Today I wanted to discuss why I believe Offworld Industries is working on a Vehicle Combat Overhaul for Squad. I wanted this video to also act as a discussion for the future of Squads vehicle's and really dive deep into the thoughts and opinions of the Squad Community.

I personally feel like giving vehicles APS isn't going to stop them from chilling on a hill 4km away from their infantry blasting logis leaving Mutaha mains. If anything I'd say that its a net win for that playstyle given an APS functionally makes them more resistant to LAT/HAT. The root causes of what makes armour players play in this way needs to be addressed by lowering respawn timers, ticket loss, and adding things like javelins that punish statically sitting tanks on terrain features and sniping instead of shooting and scooting around a flag with their infantry.

I feel like that you should force tanks and armor to be fighting from a distance instead of rushing in. It is only logical that you should make yourself as hard as possible to hit so stay far away and shoot with your super big optic. I wrote in this comment section how i would like a war thunder style damage model system, where APS counts and so using heat or tandem counts too, where you shoot counts also more then ever and maybe you might also give crewmen the ability to die if they get hit from shrapnel inside their vehicle or get incapacitated. This will make them more cautious as right now they have too much advantages over lats with suppression. Still, with my idea, a good armor crew that shoots from far away will be almost untouched and will force the enemy AT kits to expose themselves for high range shots or get closer and use flanking manoeuvres.

Unfortunately in any game such as squad with a limited map size or certain points that are fix for a game/round/raid are bound to be camped. look at the changes in NATO doctrine since the gwot era the move away from semi permanent fobs to mobile logistics hubs is to prevent almost the same thing in real life from insurgents / artillery. The ability for a mobile unit to attack a static point will all ways be an issue. The way to fix any of this issue is to amass an over powering force onto the unit harassing the position, though it is irritating this is one of the things squad excels at the ability to cooperate and crush an enemy. I think the way around it is for a play stile that counters it which is up to the community and squad leaders especially to utilise the assets they have. As much as any upgrade can give to an opposing team a better leader/player can out wit it. after all camping is a legit but not fun tactic. After all squad is a milsim and in reality the fight isn't all ways fair its the. I understand that the people want a fun game but the features of reality are bound to make their way into a simulation of reality.

No APS on mass produced BMP-3, only on prototypes. But yes, the T-90A uses it, and it would be really cool if it worked, and it seems like it will in the future (but not Arena, Shtora, the ,,soft'' one which does not destroy projectiles, Arena was used only on prototypes). Also this system on T-90A works only on older atgms, but it still would be cool against factions like ''militia'' and ''Insurgents''. Additionally, the Shtora system warns you when it detects a laser beam (for example, if someone "measures" the distance to you using a laser rangefinder) and notifies the crew about it. Also it would be cool to have damage model more like in Squad 44'.

Sadly i think the Arena APS is only on the ARMATA platform not on any other but I'm pretty sure the T-90M,90A and T-80 series tanks had laser warning receivers which can help if you don't know if you're being targeted or not.

There is a mod that sorta implements VCO called SquadV. It has thermals, FCS, crew hitboxes and in-depth damage models. (Tank can only be lost if ammo-racked or if a fuel fire/engine fire goes on for too long). However, the mod is only used on Russian and Chinese servers. AFAIK, there are no English-speaking servers that run it. The quality is quite also hit-and-miss as it IS a community-made mod (Most vehicles get FCS, but a fair number of the mod's older assets lack it. Damage models are on the whole really good right now, but there was a period when some vehicles such as the CV90-40MM were unkillable). In terms of gameplay, it still feels pretty similar to Vanilla squad. The main difference is that there is a lot more ambushing and sniping than in Vanilla armoured gameplay. Since an Abrams or T-72 can be one-hit-killed by a single sabot shot, people prefer to lay ambushes and play passively over pushing. The FCS also makes longer-ranged sniping on maps such as Tallil extremely viable. IFVs are also weaker than in Vanilla, as a second of AP autocannon fire can kill the crew (if aimed right, of course), rendering the IFV crewless, even if the fuel/engine/ammo is unharmed.

