@@ctk4949 🤔 Oh really? But I'm not with a major US carrier. In fact, I purchased my Pixel directly from Google. I got away from the subsidized phones through the major carriers years ago ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think it'll be neat to see this technology trickle down to more affordable phones. I would also like to see it get more robust and durable, lots of potential here. Very cool.
I’d love for the tech to be perfected and mainstream. It’d be amazing if 5 years from now, tablets are made redundant because our folding phones are also our tablet. Better for the environment (and our wallets) too if that was to happen
You can unfold it completely flat if you use a small amount of force. Google said it's normal. Hasnt been an issue on mine opening it all the way flat with just a bit more effort. And yeah, creases, notches, hole punches, or any screen protrusions never "go away." But i still like the Pixel Fold much better than the Z Fold 4 I traded. Aspect ratio and Google UI push it way over the top.
@@mikefromlighthousesmma1707 Not amazing, about average, comparable to the ZF4. Heavy users on-the-go will probably need to charge a bit before the end of the day. I'm a heavy user as well, but with wireless chargers everywhere, it's a non issue for me.
@@mikefromlighthousesmma1707 In certain situations, it can get warmer than most phones, but it's not common, and still perfectly usable. Since it hasn't been reproducible, I'm thinking it's more of a software issue that will get fixed or at least improved in the future.
Got one last week..All points told in your review is spot on..!! Also have a competing model , Oppo Find N got from China which is retailed ~1100$ much lesser . A comparison review of both would be good for your viewers 👍
I can kinda justify the crazy $$$ price because I would just say this is my flagship phone AND iPad…. But honestly, it’s not quite at the iPad level with screen real estate… so probably not gonna be something I will seriously consider any time soon.
I previously had the Samsung Fold 4, loved it when it was unfolded but the aspect ratio of the front screen prevented me from really enjoying it. I spent a few weeks watching reviews from those that got to try out the Pixel Fold early and I read a bunch of articles, quickly became obsessed. Needless to say I've had mine for about two weeks now and I love it so freakin' much. While the price point is insane for these foldable phones, this one actually feels worth the price point - way more than the Samsung Fold anyway. In my opinion of course lol
Mine coming soon. Can't wait. Dnt love thr price but I paid that for thr z fold 3 and loved it at 1st then started not to as much because of the front screen. I also became obsessed with the google pixel folds reviews
@@wakanda4eva if you had the Samsung Fold before, once you get this phone you will probably be like "wow, this is what a foldable phone should be". Nothing against Samsung at all by saying that, the Pixel Fold is just the complete package
Great review Lon. I switched from iphone to the pixel 7 and 7 Pro for my business. I've been super happy with them. I'm very interested in the fold but I'm going to hold off till the fold 2. But you nailed it with pictures performance has been fantastic. Not a gamer but signal has been the main reason why i switched and battery life
Great review as usual Lon! I can't imagine not enjoying your opinions on something regardless of how much I agree with anything you say. [I don't often disagree with much of anything anyways.] All your videos are always backed up by such a strong commitment to facts, analysis & strong ethics and morals. Thanks for doing such good work.
With your testing, how was heat. Did it get hot in hands. Device too hot to record 4k 60? It seems some people are having issues with heat and some are not. If that's the case I think some people are getting bad in nuts somehow.
18 Hundred dollars! Wow, yeah, that is a pass for me. I always thought that fold phones should have had it's outer screen a e-ink display and then if you wanted to have a OLED screen you open it up.
As opposed to being stoked at the idea of a foldable phone that "can do so much more" I find myself clutching my S10 with it's removable storage and headphone jack even tighter, and thinking to myself whether or not I go backwards to a feature phone from a smart phone with my next purchase. I'm just not interested in spending more than $1000 every couple years, and I'm not 15 years old anymore needing the latest greatest tech because I'm bored.
I don’t think you need to upgrade every couple of years, but dude… S10? That’s crazy lol. I honestly don’t get people that hold on to features like the headphone jack. I will take my airpods over a headphone jack any day.
