Plastering is in full swing in the kitchen and Kylie has been busy next door in the lounge. In this week's episode Kylie tackles a project that's been on the list for (literally) years, installs a liner for a window and tries her hand at mixing hemp lime plaster.

Kylie, I’m so impressed by the work you do, all the time! But I do wonder, as it seem that the knowledge you have and the talent or way of expressing everything you work with, you must have some kind of engineering education or are you just a “superpower talented handywoman” I’m so impressed and love to watch you both work with the house and garden👏👏
@MAKEDOGROW

No engineering education, just a brain that loves maths and all things logical (hence my previous career in I.T). I do have a lot of curiosity and so am always absorbing information and looking up the why and how to problems. Our past renovations also really help inform us on this one (this is the biggest by far)

I know you always say it takes twice as long do to anything when you video it, but here you actually show the additional steps required. Thanks for educating us how much time and effort you expend making/doing all your projects.

Yes, I have a friend who does vlogs about his EV, he doesn't usually do long ones, but he did comment when he started about how much time it takes to film and edit. I suppose it gets easier once you establish a rhythm. Some people are amazing with the amount of content they manage to produce, particularly when making exclusive Patreon content.

What about a temporary portable shed that can be shifted anywhere in future? That would give you a workspace now? No doubt you have thought of this but maybe not. Another idea is putting a temporary awning on the outside of a building to give you a shelter to work under... Martijn Doorlaand has done this on his Italian Alps restoration. His site has so many ideas worth following. Glad you are having some fun with what seems a huge challenge and very austere.
@MAKEDOGROW

We have thought about a shed (very expensive, too hot/cold depending on the season, and would need a solid base that would take us away from other work) and every other option we can think of. Our current idea is to use the tent (with the base removed) and the deck/kitchen shed once we’ve moved in the house ….

I have an RV down by the Ocean and had my first waterline pex experience this past year. In a very very small space on a 100 degree, 100 percent humidity day. The pex experience was super simple but what I had to do to get to it had me cursing like a truck driver and praying to the Gods. lol. I actually cried when it was done. 2 days of aggravation. Fix one and another one blew out. Oh the joys of DIY. Good job Kylie!!

Hi Kylie from Adel SA; you made a fab vid, I really enjoyed it. I'm about your age, just a tad older & was brought up all over the place, at a time & in cultures which still actively discouraged & impeded girls who wanted more than to be just a fashionably-groomed baby producing mannequin, or the submissive good woman behind some good man who society deemed could have his dreams fulfilled. The inquisitive daughter of an engineer, as any maintenance/repairs were needed, I just did it - DIY. 'Just do it' meant something before giant athleisure sweatshops. Workshop practices were my opportunity to play with fun subjects & tools - things that often-bypassed girls. Solving puzzles with research, playing with maths & logic, then seeing the physical result- DIY was awesome, like life size Lego & Meccano only better, because it was useful. Yet, despite opportunities & attitudes having improved enormously for girls, I'm still astounded by the many women who still believe it's "men's work" & beyond them. I've even been warned-off by female workmates, in advance of work social functions, not to tell their husbands/partners about anything I'd built or that I did all my own DIY, home maintenance etc. They were so afraid of having to do likewise & being unable. It's so great to see you just quietly get on with it without fuss, demonstrating that all DIY really takes is the willingness to research how & the commitment to work hard until it's done. My tiniest 'improvement' suggestion? Etc isn't pronounced "icksetra" like most of this country also mispronounce; it's "ET" then "SET--er-ah" from the Latin 'et cetera', meaning "and the rest". LOL. Btw I liked the quiet bits too. Too many channels focus on distractingly overpowering music & gimmickry, repeating themselves unnecessarily for excessive amounts of time & constantly grooming while watching themselves in the viewfinder, when they should focus more on the actual quality of their content like you guys. Good concise storytelling & editing makes a better video. Great work both of you.

If you applied for the planning permission now in advance of your planned workshop build given the lead time and it was granted, is there a time limit imposed by which time the project must be completed? Is there a tax implication before the project is completed (or, as in France, what is called hors d'eau et hors d'air - ie rainproof and draughtproof) where no tax is imposed generally until those stages are reached.
@MAKEDOGROW
@MAKEDOGROW 6 месяцев назад
We have already started the process 😀 … there’s a load of paperwork to be sorted before we can even put the application in unfortunately. Regarding time frames, yes. Once granted you have a year in which you must start and then another 2 in which it must be finished (though you can get extensions on both). I believe tax isn’t payable until the building is completed and officially registered

We’ve followed your lead on applying our hemp + cork lime plaster by hand. Your videos made it look easy and simple and fun. Now that we’re a couple weeks into using the stuff, I’m definitely happy with the way it’s going by hand. I don’t find myself wishing for a trowel at all. The direct tactile sensation on the palms and fingers (through gloves of course) gives tons of feedback about the consistency of the mix, the key on the wall, the smoothness / levelness.

During the bleeping downstairs it broke to a Levi's Jeans logo at the beginning of a commercial. For a second I thought instead of the bleeping you decided to cover the bleeping by showing a company logo. Selling one second flash add time during bleeps. I thought it was superb thinking! Alas it was only a commercial, BUT. Maybe you could actually get a company to pay you to cover bleeps with their company logo!

Unless they want to fly over, travel and do that work themselves, it's better for everyone to just leave things well enough alone. I cuss quite proficiently mostly because I worked on construction sites with extremely fluent males cussing. I lived through it. 😅

Where I have a tiny window like the one you framed, I will order a double glazed single piece and install it. It will not open, true, too bad, but It would do little to cool in any case. Hopefully there are other windows nearby. I have also placed a simple shutter outside the little window to close on those few snow or extreme cold days. The shutter is not important. A fixed window keeps out drafts and allows in the maximum light since it does not have framing taking up space. The frame you build is enough to set glass in, using quarter-round molding around the glass and glaze. Good luck with more of your beautiful work.

It is hard to work, film and create content. I see that now. All of you RU-vidrs in Portugal Inspired me to create a channel. I now see why it's like a full time job. I arrive Friday after my dads funeral on Thursday. He passed away last week which is sad. But must carry on. Looking forward to being there finally. I put an offer on a property near Fundao. Where are you....Carry on> You did an amazing job....You did just fine. IT's really time consuming. Easy to work and do our job but its a lot of work to work and video you are correct. Cheers you guys. Gina in Upstate New York Moving to Portugal. Arriving FRIDAY Yeah

Surprised you didn’t put the frame further back into the window opening so you gained a window shelf for plants, ornaments etc

Maximising light is more important than a shelf in this instance

Kylie, you rock! Doing all of that And learning new skills in filming. I live in a neighborhood where the “mature” gents offer suggestions and opinions when I am working on a project. -Never help. 🤣 I love the process, figuring things out, learning and being creative. And strong, “Missy, this heavy. How are you going to move that?” Like eating an elephant . . . bite by bite. Beautiful job on the window frame!

I’d put a pretty little stained glass window in that narrow little window……the outside window. it’s a great window for a little plants; think Ivy.
