Sewist who crafts here: I've broken tons of needles. The thread goes through the eye so when the needle breaks that end gets trapped in the piece you're sewing. No eye danger from that. Also- press things! Press your hems before you pin and sew them, your seams after you sew them, your template pieces before you cut.... It will make life way easier.

Yes, I was going to say that, the only time I've broken a needle was a jeans needle, on my Brother GS2510, and I was trying to sew through 8 layers of thick denim 😂 I had to switch to navy blue canvas for that part of that project... but the tip stayed in the denim lol

Also a sewist here! I used to work for a leather goods company and had so many needles snap on me. And while this is mostly true, on more than one occasion, the thread also broke and the needle tip went flying. I don’t think this is something you need to worry about unless you’re working on heavy machines with heavy material, but I still squint when I sew anything thick as a reflex 😅

Probably because needles can break in 3 pieces, just like mine did. I found needle tip with thread, head of needle attached to machine and flying middle part of needle. @@coreystyx8547

Next time you go to the fabric store buy a couple of seam rippers. Works much better then scissors!

I know I couldn’t find ours lol! BUT I did switch to a craft knife and that went soooo fast. Wish I got shots of it. Even better than a seam ripper IMO

@@TheSorryGirls The advantage of a seam ripper over a craft knife is the safety features in a seam ripper that (mostly) keep you from slicing into your fabric as you rip out seams. You're relying solely on the steadiness of your hand when you use a craft knife. I have sliced fabric even with my seam ripper a few times in 25 years of sewing, so I would be very wary about using a knife, as it can ruin a project in a second or two that you've spent many hours and much money on!

@@staceyschmidt3149, totally get where you're coming from, especially if it's something you're comfortable using. I learned to use a single edged razor in a tailor shop over 40 years ago, which takes a toll on your finger grip. I've been using the Stanley snap blade utility knife only and altering bridal and evening wear for over 35 years. It makes all the prep work do much faster....for me. I think my hands would have given out long ago using a seam ripper. I will say I'm amazed how deft some people are when using the seam ripper. 😊

the end result looks great, just as a tip for the future though, it’s much easier to get the piping sewn in evenly if you do it one layer at a time. Instead of sandwiching the piping between the two layers of fabric and having to make sure it doesn’t shift, sew the piping to the side fabric, and then the side fabric to the top.

But if the needle breaks (got more experience of that than I care to admit 😅) it usually does so in half. The bottom part stays attached to the thread and the top to the machine! 💁🏼‍♀️

imo it's not lazy to not upholster the inside of the ottoman, it makes perfect sense if you're using it to store shoes, plus you put a nice finish on the inside anyway! Last year I reupholstered the chair and bench from my kitchen dining nook, as well as the pull-out part of my sofa. All of those were basically just rectangles so it was super beginner-friendly - I had never done it before and only seen some RU-vid vids. I even ended up replacing the filling of the kitchen chair and bench because the old material inside hat started falling apart. After some trial and error, and lots of procrastinating lol, the projects came out amazing.

First, a trick for the pillow is to buy the pillow form one size bigger (16 inch pillow - 20 inch form). It really fills the pillow casing and makes it look more expensive. Next - bias piping strips don’t waste as much fabric as you think…RU-vid has videos for that. Or you can just cut crosswise strips of your fabric. Lengthwise strips have no stretch or give, but crosswise strips do. When I was fresh out of college and newly married, we took a course in reupholstering furniture. They taught us to do just what you did - take it apart carefully, and use your pieces as patterns for the new fabric. We had to take notes about the construction as we went, because in 1976 there were no cell phone cameras or iPads🙄. Your project turned out nice, but there has to be a way to fit more shoes in there - either another level, or dividers so the shoes stand on end. There’s wasted space. I think some chunky feet - half the height of the originals - would also look nice.

Tip: sew piping to the straight-edge piece, THEN sew to the round piece. Much easier on the hands! Love the results you achieved with both projects.

Upholstery is such hard work, and so satisfying. I understand why it is so expensive to have it done [time], but it lasts so long and I get to be happy with it every time I see it. [I do projects with canvas so I can prime and paint them the exact colour I want-- and repeat that if I change my mind.]

Wait. Do you paint the canvas for furniture?! Is this a thing?! Also, where do you source your canvas? I’ve tried using the heaviest-duty painters’ cloth I can find, but it doesn’t hold up. I love Sunbrella fabric, but dang, it’s expensive.

4:20 this is why I always sew with glasses. I did have a needle break once and it bounced off my glasses. Though I predominantly wear contacts, I will change into my glasses while sewing.

