You have some arcs down the line that are EXTREMELY long, so consider it, we won't mind a split review. Also, after the next 2 arcs, there's an anime filler REALLY worth watching. We even got Merphy to watch it, that's how worthy it is
I was smiling so much everytime you spoke about Nico Robin and how mysterious and interesting you found her character. I think you read her intentions pretty well, and I'm sure you'll only love her more as time goes by.

General recommendation would be to wait on being caught up to the story of the manga entirely, but I think that this should be good as long as you've passed chapter 600. 3) I highly recommend you talk about Toh-Toh with Merphy (with the key words "the oasis guy in Alabasta"), she loves him very much ❤

I've watched most of the booktubers who are reading One Piece and please don't apologize for long content. The longer the better, the more detailed the better. After having One Piece in our lives for so long, sometimes we forget how much we love it, the little moments that make One Piece special. So when you gush about it, its almost like we are re-reading it all over again.🤣
The way Luffy defeats Crocodile is very symbolic. Crocodile was someone who operated from the shadows and Luffy defeats him by launching him into the sky (from the underground), exposing him to everyone.
Love the longform video! When it comes to the One Piece community don't feel bad for long videos, we eat them up. My vote is stick to the longform chapter by chapter style because personally it feels like it should, a reread with a new fan. I would wipe my memory of One Piece so fast if I could experience again for the first time, and this brings back all the feels of going through the series again.

I think every One Piece fan would erase it fully from their memory. Experiencing this series for the first time is just an amazing journey. Of course the level of re-readability is outstanding, as well, but not the same. For example, in my weekly experience I didn't catch up on a kid from a flashback reappearing as an adult a few arcs and like years later, I thought they were different characters. It was years later with the adult version of the character already established, that I re-read the flashback and went "Shit, it's them!!" Of course, bingers won't have that issue, as the flashback will still be fresh in their minds. The best part was, without knowing their past, because Oda doesn't show what would make it obvious, there's only a glimpse of a hint, the character still worked perfectly fine. When I realized they were the same and put both stories together, they only got better, of course, but I could've spent my life without knowing and I'd still love both characters
If you dont mind filler, just ignore this, but I just thought Id suggest looking up a guide that tells you when to skip filler arcs and episodes, the general consensus is that only the g8 arc directly after skypia is really worth watching, its amazing.
@@Phantasmen agreed or look into one pace which cuts down the pacing issues so it more similar to the manga. However, reading the manga is prob the best way to enjoy OP without the amount of pacing issues and filler.
I personally don't mind chapter by chapter review as while doing in bulk, stuffs miss out. While doing per chapter makes you remember small details and review.
By the way! Remember when we told you to be on the look-out for Usopp's lies? Where, Alabasta made another one come true! When he gets spotted by Kuro on Kaya's property, he lies and tells him he saw a legendary mole in the garden as an excuse to explain what was he doing there. And now Usopp is fighting a legendary mole... person. Also, one thing that I found really interesting to keep in mind in One Piece is the Devil Fruits lore! It comes really far in-between, but it's really interesting!

One small detail that I just personally find very charming is that Mr 2 is actually gender fluid and this is why he doesn't have a female partner like the other men of baroque works and why his full title is "Mr 2, Bon Clay" they take on the role of both the man and the woman on their squad. Which i find fun because it goes to show that no matter how big of an asshole and absolute sociopath crocodile is, he at least isn't a transphobe and even makes efforts to accommodate queer identities
Ngl, Bon Clay was my first positive representation of a visibly queer person in media. As a kid who grew up largely isolated from the internet or any queer community, I didn't even realize that people could act outside their assigned gender! But Bon's character helped me recognize that desire in myself, and i'll always be thankful to Oda for that.
Shortest 2 hour video. I said to myself I would only watch 30 minutes across four days but I ended up never pausing it. Your rhythm is great, I feel like I'm binging One Piece again. I can't wait for the next saga. You have read a fifth of the story already. We are currently beginning the last saga so don't you worry about weekly chapters when you catch up (Although last saga might me pretty long. The previous one was like 5 years).

