I’m a cosmetology student and I’m getting ready to do my first job at the funeral home I’ve been offered a job at when I graduate. Unfortunately it is my own aunt. She passed unexpectedly last week and she had just made an appointment with me to have her hair done. I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your pure honesty and advice. It has truly helped me prepare myself for this. Thank you again, so much.

Hello Emmy, I am ever so grateful that I could help you. Sending my love and condolences to you and your family. It sometimes is unfortunate by way of how we were introduced into the industry but that just means we are in our purpose. Not too many explain details in regards to the funeral home and working in one.

You made this video very fun, realistic, honest and relatable. I have a relative who was hired to drive a hearse in the early 90's: they made him get three suits in different colors. He was cool with the gig, until he had to go to the funeral home one night...............alone! He went in the prop room, the body was sitting up (either from gas trapped inside or being positioned for the casket), and he quit soon after. He never saw any embalming, but from other graphic videos I've watched on here, the trocar process is what seems to traumatize most people who are not in the industry. For me, I already have my burial plan in place and I want direct cremation. I know that many people need the final viewing as closure, but I don't like the whole embalming process and then rotting in the ground: that's money wasted to me. But I truly appreciate what you do, and how you take time to explain the process to families and people interested in the industry. We must all pass this way.

I think that the most important thing to viewers and potential Mortuary Science students is that they hear the absolute Truth from someone who is already in the industry. Honestly speaking, “some” make it sound so easy and simple when in all reality, this is the reality of death. It’s smart thinking and dedication which keeps those who are in it humble and dedicated to their line of work! We appreciate you sis! Keep the videos coming and continue to enlighten us.

I just started going to school for Estetics & this is an avenue I am considering upon graduation for my town. When my father died it was under traumatic circumstances & I don't think the funeral home knew or were equipped to handle any physical traumas. We were told when planning the funeral he would look like he did in life. Oh they lied to us! You could see the facial bruises, his face was sunken in, he had a hole on the side of his ear, there was also many other issues that I don't care to go into publicly (but I am sure you get my point) In Louisiana where I live I am sure NOLA has mortuary artists, because it is a bigger metro city. I don't think Lafayette does, sadly. Thank you for posting this video & you didn't scare me you just reassured me that there is an absolute need for dedicated & compassionate people like us in the industry. Thank you for all that you do! Virtual Hugs!!!!!!

I knew coming up, that the undertaking profession wasn't for me. I'm very empathetic, emotional and at 61, I still cry very easily & it's scary. I can't lie. I fear dying, and thatz the truth. I think this profession would suit me well. I’m nervous that I may not be talented enough yet but I’ve been a cosmetologist for 7 years... Has there ever been a situation where you were really unsure if you could make them look presentable for viewing? And if that happens how do you handle it? Does the embalmer make the decision of who can and can’t be made up for viewing or is that the cosmetologists position? Thank you for all you do 💙

@@MsMortuary I had a friend wondering why/how womens' mortuary makeup and hairstyling makes their funerals so much more expensive. I told them that given how different mortuary makeup is, and having to be certified to work with corpses, and how different it must be to style hair on a deceased head... that it's probably wildly undercharging for a very specialized skill.

I'm going to be working on my grandmother's hair in a few days. Her viewing will be a week since she passed. I am a licensed hairdresser, but I've never worked on the deceased. She wasn't really one to wear makeup either, so I'm just wondering if it would still be needed & could I use regular foundation if needed? I was also thinking to use a light tinted lip color or lipstick.
@MsMortuary
@MsMortuary Год назад
Sending my condolences 💐. She may need a minimal coverage but you may not have to apply makeup of her complexion hasn’t changed. The mortuary makeup can be applied lightly to avoid a heavy makeup look. Some professionals use a tinted red dye to bring color back to their skin that may be all she needs. I would take some ideal lip colors with you just to what fits best for you just in case the Funeral Home doesn’t have the color you need. I hope this helps dm me on instagram if you have any questions when the time comes.

If her hair is naturally curly, it should. If you use curl products test a small area to check if it will absorb and you may have to dampen hair so have a spray bottle available just in case.

Can you roller set the hair ? I’ve been asked to rollerset a deceased body
@MsMortuary
@MsMortuary 2 года назад
You can but the results may vary. If a roller set is requested I normally style it dry and then roll the hair for a more defined style. If you wet set, you would need prepare the hair days in advance and allow to air dry but you still take the chance of the hair not being completely dry due to the temperature of the room where the deceased are stored.
@katrinafrench6444

@MsMortuary
@MsMortuary 2 года назад
@@katrinafrench6444 I would just keep it rolled, spray with a light holding spray and then style. If hair is natural use products to protect from humidity when heat styling. Start in the back to make sure hair takes well to the heat first.