Wow Kelsey! The pillow and ottoman look fantastic! I’m blown away by your upholstery job. It looks so good. I always worry about sewing my fingers or thumb! When I was younger, a friend of the family was a seamstress and she accidentally sewed through her thumb! I’ve never forgotten that, I’m 62 and I think I was 6 or 7 when it happened. I am sewing for a living and yah that happens, but since the needle is mostly very sharp it’ll just go straight through and not make a huge injury. Happened to me 3 times already but healed up in like 2 to 4 days;)

A trick for thick sewing, for future reference since it worked perfectly this time! If you're seeing something massive on your machine, you can get a small toothpick or metal nail file, anything thin and flat, and hold the back of the pressure foot up while starting the process/ going over a huge bump 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I use this when I gather multiple layers of fabric and put them together, like thick curtains or super puffy dresses

I wish id known about the upholstery staple remover a couple weeks ago. I recovered 6 chair cushions for my friend’s mom and I swear whoever made the chairs put 90% of their budget into the staples. There were so many staples that I completely filled a sandwich baggie.

The thing with piping is that you can just create faux piping by sewing the rope onto the side panels of fabric. It’s way easier and uses less fabric than making your own piping but the colour will match exactly. I’m refurbishing an old sofa myself at the moment and that’s how it was done originally.

grea! Love the TSG !! Tip - if you attach the pins at 90 degrees from how you placed them, then you can just sew over them and when you're done you can easily remove them

I use large shirts that I thrift to make throw pillow covers. I cut the size that I need with the front buttons to be the closure. Quick and easy!

I cannot believe that you recovered, I mean actually reupholstered that ottoman so absolutely beautifully AND professionally!! That was NO typical DIY project!! I bow to you, OH “CLEVER ONE!” I would not have even thought of doing that myself-and I very likely would have made an awful mess of it had I even tried!!!! I'm sorry 2 years old so I learned sewing in 7th grade. I love sewing I have sewn all my life what I don't understand you and lone Fox, when you pin something you pin it along the fabric. You're supposed to pin it sideways and the sewing machine needle just goes over the pin , and you don't have to unpin it until you've gone over that spot. Or you can just unpin it when you're totally done. Did that make sense cuz what you do makes no sense to me?

Yes, I am PROUD! Cushion cover for the win. Use the zipper foot to get as close as possible. (Oh yay! You found it later.) You spent less to completely do this ottoman than the tax alone that they were going to charge you. Great job.

Upholstery is so expensive. I bought fabric and redid my fairly simple Joybird couch and I think it turned out well. It was a labor of love for sure but I did it all for a few hundred dollars. Girl you need a proper seam ripper! I love how it turned out.

I once sewed through my finger - I didn't hit a nerve, thank God! I was sewing white fabric at the time and was more concerned about getting blood on the fabric.

cutting fabric on the bias does not have to create any waste at all. There are smart ways of doing it with zero waste actually. Look up “how to make continuous bias binding. Also the piping you buy at the store isn’t always necessarily made with true bias tape.

Kelsey, a tip for your hub caps, use two zip ties and zip tie your hub caps. Just be sure to keep a pair of scissors that stay in your car in case you ever need to take your hub caps off. It just makes it a little harder for someone to take them off.

So thrilled to see you tackle such a daunting reupholstering job. I’ve sewn for years and I’d be afraid to try that. It looks amazing and you did an awesome job. I wanted to share a couple of tips and thoughts that may be helpful for future sewing. One is the needle in the eye comment. That is a very real thing and it’s smart to consider. Readers (reading glasses) with a low strength level (if you don’t need much) might work. You’d have to check but I think they might work. If not, safety glasses would be fine. I’ve never had a needle come off like that but have had a pin that I missed removing, snap in two. A little scary. The next is a seam ripper for when you have to open a seam like you did with the old fabric. They sell these in any craft/sewing/fabric store. A tiny one will work but a little bigger one, about 6-8” is easier on the hands. Love the pillow too.

I have a small hassock I bought at a consignment store decades ago. It's mostly wood but has a red velvet rectangular top that is completely worn through. After watching this, I think I'll give reupholstering it a try. It should be far far easier than what you did!

I have snapped so many needles. Never had it become a projectile. but like wear safety glasses if your worried. for envelope pillows I usually do the two back covers as 2/3 length of the front. there are techniques to maximise cutting fabric on the bias that ive used for making bias tape.

Well done! Projects look great. If the team will be doing more sewing, upholstery etc you may want to invest in a ‘seam ripper’ (hook like tool that’rips’ through seams easily without damaging fabric) and a ‘walking foot’ for your sewing machine that easily moves thick fabrics under the needle❤️✨

Thank you!❤🎉 I think the bottom line is you saved money, learned more skills, and are happy with the results. I've upholstered, made slipcovers, and slipholstery (slipcover that's so tight it looks like upholstery). The price they quoted seems fair with the amount of time it takes to deconstruct and reconstruct the piece, especially if it included fabric from their suppliers, and if they were qouting on upholstering the inside. ❤

I usually do french seam on these type of pillow cases, but I think it must be so difficult to sew this rug material but u did it so well!! Looks amazing 😍 Hi from Czech Republic 🇨🇿 love u❤
