Years ago my wife and I went to a tournament, for a game no longer around. She lost every game and ended up winning the "Damn it I tried" award. The prize was a copy of every force book for the game.

You’ve done really well to keep up your enthusiasm despite the games you play. Whatever its problems, getting tabled by Guard repeatedly isn’t how most people experience 40K in 10th. Glad you got more variety!

Dude, make a series of you inviting a highly competetive player on your channel (one not from your local friende group), where you go through your thought process in every turn and let them be brutally honest about the choices and what they would do different. It could do wonders for you and us as the viewers, being a learning experience for everyone.

Next time run you could run your templar as the dark angels box. Redemptor + incursors is pretty hard to counter.

that stance of "I had fun and someone had to be last" is one of the healthiest things for the hobby and competitive games in general. I almost never win in my commander pod but thats ok because I had fun and someone got to win

It was nice meeting you at the tournament. Hope to see you at the shop more. Tom tried his best with the terrain but I feel any more and vehicles wouldn’t have been able to move. My demons felt like they had enough cover.

I found that my enjoyment of Blood Bowl went up when I got involved in a league and started going to local tournaments. It's hard when you play someone on a weekly basis who just stomps you into the ground.

Combat patrol is simple and fun, if you accept that this is just a quick simple game. But the balance is a joke, and you can pretty much predict the outcome of every battle before it start. Which is a really shame, and it might knock the interest out of newcomers. I feel like again GW didn't do the work they were supposed to do.

It was nice to meet you and I have never had a bad tournament experience. Most are there to have fun.

The bloodangels combat patrol is a really nice space marines combat patrol, but aggressors and incursors are not bloodangels themed units at all. I really wish there were some assault intercessors or something that can fly in there

I enjoy how positive you are like you'll be telling the story like you're gonna win and then you drop the bomb that you lost and you're ecstatic and still happy. I really respect that quality

I played in a combat patrol league in my local warhammer store recently, and I think it's my favorite way to play 10th edition! I personally found that combat patrol is pretty well balanced, with like, a couple of exceptions, and even those can be matchup dependent. I think it comes down to knowing how your combat patrol works, since patrols with weaker units tend to get better stratagems and enhancements, and stronger ones get less interesting things to use but their units are generally better. Also something to note is all Battleline units in combat patrol have sticky objectives, which is a game-changer for a lot of the boxes! It's a fast, easy way to start playing 40k, and it really gives you a sense of what each army is like. I hope to play more tournaments and leagues of it soon!

Awesome! I did this at a GW store a few weeks ago. The store manager had planned a Combat Patrol tournament too. 1 day, 3 games, points for different stuff. Due to locals not wanting something serious, they canned the tournament in favour of a casual CP day. We had 8 people turn up to play. I played Tyranids as it was the only CP army I had (mostly) painted. My first game was against... Tyranids! I lost that semi-narrowly. We both didn't use Shadow of the Warp! I love the Endless Swarm strat! My second game was against Necrons... yeah the Tomb Stalker is a beast! It killed my Psycophage from across the board. His Tachyon arrow missed. I won that game. In fact, I'm building a Necron CP right now. That was the end of my day... as you noted, Tyranids take a bit longer to play... so the Tyranids vs Tyranids game took twice as long. After I had completed the game vs Necrons I watched the game on the next table. Talk about getting tabled? Tau vs Drukhari. Drukhari went first and tabled the Tau player in their second turn... the Tau player didn't even get their own second turn! Two of those boats and tank shock were clear MVPs. I'm loving the concept of CP games. I've got CSM and Votann to build next. I also want to buy Tau and I'll just need the Rhino and I can build the Sisters one too. I sincerely hope GW address some of the imbalance in it. I know it's only supposed to be a gateway to big 40k.... but as you pointed out, being able to play lots of short games is really great. If you're going to lose, the loss doesn't drag out for over an hour. It really is a perfect sized game, with big 40k scratching the itch once you've got enough models to play.

Yeah Luigi and his GSC are pretty tough. played him a few times already. He has his army pretty much mastered.

Glad you had so much fun! I would love to see a vid of a competitive expert coach you through a game, explaining choices and options as you play it out against someone else. It would be really interesting.

Sounds a lot like my first tournament a month ago! 17-75, 13-72, 49-79. Got my ass kicked, but it was good fun. I came dead last and earned the, “wooden spoon” award for lowest score overall.