Russian “Arena” Hardkill APS (shooting incoming projectile out of the air) has never been in service. T-90A has Shtora-1 Softkill APS, those red eyes disrupt older non-wireguided ATGMs, and Shtora-1 also includes a laser warning system, that should detect and tell the crew from what direction they’re getting lazed.

Squad 44 still has the absolute most premier armor system in any game i've played, makes learning weaknesses an actual skill rather than point and click a general area

I don't think they will go very simulative, but I think they will use the unique mechanics of Post Scritum vehicles (squad44), better manoeuvrability of vehicles in general, hitboxes of passengers inside armoured vehicles and more

Your opinion is so relatable to me lmao Been playing since 2017 and it's been so much fun now. I'm having more fun in squad now than in like, 2018, where my brandead aim could not click heads faster. But I came from a more 0-7 kd to an impressive average 3-4 kd ratio. Supression now compensates for my bad aim and gives me time to aim properly and have higher chance of survival if I shoot first.

Arena would be a very odd choice for squad, since it's not been fielded in actual combat before and has never seen full scale production. Not to mention it's specifications are classified, so implementing it would be guesswork. Shtora-1 seems the likely APS for them to model. It's a passive infrared dazzler that can disrupt certain older missiles (not javelin). It's equipped to most T-90As irl, as well as visually on the T-90A in-game, and is quite well documented.

Oh okay! I wasn't aware of this. I was under the impression that Shtora was only a disruptor against laser guided rockets from ATGM's. Either way it'll be interesting to see what they do in the future :)

Rectification : the T90A doesn't use the Arena APS, it uses the Shtora-1. While the Arena detects and activly intercepts incoming projectiles as they're in flight, the Shtora-1 just passivly disrupts beam guided missiles and laser rangefinders, but doesn't intercept any projectile. (wich means Shtora-1 is useless against wire guided missiles, tank shells, or RPG) The Arena system is used on the T90M tank, wich is a vastly modernised T90A. Shtora-1 seems like a very plausible addition for the game in the near future, and it could pave the way for more APS such as Arena, Trophy or Iron Fist to be added later. By the way, the T72B3 doesn't have any installed APS system. But some footage from the Russo-Ukraine conflict reports that some (probably very little) T72B3M (modernisation of the T72B3) had an Arena-M APS installed. However, since we don't have the T72B3M in squad, we won't see any APS installed on the T72, making it a very vulnerable vehicule compared to others. But even if we had the T72B3M in game, it probably won't receive any APS either, because from the footage we have, it looks like a very specific field modification, that is not applied to each and every T72B3M.

I can't wait for them to re-make the vehicle system and gameplay. I always love the idea of doing vehicle crew in squad but haven't for a while because of the exact things you mention where most people just want to drive to the edge of the map and spend the whole game trying to snipe logis instead of directly helping infantry in any meaningful way.

Add being able for tanks to go through trees/bushes but to slightly damage them if they do it alot. And add OTA Bradley ATGM which will do halfway ammorack a tank

I think thermals and FCSs for vehicles would have much bigger impact. It would create much more interesting power dynamics between factions with older gear vs factions with modern gear.

T-90A has shtora soft kill APS. Its those IR lights on the front of the turret.

T72 and T90 are different and allows for a huge variation between both of them making them both2 useful, in a VCO the T72 will have roughly the same armor profile, all be it not protecting against modern ATGM's in some areas compared to T90 but the tradeoff is that the tank has Sosna U fire control system which gives it thermal imagers and automatic tracking, while the T90A with turret armor aswell as the APS (Btw T90A does not get Arena M it gets Shtora which jams laser guided missiles only and does not shoot down anything you likely got confused by the T90M a modernized T90A which does come with an upgrade package with Arena M APS although it is rarely fielded) while sacraficing the Sosna - U optics for a more basic fire control system without thermal imagers. The Abrams would also get a missile counter measure aswell in the way of jaming incoming laser guided missiles. For context if what i describe becomes true most and asuming the "war thunder" armor model is not added, most tanks would play the exact same way as their countermeasure would only be useful at long range against laser guided munitions, and their optics allowing for even longer range engagements. The problem with the T90A being added is that the Shtora APS only works on laser guided munitions, so facing nato missiles which are typically TOW's would render Shtora useless as the missile is wire guided. I hope that cleared up some stuff and I hope your chanel grows further :)

