TBH, before and after pictures are weird lol. I just want to make it known that I was just as beautiful in the before pic as I am in the after. I wish you guys could see the spiritual and mental transformation tho- That’s something more important than the physical transformation to me. This wasn't just about doing another "i lost (crazy amount of weight) in 2 days!!" video, this was about creating a sustainable lifestyle. This video was really a labor of love because not only was I on this wellness journey I was also experiencing some real-life toxic things that kept popping up- which made it hard to complete this video. I also went thru a depression when I broke my hand, which is another story lol We started this video at the end of August of 2019 and I was struggling to not only produce the video, but also cut the story, edit it, AND relive the experience lol What made me finish it was the fact that I know somebody needs to see this video. It’s about loving where you’re at in this moment like Jess said in the video. I’m not saying that I’m ~*cured*~, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I still emotional eat from time to time. And I have gained some weight back. But I’m not beating myself up about it this time? because I fully believe I’m still badass no matter what? That’s the biggest progress for me. At the end of the day, it’s a journey and I’m happy with the progress I’ve made. Special thanks to @babesofwellness and @jessgguzman for being so patient with me throughout all of this!

I feel like a lot of people don’t realize that being in a fitness journey at first seems like you just want to loss weight to “look better”. What a lot of people don’t realize is that it’s really freaking hard to get up and do it. That’s where, as you said, spiritual and mental transformation begins. When you get up and do it against your will, that’s powerful. When it feels good to sit down, or sleep in, or just have a few doughnuts because you’re sad, those are the things we try to overcome. The slimming down of the body should be a byproduct of a fitness journey because the spiritual and mental transformation take over. I will say, you looked beautiful before this journey of yours and you look beautiful still. The inner transformation can be seen in yours eyes.

You did great Maya! Keep it up! You making this video shows its ok to mess up but GIVING UP IS NOT AN OPTION. And you proved that to yourself! You also proved to yourself that you are stronger then you think! I love how honest you are WITH YOURSELF. Take Care of yourself and continue on this journey. YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT! God Bless!

I really appreciate the fact that the trainer was okay with Maya crying and acknowledging her feelings and allowing her to express her frustrations. I feel like other trainers just make people ignore or push through the tears and it’s not always the best approach.

Yes some trainers take it way to serious and yell and get mad so easily. Trainers need to know everyone is at a different pace and some people do this to be healthy not everyone is trying to become a profession at it
@mkenyon1978

I agree! The tough love approach works for some, but not everyone (just like the soft touch isn’t going to benefit everybody). Plus even if it does work it’s important to teach clients (especially those new or fairly new to fitness) how to know what discomfort you need to push through and what discomfort they need to listen to and stop. It’s an important distinction. Ideally all trainers would be able to look at the client and change their style based on what the client best responds to. Similar to how a good coach or teacher can do this.

Please be careful when starting a new work out program! If you haven't exercised for a long time, or are carrying a lot of extra weight, you can really hurt yourself. I have done the same thing, and realized after the fact that I simply was not strong enough to be doing any high impact exercises, period!! Only do low impact exercise, and slowly increase the intensity of what you are doing (over months, not weeks) Focus more on changing your diet, less on exercise, until you get closer to your goal weight. Also listen to this doctor's talk about successful weight loss strategy, it has nothing to do with exercise: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xAdqLB6bTuQ.html.

Dear Maya, I’ve followed you for a long time and within the past 2 years have gone through my own self love journey and learning how to cope with binge eating disorder. I’ve learned that diets don’t work and that we all need to let go of the idea that happiness comes once we reach the ideal body size we have in our head. In the past , I’ve seen pero like perpetuate toxic diet culture without addressing the mental health side of it all. I was scared to watch and finish this video thinking it was going to be something similar. I’m genuinely surprised and grateful to see it’s not and am very happy that you see your worthy of love and joy. You are beautiful and have always been!

If I could say one thing to Maya, it's that this video of self exposure touched me deeply. I resonate with her frustration and the struggle to be where I will one day be. The fact that she was trying at all says a lot about her. I nearly cried when I saw how she was scared to jump on that stepper thingy and broke her wrist? You can clearly see the struggle there and that alone, made me want to jump through my phone and give her the biggest of hugs. Much love and respect to you Maya! I hope you continue staying strong through this journey we call life.