I also had a hard time scoring points in my Necron combat patrol tournament! I still had a blast but I had a similar experience. My Doomstalker went toe to toe with a grey knight dread knight and survived for the whole 4 turns thanks to its invulnerable saves and then exploded on the last turn taking out the dread knight

Jay, my friends and me would love to play with you...sadly we are in the UK lol! But we been doing tournaments for the last couple years and we love it. We got our next two new players to join us the Nottingham GT in January for their first tournament and we can't wait!

I wonder if I could still run the old Necron Combat Patrol. The Ols CP is next on my 2 Do list and I would love to be able to switch between the new and old CP .

Just did a 2k tourney over the weekend, parking lot Guard were a nightmare lol. So much artillery and tanks and orders that my Warriors got blasted off by turn 2. Feels bad man

I went to the Tacoma Open back in July to enter the Blood Bowl tournament. It wasn't my first ever tournament, but my first one this millennium. I came in 2nd or 3rd... from last. 😸 I know I didn't come in last, because the one guy I beat said he had lost every game, and I also had a couple of draws

Much like the law no one knows all the 40k rules or even well. Hell I remember someone did a full breakdown of literally the two best players in the world, both undefeated at the time thru a circuit of like 50 games, playing in grand finals; they found no less than like 100 rules errors and contentious interpretations

I got a combat patrol tournament i want to sign up for, but im using the Leviathan one and thats probably the worst one, but I'm doing for the awesome games!

Combat Patrol seems like it should be a good way to try out different armies. I know I want to get the space marine half of the ultimate starter since it's basically a kill team. Honestly the Dark Angels one is a kill team with the guy who didn't survive the last mission in kill team floating around in the dreadnaught.

I think you have to take into account how Combat Patrol came to be. Way back when, GW sold the Combat Patrols as a 'discounted box set bundle' to move units/models that they wanted to push on the market. Much later, GW came up with the Combat Patrol rules for 10th edition and have tried to leverage that against the existing product line, making unique Data Sheets which TRY to balance the units they're stuck with in the current shipping CP boxes. Obviously the Necron one had to be canceled/dropped/replaced because the Flyer wasn't compatible with the new CP rules. And the Marine and Tyranid ones got replaced with the new Leviathan sprues. It is a shame that Combat Patrol isn't being given the same attention in terms of Balance edits as the full 40k game; especially in the perspective of Combat Patrol being suggested as an onramp, a gateway, to full 40k.

I played my first combat patrol and 10th game. Lost all 3 games. 1 I lost becuase I made mistakes (all part of learning) also infinite guard respawn for 1 cp very OP in small games. 1 loss just could not bring down the marines dread 1 loss becuase I got completely tabled in 2nd round Had fun, looking forward to more 10th but admech not balanced nicely it seemed.

When James Workshop talks about balance, they mean one thing only: point value. Anyone who games know that point values - while "useful" don't balance anything. In addition, GW is famous for constantly changing points, rules, errata, FAQ's, cards, missions, even fundamental game rules in their editions. There is no actual balance in 40K. It is a myth. The only way you can achieve any form of balance is knowing your army and your opponents and having a discussion. Agreeing on a points value and then discussing what you're taking to ensure the game won't be a super lopsided game. That's about as close as you'll get.

I think Combat Patrol is slowly catching on. Its just a new edition came out and you have those who still are knee deep in killteam and warcry. I say give it next year and especially the next edition for CP to be really popular. I havent touched a lick of 10th ed due to waiting on the Necron Codex but I have 2 CP I have been thoroughly enjoying for the shorter smaller games. And what makes it better are they arent two random CP. They are part of my largest army in Necrons and my new starting army for next year in LoV. So its nice to be able to play my two favorite armies while I continue building up my Necrons and preparing for LoV next year. I actually think LoV will get a new updated CP when they get their second wave of models and new codex. SM, Tyranids, and Necrons all have a new one so its possible we could see others get updated this edition for a better box

Also i did bring a folding chair which they said i cant sit on it due to space but they can store it in the office so at the end of the game, the others got dice and a figure, but i got a folding chair😎😎😎 (back)

I once played against someone with THAT 5th ed double-lash list, two "Slaanesh" DPs (quotations because one was clearly dedicated to Nurgle and the other was Iron Warriors), plague marines and obliterators. Not only was his army horrible to play against but he was such a massive dick, grabbing my models without permission, rolling and picking up his dice too fast to read them. Insult to injury, despite the clearly non-wysiwyg and not fully painted army (the Iron Warriors DP was just pure silver) he won best painted. Found out later he was very chummy with one of the organisers. Ruined tournaments for me since!

Trying to force balance for preset boxsets of models, which were not specifically selected for this purpose, typifies GW's ridiculous attempts at making rules. It's nice you're still having fun with it, I would not have the patience.
