Now that the design is refined, consider getting it printed in titanium rather than plastic. It won't melt, and has low thermal conductivity so his finger won't heat up much even if the flame touches the area around the tip.

I think the next stage is to have a finger that can accept multiple different attachments. Things that can click on the end such as the lighter, a torch, a laser pointer, a fork... Then have a little 'ammo belt' with each attachment. I sort of wish I had lost a finger now.

The singer in my classic rock band "Captain Morgan and the Fish" used to play guitar and keyboards. While getting loaded for a gig, he dropped the trailer hitch on the ball and cut his left index finger off. What he needs is a prosthetic he can play guitar with.

Given the size constraints and all, why not a plasma lighter ? can also be built as 2 parts and use wires in the hinge - you can leverage a lot of build volume and have great battery capacity

That is really cool. Super cyberpunk. What he needs is a finger with a quick connect tip that can he can swap out for different uses. Like a lighter, a flash drive, an LED light, or a little pocket knife.

Make a finger with tiny blade at the end, for opening boxes etc.

Prior to watching this I'm imagining something like a zippo or those old cylindrical Japanese/clipper fluid and wick lighters chopped in half and implemented as a fingertip. The steel bodies of those can get pretty hot though. **Edit: Yup, needs a lid that seals though or all the fuel will evaporate pretty quickly like a zippo, pretty sure I noticed a refill before the fire breathing. Maybe you could make it so the lid/fingertip fits over the outer diameter of the lower half of the fingertip and seals by making it slightly larger and lowering the hinge, it might need a relief cut or two around the hinge to stretch over the bottom potion of the fingertip with a flexible material, although you could probably do it without the relief cuts with some fine tuning of the hinge and a step cut into the top of the bottom half of the fingertip that holds the lighter so it appears flush when closed, similar to how a zippo lid sits over the insert. I say cut but you'd design that in prior to the print. Also you could attatch a ring to the base of the prosthetic that goes around the base of his ring finger to stabilize it, that would be stable but limit range of motion, maybe a flexible semi-circle, think a ring but cut in half, that extends in the direction of his wrist and rests on the top of his hand and his palm between the webbing of his fingers could work, doesnt have to be big, just enough to stop it from twisting, sort of like the existing base shape but longer. You could also potentially (over)do that by extending it into a flexible vaguely conical shape that envelops his palm from about the base of the ring finger to the middle/side of the palm, add some racing holes like a classic watch strap for comfort and style, that would definitely suit jan, some relief cuts/holes around the base of his finger so he can still move the base of his pinky to articulate the finger and you're golden. A hinge would potentially limit his motion in terms of splaying his fingers with an extended base unless you did some sort of open uni-joint but that would be too bulky to fit in the space of a knuckle so cuts and flexiblity seems like the simplest solution. You may be able to redesign the retention system aswell if you had two straps went from from the conical base enveloping the corner of his hand, around the webbing of his thumb and over the top of the hand back to the base, and also around his wrist just under the thumb or to a nicer bracelet to retain the extanded base to the hand in two axis. That would go further toward durability as well as the cyberpunk look as you could do away with the thin string bracelet and embed the string in the finger running to the base which is strapped to the hand. Nothing exposed or out in the open (besides straps), he would probably be able to exert more force with it that way too since its anchored to the hand rather than just the finger. I'm gonna stop now cause at this rate im gonna end up designing an entire glove in my head for the purpose of half a finger, think about it though, it it had a base you could attatch a lazer to it for the nerf dart lol, and all sorts of other wacky shit. Like a box cutter or tiny flip knife he could drag his closed fist in a can holding position to cut with, maybe even an entire otf knife mechanism in a slim 3d printed enclosure for some wolverine type deployment, it would need to be stable though, hence the base and new retention system.

Would be extra neat if it lights by pulling back the cap at the end of the pinky. And if you make it spring-loaded it could snap back into place to extinguish the flame.

You should build Jan a super long finger, like the one Professor Farnsworth uses in Futurama, that way he could turn the TV on from far away!

For the next finger idea, a mini ratcheting screwdriver would be useful. Or a hidden canopener / hidden corkscrew.

You took a good approach to this by just using an existing product and making a holder for it. So you didn't have to deal with much trouble getting it to light well. What you should have done if you wanted to really make it amazing was to have the fuel line in the wire making the finger bend and have a little butane tank on the wrist part. Then just use a small metal pipe as the nozzle to avoid the melting and with enough flow it should heat up. For looks and functionality you could also modify the metal guard of a lighter to fit around the finger. The tip would be the guard. To light it you could have a small battery hooked up to a capacitor and a switch to charge it until a spark jumps between a wire and the electrically grounded guard to light the gas. The plastic wouldn't melt and it could be a lot cooler. With a potential hazard to lose even more fingers you could potentially turn the finger into a flame thrower. It would take lots of testing and time to design tho.

Just to correct the opening sentence: Humankind started using and keeping naturally occurring fire (mostly from lightnings) approximately 1.5 million years ago. We started actually making fire about 400,000 years ago, but this number is impossible to pinpoint exactly.
