Why I Choose a “Boring” Life

I always wake up and go to sleep at the same time. I don't really drink alcohol. I enjoy sunlight, reading, chatting with friends (over coffee), and playing recreational sports. Maybe this is why my dating profile isn't getting many hits...

Also, "boring" tends to be a judgment and perception passed by other people. In my life, if I am bored, I do something to entertain myself, but it will never stop a third party's perspective from still labeling me as boring.

Yes, and it doesn't mean you have to be an introvert or anti-social. You just take control of the times you want to go out and be around people and make time for all those things that are important to you that you can only do alone, with focus, such as making music or writing in my case. Tom Hardy saw the danger of it as well as the joy. Like everything else in life, it is about finding balance and ensuring, as a quote I found said, "That people do not confuse your free time with your availability" which was and sometimes still is a problem with friends. No-one thinks I am introverted or anti-social - I'm just busy doing ME stuff in the peace of my apartment.

I wholeheartedly agree with living a boring life. I’m 70 and before I retired people would ask me: “Well, are you going to travel, maybe go on a few cruises?” I can’t think of anything more annoying than constantly packing and unpacking suitcases. And as far as cruises (floating shopping malls full of fake smiles and herd mentality) the thought of looking out on ‘water’ would bore me to tears. Or “adventure vacstions”. I’ve never needed ANY of that to feel content and happy.

I didn't find real inner peace until I retired. While I was working I felt like a crazy chicken running around trying to get everything done that was expected of me. What I love about my retirement is that I have no one making demands on me. I can finally just breathe and enjoy the silence. I don't have to prove anything to anyone. It completely improved my health. I had high blood pressure problems when I was working. My blood pressure is now normal to below normal. I told my doctor it's because I'm retired now. So my advice to everyone is learn how to "just breathe". Turn off all the extraneous garbage. It's so simple, but not easy to do in a frantic world. The closer you can get to this state, the better you will feel. At least I think so.

Me and my friends arrange walks at the beach with hot flasks of coffee. A walk in the woods. We try and keep healthy and happy. I don’t drink anymore. I don’t go out late. I used to to conform. Now I just say no. I have a few very close friends. They know me and know I’m not happy having to be excessively sociable. Sometimes I say no to meeting them. They understand that I’m just needing time to reflect alone. If I try and force myself to do things I don’t enjoy then I end up stressed and unhappy. I’ve learned to surround myself with a few people who just accept me the way I am. I’ve let go of the life where people were telling me I needed to explore and travel to be happy. To try new things. I really don’t. I did those things years ago because it was ‘normal’. I’d get home and need weeks to decompress. Dreading the next time. It’s taken me a good while to find the confidence to allow myself to just be me. Good luck 😊

I dropped out and retired early at 58. It was amazing to realize how much our society programs us that everything has to be exciting, momentous, earth shattering etc. A lot of it has to do with marketing to make people spend money to have these peak experiences like sports games or concerts or flashy clothes, cars etc. I purposely embraced boredom when I discovered I was mostly being used. So became mostly unavailable. Don't even go to Christmas and thanksgiving events. But I discovered a whole NEW world where people are NOT my central focus at all. Learned to link up with the animal and plant kingdom, explore my dreams and intuition and create as I feel . The pandemic was a blessing in disguise as it forced me to turn inward and forced the elimination of useless and time wasting , money wasting 💩like me daily Starbucks ritual. In addition to the expense I realized I didn't like being in cafes with LOUD music, paying too much and the obligatory tip. My money improved greatly just by saving as there was nothing open to spend on and I've maintained the habit. I LOVE being boring. 😊

I know I can if I want to, but I'm happier alone because most people bore me to death and I'd rather sit in the closet with a flashlight reading a book than go to a party and think: “I don’t want to be here” and do it just to please others.

Over the last 10 to 15 years, I've dropped TV news; then news; then all TV; then all social media except RU-vid; and now heavily "curate" RU-vid. Even some channels I used to enjoy now try to make the extreme and dramatic seem like the day-to-day. Stress is a drug and so much of the media are pushers.

Thanks for the great and insightful video, as always. 3 Things: I follow a belief, "You know you're rich when you know you have enough." That's why so many people are chasing after the unobtainable and still unhappy not realising that they had enough a long time ago. Second, "boredom is a sign of a lack of intelligence". Hence, I don't think that you are boring at all. I think that your thinking is highly intelligent because you realise that leading a simple, at peace and in the moment life, which is quiet and not highlighted by extremes, is an intelligent and wholesome way to live. Finally, I have always gone in the opposite direction to the crowd. While at times that can be isolating or even lonely, it means I am following my own path, my own choices and have no-one to blame if it goes pear-shaped. Which is the third thing, "we create our own reality", so make sure you create a great one.

