This channel has been the BEST resource for me as a bedroom producer and I am immediately going to apply all of these tips to my own work. Please NEVER stop making these!!! Your dedication to these breakdowns is awe inspiring
small way is far too modest! ALso, an artist id love to see a forensic breakdown of is Bruno Major. He has a super unique style and sound and his backstory is pretty inspiring and amazing as well.@@AudioHaze
Holy freakin' moly man... I love hearing the contrast between the unmixed / mixed sections of the cover. It makes it clear that you can't just throw the sounds together. That's an art. Your personal connection with the song really showed in the cover. I got goosebumps
Man, firstly, I'm so sorry about your friend. Dedicating this incredible video to him is a beautiful, beautiful eulogy. Your opening up and being vulnerable just displays all the love you have for your friend and for the music of Hozier, and how meaningful it is to you. Totally respect that. I'm not familiar with Hozier's music, but if he treats his music like you treated the production and the covering of the song, I must surely will check him out. Once again, thank you for an outstanding video.
Thanks so much Eduardo :) yeah definitely check it out if you're into modern soul revival stuff!! Its a really cool blend of pop sensibilities with a more gospel, retro influence.
Holy cow can we give a hand to ethan for those vocals. At the beginning of the video I was like "no one can match hoziers vocals" But Ethan might've just done it.
the last part actually made me cry. his music also lifted me up when I was on my lowest. sorry about your friend and you did an amazing job with the cover well done mate.
This is one underrated video. Seems like some people when they discover this gem of a channel, will also discover this gem of a video. Saying it now, 50k views is severely underperformant for what content is here. I doubt that will remain. Keep it up! One of my favorites :)
I've got a be honest, I know I've heard a few of his songs but I'm not that familiar with Hozier as an artist. That said this is a pretty incredible feat you have pulled off. 130 tracks just seems insane for what sounds to be a pretty simple song but the end result speaks for itself. Your story of running into him is pretty awesome as well. This is some of the best content on YT and I'm really enjoying it. Well done.
Thanks man! Yeah its crazy how many tracks can add up into one cohesive sound that sounds like only a few large ones, such a good way to fill out the mix though
Omg buddy there's so much in this video! First though, so sorry for the passing of your friend, but thank you for being able to show something of what he meant to you 🙏 Mate you guys have done a stellar job on the playing and recording (again) of this awesome track.. awesome and very inspiring. Yes, do an 'in depth' video on the mixing process please :) Now where's those stems? 😎🔥🔥🔥❤️
Thanks so much Marcus!! To everything, it’s not easy being vulnerable on the internet so that means so much. Stems are in the description waiting for ya!!
Seeing a parallel compression/mixing video from you would be phenomenal!! Especially with compression, i think most people do it wrong starting out but it is vital to a professional sound.
I'm really sorry to hear about your friend passing, that's absolutely awful and I hope you're getting by well (and honestly what divine intervention to actually meet the man himself congratulations!) and the cover is f*cking incredible
I lost a friend around this time a few years back, and it really is such a surreal feeling… I’m so sorry for your loss man. You’ve made an incredible tribute to him here. Thank you for sharing this
It's such a blessing for me to find a channel like this and even more because you're such a big fan of Hozier. In my case he's the reason why I bought my first guitar. it was so respectful and beautiful from your part that you made this in the memory of your friend. My best wishes for you and all around your mates and family. Cheers from México.
would love a video about common recording techniques! I understand the idea of parallel compression (I think, anyway) but I'm unclear on why the reverb sounded so much more wet in the non-parallel compression approach. Looking forward to it if you get around to it!
I'm really sorry about your friend. You show us how special he was by dedicating him this honest and real video. Thank you for your incredible effort with this video. I bet one day a worldfamous star started with your channel!
Thanks man. This hits home so hard. This year I lost my sister and his album arrived right after that. A much need place to go in such a challenging time.
If anything, I’m happy we could both lean on the same body of work during hard times :) I’m so sorry for your loss though, hope things are getting better
oh my god I just dicovered your chanel this week and I have to say I'm obsessed with these series!!!! you are so talented and you seem to get so deeply immersed on whatever you do, it's super inspiring to watch you and it brings me just so much joy... not sure if you take recommendations but, if you so I would be thrilled to see one of these about Fiona Apple, she has a super unique sound and I've never heard anything quite like her sound, idk why but I just feel like you would work so interestingly with it; (Sorry if the wording in this comment doesn't make much sense, I'm not a native english speaker.........) Thank you for making such quality content, I really apreciate it!
100% interested in deeper dives on things like parallel compression. Your videos are amazing, keep up the great work! *Edit* (was commenting halfway through): wow man! I’m sorry for your loss, I know that’s tough. Thanks for openly sharing more of the story here - and what a moment in JFK meeting Andrew!
