Cool video, I’ve seen pics of people trying it but nice to see it all in action. Sadly I think this feature died with the gen 2 and picnic table since I don’t think you can have removable headrests in cars anymore. It’s not an ideal sleeping surface but if you had an inflatable mattress to lay over the top of it I bet it would be great, and then you could keep whatever you had in the trunk back there instead of trying to turn that into sleeping space
No the one he is showing is the 2nd gen and it's in it we used to have a second gen until it got in a crash and totaled. And it has the table and bed everything. The feature was lost in the 3rd genm
I used to have a gen 1 CRV and slept in it like this with 3 thin foam pads and it was actually very comfortable for someone who's 5' 7". Considering exchanging my current Mercedes Sprinter camper for a gen 2 CRV with a roof tent.
Been car camping this way, but since I'm 5 ft , I level out the seats with pillows , put air mattress and have my head by the dashboard and can look up through my moon roof to see the stars 🌟 I sleep sooo very well and have privacy window coverings for stealth and insulation! I transform only front passenger side. Love my 2003 Honda CRV 😀

I only do my passenger side, add pillows to level out, add air mattress, head towards dashboard & look out through moon roof at the 🌟 😀 2003 Honda CRV Ex
Hear me out man, during work if I want to really chill out and clear my head during lunch I head out the my Crv (1st gen) and convert the passenger side but with leaving the rear seat in place and just reclining it. Perfect lounge chair. 🤙
Just bought a 2003 and we found the best bed is rolling the front seats all the up then rolling the back seats all the way up and using a platform we made (3 connecting pieces) and a folding cushion we have a big bed. Takes less than 8 minutes to put together. If you’re under 5’8” you can leave the front seats where they are for a quick crawl through to drive away. Bought the car yesterday designed and cut the pieces last night and put it together this morning so we can go camping this weekend. Life is good!
How cool! Thanks a lot for sharing this video. I'm now searching to buy one... Depending on camera angles, determining the angle of what you're viewing can be a challenge. What angle (from horizontal) would you estimate the recline to be? ('97 - '01 years, I know, recline more, but finding an EX from those years in decent condition is super rare!)
just straight saw the single seat in the back or just break it and do some DIY stuff but id def break hose back seats back and put like a [clean] tiny dog bed over the consol upside down like a cap over the center consol for cushenness
Great idea. However hard for me to sleep with the head up. here is an idea. Is it possible to take the rear right side seat only off and add a small platform to make it a comfy bed plan. This way you have the CRV intact to be used as a 3 seater, when not on a road trip. just a thought. like to hear from others if anyone has done it or is it viable.
I have had both, and I agree. The 1st gen doesn't have LATCH for car seats and I think that's why the 2nd and 3rd gen rear seats don't fold outwards. I sold my 1st gen to get a 2nd gen because I have kids and wanted something a little safer. 1st gen handled so well tho it felt like driving a fat civic lol. 2nd gen has a lot more body roll.
OMG this is so epic I can't stop crying. I told my grandma and now she's screaming hysterically while slapping my CR-V on the butt and jumping like a mountain goat.