Yeah really honestly I would much rather just haven't been back the headphone jack and expand the store and charger in the box rather than foldables that 99% of people can't afford
@@SnowyRVulpixI mean not if you want to game with zero latency. Or to listen to music with no loss or compression. Or if you want something that won't become e-waste in a few years. And the true advantage of the phone with the headphone jack is you can use both, Bluetooth and wired headphones. I use Bluetooth probably 75% of the time but when I actually need to gain with no latency or listen to music the headphone jack is an obvious tool that every phone should have. Honestly the S10 is a perfectly fine piece of phone even now. Still get security patches, 5G is mostly irrelevant for US customers at least. It's disappointing it doesn't get Android 13 but you can absolutely use an S-10 . Not to mention you still have the capacite fingerprint sensor, Samsung pay an expandable storage all of which Samsung has ditched. And a QHD screen on almost every S10 model whereas now you have to pay $1,300 to get a QHD screen. Even the $999 S23 Plus is a full HD screen
I just ordered the other type of foldable. A Samsung Z Flip5. It's a little cube and small display when folded and a normal sized phone when open. My 1st foldable.
I expect Google devices not to have a microsd card slot. Sucks, but that's been the norm for them for a long time. But no video over the USB-C port is just ridiculous, given the high price tag. Also, despite advances in the durability of the flexible screens, they're still likely to fail at the hinge from mechanical wear. So despite the cool features and utility, an $1800 e-waste device is a big pass for me.
have anyone had a folding phone that lasted a year without problems ? i would say 2-3 pieces for me every year. im on my second one over a period of 7 months, and its starting to show the exact same problems as the last one
On my 4th Samsung Fold. Not a single problem on any. Nor have my colleagues with the same devices had problems. Might want to look for a pattern in what you are doing with the phone
The Google Pixel Fold can fold flat according to RU-vidr "MrMobile" aka Michael Fisher. Check his review "Pixel Fold Review: The Price Isn't The Point" at 4:38 he says "... you kind of need to force it." I think it needs to be a gentle push.
As usual Britain gets fked...From £1,749. That's 2 and half times the cost of my gaming PC. Hard pass. When we start seeing £400 mobile folders...Maybe.
Was discussing these foldables with some IT folks the other day. They felt the same as I - the fold point is a point of weakness and likely a point of failure. Time will tell, though.
I don't follow news on foldables much since I'm not particularly interested, though interested enough to see Lon's review, but I have heard(I think it was Linus of LTT) that the creases of these are weak and develop signs of wear after some time. These are definitely not for me. For all the functionality they have, they also seem to bring about new problems.
They seem a bit cumbersome, and also harder to protect. Also, the 'phone' screen and the 'tablet' screen are both too small. I suspect that foldables won't be a popular way to use a phone.
I really wish reviewers would compare specs with actual specs. If you put, on google's site, the folds camera specs and 7a's specs you will see this is NOT the 7a's cameras
I see that Google wants more developers to start doing their thing for their apps, but in my opinion it just seems half baked. Samsung went on their own to make sure their apps are full screen on their foldable devices. Google should just do the same until developers are just on board.
These things represent less than 1% of Samsung's market share and probably 1/10 of 1% of Android market share. Yet, they probably get like 30% of the media coverage. I think that's why companies are making them, it gives you a bunch of earned media even though most people still don't buy them. Maybe when someone walks into a carrier store they might think about a Google Pixel when they buy a regular phone because they've seen some of these videos. They're basically Halo products. You were five generations in for Samsung and they still haven't even cracks 2% of the market share with foldables including their flip which is relatively cheaper.
Yeah I think you are right on with this assessment. That said if they had a lower cost version I think these would sell very well given the popularity of small tablets and/or large screen phones. Funny thing is that I know of a few less-than-tech savvy people in my circle that walk around with the Folds so they're finding some general adoption (anecdotally at least).
i wanted to try a foldable so i picked up a used galaxy fold z3 (not cheap but cheaper than buying new!). It is a fun phone and I do think there is a ton of potential in having essentially a phone that becomes a small tablet when you need it. Also loved the capacitive fingerprint sensor in the power button. But I was worried about breaking it and had to put on a pretty big case for protection as well as to store the optional s pen. Then I got frustrated one day with the front screen in direct sunlight, and opted to trade it in for a good discount on an s23 ultra. I wish I waited as would have gotten an even bigger trade in value samsung for the zfold 5 --$200 more than the trade in for the s23 ultra. But...part of me is more comfortable with the ultra's battery life and....hopefully less chance of breaking it. I would check sites for used devices if you want to try out a folding device at a discount.