The universe is so powerful. Meeting Andrew in that airport at that time. We can’t explain how it works but it was there for you. Call it manifesting. I call it proof to keep following your passion like a raging fire.
just discovered your channel as I'm starting my own bedroom producer journey and it is so inspiring, this specific video has been my favourite so far, thanks for putting so much love in what you do
This video is just wonderful man, im so sorry to hear about your friend.. isn't it so spiritual so cosmically insane when people like hozier just walks across your path and you're able to take something positive from such a horrible experience. You've got a fan for life brutha your editing is TOP NOTCH and i mean top notch and your musical prowess and skillset is inspiring man. I'm currently creating my first song and this video is invaluable in the nitty gritty of it all. Thank you so much
This recreation is unreal, I'm so happy I found your channel in time to see this. You put so much into this series and it shows in the end results. I'm so sorry about your friend. I'm also born in 1997, and to some extent I feel the impact of meeting Hozier and recreating this song. You will get through this. As far as the final product goes, I'm so inspired by how well it turned out. I'd love to watch a video by you about parallel processing. Also, the choir part at the end makes me crazy, Ethan went god mode and it came out so well. Congrats on an all-timer, can't wait to see more from you!
Thanks so much man :) and yeah Ethan nailed it, its absolutely insane to even attempts that choir alone and he did so well. Lots of the pitches that Hozier himself had to pitch up Ethan just hit naturally, crazy
Thanks so much! I'm definitely feeling a lot better than when I recorded this, feelings were still very raw. Regardless, appreciate you checking out the vid!
This was stunning!! I’m starting ti understand more and more of the process and techniques and terms and you explain everything so clearly!! Would love to see that video you were talking about, it would be so great to learn! I’ve been wanting to start making music for a while and these videos will be percolating in my brain until I get to actually trying recording and producing!!
Was a fantastic and inspiring video, Hozier is my all time favorite artist, I saw him in Georgia at a music festival, was spectacular, I've learned almost every song of his on guitar, every cover he's done too, like Illinois blues, and sweet thing ect, and his unreleased song Blood, I even purchased his acustic he uses a lot, the Takamine p3ny, I would love to make music like that and this video was just very motivating ✊️
Love the effort. The production, right down to the editing of the video itself was amazing, these videos have come a long way since your switch from gear reviews, I'm excited to see what else you have planned!
This has been my new favorite channel as of late. Thanks again for another great video. I’m interested in getting better at parallel compression. In the video when you show that you used 3 different compressors, were all three of those in series with each other or was each compressor on a different parallel buss? I’d imagine the latter, but I wanted to check with you. I’d definitely be interested in seeing a more in depth tutorial on parallel compression. I’ve watched some videos over the years, but I’ve never been quite satisfied by what I’ve seen as they usually just brush the surface.
Yeah it was three different parallel busses! Each one varying in intensity as well, and that's not even everything. There's another bus for snare and kick only, its pretty insane the amount of parallel channels in this routing. And I'll definitely make that video sometime in the future!
Thank you so much for making this video!! I've been looking for something exactly like this - for something covering this exact song for so long! You all did such a wonderful job arranging this!! Hozier is my biggest inspiration and hero as well, and I'm so excited for you that you got to meet him! Thank you for making this video, and I hope you're doing alright
I'm doing a lot better now, thanks so much for the kind words. And glad I could help you learn something about Movement! One of my fav tracks for sure :)
First off I'm terribly sorry for your loss, but thank you for sharing and having the courage to be that vulnerable in front of us all. And second Hozier is some kind of genius and this video might just be your best yet. The amount of work behind this is nothing short of amazing. Again thank you and keep up this amazing work!
yo I want this parallel compression video from you! that would be great to see how you achieve it in ableton. also thanks so much for these vids, so inspiring!
From one RU-vidr (and music lover) to another, I love your channel! Looking forward to seeing your continued success. I’m also very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend! -a new fan
I came here for a nerdy mixing video and left with tears in my eyes, and a nerdy video about mixing. I’m sorry to hear about your friend. Hozier’s music has been healing for many of us in many ways. I hope he gets to see this video one day. ❤ quality content. 🙌🏻
i am so happy for you, to meet your idol in such an important moment! you really nailed this one, it was beautiful!! If Hozier hear this one, i am sure he will be proud of how well you reproduced his song, but i can only talk for myself and you/it moved me! Thanks for all of your work.
Wow! It took me about 10 minutes to put a comment in here, right after watching the whole video. I believe apart from the awesome cover track and all the efforts you have put into making this, there is an artistic layer, deeper, in how you told the story which to my eyes, it out shines the whole thing. The video is just wonderful! It has been directed and treated like a masterpiece! Of course as a musician and a producer, I started to watch the video because I was looking for the information in the title, Like I seriously wanted to know how to create that sound in a bed room and on a budget but, man! I found myself lost in the story right after a few minutes. That's it! It's wonderful!
This is so incredible, I just started studying a little bit about production, I've learned a lot, thank you very much. Mainly because these videos take such a long time to produce lol please continue
I have seen all of your videos and "liked" each one of them. wish I could do more. you deserve a massive following for the information you provide on this channel.
