I wanted to use as little UI as possible to make a crafting system that was a little more unique and required more player involvement than a pure UI based system.

this is a perfect mechanic to combine with machinery, as the machines can replace the mundane tasks if you´re gonna mass produce. Gives an incentive, and if you could incorporate physicalised crafting into machines (like windmills or saws) you could open up for a lot of creativity and space for experimentation. Incredible work dude

I love this solution. I was thinking about how one would speed up making wooden planks so they could be used for building.

I like that idea, though if it were still physical in the machines then the cpu would probably take a hit further into the game as you start to use more machines. It'd probably be better to have a few different animations to play randomly

I love the physics, I see potential for this. Don't give up. Just few notes from me. (Random gamer notes). -The bird audio is nice, but don't make a loop. Try and make it randomly generetaed and not a looped mp3. -The crafting system is intresting, I can get used to it. But add sounds to it for each click or selection. =Make so that each items is dropped makes a unique sound. =Make the icons bigger, I don't want to squint my eyes to identify what item is what. =Make a background for each items block in the items menu so that if a black background is behind the items doesn't hide it or make it hard to find

Don't forget animation, will make it look cool, and not that I'm deconstructing stuff with my mind, with animations it will give immersion.

I would like to add to this that moving the whole inventory menu to one side of the screen instead of the center might be beneficial. Kind of feels like it's in the way here. The main thing that's happening is the crafting, which most players will naturally want to do in the center of the screen so moving the menu somewhere else would probably help in keeping the focus on the mechanic. Edit: I looked at the other videos in the channel. Seems like they already did this lol

@@Karstin1812true but the mouse always goes to the middle of the screen because the mouse controls the camera movement so in the middle is better. Having to move the mouse that far every time you open the inventory would be annoying and slow.

Looks like "terrafirmacraft meets teardown" and it's very impressive! Btw I think that it would be more fitting if you could put items in the storage physically instead of opening the UI, it would be more immersive, but I don't know how you'll pull that off though.... maybe not such a good suggestion. I love the tree chopping mechanic, but I also think that instead of "treecapitation" you should make the player chop each wood block separately, it would make the game less easy. Also introduce element of failure: blocks of wood need to be chopped approximately to the amount that a block contains, if the player fails to do so, he/she will get wood chippings, which by the way may come in handy in other crafting recipes. Same for sticks, which can be obtained by chopping a log into firewood, then chop firewood into sticks. I don't think anyone has done something like that in any game. Also a potential for a progression curve: stone axe chops too little wood and is imprecise, can ruin many logs, bronze axe is more durable and chips wood a lot more but is heavy and still ruins wood sometimes, iron axe is good, steel axe is light, precise and cuts through wood like knife through butter, ancient lazer cutter is a relic of the long dead civilization, which was used to cut stone, wood and iron without waste, can only be found in dungeons. But then again it's your game after all, you should do what you think is right... Edit: instead of chest, use shelves, unless you want to lock something up. Chest has been cliché for a long time allready and you have a physicalized game, with well modelled items, let those items be on display! You can make different storage blocks, which can have extra uses apart from being just storage: like firewood racks, coal pits, meat hooks, baskets which can be easily picked up and placed on the go, barrels to marinate food in (barrels can also be filled with explosives, ignited androlled downhill), vases etc.
@DonnaPinciot
@DonnaPinciot Год назад
Exactly what I was hoping for! Using a knife to cut the base out from those reeds, them falling physically, and then picking them up. Using the axe to carve the tree up in to usable chunks, instead of it poofing in to particles and items. Each physics object can represent a particular item, until it gets too damaged/doesn't have enough voxels to fill its quota, so it becomes scrap. These objects would be saved as-is in your inventory, and retain their prior state when removed. It would also allow you to easily pick up and move small chunks of stuff. Heck, even storage could be that. The only non-physical space in the world could be your inventory, while everything else gets literally placed in the world. I seriously expected that chest to have the lid grabbed by some Amnesia-style hand physics interaction, and then dragging the items out of your inventory to place them physically in to the chest. It would also be great for dynamic storytelling and roleplay. Maybe you blasted a piece of stone while in a dungeon, and it helped you kill many enemies and escape with your life? You could pick that stone up, carry it back to your base in your inventory, and then have it on display. Or you want to carve a piece of art? Do it from some stone you carve out of the wall, and store it. Even trade, if multiplayer might be a thing! Also, pipe-dream, you could do away with inventory systems altogether, and _only_ have physical storage. If you need to store stuff, make a backpack you can wear. When interacting with it, you take it off, place it down, open it, and fill it, or slide things in to bands. Maybe you could make a sack, tie a rope to it, and pull it around or toss it over your shoulder to transport some larger things? I'm not super disappointed by the approach they've gone for, it's pretty standard for most games, but it feels like there could be so much more direct-world interaction.

Really cool and I like where it goes! I would just tune it so you don't have to open the menu sooo many times. Minecraft is nice because you open the menu once and do everything. But here having to go back and forth can be a pain. One problem being that, if you want to set an item exactly where you are looking, you have to first move, open menu, check if you can, otherwise clos emenu, move again, open menu check again

I want some magical crafting (for some items) where the voxels all mix together somewhat randomly, then rearrange to form the final item. It just looks SO cool in my head. I imagine a less magical version should be doable though. Compare starting and ending voxel positions (hardcoded via 3d modeling), then do some pathfinder algorithm and move the voxels into place. Some voxels would need to change colors, others erased. I'm an open source tool developer, NOT a gamedev, so i don't really know what I'm talking about.
@vitulus_
@vitulus_ 2 года назад
very nice, although I think the axe top part should be in the stick like real life.
@vitulus_
@vitulus_ 2 года назад
@Shangex Okay sure, you can also make it so the sharp part of the axe is in the same direction of the stick and you have to cut the tree like you are holding a javelin. Reason you wouldn't is because its inefficient. Hence, why I suggested something that is more common in real life. Example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BN-34JfUrHY.html&ab_channel=PrimitiveTechnology
@vitulus_
@vitulus_ 2 года назад
@Shangex Well it does, you realise the axe is premade right? Model wise.
@vitulus_
@vitulus_ 2 года назад
@Shangex Doesn't *have to* create something any specific way, I realise that I was trying to talk about my opinion whilst you were thinking I mean some objective rule on how to make games, sorry that is unclear. I am just providing my opinion that I prefer if the axe was more realistic. Hopefully that clarifies my original message.
@vitulus_
@vitulus_ 2 года назад
@Shangex Well I'm of course happy to discuss opinions of whether it is realistic all not, but this message: "Yes. And why does the creator of this model has to create something that is only efficiency oriented?" Was not doing that, so I needed to make clear that I'm not saying he has to do anything, I was just providing my opinion. Opinion being more realistic is better, which he can choose to use. Of course you can change my mind on what is a realistic axe. Anyways, when an axe head is on the side on a stick held by rope. All the force of every hit is pushed into the rope. Rope is significantly weaker than wood, therefore quite inefficient. These tools weren't made to break after 1 tree.

Looks intriguing. I remember a similar crafting system within a Roblox game "survival 303" circa 2016. I'm not sure about that hotbar though, I presume that it's supposed to be as if each item as mapped to each hand, but you'd have to lean into that. A terrible example of a pointlessly short hotbar would be Subnautica, that game has few items to use but even limited to 5 you still open your inventory needlessly often.
