I tried to run a marathon over a mountain....with my little dog

Nixon and I travelled to Wales to run in the Limitless Trails Beast of the Beacons 20 mile race. We were confident with the running part but not sure about the going over mountains part!
Ended up being a good day and nice to spend some time outside my comfort zone.

When I clicked on this video, I was all, but Nixon is so small! I hope you've really built up his training slowly over time, what about his hips! But then I saw him 15 miles in, pulling you up a mountain, and realised this dog is in his absolute element. I eat my words, what an absolute champ he is. First dog, for sure.

Nixon (well, his breed) were originally bred for fox hunting so you could say running is in his genes!

@@intomlinson Not really, they were for putting down holes to flush foxes out not chasing them over open ground, that's the job of the foxhound which is a far larger animal.

I had a jack Russell many years ago , she was used to follow me on mountain bike run every time i go out and running in front of the bike. I’m in too running stuff for while now and you make me dream with this video. I wish to have an another JRT and hope he will come with me running. Best run wishes to you both 😘

Another great video Mark! Run looked amazing/Hellish! I have done the Brecon 10mile before but nothing like the terrain you did. Loved the sweet spot philosophy, keep up the great work 👍

Great video to watch. So jealous of your running buddy. Used to go out with mine as well but he passed away in April. Showed my girlfriend the video as well and she loved Nixon and thought you were hilarious as well. We got a cat now. Too early for another dog. And with work also not ideal now. When I showed the video to my cat and said that we would start going for runs as well, he was visibly disgusted and not interested whatsoever.

Not sure if you will read this, I was given some advice if your planning on running with Nixon or any dog and him pulling a lot like he did downhill starting with a shoe half to 1 size larger than normal stops your toes smashing into your toe box. Was talking to some Canicross runners who are so much better than I’ll ever be who run 1 to 1.5 sizes larger for the runs that max out 5-7.5km iand half to one size for longer runs up ultras. It’s something to do with the rose split seconds your foot is on the ground the dog pulls you and your feet slides forward inside the shoe, even worse downhill.

Brilliant!! Loved this video. Congrats to Nixon! I run with my Husky (actual husky mix) and love it. I don’t think I’d be picking up my 65 pound husky quite as easily as you pick up Nixon.. Love your videos!!

Do you take your husky running? I am an ultramarathoner and I'd love a dog to take running - a husky sounds perfect since they can clock huge distances. But sadly it gets extremely hot in in summer here.

You were up at cloud base basically and cloud base is a layer of cooler air that will reflect sound from below. That's why you were able to hear the voices of pple from some distance away.

Best way to train a dog for something like this is in my opinion (and what our vet told us) build it gradually, and specially when building his stamina keep a good eye on him, if he's ahead of you, generally you're good, if he starts to run next to or behind you trying to keep up, call it a day. Also go visit the vet a bit more often than the annual check up just to keep an eye on any issues that might develop. Our dachshund used to do 30-40 KM runs as well and that's how he got to be in a shape to run like that. And make sure it's a fun experience for him/her is important. These days our dog is 13 yrs old and still in good shape, but clearly 30-40km runs are a no-no these days. At the annual check ups the vets always comment he's still very fit and seems really healthy, so that's good :)

Mark, have you done any middle distance monster hill runs? They require a mix of power and cardio. The steepest hill in Norwich is 14.6% grade for 0.2km. I lived on the other side of the valley (a few km from Gas Hill,) and used to run a total 1km (I didn't know it was that distance it was just a course from my house round and up a monster fucking steep hill lol.) My best time was breaking 6:30. The course included that monster hill from King's Street up Southgate Lane which has a grade of 14.1%. I loved that course. The Olympics events are on the flat, but the marathon winner won because of his ability to run the hills in Paris better than the others. I'd be very interested to see steep hills included in Olympic track events.

After a little bit of googling I have bought a lead and we're going to try a short run to see how he gets on. Then hopefully next year try a few races. Secondly I wish you all the best in your training for the Ironman and look forward to seeing your updates and following your progress and hopefully in the next few years I will be able to follow in your footsteps.