I still don’t understand how and why trainers expect us to start doing hard exercises right away when we have been a couch potato for a long time. I would start doing walking first and then gradually incorporating more exercises and routines. Right? That’s why people quit so easily. I lost 55 lbs in 2 1/2 years by walking and then I incorporated weights to tone my body. Plus I stop doing diet.

It’s a strategy (a bad one in my opinion) to see how far someone can be pushed both physically and mentally. The theory is to see how many of x exercises/reps you can do when pushed to the limit. That creates a baseline and with a good program you will get to a place where you can do those same amount of reps comfortably and more. I think it works better on people who are already following a routine, but who want to push themselves harder and up their game. For beginners it is a lot (mentally as well as physically), and not the most ideal and sustainable way forward. The two pronged approach with a trainer and a mental health coach will help ease some of the issues there, but overall I think a slower approach is better. On the plus side, it yields fast and dramatic results, which is why it is often used on TV programs. Plus as a rule we are not patient beings so the idea of being able to turn our life around in 3-6 months, tends to be more appealing than the slow but steady approach that will likely take 2-3 years. A trainer who pushes you so hard that you vomit or faint is not very good at their job. If they take this approach they should at the very least be able to tell how far they can push you.
@jenniferarellano2617
@jenniferarellano2617 3 года назад
Yes I’m a health educator and I always tell people to start small! Like the trainer said, for a lot of people, their bodies haven’t moved in a long time and can’t do something they may have been able to do back then. Or they’ve never exercised in their lives. Going so hard so fast is so unrealistic and puts you in a position where you can get hurt. Congrats on your weight loss! You truly know your body and that’s amazing 💖

I recently lost a family member and had thyroid surgery where I staryed to gain weight. I've been struggling to work out and been super hard on myself. Definitely gonna use you as an inspiration to love myself more and take care of me. Thanks Maya! Know your video is appreciated it and you are loved, all the way from Trinidad, know that I can tell you are a beautiful person inside and out. You deserve to be happy! ❤️

I love how transparent you are and continue to be Maya! Makes me so glad to be a supporter of yours. I could definitely relate to so many parts throughout the video. And it just goes to show that I’m not alone in feeling the way I do. You are so inspiring to want to share you experience with the world ❤️ I’m so grateful you put this out when you did because it’s something I’ve been needing to hear for myself that I didn’t know I needed. Makes me wish the video had been longer 😊

After years of yo yo-ing with my weight, I said enough and decided to just focus on being healthy-both mentally and physically. I eat intuitively (no diets or restrictions) and I’ve found a workout routine that I love. Progress has been slow but I remind myself that I haven’t binged and my mental health is better than ever. Patience should be the hardest part of a weight loss journey. Our bodies are capable of taking care of themselves, we just need to treat them right and give them time. This is the longest ive stuck with a “weight lost plan” and I can see myself making a lifestyle out of it.

I do not often cry at videos like this, but girl, this was beautiful, just as you! You are amazing regardless of what you look like and the fact that you dare to open up like this shows just how strong you are! I, too, am an emotional eater and i struggle with the idea of perfection, which means that everytime I fail, it hurts...a lot. Thank you so much for making this video! All the love for you! Keep shining like the star you are!

This just made me cry at the end. I was 216 and am currently 198. The scale hasn't moved and it sucks. This just reminded that I need to love where I am and I haven't been doing that. I sat there with the meditation of "I love myself, Brooke. I'm not going to leave you." It's not about losing weight, it's about how you feel throughout the journey. Thank you for this.

I started exactly at 214 almost 3 months ago. Now I'm 19 down. I'm still an emotional eater, I'm still not where I would like mentally, I can't do heavy fitness because of my crooked back, but Lord know knows how much I want to be better and feel better and I just pray I can keep it up.

There is nothing particularly wrong with being an emotional eater. It's the foods you choose to eat that are harming you. For example, no one emotionally eats carrot sticks, or a big bowl of salad, or an apple. They emotionally eat donuts, cookies, potato chips, and ice cream. Go ahead and eat if you're feeling emotional, but stay away from the processed junk food and you will be ok!

