I cut my teeth on '98 K2 Backyard Bob's stock flat setup. I only switched to anti-rockers because I didn't know what those little hexagon things were in the blade hole where the wheel axel goes through. The fat side down raises the wheel and vise versa. I unwittingly put the fat part to the top. It causes the skate to rock, because the middle wheels were lower than the outside.

Man this episode takes me back! I started with the rollerblade brand skates you showed at the beginning, I think I just swapped the wheels out for an anti-rocker, then to K2’s, then the Roces at the end. I’m really wanting to get back into to blading at almost 40!

anti rocker was a thing way way before juice blocks, anti rock was huge because of the frames not being wide enough in the middle. but then in the late ninety's they invented frames where you could move your middle wheels out. so then flat became popular because you could run flat and still grind well. then came freestyle frames and juice blocks. in 2001 when i stop skating because of school i had been running anti rocker for 5 years by then and juice block and freestyle frames weren't invented yet.

So, I started around 2009-2010, and I seem to remember those Kizer Elements being an option from day 1 for me. They were so far ahead of the curve, especially with the release date. I don't remember anyone riding the Rollerblade Switch frame flat, pretty sure it was a 2012 release. The biggest thing with those frames was, in conjunction with the Rollerblade Solo boot design and having two separate soul plates, you could ride 72 mm on the outside with antirocker, while the frame felt lower. A lot of companies changed up their soul design afterwards to have that little groove for a taller wheel afterwards. I am sure some people skated the switch frame flat, but I know a lot of people were excited about 72 mm outside wheels. I actually cut some of the plastic on some Xsjado Mook frames and some grooves in my Razors Genesys souls with a bench grinder trying to emulate that feel; think I got up to fitting 68 mm wheels in those mooks (now the Kizer type X frame, same mold). Sorry, I'm one of those freestyle until I die and still ride freestyle. I just have short enough feet that having only two wheels doesn't affect my turning as much as other folks, so the payoff isn't as great for me with flat. I do remember trying two different flat setups though: rode the Kaltik frames when they first released as I just had to try that wheelbite protection. Great frames, just such a weird groove on ledges/curves. My first "aggressive" skates were some Roces 62 Impalas, which came flat and were horribly out of date when I started riding (those boots had to have been around 10 years old). But, with no shops around and no one to explain the differences between skates to me, I just searched for the cheapest "aggressive" skate I could find and happened on a pair of those things used. When I finally moved on to modern boots, it was SUCH an upgrade haha.

Surprised you didn't mention the good old Able frames in there somewhere. Back in the early to mid 2000's those had an H-block shaped more like a triangle and gave wheel bite protection for a flat setup. Would be cool if someone kept on making that design. I think it had the perception of being too heavy if I remember right but such a good frame. Tory Treseder had them on his pro Rollerblade models. I always thought it was weird Salomon never put them on the pro Vinny Minton skates, none of their pro models actually ever had their riders' frames :/ . Now people I see talking about how great Salomon was but back in those days I can remember having the ST80s and basically everyone agreed at that time Salomon's were not that great and a lot of people hated the frames, you had to mod the boots to have grind space, people hated the widebody on them. Able basically disappeared soon after they released their freestyle frames and Kizer was starting to come out with tons of different stuff like the M-type and Suspension frame.
@BacktoBlading
@BacktoBlading 6 лет назад
Able wasn’t a flat frame in my mind for some reason. I have a set here, and they definitely have a bit of the wheel protection. You’re right.

Oysi frame just need to match with more cheating boot. The boot plays a biggest role, especially topsides. Boot with higher cuffs, stiiff cuffs and small soulplate, less wing soleplates is required more effort to topsides espeically aging people like us

I started blading in 1995 I used Lightning’s first, then the TRS model and finally the Tarmacs . I first started aggressive using fattys (wheels not the K2) they came out with a few aggressive wheels by late 1996. Lightning’s are still my favorite skates. I’m 42 now and just ordered myself a pair of gawds Prado boots. I used to ride flat then anti rocker when I moved to the first xsjados for a brief moment in 2002. I prefer having 4 wheels for more control leading up to the grind if that makes sense. I’m getting my old out of shape butt back into rollerblading. Wish me luck.

Most of the guys that seriously throw down in videos are skating anti rocker it looks like, like Broskow. Maybe they got both. I do it's really not that expensive to have both frames. Plus once those flat frames get worn if you skate street ledges. You're going to have to make those anti rocker or get new flats. That's what I did I just turned my worn out old flat frame into an anti rocker set up.

The reason the Slimline are awful is (at least the version 1) has a really wide and shallow groove, with a big split. The shallowness and lack of wheel coverage promotes wheel bite. I use to skate the non-UFS 50/50 flat on the Julio Thrones and they were great. The Adapt Symetric wheel spacing and groove remind me of the old non-UFS 50/50’s, but are definitely a step up. Even wheel spacing, so that you actually get the real feel of flat skating, with no wheel bite! The frame wall thickness and angles of the groove are so dialed in on the Symetrics. You owe it to yourself to give them a try!!!
@BacktoBlading

Firstly, those Kizer elements look absolutely gorgeous! I’m quite fond of a loud yet classy design for my blades, not saying a good old fashion stealth (all black) is bad mind you. Gold and white, mmm mmm! To add to your video, as a person who rode Kaltik v1 flats, they are great. Although at the time I was using them I was but very very new I can appreciate their design. It allows for a 60 across the board. By my guess, they were really designed for coping and rails as the h-block is very deep thus when you lock that coping you are really locked solid. Take my word with a grain of salt as this is my retrospective look at it and at that point, once again, I could hardly even lock a soul grind. They are lighter than the GC formula1 as well. As for your wondering of a bullet profile, UC Werbeski’s are 59 bullets.