Firstable, I'm so sorry for your loss. This video is incredible and the result was pretty impressive. And yes, I would watch the extended version of this with all the behind the scenes, deleted scenes, cats and everything. Hope the almighty algorithm picks it up.
I've never really listened to Hozier before, you might've just changed that, but boy that performance gave me goosebumps. I think your friend would be very proud of what you did here!
Amazing job on the video congratulations! Very sorry to hear about your friend. Hozier’s music was medicine for me during a lonely time in my early 20s. His music actually inspired me to get on RU-vid and make some tutorials. Your channel is inspiring me to get back into RU-vid full force! Also got to jam with Jordan many times back in the day he is truly incredible player. Cheers brother keep doing what your doing!
I’m always amazed by these videos. It’s so impressive how much time and energy you put into figuring out just what goes into a song, and simultaneously how accessible you make it seem. I don’t have the majority of the things/people you used in this video-I own three microphones, two guitars, one amplifier, one bass, I use GarageBand, and I play and sing all parts myself. But even beyond the expensive gear that I don’t have the funds for at the moment, there’s still a lot of recording and mixing tips that are useful to me. Like, I’d never heard of parallel compression. And I never realized that a dynamic mic was better for loud vocals. Those things are going to serve me VERY well on my next project. You and I seem to have very similar tastes in music, and I tend to wear my influences on my sleeve in a pretty big way. So being able to learn about the way my favorite artists’ songs are made is genuinely super helpful for my own music. Beyond wanting to sound “good” or “marketable” or whatever, I want to make music that sounds like the music I love, so that people like me have more music to love. Holy shit this is such a long comment, I’m so sorry. If you take one thing away from my wall of text, let it be this: Thank you so much for these videos, please keep making them as long as they’re sustainable for you to do.
If I could be like a tenth of the artist Hozier is, I’d be happy. I’m basically just looking for all the media of and about him to glean whatever I can. Really loved hearing your story ❤ and so cool you got to meet him in that moment when you needed it. Great video and cover!
This is amazing. I also wasn't expecting to tear up at an AudioHaze video but what a lovely tribute to your friend. On top of a beautifully produced video and song. Sleep well earned.
This is incredible. Great channel for recording/production outside of my typical beat-making zone. I've collected some real things like bass guitar. bongos, mics, etc I am an infant recordist but this is so inspiring. Peace & Blessings! 🕊✨
This video moved my intellectually , physically and emotionally. Everything is beautiful. Thank you for the love and attention you put in everything, It just boost’s my passion❤️🔥
As a musician I appreciate the effort to recreate the sound, but the production quality of this video has me shaken to my core. The visuals inspire me as a content creator.
Wow, giving each of the stems, the mixed version, the unmixed version etc is incredibly helpful for us producers to try and recreate the sound. Thank you for your dedication in making this video and I hope you are feeling even just a little bit better now
17:45 Very production noob question here-I think what I'm taking from this is that a dynamic mic gives better room rejection than a condenser. Is that the right takeaway? (Also, man, I'm sorry about your friend. Gone too fucking soon.)
Great video dude! I doubt I would be able to record anything like that anytime soon but I just caught myself watching a second video in you channel after the Tiny Desk one caught my eye. BTW that touching moment of you running into Hozier is just another proof there is God. You needed him so desperately in that moment, so God made you cross paths. If you needed someone else probably one way or another that person would have crossed your path as well. God bless!
Hey, that was really beautiful and I was not expecting to get emotional, but yeah. Well done, super informative. Didn't hold hands. This is great. I love material for the intermediate to advanced crowd. It inspires me to try new stuff. I have a suggestion for a quick topic to cover from this. You said a few times that dynamic mics get less room sound, and I've heard that a lot, but it's been my experience that it's more the size of the diaphragm and the amount of compression. I did a quick google and I've not seen a readily available demo of this. At least, not one that came up easily. Wanna test the theory? I'd appreciate it. Again, not even a Hozier fan, really. I just respect him and came here to learn, and very quickly subscribed.
Hey ! Love this video ! Btw in the video you spoke about Nord preset to do the organ, Grand piano part, and I wondered (because i'm looking for a piano too) if you finally did the key part on your midi synth with a Nord emulator or on the red Nord Piano of the pro pianist in the video ? (I don't get it 😅) Have a wonderfull day !
Amazing video, great insights and technical challenges. Thanks for sharing such a meaningful moment, too - it’s a true testament to why all this music nerd matters most to us, to move people
13:16 Constructive comment on this masterpiece incoming. Noting that its non-parallel compression instead of no parallel compression might be useful for the beginners in the audience. Compression is notoriously hard to hear after all. Great, great video.
Of all songs/singers this one in particular was such a bold and difficult choice, that, regardless of the results, it deserves a lot of respect. Not only the process is so well documented but the result is incredible - I still can't believe how huge and beautiful the final part sounds. There is so much in that video... thank you for making it and please keep going, this is a real inspiration!
Ah wow thank you! It definitely was a crazy challenge, but it paid off for sure. Cool to show that working in a home studio doesn't have to mean smaller, limited productions