Bravo! You're living a simple practical unproblematic inner peaceful life. You're not keeping up with the Jones, Smiths, and trends but you're embracing your individuality which makes you a "leader" and not a "follower." Embracing who you are as an individual, you look and act like Zach H and not everyone else. Happiness is not things or an inner feeling but "contentment" with what you have and who you are exercising your brain to think your individual thoughts and expand your intelligence as an individual "who you are" and not trying to be someone or something else. Using common sense leads to contentment, happiness, joy, and a balance way of life because you're YOU! 🤗🤗

I really enjoyed this video! While I find it easy to simply my belongings, I find it difficult to simply my schedule. I don’t want to let others down by saying no to attending an event…. I like the idea of answering “h__ yeah” to every event I deliberately decide to attend.

I am happy the almighty algorithm showed me this video. I remember wanting the exact opposite of boring when I was a teen. Because only the "successful" people on Instagram etc made it in life, right? All those fancy things and living in expensive places! Hahaha, I love my teen self. Now I'm 27 and realizing that "boring" isn't boring at all. I want my inner peace and happiness. Currently I'm in a rough patch, but I'm looking forward to some more calm soon. Wishing the best to all of you ❤

Thanks for pointing this out. The bottom line is, do what works for YOU. We tend to be influenced by social media, the actions of people around us and by convention but figuring out what gives us pleasure, what's important and how we feel our best is a very personal journey that requires courage to stand up for yourself. It gets easier when older but worth thinking about at any stage of our lives.

great video! my life is simple and boring by most standards but deeply rewarding. even in my thirties i still hold on to the fomo of "what my life is supposed to look like" - parties, etc. but i love the quiet rewards of simplicity. thank you for this.

I can relate. Also in healthcare. And sometimes I wonder if it’s because of that that I seek not maybe “boring”…but peace. I like to read, stay in bed, take walks or do some stuff in nature, but don’t drink or do drugs. I do like spontaneity and I’m also a hopeless romantic. I guess look for things that make me love life and see its joy again. My perfect night would be cuddling while watching Marvel. Is that weird? Probably. But yes oh so nice. Sincerely, Looking for my future husband

I’m definitely guilty of trying to “fit in” with the crowd. To this day, as a college student, I sometimes force myself to do things I really don’t want to do in order to “fit in” and “make memories”. For example, I was invited to a house party and decided to go. Needless to say, I hated it. It was too damn loud, too many people were being too wild, alcohol was everywhere, and overall, I just didn’t feel safe. So, I left. Hell, just today, I went to a popular art installation called “Meow Wolf”. Again, it was loud and overstimulating. People were everywhere, everything was noisy, bright, and oversaturated. I ended up leaving exhausted and with a headache. It seemed like everyone but me loved it, which kind of sucks, because I’m, once again, the oddball. Damn near everyone my age just wants to party, party, party. Meanwhile, I want friends (and I have a handful of close friends, but due to our lives being busy, it’s hard to get together most days), and I want to have fun. But my version of fun is hanging out with small, quiet groups of people in quiet safe places. Unfortunately, most people my age consider that extremely boring, and therefore don’t want to hang out with me all that much…

II certainly had some fun going out when I was younger. At first as a teen, I was just going through the motions, because it was the thing to do. Later when I was in my twenties after some major life transformations, I really enjoyed going out. It was a different experience. That life style wore me out tho. Now I live the boring life, studying, working, exercising, meditating, writing, eating healthy. I think it’s nice to have all these experiences.

I agree with this. im 23 and in my late teens and early 20s i try to fit in but i realize i really dont like that kind of life. i am living my life privately now and focusing on my thing (career, self, and quality people). i am more at peace now and i really want to continue to be boring. i dont care what other people say this is my life not theirs.

I❤my non-conventional life too! I live for myself and no one else. I dislike the pressures of consumerism and fashion that tells us we need to dress a certain way to be accepted by society. At the end of the day most people who we think we need to please are the superficial ones that are insecure. They are not my world so I say ‘screw them’!

It's so simply you address how boring life is having true happiness. And so many times my family or relatives used to say i m a boring person or one of my classmates told me that she considers me as a nerd. And i was like i m not it's just she finds happiness in other things and i am in other. But i felt bad too then. As time passes i get to know how i really happy with my friends,my family, follow myself truly. This is so good explanation of being simple and simple person isn't not having true happiness. BTW i like traveling so much offcourse getting peace is different by different methods for different person. As traveling is my real enthusiasm and i rarely go as being a High school student it's not easy. So i feel something is missing in my life too. Could suggest me how to be confident person feels like i m but still i m not. It's like sometimes I feel i m that much confident but sometimes i really not able to do just little chit chat with teacher in free time even though my classmates do perfectly and so frankly too. I just want to communicate with my teacher like as who i am truly but can't.

I used to go out a lot like on a weekend basis type thing. I never felt good about it being in peoples faces constantly. I felt like I didn’t have the time to do the projects that bring me joy and happiness. Now I’m staying inside more saying no more, which has given me a peace of mind once I started to control my life again. I highly recommend living a slow paced life.

When you mentioned that deepening the relationships with people in your life is something to prioritize, I could not agree more. All the travel and excitement isn't going to matter one but when you're on your deathbed or when someone you love is dying. You'll always want more time with them so making that time matter is so important. Modern relationships with family and friends are so different from what they should be because of social media and many other things, so actually putting work into those connections is rare and so important