I feel that things like FCS and APS can be implemented and it can be balanced out/tuned by making armour more realistic for example: crew being taken out by penetrating rounds, javelins and other guided anti tank weapons being added etc. If armour crews feared being hit more they would have to stick with infantry who can help them out. Right now being hit by AT isnt too big of a deal unless its a HAT kit. worts case scenario you get tracked and you repair it, an experienced crew, even if they get tracked, will probably be in a good position to hold off enemy infantry and repair. Playing near infantry would be rewarding both because it would be hard to ambush you and nearby infantry/habs can help you get your crew back in the game. Ofc this wont work if AT cant take you out from long distances and you arent vulnerable to other guided missiles (for example maybe from helicopters). Having FCS, APS and thermals will make it so tanks are able to spot and prevent attacks by infatry as long as they arent getting flanked or ambushed while they can no longer sit on a hill 2km away camping the enemy main.

t90a uses the shtora-1, not arena-m. shtora is more of a jammer. arena-m is more of a trophy thing where it shoots its own projectile to intercept whatever it needs to intercept

I think the idea for vehicle combat over haul is sorely need to rebalance power between infantry and vehicles. However, I don't think a VCO will necessarily force the type of close combined arms play style wanted by some in the community. Rather, I think a more viable solution could be to implement radio ranges to for squad and command radios. Forcing the necessity of sticking with and around your squad for intel as well as punishing those who don't with the lack there of. A counter point to this would be if squads do end up split, like they sometimes do. How can they possibly coordinate, away from your squad leader. Easy, I say use local communications and try to enlist the help of the team around you to try and link back up with your squad leader. As silly as this idea sounds I do truly think the limitation on radios with a range will increase the over use of communication between squads as the intel is now much more limited. I know this isn't a "fix all" for squads not working together but it is an idea, and one I think should be discussed more in-depth.

I don't think hard-kill aps would be a thing in the game until much later, like patch 15.0 levels of later. (Also arena-m is still in testing and mostly tested on t-72b3, t-90a in game only has soft kill shtora - basically an infrared jammer) (Arena-E is an export version of Arena-M) They'll probably make soft kill aps on t-90a that will confuse kornets etc (maybe tows, but that's up for debate since I don't remember how exactly they work) and new bradley will get like x30 zoom and keep it at that. But I would like to see an overhaul to health and driving of vehicles, that would do good for squad

Best vehicle combat in an multiplayer FPS was Red Orchestra 2. Hands down, it never was matched.

2:29 speaking from personal experience of playing squad 44 before and after that games armor overhaul i really dont like the idea of having your crew get killed in a tank, its really frustrating to recover your tank moving all the way from main to get to it. also manual gear shifting felt really bad in that game. me personally as somebody who mostly plays armor in squad, i feel like its a bit to OP right now especially tanks with the recent ATGM nerf and ICO. a good tank crew can once they deal with the enemy tank, really dominate the enemy team and get 50 kills. factions like the turks also suffer a lot not having a ton of HATs and bad armor. i would like to see some basic features like looking out of your hatch and tanks being less tanky but costing less tickets and a lower timer which would help with making armor players more aggressive. stuff like laser range finder with automatic zeroing for every tank similar to the old leo sight ingame. thermals can be nice aswell but they need to add more AT options first. tank vs tank fights historically were also usually ambushes not direct fights with who ever spots the other first winning the fight usually.

They need to remake vehicles entirely imo. All of them should have fully modeled interiors, a proper health system like Warthunder/Arma Reforger, and APCs/IFVs with firing ports should be made functional. The handling of all vehicles feel like a shitty test demo that they just decided to keep. Should be remade entirely.

If there's one thing I would like from a vehicle overhaul it's: GEAR SHIFTING. I need to be able to pop the low gear when climbing hills. I also hate that the engine noise is generic/not tied to the speed. Have you tried driving in Arma Reforger? It's hella fun, I want that In Squad.

Atm vehicles are significantly too tanky (duh) for their role. I’ve seen tanks withstand side attacks from multiple lat/hat, hitting, and failing to do significant damage. Tanks and IFV’s are strong, sure. But with how difficult AT weapons are to employ as is with limited ammo, tanks and ifv’s are simply too survivable in close quarters. If i had to count the number of times ive seen a tank immobilized that could still in the end escape because it wasnt able to be killed without multiple rearms, i’d run out of fingers. I like how they work, but they need a more set health bar in my opinion for this game.