Ace is one of my favorite character designs and combined with his rather chill attitude makes him one of my favorites too! 55:55 shounen, shoujo, jousei and seinen are the target audience, but many call them genres as well. Shounen = teenage boys Shoujo = teenage girls Josei = adult women Seinen = adult men 1:16:55 honestly, I think every One Piece character is more robust and durable than humans in our world, except for Kuina. Rip, she succumbed to Down D. Stairs 1:39:25 don't worry, we love these wacky characters too! 1:46:45 this is a pretty good way to tell when someone is dead... These characters are just way too durable 2:05:00 I really love this scene too! I was so disappointed that Vivi wouldn't join officially, but this scene was worth it, made me teary-eyed! I loved this arc's second part! Personally, the first part was slightly dragging here and there, but all in all, it's a great arc and the saga itself didn't disappoint imo
Nico Robin showed us little instances throughout this saga that she has her own agenda by doing the following things against the interests of Crocodile and the Baroque Works criminal organization: 1) In the scene where the boat explodes back in Whisky Peak, there's a shot of arms moving across a black background right before. Now that we know her ability, we can assume she saved Igaram by pulling him off the boat before it exploded. 2) Before the crew head to Little Garden (where they would have to wait for a year in order for the Log Pose to set to the next island), she offered them an eternal pose to an island right nearby Alabasta, Nothing At All Island, which turns out is actually an island made of poop from the Island Eater Goldfish that Dorry and Brogy killed at the end of the arc. Thankfully Sanji pulled a 007 and snagged an eternal pose to Alabasta. 3) During the meeting of the Baroque Works Officer Agents with Crocodile, she didn't mention that Sanji wasn't in the pictures drawn of the Strawhats by Mr. 2 (Bon Clay). She definitely saw him when she was on the Going Merry. 4) She could have killed Pell by breaking his spine in two, but she didn't, and she captured Vivi to bring her to the crew's location. 5) She saved Luffy.
I'm actually really loving the chapter-by-chapter review updates that are the basis of your videos! A lot of the smaller details can get lost in arc-to-arc or even volume-by-volume reviews and it's so very different from other creators on RU-vid that I have watched lately that it's really just such a nice treat. Keep it up!

Regarding the poll, I can't recommend Hunter x Hunter enough. It is masterful, despite appearing simple at first; it delves into deep ethic and psychological topics and I could just gush about it almost as much as about One Piece. :D
I agree with everything you said about what’s important to manga for you, so far it has been character, world building and story that has captured my heart! Can’t wait to read more manga, and I have so many plans to in the future, just kicking myself for taking so long on giving it a chance 😭
My best advice is to just read the manga all the way through before looking into any side stuff. There is a manga version of those light novels and sanji has a side manga where he cooks. Both are so much fun but don't read till you are caught up. It will also help the caught up to one piece depression, where you have to start waiting 1 to 2 weeks per chapter instead of binging.

@ 1:32:00 The covers with the gold font are first editions (Well, not first editions but like early editions of the manga), after like 2009 Viz changed its release schedule to be closer to Japan's releases (Japan was at like volume 55 while in the US it was at around volume 20), and went on a 6 month printing spree of 5 volumes a month (30 volumes printed in 6 months), and this is where they stopped printing them with nice gold fonts and put the subtitles of the arcs at the top of the volumes (like your volume 21 says Baroque Works One Piece (Baroque works being what Viz called the Alabasta saga) so it's a print after 2009 and your volume 22 has gold font so it's pre 2009.
This arc has so many iconic moments, I'm so glad you go into depth about all of them!! An underrated moment I love from this arc has to be when the crew escape rain dinners and luffy and smoker have a small talk afterwards!