Maya, thank you, thank you THANK YOU for this. I think this may be my favorite wellness journey video that I've watched. I've been struggling with my body and my self image since I was a little girl, and usually when I watch fitness transformations, they inspire me at first and then I'm right back to thinking that I can never accomplish those things because I have so much farther to go compared to everyone else. The unimaginable amount of courage it took to be this vulnerable (in front of a camera! for a video that is being released onto the internet!) really touched me. You said that you were sure someone out there needed to see this video - and I definitely feel like I'm one of those someones. I am so proud of you for being open about your mental and emotional struggles, and for all of the progress you've made! You're an inspiration for all of us trying to prove to ourselves that we are worthy of our own love.

Ohh man, i can totally understand why breaking her hand brought on such an emotional response. Battling the urge to "at least try" with a feeling of not being ready, not knowing which voice to listen to, is it fear, the pressure of wanting to please others? Or is it intuition and wisdom? And then finally deciding to take a leap of faith, and then they outcome is not what you expect and feel like you failed. OMG, thats so, so, so painful. I feel like this video captured so beautifully the TRUE experience of what its like to self-heal and confronting emotional baggage. It's NOT this ooo self-care, bubble bath, affirmations, LINEAR process to progress. That shit goes up, down, sideways, backtracks over and over again. You find shit is there that you didn't even know was there. You learn lessons you sometimes wish you didn't have to. It can feel desperately awful sometimes but the only way out, is through. Maya, you are such a beautiful, brave soul and i understand why it was so difficult to edit this video and put it out there. This path is not for the weak. Your experience is not one that you're alone with. So many people are searching for the unattainable, the Photoshopped, the straight up LIES marketed that cause such a heavy burden of unrealistic expectations. Instead, you shared with us such an honest, raw, accurate portrayal of what this journey is like. It was refreshing because its real. Thank you 💙

Oh WOW, this video hit me like a Mack truck! I don't want to trigger anyone, so if you have issues with food and/or excercise and are not in a good place, skip this message. This is going to be a very raw and personal post, and I feel very uncomfortable doing this, but seeing Maya's strength is compelling me to do it. First, I have been in a very dark place for 15 years. The video touched me, because I could absolutely relate to EVERYTHING she was saying. I too beat myself up. I too WAS very emotional. However, I let negative thinking and the mental abuse of others take over to where I'm just numb. My health is deteriorating because of my unhealthy ways. I am about to restart binge eating counseling. I dropped out at the beginning of the Corona virus, because I just got too overwhelmed. However, this video has awakened something. A will to fight back against my own self destruction??? If you are reading this Maya, Cat, and/or Jess, thank you so much. I'm going to save this video so I can keep watching it whenever I feel the need to. Y'all have inspired me. Now it's up to me.

You are not alone! I also am going though a "mental restart" I'm 29 and have lived with depression and a binge eating disorder for at least 20 years. But about a month ago I made the decision to make a change not only for myself but for my two little girls, I want to be around for them and I want them to have a better mother. It hasn't been easy, I have wanted to quit several times and after watching Maya's journey I'm sure I'll get through it and so will you. It won't be easy but it's up to us to finally beat the demons that have followed us for years. Sorry I know we don't know each other but your post hit me so I had to reach out. Hope you're doing good.

Change the food you eat. Don't eat processed food. Eat whole natural foods that have not had the water or fibre removed, and have not been milled into a flour. Cut oil out of your diet completely. It is a highly processed food. Eat starchy whole foods for satiety like potatoes, brown rice, and sweet potatoes. Eat whole fruits and vegetables. Leave out refined sugar, oil, and flour products. Listen to this talk by Dr. Dough Lisle called "How to Lose Weight Without Losing your Mind". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xAdqLB6bTuQ.html It is literally the best weight loss advice I have ever heard, and it's not complicated.

I'm over here crying that I'm so unhealthy because I feel like I'm dying after starting to work out again because of how out of shape I am and struggling with the motivation to even get up and work out in the first place. Maya this video was so helpful, you do not understand. The people that you worked out with, what they are doing is beautiful and is so helpful compared to the trainers I've worked with before telling me to suck it up and keep going. That may work for some people but for some of us it's extremely mental. This video came at the perfect time. I keep second guessing myself and hearing you share what you've felt and what you were going through while finding the motivation to keep going and what was stopping you is so helpful to the people who experience the same.
