I've got a batch of spawn going with unmodified metal lids. As soon as I finished inoculating them, I thought "well, this seems like it's going to a big F***ing waste of time, these are bound to contam" so far no contams showing up, but I'm not too confident. Hopefully some make it, but I won't be doing the unmodified lids again.
@AcrylicGoblin

Amazingly, all of the jars made it. I made little tyvek hoods, so that may have helped. After that, I bought some SFDs and RTV'd pieces to plastic lids with quarter inch holes. My jars with these lids seemed to colonize faster. Lion's mane especially seemed to like the extra gas exchange. Definitely worth the time and expense to make proper lids IMO
@jakelooter5139
@jakelooter5139 Год назад
@@AcrylicGoblin yeah it most definitely IS worth the time. even better than RTV (I dont like using it adds a day for cure and it is messy and hard to re-use the tubed since it cures too at the opening), get stick on injection ports, they are for sale all over the internet for around 500 for 20$ or 100 for 10$ or anything you can find. they are very very well made, last a long time, like one sterilization after another, and take seconds to apply, oh, and actually look good, unlike ghetto RTVed ports. Tyvek works great it just looks terrible but I use it for seals I cannot easily get airtight on with any other way (strange mouth shapes primarily). unmodified colonization is crap and contam can come from insects going in through the opening. Significantly suboptimal. Also, contaminated air can enter through the non filtered air. Not a good TEK...

Hello, I'm using modified lids for my wbs grain spawn (the premade liquid culture lids that have syringe filters for gas exchange) Is this enough air exchange for grain jars? I wasn't sure if I should leave them loose or not, I kept them tightened after PC, and I noticed the jars are taking a couple weeks to colonize a couple inches. I only used 1cc of liquid culture (APE) and the growth took 2 weeks or so to barely start a small corner. I made a mistake not to shake the lc as soon as I inoculated because I thought it was the same as spores, I've since reshaken. I also made a rookie mistake and inoculated a couple hot jars, got 0 growth in those so I shot another 1-2cc in my sab in those 2 jars. Sorry I'm new to this thanks

Yea I run unmodified lids and you gotta use them in isolated areas, so a shelf that’s been blocked of all airflow. The amount of GE they provide allows for much quicker colonization when compared side by side to a filtered jar…no question. Never any stalling out either. But running filtered jar lids I can set them in less restricted areas and be a bit more lax with em. I use half inch holes and microppose or micropore filters. But folks have stalling or slow growth issues with filtered grains may want to try a larger GE hole or trying unmodified lids in an air-movement-free place.

@@Drenger7 I use popcorn and oats for jars which are master jars inoculated with agar, sometimes I’ll go agar directly to 5lb bags with liquid inoculated / slurry. The master jars get grain to grained into more popcorn jars and bags, and you can use as little as 5-10 kernels or as much as you’d like, more initially making it quicker. I use 5lb bags of whole oats of producers pride from tractor supply and just soak for 18-22ish hr. @dakotawallace1156

Water resistance shouldn't matter as you still wrap lid with tinfoil. That's the purpose of tinfoil to not let direct water but steam inside
@rjennings0142
@rjennings0142 10 месяцев назад
@@dakotawallace1156Ah, see this is what I've been curious of. I've been seeing posts around of contamination situations that are most likely from overly moistened micropore tape- as micropore tape is a good option for blocking out contaminants but once it becomes overly saturated the contaminants can get into the containers through the liquid. But I've been thinking to myself, "how would one get around micropore tape getting moisture/saturated while pressure cooking when it's a high moisture environment from the steam?". I was thinking the solution would be to allow the cooker to fully cool and evaporate any condensation but the time and condensation itself would make that challenging. So you're saying steam in the pressure cooker is fine, but only with tin foil to block direct contact from water droplets- and with this wouldn't this thought process need to be carried out through the entire colonization processes (avoiding filter saturation) which use some form of filter?
@dakotawallace1156
@dakotawallace1156 10 месяцев назад
@rjennings0142 I myself have never noticed any saturation on my filters. I have always just used 0.3 μm filters I got from Amazon. I'm sure it is possible for them to become saturated tho. Do some researching to see if certain rate and thickness filters can cause it and if others are a better choice

This could be bad genes. It could also be the way you dried them. Try cutting your mushrooms in half vertically. I do this and then dry them in a dehydrator at 115-120F.