I 100% get chills everytime I think of that final farewell to Vivi too. That moment literally changed my life. It's when I realized just how obsessed I was with One Piece because I never considered myself a character reader before, always thought I was more of a plot reader. But nothing can compare to my love for all the One Piece characters.
55:50 Shonen Jump is a magazine published by Shueisha where One Piece is serialized. Shonen literally means "boy" and is usually used as a demographic for manga. Shonen = boy 12-16, Shojo = girl 12-16, Seinen = young male 17-20+, Josei = young female 17-20+ (roughly, at least, not sure if there are exact ages affixed to the terms, but give or take). From the terminology you can probably infer that Sho = pre-teen, young teen, Sei = late teen, young adult, Nen = male, Jo = female. As I said, those terms are usually used for the demographic a manga targets, but they are regular words in Japanese, not a manga exclusive terminology
i love your format of going chapter to chapter, how we can get your view points more along the way instead of just what you think overall at the end. Might get a little bit much when you get to the bigger arcs though.
This arc was a lot doing chapter by chapter, but glad i persevered. I always worry about forgetting things if I review in chunks, but will look into it in the future when we get to the even longer arcs
@@GavinReadsItAll If the Arcs get too big for you, you can also just split them up, not that I dislike long videos, or youtubers "withholding" content I want to see, but if your worry is thoroughness, that should help. Also, have you considered covering the g8 anime filler arc yet? Its the one filler arc beloved by every One Piece fan, the crew is allowed to shine, used masterfully and the "big bad" of the Arc is written masterfully himself too. The g8 filler arc comes directly after skypia, so you still have quite some time to ask around, but Im sure everyone will recommend you watch it, even if you dont want to make a video about it.
Luffy saving Robin WAS the thing she said he owes her. She was to the point of giving up on life and no longer wanting to live, because the poneglyph was what she thought was the last chance she had at something good in her life after all that she's experienced. She has gotten to the point of WANTING to die due to her past... and Luffy denied her. And to her, since he saved her life, he's responsible for the life he saved. That help you understand?
wow you read so fast lol, but that shows that you love one piece ace is also one of my favorite characters! a little tidbit: the english translation uses "oh come my way" instead of "okama way" it's a clever wordplay on the translation okama is the japanese for queer, it basically translates to "the way of the queer", and "oh come my way" is pronounced similarly to "okama way" hence the wordplay about the manga tournament, THEY'RE ALL GREAT! I hope you end up reading all of them but I just voted on what I want to see your impression first (my favorite manga is in the list)
The sea prism mentioned in this arc is so cool. A material that sucks the energy from devil fruit users. And the coolest part is smoker’s main weapon is made of it and a non lethal weapon it just shows his sense of justice, he will always try to capture someone before resorting to killing, it’s something small but it’s overlooked in a lot of media
As someone who has not re-read older OP arcs in years, your journey has been such a joy to be a part of! Breaking the saga down into chapters has made it so easy for me to relive those chapters WITH you 🥰 I absolutely love this format where we get to hear your thoughts, however short they are, per chapter (though yes, that will probably become really difficult as we progress haha). Crocodile is still of my favourite antagonists in the series to-date with his smarts, I just love his ruthlessness and the arrogance because he has something to show for it. You need to keep in mind that most of us went threw 1000+ chapter/episodes already and we usually wait a whole week for a few more minutes of content. The Alabasta Saga alone took about 3 years to fully release. 2 hours really arent that much if you are invested into the series for 10-20 years. At that point its more like going threw some childhood memories again.
Great video, i like that you do it chapter by chapter and giving your thoughts on them( it’s not the norm but why shouldn’t you do it this way and it fits your style so go for it) also I’d recommend to you to look at the covers after the volume is finished since they sometimes spoil stuff

My volumes don’t have page numbers most of the time but I have heard I might be okay to show a page every now and then, as long as I don’t show high quality screenshots of the page directly
There's a podcast called "Piece Meal" where a group of friends read through OP volume by volume that I could HIGHLY recommend. It makes for a really good companion piece actually as the guy leading them through it has a segment at the end of every episode where he brings up notable little details that the rest should remember. They have a great dynamic and you'd probably really enjoy it 😁

Technically Okama is a blanket term that refers to all AMAB gender queer identities. It's sort of ambiguous what Mr 2's identity is but I feel he's more implied to be gender fluid than simply a cross dresser
@Brain Rot well, one piece is not really good at identifying a special character like Mr.2 especially in early chapters. We can still find alot of stereotype jokes even in other manga or anime next generation after one piece. And also if we look into the word "okama" literally outside of one piece context it's a bit you know easy to misrepresented, and when oda left it ambiguous, I guess every reader has their own right to identify them as close as their understanding.

Part of that is because pronouns aren't normally gendered in Japanese and so Viz when translating usually just pick whatever pronoun the character seems to present more as for ambiguously gendered characters. Bon clay, however, sings an entire song about being both man and woman. It mightve been censored in the viz version? I don't exactly remember but I definitely remember it in the anime
@@chezmix64feminine and masculine attributes in language isnt always about gender, it's kinda hard to explain when we are not Japanese ourselves, but there are some pronounce in Japanese that has masculine or feminine attributes. when Mr.2 is speaking in first person, he use あちし (another version of あちさ used by geisha or prostitute). Which is used in fiction or drama. About the songs idk about Viz version. But in anime and manga it's slightly different. In the manga the lyrics says "I (あちし) am a man who is a woman so I'm the best", in the anime it says "okama is a man and a woman, that's why it's the strongest". Simply put when we use western view in Japanese media it just doesn't click, cus we have different history and culture.

