I Made A Huge Mistake - Epic Two Day Vanlife and Canoeing on Lillooet Lake

In this episode, I head to Lillooet Lake for 2 days of epic canoeing and vanlifing. I set up shop at a rec side on the In-Shuck-Ch Foest service road, and spent 2 days canoeing lilooet Lake. Day one, I head north towards Mount Currie, and paddle 17 kilometers total, with a nice stop at a sandy beach as well. The wind picked up just before I got back, but I made it fine, and because I was living in luxury with my 1998 GMC Safari van, the conditions at camp were irrelevant. I made mac and cheese with smokies for dinner, I didn't really nail it, but it was OK. More importantly I headed out canoeing in the opposite direction, south. I tried to get to a bridge way down on Little Lillooet Lake, but I ultimately didn't make it. What I did do was give an interesting lesson on the history of this area, which was home to the "Douglas Road", a land and water trade route that would of connected port Pemberton with Harrison Lake, which ultimately flows into the Fraser River. Which was a critical route in the BC gold rush days and before. It gets the name of "Douglas" because the first ever governor of the colony of British Columbia put it into action. That's right, the trade route that went through here actually predates Canada itself. While that's good history, the real action started when I canoed down a river that I couldn't canoe back up. I thought I was screwed, and I was, until the first boat I had seen in 2 days appeared. It turns out that it was a guy named Kolby, who runs a fishing guide company named Kolby's Fishing Adventures(@KolbysFishingAdventures on Instagram), and we was able to bring me and my canoe up river. It worked out really well, because I would of been absolutely screwed if he didn't show up. Not all heroes wear capes!

I feel your pain buddy and also understand when plan B comes together in an epic way. This spring I watched a video of a little old lady kayaking around Kings Island on the Connecticut River. I grabbed my canoe and I was about halfway down the river when I said to myself, I don't remember rapids in her video. When I rounded Kings Island every stroke I took upstream I ended up two strokes back. My plan b was to drag my canoe up a 40 ft embankment, carry it across a parking lot and put it in an old canal that I was not sure if it was clear or not. The canal trip turned out to be very nice and putting the canoe back into the river above where I parked was easy. Turn out to be one of the most fun days I've had in years.

I like it. Sometimes you just gotta take a chance and see what happens. Glad it worked out for both of us. I'm glad I didn't find any rapids on my river though😂

Wild man, how lucky to catch a quick ride like that! That first lake was amazing, the second one seemed like more of a deathtrap LOL.

Ya I definitely recommend staying on the main lake, other one wasn't worth it😂.

Always found my days spent at Lillooet Lake to be fantastic! Have not had the pleasure of canoeing or camping around it though. All were day trip up from the Whistler area. Oh man, the timing of that ride was epic!! What a great bunch!!

It's beautiful. The campsite I stayed at was great, but the 2nd night some rowdy Australians showed up and kind of ruined the vibe. It's nice that it is close enough to civilization that you can experience it as a day trip, or camp. Options are good!

Nice one, great scenery, great historical commentary as usual, good thing Colby came along, maybe you can employ your drone for pre trip scouting as needed
@SARGEinc
@SARGEinc Месяц назад
Thank you. I definitely need to do some sort of advanced scouting. Whether it is by drone, research, or just looking at the water, I definitely needed to do something different😂

@@SARGEinc meh, you seem to be doing pretty good anyway, now if you venture into whitewater a little scouting may be necessary
@SARGEinc
@SARGEinc Месяц назад
@@frankevans287 I definitely like me some flatwater. I did a tiny section of whitewater on the Bowron lakes(if you can call it that), and now I'm probably just going to stick to lakes for the rest of summer😂

You need to do a Canadian lake tier list for canoeing.
@SARGEinc
@SARGEinc Месяц назад
I need to canoe more lakes first! But maybe I should introduce some sort of rating system on the lakes that I do paddle?

Where's the dehydrated donut? man, that I fear doing things like that in the wild. that'd be a hell of a walk back for someone who went too far.
@SARGEinc
@SARGEinc Месяц назад
Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good😂. It definitely made me think about things after doing this, in hindsight it was a bad idea. Bad ideas can get you hurt out here. Ultimately here I would of been fine, albeit having a shitty day, even if I had to walk back to the van. I will dehydrate a donut.