4:22 arena M is still in prototyp phase what you mean is Shotra-1 Soft kill APS Basicly confuses missile guidance system but dosent work against modern ATGMs thats why on the T-90M they removed it Arena-M was planned for their tank fleet but as of now its still not in service 5:12 only russian vehicle that could counter a javelin attack would be the T-14 Armarta it has UV cameras looking around for incoming missiles and if the javelin flies up against the sky the camera can see it easily and then the system would deploy smoke launchers including the one launcher on the turret pointing upwards the smoke blocks thermal signture to and javelin locks onto thermal signatures so the smoke being deployed would cause the javelin to lose track could also be a counter right now well if the crew sees the launch and good luck with that

U are the first person I’ve actually seen talking about the aps on the t90 it’s like none of the big squad RU-vidrs know what aps is and they nvr bring it up talking about the t90 only that “it’s just a bit better then the t72”

What I hope they could bring in is destruction of buildings or atleast partially. One of the main role for tanks on the battlefield isnt engaging other tanks but to destroy fortified enemies. So the ability to level or atleast do a lot of damage to people inside a building would be a great asset to mbt's in the game as currently u can't really engage enemies in cities or buildings as a tank since they're indistructable

Adding APS Will definitely make factions way more op than others, this will make the current voting system even worse. Everyone already either picks Armoured, Combined arms or mechanized. Even though the other units have their unique pros like grenade launcher emplacements on light infantry. Players just don't want to learn all these new unit pros and cons so they just pick the ones with the most tanks/IFVS. It's really annoying because when they add new weapons or emplacements you can't test them out because people always pick US armoured. "democracy is for the people, by the people, from the people. But the people are retarded". This will make this worse because people just gonna pick the one that has APS and more armour. I have played MEA 1 time since the voting update, Mea vs Us armored would just be unwinnable and there will be a "unit meta".

Great video! I´ve been asking for a Vehicle Combat Overhauls for years and OWI already have a game with a VERY GOOD VCO. It´s Squad 44. The driver needs to change gears and you can feel the weight of your individual vehicle much more. Light vehicles do still have automatic gear shifting to balance. Only applies to heavier vehicles. Add the more realistic hitbox with individual compartmens, crew damage and you have in my opinion a cool VCO. PLS MAKE IT HAPPEN !!! Also the Bradley BFIST make laser designation possible for future updates?

I think APS is wishful thinking, look at the Bradley variant they introduced. I think the VCO is potentially thermals and IR with the inclusion of night players. It would be easier to create, and already exists in some mods.

The differentiation will be an aps, but not a hard kill one. The T-90 A in game already has shtora (the eyes) and so this is likely what they are referring to and will be far less difficult to balance.

I think the armor right now is too strong actually, especially after ICO, but i would like to see a deeper rework of tanks and armored vehicles to imitate the war thunder's system. Heat rockets and Tandem Rockets will actually matter where APS can block simple heat rockets. Furthermore, i hope they add the possibility of dieing inside the vehicle or getting hurt or maybe incapacited for some time because sometimes shooting a rocket is a death sentence because the people inside the tank can still shoot you and it would be more realistic that if your rocket penetrated at the right spot it could kill or incapacitate the crewman. As i said, tanks right now are very strong and basically sometimes getting a chance to shoot them with inf is almost impossible because of the suppression, my idea would make it so that getting hit for a vehicle can be more detrimental and that they should play more safely and further away which, if they do it now makes them basically untouched by infantry (and they should always do it, for armor to push without infantry support is always a death sentence). So at least if you can get a shot on a tank maybe you can incapacitate the driver or gunner and have the time to load your next shot or move to another cover, but also to the HAT/LAT having a wt type damage system means that aiming now matters more than ever and you might actually take your time to avoid shooting at the APS and wasting your rocket. I haven't slept for 20 hours so maybe i didn't write properly but i hope that it is clear enough to show my point of view.

