I still cant put my finger on what makes your videos feel so wildly well produced and professional without it losing any charm. It feels like the perfect middle ground between RU-vid and a TV show
@@MarkandMarie If there's anyone I'd trust to guide me through Japan... it probably wouldn't be Natsuki, but I'd let him do it anyway, because it'd probably be quite fun regardless.
You have to love how Ryotaro has completely embraced British sarcasm as a part of his English speaking persona. Regardless of what one believe about the paranormal there is definitely an atmosphere that surrounds a place that multiple people claim to be haunted or spiritual. Like a collective idea built by multiple minds building a tension and weight in the air.
Well I've never been there so I can't really say for myself, but don't you think those places that people say "feel spiritual" could just be called that because one person one time thought they felt it was spiritual and told somebody else, or they say it just because they know somebody died there, and eventually people come there expecting it to be spiritual? So in the end I feel like people just placebo themselves into thinking it's gonna feel a certain way, so then when they get there they think they really do feel like that. ~:~
@UC7Wb38VTLBIIdZyS2gx05Pw Yeah I respect that a lot of people wrote down their experiences and stuff and I'm not saying they're necessarily "lying", but I just think that a lot of it might be that they're expecting something to happen so they kind of imagine it, like if they hear a little noise or think they see something in the corner of their eye, stuff that anywhere else they would take as totally normal or think they could have just imagined it, they use the story and reputation of the area to explain it, even though anywhere else it could have a natural explanation. I mean I'm just saying that about places that are said to be haunted in general; I don't really know what people wrote in the book in this place specifically. Also, the thing with the person thinking someone was standing on them was probably just sleep paralysis. ~:~
That’s exactly what it is. As someone who’s had it happen many, many times that description was spot on. If you’re not used to it then it can be quite scary and seen paranormal. It’s also usually accompanied by visions of something sinister. I’ve learned to just ignore the sinister stuff swirling around at the edge of my vision and coming towards me. A tip for you though when you’re stuck in sleep paralysis: pick a digit on your body and do your best to move it. You will not be able to scream or anything. Just calm down and try to move a toe or finger. As soon as you do, your body will fully wake up and unlock.
the letter form the guy who couldn't move and felt pressure on the chest sounds like it was sleep paralysis which on a place like this would be extra terrifying.
Do you know when one really is around a ghost they get paralyzed.. Like they can't speak, yell or move. So maybe someone was around? (Sorry for bad English)
@@miffyishappy_ pretty sure there are plenty of people who claim to have been around a ghost who were not paralyzed like that. This particular situation however sounds exactly like sleep paralysis, which is pretty well documented.
there is legend of a supernatural being that does exactly what was described (I only know the German name for it though) and it is more or less the same as sleep paralysis along with some things that people naturally can feel/experience when having sleep paralysis. So it is not only well documented, but before there was a scientific documentation, it was also documented in experiences with this supernatural being. It is a rather common experience at "haunted" places though. I think it is very interesting if people who have never heard of this before experience that and describe it.
@@JackyCola92 yes that little devil that sits on your chest. I do know that. I think that because of the state of mind of the people that go and sleep there it makes sleep paralysis more possible to happen and that shouls explain these strange happenings.
Bruh, that would be MARKETING GENIUS. I really am angry this isn't a thing now lmao, wanna go halfsies on a haunted hotel together so we can do this now? What kid are we gonna hire?
Can you imagine being a 6 year old Japanese boy's spirit and some brit dude starts scolding at you in a language that you've probably never even heard of
@@madhavpatil1206 You've never met an angry Brit then. They're a pain in the posterior under normal circumstances, let alone when they get angry about something, like when hearing the word "Brussels".
I love the effort that went into cinematic camera work in this episode. Like the close ups of atmospheric objects, the playing around with focus while moving with the camera. This quality felt nothing short of anything you would see on tv for a documentary. Ryotaro is a match made in heaven in this too.
