Luffy listening to Vivi when they come to the island is actually a really important point for him, where he really starts acting like a leader and learn from someone else. Even pushing aside his impulses for the sake of his crew and their goal with coming there.

Kureha is actually pronounced as Coo-Reh-Hah and is just a common japanese name with no deeper meaning. You're actually doing a pretty good job with the japanese names pronunciations, English-speakers usually have a lot of difficulty with them. Also, I'm really glad you took an interest in Miss All-Sunday this early, she is my favorite character in the entire series.

Next up is Alabasta! Let's go! Trust me when I say this. Alabasta is a fairly early arc if we take the massive length of One Piece into account. Yet, the legacy still goes strong! The moments, the characters, the story . . . everything hits the same . . . in fact, better. If Sanji's flashback in Baratie made me cry for the first time in One Piece, Alabasta is the arc that made me a One Piece fan!

1:10:00 I think that Dr. Kureha initially reacted aggressively towards Chopper leaving because she wanted to test his resolve. She want to see if Chopper whole-heartedly wanted to go, even if it meant defying her and going against her wished. On top of the fact that she's f*cking crazy lol.

as other people already mentioned, luffy taking vivis criticism of his captaining style seriously and changing accordingly, even admiring vivi and saying that shes amazing, is so important and actually it really warms my heart. its moments like these where luffy just feels very different to other shonen protagonists, and he already feels so different to the luffy we started this series with. of course, hes still a moron (affectionately), but honestly this whole arc just makes him feel way more mature and someone worthy of being a captain, at least to me! the trope of found family being willing to practically do anything for each other, up to and including injury and death, is just my favourite thing in the whole world.

He’s come such a long way while also retaining his personality. I hope he never changes personality-wise but continues to grow!

I will say that after all these years, the main antagonist for the Alabasta arc is still one of the top villains in the One Piece universe (some have him at No. 1 or No. 2). I can't wait for you to read it. :)

I discovered your channel recently because of this One Piece series and I got to say, you have such good reading comprehension! I mean, it would be weird if you didn't, given that you're quite literally a book channel, but it's very satisfying seeing you pick up every single thing and remembering them. This is in comparison to my friends that I have recommended One Piece to and they've had so many things just fly over their heads and it's just not the same having someone explain it to you instead of catching it yourself. And be on the lookout for Ace since you've probably already seen him shopping for merch as he is a fan favourite. Loving this series =)

@@GavinReadsItAll Yeah I think rather than having a rule you follow like every chapter or every 5th chapter, its better to just decide after each chapter you read. If you have enough to say about it check in, if not wait until you read enough chapters that you do whether that be 2 or 5. Also maybe do next arc in parts it's more than twice as long as this one

And I have loved the chapter by chapter review so keep them coming 🎉🎉🎉 A bit of a explanation that might come in handy, there are 3 types of devil fruit: logia (give the users power of natural elements, like Smoker’s smoke smoke fruit), zoan (give the users the ability of an animal, eg: human human fruit of chopper and the ox ox fruit of dalton), and paramecia (everything else)

While I agree that you should not watch the anime due to being just too much, you should look at some scenes. In particular Nami asking help in arlong park (plus the "walk") and Dr. Hiruluk death are just amazing scenes that are elevated in the anime by the amazing production and voice work

I didn't find myself getting too emotional in One Piece but when we got to Drum Island, all of that was out the window. Chopper is just too cute! I can't help but cry over his backstory!

Yeah, about Kureha's farewell, it's a pretty common trope in anime of "tough love" that tends to be a part of a lot of "badass tough old person" characters (it is less common in One Piece though). You can see it a little bit in Baratie with Zeff as well and how Zeff and the rest of the cooks came up with this plan to insult Sanji's cooking to make him leave. It's not exactly the same because Sanji overhears their true intentions afterwards, but it's pretty normal for those types of characters to not show their love and try to keep a tough face until the end. I also think it was her way of testing Chopper's resolve in leaving, like "is he just going to give up because she says he can't go?", something like that.