With all due respect, but the APS/PPS is something that will cause way more problems then fixes, with the main one being that most of the armour in the game IRL does not have them. I my personal opinion, they should do the vehicle combat overhaul by adding thermal into the game, redoing the entire armour/damage system in the game and making drivers periscope something actually useful (look at Squad 44 for inspiration.)

Neither the BMP-3 nor the T-90A have a hardkill APS in their standard configuaration. Arena and Shtora are both useless against top attack threats Unless you want Squad to add prototype vehicles that have never seen combat your argument makes no sense. Might as well add the AbramsX to the US at that point.

A more simple change would also be having ERA actually work, but I do think a more advanced armour/damage system similar to warthunder would be good

4:20 Shtora, and its soft kill aka it makes so the missiles guidence system gets confused and it just misses the tank completely. It only works on older style ATGMs and does not work on more modern systems. T-90M does have an arena APS package in the plans but im pretty sure if any have been produced they have not seen any combat yet and the T-90M was developed in 2016? what im saying is that its a newer vehicle and its not the T-90A that gets the arena hard kill APS (Hard kill meaning it directly destroys the incoming projectile meaning it works on EVERY atgm)

Squad has to introduce better role to Armor I feel like its not being used at all for example on Invasion Basrah u cant take Airport even if u have all of armor support and shit because they all get inside buildings and no matter what u do u cant do enough for team and I guess only thing to do is probabbly buff HEAT round to do bigger dmg or increase its lethal radius as well dealing more dmg to structures emplaced because In order to destory 1 Observation tower u have to put in 7 to 10 heat rounds and I dont feel like that is normal when house gets oblitirated with 2 shells thrown on it they have to increase its utilty if it costs 1 rocket to get tracked and be out of fight because its very under appriciative

Fix the anti tank capabilities like an RPG-7 with a HEAT round cannot penetrate any ERA. Or it shouldn’t even make the Abrams disabled, they need to rework anti tank stuf

first of all, I would just like point out. saying bmp-3 and t90A have hard kill APS that would stop a projectile mid flight is a bit of a stretch. T90a specifically does have a APS but what's called soft kill APS meaning it wouldn't stop the projectile but would rather only tell you. "Hey ! there's a laser being pointed at you from this direction! Might wanna pop that IR smoke or move bro"

As an armor player to those who dont play armor or for some reason dont understand as he said in the video all it takes is 1 lat shot to mobility kill a tank no matter if the whole team is a around a tank the chances of surviving in armor while playing with or next to infantry on caps is waaaay lower then what yu guys like calling us “playing war thunder across the map”

Even without hats and lats why should armor be focusing on infantry when the enemy team has a tank or other armor moving around as well what some people dont understand is no matter how you update fix or change armor this type of gameplay with armor most likely wont change as an experienced armor crew or not its the safest way for armor to play and be effective at all

To many times ive seen the “most armored vehicles” in game be the first things to die when playing on a cap with infantry because all it takes it 1 lat and your tank is more likely to die then even be useful enough then when the tanks dead because people complain the tank crews not moving with infantry thats when their armor shows up and low and behold we have no armor to help with that

Ruzzian have NEVER used ANY active protection systems in combar EVER. This is why there shouldn't be any ruzzian tanks with APSs in Squad.

Mate, I know you have a small channel and you like pure speculation, but cmon, before making something like that, please verify your info. For your informantion in Squad 8.0 was added a T-90A, not an "M" variant, that tank is basically a T-72 with new welded turret, a couple cm of armor, better engine and LWS. That APS you talking about is not installed on it. Although T-90A has "Shtora" (Red Eyes), the maximum capabilities of which is in theory disroupt ATGM guidance, it will not work against Javelin. P.S Even T-90M does not have an APS, what has been proven by the Ukrainians.

Javelin is infra quided, so the shtora can disrupt if if it is flying low enough, and the only atgm missiles that shtora can disrupt are laser quided.

No, they won’t add any ap systems and here is why 1. they aren’t used irl in quantities needed to be sufficient to actually do anything for overall armor efficiency (not in ukrain, not in any other conflict except gaza) 2. to op for armor, which is already op What I think they suppose to rework is armor protection, navigation in rough terrain, coax mg on separate button, less ttk for bigger rounds, reaktiv armor, easier to ammo rack with atgm