The full term is Kodomo-muke manga) Shounen - Male Juvenile (teen) but can also mean Boy Shoujo - Female Juvenile (teen) but can also mean Girl Josei - Young Woman (in Japan the term young refers to generally between 18-40 years of age) Seinen - Young Man
The sbs section is generally oda answering to fan's. Somtime with jokes, other with canon things. There are some sirious things said in sbs that you cannot know it otherwise. I recomend that you read them, not react to it but read it nonetheless
I find it funny how you are scared of having to wait week for the next chapter because for us up to date the biggest fear are the words "break next week"
The mention of having a fear of liminal zones does not bode well for you. at least you can binge the series :) But yeah, Oda does like to take his time with setup. To give you an example (I won't name any names or anything to avoid spoilers) but there was a fairly important character that was first mentioned/discussed in 2009 that was only revealed in-story two or three weeks ago. And yeah, we still don't know anything about the D. name
It’s something I’m working on (the liminal spaces thing) and I know not to take it out on the story as I find setup and build-up sooo important, my poor heart doesn’t know what to do half the time during those moments haha I just make sure I review objectively and not holding the liminal space time against the story
If you want to see more of ace, you should watch some of the episodes during the alabasta arc. He travels with the straw hats through the desert. The episodes are mixed canon and filler. I believe its episodes 94-101
A little bit about the nicknames of Baroque Works female agents. With Mr 1 to 7, the female counterpart is assigned a holiday as their code name: * Paired with Mr. 1 you have Miss Double Finger. Double finger is an expression in Japanese, is both your index fingers up, signaling 1-1, January 1st, New Years Day. * Mr. 2, as an Okama, doesn't have a female counterpart, as he is both Mr. 2 and Bon Clay (misspelled by the translators, it's actually Bon Kurei) references the Bon/Obon festival. * Paired with Mr. 3 you have Miss Golden Week, an assortment of holidays from April 29th to May 5th. * And for Mr 4, 5, 6 and 7 you have Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Father's Day, you know those. Also, while days of the week are reserved for agents 8 to 12, you have Sunday in Miss All Sunday, paired with Mr. 0 (Crocodile) and Friday is reserved for the Unluckies, the vulture and otter, Miss Friday and Mr 13, respectively, Friday 13th, Unluckies.
Gavin, I am so happy you started one piece because these videos are my favourite on BookTube rn. They’re so much fun! Oh Ace 😍 I love him sfm and it was so nice to see luffy’s family outside the straw hats and a glimpse of his relationship with his cooler (and hotter) older brother, and so endearing to see Ace worried about Luffy etc 🥺 btw if you want more Ace you can check out eps 94-101 of the anime, they added filler eps with Ace that aren't in the manga. Fyi his voice is also hot 😍🔥 And Mr 2 Bonclay!!! The power of friendship 🥺 Mr 2 and Ace were 2 definite fan favourites from this arc ❤️ and that last scene with Vivi and the Strawhats saying goodbye wrecked me when I first watched!! This damn story eh 😭 I distinctly remember thinking one piece was just a stupid kids story before I actually started it, and I can’t believe how utterly wrong I was lol. This story has everything, heart, emotion, amazing world building, action etc etc the list goes on. It’s been a lot of fun watching your videos on the Alabasta saga, Luffy and the crew are properly making their name in the Grand Line now! The next saga is one of my personal favourites (even more than Alabasta). Skypeia is when I began to realize Oda’s genius and just how extensive this world that he had created actually was. I hope you enjoy it as well!!!
Just after subscribed and and watched all your OP videos so far, a lot of fun and it only gets better. This next arc is broken into 2. After the Skypia arc i'd recommend watching the anime episodes (196-206) this is the G8 arc which is anime only which is so sad because it's really good. Yeah that depression when u caught up and have to wait a week or 2 is no joke, well there is: Light Novels, Anime, Anime Movies (very enjoyable), RU-vid Theory Crafting Channels and of course OP Odyssey Game among others. One thing i like is in all the OP video games it's impossible if your playing as Sanji to attack a woman. Keeping with that consistency in the story.

The reason why a lot of One piece characters like Pell come back after they die, is because of the editors at shounen jump. Oda brought pell back because he technically committed suicide, which was a big no no in japan at that time. He was forced to bring Pell back, but in the story intended by Oda Pell does die. Same with Kuina, saying she fell down the stairs was a toned down way of saying she took her own life out of depression for being born a woman. In her eyes that meant she wont be able to be the worlds strongest swordsman.
The simpler theory is that Oda suddenly have this idea to give readers the impression "that nobody ever dies in One Piece except for during flashbacks". That's way, when the death of an important character happened, it would feel surreal to the reader (which would match Luffy's feeling at that time).
@@chamorvenigo3128 Yeah but it is also the publisher, atleast in kuinas death. It doesn't make sense, it's a flashback. What makes sense is that the editor doesn't want to publish anything with a child taking their own life.
Oda has also said he doesn't like killing off characters whose designs he enjoys. I believe all those who haven't died in the series will eventually play a really important role later on.

Really recommend watching anime episode 126! The anime is by no means something you should feel compelled to watch in its entirety but in big moments they do excellent work. The climax of this arc is one such moment. Vivi's voice actress as she screams from the clocktower is a particular highlight for me.
Here's something for you to note that you missed: It is said that Nico Robin has her bounty for sinking several warships when she was younger. But... HOW? Her devil fruits literally can't do that, and warships are large enough ships that... well, they're like as large or larger than the ship of Don Krieg's that Mihawk sliced up. So... yeah, something's up there, is it not? But as for what, you will find in time.

BTW one of my favourite anime openings is One Piece opening 10 and once you've gotten past Thriller Bark you should watch it. Really like a callback to all we've been through until then with the Straw Hats.
