He lost $15,000 gambling, gone way into debt, and he's not an addict? Really? This is the problem when you combine accounts. In one night in a casino, this guy could waste all of his money, and all of her money. That's not fair to her. It's better if she keeps her accounts separate. It's not her problem, this guy can't be trusted.

Dude, I don't even trust you. Gambling habits are hard to break. When you pay off all your debts and have a surplus amount of money in your bank accounts, then you should talk to your wife about combining incomes.

He starts with his gambling but then turns it to her previous relationship and how she has issues as to why she doesn’t want to combine money. Nah sir...you gambled away $15K? She doesn’t trust you and I wouldn’t either after 1.5 years.

People don't have to combine finances, if they don't want to. Separate finances can keep the peace for a lot of couples.

We have a couple relatives with this problem. They cannot be trusted at all. One is my MiL and she will lie all day long to get money for her addiction. We almost were not able to have children because of the amount she took from us. We were young and naive. I had never been around someone with an addiction. We believed her lies for way too long. It took six years of marriage before we figured it out.

I quit gambling. It sucks being an addict. I have almost all my debts gone and savings. Proud to no longer be an addict! I had 5k in card debt (tho $700 was a laptop. I dunno how much was interest so I say 4k of it was addiction) and I regret blowing 2k I had on gambling even after I was working to fix the mess because I wasn't sure i wanted to quit at first. I can tell when someone is serious about no longer being an addict because I had to quit personally due to the damage it was doing to my life financially. I don't think he sounds remorseful or angry like I am about it.

The first thing my soon to be ex-husband wanted me to do was get a joint account & put his name on the truck & trailer that I bought with money I got from selling my home. He had no vehicle or home; due to years of gambling. I don't even trust the caller.

The underlying assumption of this call is that they should combine accounts; the only issues are how, when and where. But I haven't heard any compelling reasons why they should do so. Perhaps it is more convenient, perhaps it is easier to manage, perhaps it signals trust between partners, but these are not compelling reasons, they are "nice to have." But when circumstances such as gambling or compulsive overspending are operative, that overrules the vague and intangible benefits. If I were the wife I would say "No, do not combine finances, not for 10 years, maybe not ever." Even if the probability of future gambling debt is low, the wife needs to protect herself. If the husband is extremely unhappy with this, then it may be time to go their separate ways.

Gambling is killer. My grandmother dropped over $30,000 a year in a casino while my grandfather was only making approx 70k a year. She gambled and he got a new computer and a new truck every few years. That was his life. 70k a year to only have a computer and a truck for enjoyment. That's sad. He died in his 60s and she is in her 80s now gambling her social security she gets mostly from his finances. Gambling is nasty stuff for most people. Thousands in a casino for no return.

2inchfromtheground I am hoping that the owners of the casinos every single one of them has to feel the way that gamblers do when they lose everything . The people who work there wow I cannot even imagine working in a place like this seeing depressed people going home with basically nothing left in their wallet that is depressing and very cruel to work in a place like this

Yup. Grandfather did this. He gambled everything then stopped eating. He died and that’s when their kids found out there was no money. Big not for children the grandma would have been destitute. He wasted everything. Hundreds of thousands of dollars and she had no idea because he took care of the finances

Dave is flat wrong on this one. I usually don’t disagree with him, but this honestly sucks to listen to him tell him he’s probably not an addict, only the guy can decide that and telling him he isn’t only enabled him. Ugh, what a shame, hopefully this guy gets help and goes to GA.

Prove her wrong. start your day with happy thoughts and honesty. Trust her on your financies first while you start from changing to be better person .last you can't change without prayers. pray for everything ,safety ,food, savings, health, control your hand to spending WANTS, spend NEED first...prayers is the way no one else ,so don't stop on PRAY EVERY SINGLE DAY ,BE THANKFUL TO GOD

As soon as Dave asked the 'Are you an addict' and the stuttering & stumbling started -- he's gambling. 18 months with no gambling, I wouldn't give him access to a teaspoon. Yet. But I would ensure that, if he were my dude, we'd be sitting together, budgeting, and knowing where every penny is. If he's with it, AND allows his credit report to be pulled every 6 months, then yeah. I'd do a partial joint account.

"And this 2 year old has done it" ...egads, what a burden to put on a kid. Poor thing will need counselling, because by that statement, if their marriage fails, the kid is gonna feel it's his/her fault because it'll have been told "You saved us". Yikes.

Anyone that has gambled to a point that impacts he's life, relationships, and end up in debt is most likely an addict and can relapse. Highly encourage him to call gamblers hotline to speak to a counselor. Relapse prevention!

I do not agree with Dave on this one. If the wife is not taking his word for it, why is Dave? It's very dangerous to armchair tell someone they are not addicted to something, especially when they did it to the point of causing harm to their family. In fact, symptoms of gambling addiction (of which you only need a small number to be diagnosed) include gambling despite consequences and financial hardships caused by gambling. Tell him to talk to a professional.