The grudge and the ring taught me to not mess with Japanese ghosts, you’re a brave man. When he read the note from someone who couldn’t move in bed and felt weight on their chest, that described a classic case of sleep paralysis, that might be what they experienced, but maybe it was a ghost lol
After watching James May, Our Man in Japan, I was reminded how good your content is Chris. Your team and you provide television-quality videos on a regular basis which are fun, informative and all in all great entertainment. Thank you, and be wary of Ristorro
You’re not supposed to enter a shrine after the sun is down because shrines are the home/area of the enshrined(god, spirit) thus you should not enter a shrine under these circumstances or else it is would not leave good results. Plus, since the ancient days, the time period around 2AM(丑三つ時) is considered as the most dangerous time which non-humans(mostly bad spirits) are most active. Please be careful. *edited 5/24/2020
If I remember correctly, it is the same in the West. 2-3am is "witching hour", when spirits are active. My personal superstitious beliefs are that there's always the "what if" scenario; what if I stay at a haunted house and just happen to be the one guy possessed by a demon? Because of this, I'm always careful not to disrespect spirits, even if I'm not entirely convinced they exist. Thanks for the heads up about shrines though.
Here in Southeast Asia our witching hour is around dusk, typically 7-8pm. On this hour, it's said that you shouldn't be outside your homes or even fall asleep at this hour.
Hussein Abbas no matter where you go another Muslim telling everyone about the Jinn again. Whatever your. Prophet spouted has nothing to do with Japan’s ghost culture be respectful it’s a little boy leave it alone. I’m so tired of Muslims pushing their opinions on others this has nothing to do with jinn and Islam !
@@ninjasurf1733 He was just contibuting his own personal experiences to the conversation. The people talking about their countries' witching hours also have nothing to do with the japanese witching hour. The only reason you're so up in arms is because he mentioned islam. If you have an issue with muslims, you should make friends with some and get rid of your preconceptions.
That was my first thought. If you are actually a good paranormal investigator you try to rule out as many scientific explanations as possible before believing something is paranormal. Anytime I hear an account that sounds like sleep paralysis I tend to immediately dismiss it.
@@crashfan11 yes it's a legitimate thing. However, not paranormal in nature. One of my friends has had some absolutely terrifying sleep paralysis experiences. They can apparently feel very vivid and real. Like being a captive in your own body while surreal horrors surround you.
@@Jestrath exactly. Had a friend who said he had sleep paralysis when he was a kid and some dude would open the door to his parents room then get really close to his face and then leave. No the guy didn't live there, yes he slept with his parents, and yes the guy was super pale
You and Ryotoro described perfectly a phenomenon known as "sleep paralysis". People commonly feel paralysed, can't move and many people feel a heavy weight on their chest due to the paralysis. Because your mind is still in a dream state you experience hallucinations.
My experiences with "Sleep Paralysis" usually had something to do with whatever my brain was cooking up sitting on my chest/torso. Eventually the visual aspect went away but I could still feel that strange pressure on my chest and the infinite weight of my limbs every time it happened. Whether I would see anything or not when i was finally able to jolt awake my heart would race and it would take me at least an hour to get back asleep, often for it to just happen again. I really want to go to this Inn at some point in the future.
I was gonna say typical sleep paralysis. When you're dreaming your brain disables your motor functions so you don't actually enact the actions you're dreaming about. But it doesn't always work... Sometimes you'll unconsciously enact what you're dreaming - sleep walking. And sometimes you'll become conscious while still dreaming, but be paralysed. It's happened to me many times. You get used to it. The trick is to just realise it's just a dream and just relax. It's just a brain lag glitch. It's probably the reason many people believe in the paranormal. Because it feels real in the moment, and they don't have any understanding in brainology.
@@MajorMalfunction I have a huge interest in dreams so weirdly enough I kind of enjoy sleep paralysis, mainly afterwards when I think about what happened
I frecuently have lucid dreams and rarely sleep paralysis(mostly when I'm under stress)but some of the sleep paralysis were lucid too and it feels so horrible. I just want to sleep normally and rest well xDD
@@yamiko8 Well, I'm not any expert so I can't offer any professional advice, but when it happens to me I just tell them to fuck off and leave me alone, and roll over. But if you actually have trouble sleeping, you could maybe seek the help of a local sleeping lab. They stick a bunch of wires on you and video you while you sleep.
That is a lovely myth, at a time when child mortality was high distraught families could continue to 'care' for the lost child and believe in it's living presence among them.