One of the three foremost themes of One Piece is the concept of Inherited Will, and this is one of the first arcs where this overall primary theme is one of the major themes of the arc as well. On this theme, Dr. Hiriluk's final words are some of the most powerful in the series. "When does a person die? ... A man dies when people forget him..." If someone remembers you after you die, or "inherits your will", you are still alive. Interesting to think about this in the context of Gol D. Roger's execution, with his dying words, he brought about the great pirate era, everyone in the entire world knows his name and will remember him forever and effectively immortalizing himself. Thinking about what Dr. Kureha said: "There's no medicine that can work for all diseases in this world. That's why doctors exist! ... You can't save people just by being kind! ..." Dr. Kureha is a doctor of great skill, but she cures people primarily for money, she has soft spots for sure, but she doesn't have a truly kind heart that just wants to help as many people as she can. She is able to cure many diseases but she couldn't cure the injury in Chopper's heart. Dr. Hiriluk is a doctor of almost no skill, but he does have a kind heart, even going so far as to walk knowingly into a trap on the slightest chance that the Twenty MDs were actually sick. He wasn't able to cure any diseases beyond tending to broken bones, but he was able to cure the injury in Chopper's heart. Chopper, inheriting both of their wills, gets his kind heart from Hiriluk and his skill from Kureha, he is truly able to become "the all-purpose medicine" as a doctor.

It doesn't look cheap to me 2:25 I enjoy your current formatting with giving comments to each chapter because it's quite unique right now compared to other One Piece reviewers. My suggestion is to split Arabasta/ Alabasta into 2 or 3 parts (just ask Merphy, Amber Alise or your us for any suggestions on how to split the chapters if you want to do this). Or whatever you'll do, it's fine as well! 6:20 never having been sick is joke in Japan! Japanese people say that idiots never get sick. So Luffy, Usopp and Sanji never been sick is a way to tell fans, that they are idiots. 14:08 There is an actual Christmas witch, so thinking that Kureha is a christmas witch isn't so farfetched lol she has a sleigh, a magical reindeer (with a blue nose, which reminds us of Rudolph), gives you the gift of health while taking your possessions (tbf Santa takes cookies and milk too) and lives in a snowy island where rabbits live that reminds us of polar bears that live at the North pole. 27:00 ah yes, Drum Island heals your soul... I'll quote you on this... The soul-destroying depression called Chopper's backstory has done a great deal on me! 49:55 when I first watched the anime, this misunderstanding with the skull made me so flabbergasted and sad. It was so tragically but beautifully written. 54:25 these cover stories are important and canon to the story, so I'm glad you mentioned it! 1:15:55 Arabasta/ Alabasta is really great! Sometimes I think it's a bit over-hyped for my preferences, but it's great. I'm looking forward to it!

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but, fun fact: Tony Tony Chopper's japanese voice actress is actually the long-time voice actress for Pikachu from the Anime, and it is about as heart-attack inducing at you'd imagine. I wouldn't look it up quite yet, because I think if you do it'd spoil you on some future character developments but there is an absolutely wonderful jingle bells cover using the Anime's voice cast that you can find on youtube, and chopper's singing voice is the most adorable thing. But hey, that's just motivation to keep reading so you can listen to it without any spoils

Oh ya, the way Dr. Kureha reacted to hearing about Chopper leaving plays on two tropes. (1) The same schtick that Sanji went through where all the other chefs insulted Sanjis cooking on purpose to push him to join Luffys crew (Kureha insulting Chopper so Chopper feels resentful and leaves) (2) Dr. Kureha is a tsundere: The Japanese term tsundere refers to an outwardly violent character who "runs hot and cold", alternating between two distinct moods: tsuntsun (aloof or irritable) and deredere (lovestruck).

20:35 There was a 5 minute short that played before the first One Piece movie in theaters called "Django's Dance Carnival" where the Strawhats DO visit Mirror Ball Island. It's pure fluff, anime-exclusive, and set before Drum Island, so there's no harm in taking a look at this point if you're curious (and the whole thing's on RU-vid).

