorite Fallout game. 4 (and NV) doesn’t ruin 3 at all, if anything due to 4’s flaws it shows how good 3 really it is. 3 has better writing than some give it credit for. It’s main story while not always perfect, it’s still good. 4’s (and NV’s) main story doesn’t ruin 3’s, again it shows how better 3’s is due to 4’s flaws. At the very least it’s not bad. NV’s main story is lacking a more emotional/personal side, that’s something that side quests and DLC would do better, but I think the main quest could have used it too. 3’s world was great and the stuff in the game isn’t shoehorned in, imo. As they are explained. I understand why some don’t like them, but I didn’t mind. 3 isn’t shallow, it has a lot to love about it. Not everything has to be just like NV. Plus NV wouldn’t exist without 3. Imo 3 is just as great as 1, 2, and NV and it deserves more of the love it used to get. It feels like I can’t talk about it to some fans with getting hated on. Which sucks because I love the game so much.

I think Fallout 3 was a great game for what it was. It was my introduction to the series. I understand where Bethesda fell short but to some extent it can be excused considering the undertaking of bringing an old IP into a new technological paradigm. New Vegas obviously blew Fallout 3 away and makes it hard to go back to, but I believe if Fallout 4 had followed up on the success of New Vegas by learning from how that game worked, Fallout 3 would be remembered more fondly as a stepping stone for bringing Fallout into the mainstream again. Because of the way Fallout 4 doubled down on Bethesda's misplaced priorities, I think the negatives of Fallout 3 are that much more obvious because they've been beaten into our heads by the time we've played through 4. Also, does anybody else think Fallout 4 settlements made Fallout 3's story irrelevant? Multiple people had to die to make a water filtration system in Fallout 3, but in Fallout 4 the sole survivor just comes out of the vault able to make water filtration with just some concrete, gears and screws? You can turn Sanctuary into a water baron settlement without ever leaving it. Just seems an odd choice after spending a whole gaming tying such huge consequences to the ability to source clean water.