Am I losing my mind?! I literally hear a child shrieking with laughter at around 4:59 ? Does anyone else or is it just sound effects or have I gone completely insane.
I WWOOFed in Kyushu (basically a farmstay) and my room was haunted. My first night there I had a dream that a Japanese person stood over me and looked down at me while I slept with a curious look on their face. In the morning, I wondered passingly if my dream was actually what happened. It would make sense that a ghost would be perplexed by a western face. A couple days later, the 7 yr old kid pointed at the closet and said in Japanese "you know there is a ghost over there," like it was no big deal. I grilled him on it and he said that he had seen it and that the ghost was a kid. The rest of the family got wind of our conversation and everyone started freaking out! One of the other kids told me a story about how he had seen a white mist one night go into the room and he took a picture of it with his DS. He showed me the picture, and you couldn't for sure say it was a ghost, but there was definitely a white misty shape in the photo. The family gave me dishes of salt to place around my futon to prevent the ghost from messing with me while I slept. The grandmother of the house was in her 90s and left offerings at the family altar every day, and I was tempted to ask her if any children had died in the family, but I never did.
My thoughts exactly. I wonder how this is connected to ghosts so often. Is it that ghosts cause sleep paralysis, or that through suggestion and myth, the ghost lives on through the minds of those who sleep?
@@aggressivedriver9109 Okay so? Clearly you do not understand. Sleep paralysis is brought on chemically and biologically and yet, in this case, the spirit of the child appears.
Yep, the description of the supernatural phenomena were just such obvious descriptions of sleep paralysis. Can't have been a fun experience for the inn visitors, sleep paralysis sucks, doubly so if you don't know what is even happening.
Fans: How many times are you gonna make a video on Wagyu Beef? Chris Broad: Yes P.s love this video, keep going on cool adventures to acquire the best steak
Hi Chris, lovely video as always! I have a suggestion, could you please have a map with your location when you travel? It makes it easier to grasp where you're at as well as the relative distances
Also, completely unrelated, but I have the feeling that somewhere deep in the web there is some Chris x Ryotaro Yaoi fan fiction none of us is ready for.
Dear Joshua, I am a woman of culture! (I also, once upon a time, was an introverted teen with access to internet.) I am certainly not fantsasing about it now (although you shouldn't fetish-shame people :p) but the love/hate relationship in beautiful Japanese scenery does vividly bring back the storylines the genra relies on so heavily
Do you hear someone laughing creepily near your ears in your sleep paralysis though? Was there a child standing near you on your bed and scared you so much that you pushed him away? Yes it was a boy. I can still remember it. Have you had a 'dream' where you were floating around in your own house but the rooms look like they've been abandoned for years and then you fell back into your own body where you were sleeping and woke up? Because I experienced all of these. I don't think it was sleep paralysis. I've had sleep paralysis twice too and they felt different. I'd differentiate these from a 'regular' dream because in a regular dream, the settings/premises are normally outside the house I'm living in, but these 'dreams' all happened exactly in the room/house I am/was currently living in. Tbf if it's a just figment of my imagination, I'm more scared of a female ghost than a male ghost, but the one I saw was a young boy.
@@timduncan9372 i've had people standing and walking all over my bed, felt the wind with door and window completely shut, and heard someone call me alone in the house. It's just your brain allucinanting (in the process of dreaming) when not completely asleep
@@timduncan9372 Well I'm not going to discredit any of your experiences since the scope of our perception & understanding of reality is only Human after all. BUT. You can (and most probably will) experience hallucinations during sleep paralysis since your body is essentially unaware that you're conscious and all the processes we gloss over whilst unconscious become vividly apparent in this state. If you aren't aware of this you will become uneasy or afraid and the hallucinations will reflect that fear. Most people experience Ghosts, Alien abductions this way, or the older stories of old hags sitting on your chest or black dogs approaching you with red eyes. . My personal experiences with sleep paralysis are wildly different since I was 100% aware of what could happen because I was looking into lucid dreaming and one of the shortcuts is forcing sleep paralysis (basically lay down and do not move at all for a long time, not recommended) what I experienced was pretty off the wall. Someone whispering jibberish in my ear. A babies arm dangling down across my face. Some guy running in place with different color after images. An unrealistically huge spider running across my wall. . Like I said though, anything can happen and I don't know what it was you truly experienced but I can at least attest to the fact that sleep paralysis is most certainly a trip.
