If you fly in the south east of the UK you will definitely have heard of Bovingdon, it's the site of the BNN VOR but there's so much more to it than just a navaid, and YES there is a small runway there and YES you can visit, and today that's where I'm going to take you.
Come and join my on a flight from North Weald to Bovingdon an ex-RAF wartime airfield steeped in history and home to the BNN VOR.

My name is Terry Kent and I am a General Aviation PPL private pilot operating out of Andrewsfield EGSL about 25 miles to the north east of London in the UK. Short Field is my channel focused on the lighter side of General Aviation including flight and airfield reviews, equipment unboxing and review plus all things private pilot related. I use various cameras to record my videos including GoPro and Insta 360 and stills and edit them in Adobe Premiere Pro, I am an animator as well and often use animations to describe situations more clearly I use Blender and Adobe After Effects for these. I always attempt to post my videos in the highest possible quality, normally 4k.
I fly a 2011 Pipersport two seat single engine aircraft that is also known as the PS28 or SportCruiser in the USA (America) it is known under the FAA as an LSA or Light Sport Aircraft and can be flown on a very basic license. In the UK it is a Part 21 airplane which requires a full licence but it's generally cheap to run, affordable maintenance and great value for money. It cruises at 100 to 105 knots and has superb short take off and landing or STOL capabilities. I visit farm strips, back country and short airfields, some of them dangerous and I try not to crash :-), as well as international airports and try to learn something new every time I fly.

Thanks Terry another great video, also nice history lesson, didn’t realise it was that active. Someone said dancing on ice is filmed there, the hanger you fly over on finals, wasn’t sure how true it was. Keep those videos coming 😎

Hi Terry just a thought for you, a take off technique introduced to me by one of Bartons legendary Instructors from years gone bye Charlie Rollo, instead of rotating the aircraft at a speed, just as the elevators become effective hide the end of the runway with the nose, the aircraft will become airbourne at the lowest possible speed in ground effect, then very gently (particularly on the Sports Cruiser) lower the nose to accelerate to climb speed. I believe this method gives the shortest take-off roll, particularly off soft grass strips

A non-pilot here who really enjoys your stories. I’ve seen a couple other videos where you start flights later in the day than originally planned. In my industry (engineering and construction) rushing to squeeze in work at the end of the day is a significant contributor to many accidents. Not a criticism or saying you’re making bad decisions. Just something to keep in mind. Enjoy your flights!

Good old Bovingdon.... lots of glider flights from there in the early 70s. I flew the last RAF (air cadets) flight there in Kirby Cadet Mk.3 XN246 in 1972 before the gliding school relocated to manston.

Correction... the last flight in XN246 was on 25.10.1970. Just looking through my old logbook. I did my first solo there (again in XN246) on 4.4.1969. I fly a Cub replica these days (G-BZHU) so hopefully I will try to get to BNN myself soon.

Good video. I try to avoid VORs as much as possible as they all tend to be as you say "Hunny Pots" and I think a lot of pilots are heads in as they get there to make sure they meet their turn point, so a wise choice to go lower than standard. I do think you push yourself into tight time frames, some times, it could lead to get thereitis (be careful).

Cutting it a bit fine on the return there Terry. Bovingdon, another airfield near me that I’ve not visited. I did try to fly into Finmere yesterday but didn’t get a reply to my PPR call. So ended up going to Bicester - loads of RAF history there and now a lot of classic car businesses in the old airfield buildings. Definitely worth a visit, but as a grass glider site, maybe it’s too long for you!

So the UK perform circuits/pattern at 2000 AGL? Or is it overfly height of 2000. Here in Australia circuit height is 1000 feet AGL for GA and overfly at least by 500 feet the heightest circuit.

You are correct Glenn I explained that really badly. Circuits are 1000ft overhead joins are normally up to 1000ft above circuit height.

Terry. Don’t you have your PPL? Why can’t you fly at night? I know with a LSA License you can’t fly at night. Isn’t the Sport Cruiser night capable? I know it’s not IFR rated. But night?

North Weald closes just after sunset. I have a full PPL but this Sport Cruiser is also uncertified for night ops.