I will say, this is an arc that I prefer in the anime. I like the manga for it, but the anime version holds up as one of my personal favorite arcs. It may be worth checking out in that medium when you have the chance! I think a lot of the emotional scenes hit even harder in the anime

Hmmm I wonder who Ace is 🤔 Mr 2?? Miss All Sunday??? Crocodile???! So many mysteries eh 😂 but really, great vlog as always! Drum Island is so special for me bc 1) it gave us Chopper 2) that backstory! And 3) it really showcased the Strawhats evolving relationship and how much Luffy cares about them. Him carrying Sanji and Nami up the mountain gave me chills when I first watched it. Luffy holding the Dr’s Jolly Roger and keeping it safe and then telling Chopper he has a friend was so heartwarming and emotional 😭 What a guy honestly. And while I would love to see you talk about the anime as well, I agree with those who said it might cause burnout or affect your enjoyment of the story to review both at the same time. I’m an anime only which means I’m only watching the anime rn, but the thought that I have the whole entire manga just waiting for me and that I’ll get to experience the story again for the first time through a different medium makes me so happy, so similarly you’ll have the whole anime just waiting for you to dive into the story once again! Have fun with Alabasta!! The story’s just getting started!

Heya matey, I'm loving your series so far, so I subbed. I'm really looking forward to seeing another fresh perspective on One Piece. I'm currently all caught up in both the anime and the manga (No spoilers, I promise). A couple of things to note: 1. We still, to this day, don't know what the D. means. Currently on chapter 1066. 2. It's pronounced Koo-Ray-Ha. Although Cura would've made sense too. It made me laugh every time you said it. Love it. 3. Do not rush. ANYTHING. You only get to experience this for the first time ONCE. Take your time. You'll enjoy it much more. 4. I love your speculations. Even if I know they're right or wrong, hearing another take is always interesting. Can't wait for the next installment!!

What you're looking for in terms of encyclopaedia about the One Piece world are the Databooks. They vary in content. Some cover the characters in depth up to certain points (usually where the story is at by the time the book was released). Others cover the locations in depth instead. Though, they do almost entirely focus on people and places we have seen rather than further information on places we don't get to see, the routes the Strawhats didn't take. Fans have been praying for an open world video game that just lets us explore this world to our hearts' content. But that's kind of the beauty of the setting. Everything is an adventure. There's something new around every corner so when reading it you can't help but wonder about all the things we don't get to see.

So my theory with why (at least partly) Kureha treated chopper so meanly when he left: I think she was testing his resolve. She wanted to make sure he REALLY wanted to leave and go out to sea. If he could defy her, then he really is certain this is what he wants to do. That's why she packed his things, in case he chose to leave. Also her name is pronounced coo-ray-hah. ☺ Looking forward to seeing you read the next arc!

My head canon for Kureha is that she was a former pirate that discovered the fountain of youth on her travels. Her payment methods are really pirate-like, she easily handled Zoro and Sanji, knew how to threaten Nami and has rare knowledge about the One Piece world as the Gol D. Roger example has shown.

My favorite thing about this arc is when Chopper’s dad was given the speech what someone dyes is when people stopped talk about you not when your die of natural cases of a disease. As a nurse in real life I use that line a few time on my patients, not gonna lie. And they where kinda enjoy it, they praised me, but till now no one got the reference of it …. Heheh

3:25 I do recommend you watch the G-8 filler arc. I comes just before Long Ring Long Land (so 2 full arcs after Alabasta), as filler, of course, it does not have a manga counterpart, but it's almost as good. Beyond that, any moment in the series you considered impactful, go watch it as well, because with all its flaws, the anime does know how to make the punches carried in One Piece a million times harder. Music is always spot on, and the voice acting is just indescribably good (original JP voice acting, the English dub is not bad per se, but it's not good either)