I saw a goat with long horns with human body watching me eyes to eyes when I was sleep paralysis. I think I was in half sleep and my room lamp are off. What the duck is that?
Wait. Wait, wait wait. Just hold on a second. Rysottoro went from "incredible chauffeur" to "reasonably priced driver"? How did he lose his high ranking in the first place?
For anyone who can see "Ghosts" or "Spirits", Japan has lots of them everywhere. Just be careful when you can see them, they will talk to you or bother you too.
Okay but the sound Chris made when Ryotaru was reading from the guests' book and he very innocently said *"Thank you for playing with me last night"* was glorious, because I feel like he was the only one in the room to get the (perhaps unintended) joke and that's a shame.
During my first time in Japan, my group and I were to stay in a house in Kyoto. In one of the bedrooms were a few of creepy kokeshi dolls, which we turned facing outside the window. The house gave us really bad vibes so we left. On my way out, I realised I must have dropped my jacket that was on my bag. I went back up in the bedroom and not only did I find my jacket but also my Nintendo DS that was INSIDE the bag and the kokeshi dolls facing inside...i dashed out of that house without a seconds notice.
I have enough first hand experience to know that the paranormal is very real. You could look at as a blessing or a curse that I've had as many encounters as I have. I probably would have stayed in that place for sense of sheer fascination. Still doesn't mean I don't get a little scared though. I'm usually more fascinated than scared in those situations. It depends on how intense the activity is. If I see shadow people, physical apparitions and things flying off shelves by themselves its pretty exciting. Also terrifying lol
@@Jestrath I was the last person to enter and leave the room with the kokeshi dolls, and I swear they were facing outwards. We didn't hear anything while we were there. But the place was in an old part of kyoto in an area where there used to be a tannery, so most probably it was a low end area in days gone by. I am fascinated by the supernatural, but not up close with it.
@@animebernard4747 Now THAT sounds like an actual paranormal experience!! In Chris's case one bird toy falling off the display is really nothing but coincidence. If the *entire* display was suddenly on the floor in the same positions as on the table or whatever they were set up on though....

looks like Chris' fear of a night with Ryotaro is scarier than the ghost kid...and we viewers dont know his pain, OR maybe Ryotaro is the kid who bugs Chris for life since he started teaching in Japan....spooky #FreeChris
16:20 - I don't think Ryotaro was glaring. In fact, this may have been the first time Chris has given him a compliment which sent him into a minor state of shellshock.
At the end of the episode, you said you are planning on buying a car soon. I'm a car enthusiast in the US and would love to see your car buying experience in Japan. How you decided on a car, what the prices and registration are for different types, is there negotiating at the dealerships, etc. Keep up the good work! My fiance and I visited Japan last year and had a great time largely Thanks to your channel. Thank you!
Great episode, Chris. Your production quality is going through the roof. That coastline looks a lot like Storms River in South Africa. Definitely worth a visit if you're ever in SA.
What an interesting and informative travel video! Most of the time I'm bored to pieces when watching most RU-vidr's travel videos and or blogs, but not yours. Your's was so funny and entertaining and beautifully shot, bravo to your camera man and well done on the editing. So, thank you so much for sharing this with us. Another great video as always Chris, it never ceases to amaze me how far your channel has come from the good ol days. We all appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos and the genuine humor (so many others attempts at humor feel forced) you're able to provide while also showcasing so much interesting stuff. One of the few channels that I will watch every video from begining to end without skipping or getting bored and clicking off.
I'm going to like the video and finish the ad in the video because I'm too scared to watch this rn at 1 am in the morning. Although, I'm fairly certain Chris will liven up the tension with his sarcastic quips.
Have you seen James May’s japan series? I really recommend it. Also you should really track down the legend of a tour guide, Yujiro. He would get on so will with Natsuki!
I thought it was pretty crap tbh, they tried to cram too much into the series imo. So we saw a lot of stuff, but nothing really in-depth. Considering there were some legitimately interesting things on there, it's a shame they didn't spend more time.
