The likely hood is that he might not even get approved again for finance after doing god knows how many searches for it. With his credit rating being bad each search has taken his score down instantly. I recon he has seen another cheaper car that he wants. Because let’s be honest the small stone chips could have been taken into account and had some small discount applied over the phone say £100.

@Cookatron

@@koolerking440 it wouldn’t surprise me if he assumed the transport costs would be reimbursed also. I drove 4 hours to collect a car that I bought unseen 2 months ago. There was some small marks and scuffs inside the interior obviously not noticeable or stated in any of the pictures or videos. The car was 25k as well but I never made any comment about it seeing that the cars used. The dealer also didn’t change the air filter with the service that they stamped the book for. I just bought a new filter and put it in myself for £15. The oil was changed and that was the main thing. Sometimes things aren’t worth getting frustrated over or arguing about. If you want a car unmarked unfortunately you have to buy new and the car I wanted was £42k new which was out my price range.

A tactic was used by a garage who had a car I wanted to buy over distance selling arrangements. They said "Oh Bob who delivers all our cars isn't available at the moment." So I travelled to the other end of the country to buy it in person. It was a great car and I kept it for four years. Was obvious they just didn't want to distance sell though. Maybe understandably so.

As an former salesman for a main dealer, I can confirm that while they will sell to the first person that commits to buying, they generally are not interested in distance selling. If they have a car prepped and up for sale, a popular model at the right price, they know that if you don't buy it today someone else will before the week is out for a lot less hassle and likely more profit. Even larger dealers with multiple sites and own transporters will only move group stock around the country if something is not selling and demand is higher in another part of the country. If they move a particular car for a particular customer it would only be sanctioned by management if enough work had been done by the sales person building a relationship with the customer to give them confidence of the likelihood of sale. However if the salesmanager where the car is located has hot prospects interested in that car you can bet they won't let it go. As for arranging trade sales between independent franchised main dealers because a customer has seen his dream car at another dealer the other end of the country and only wants to deal with you, now that is a complete pain in the ass, something you only ever contemplate doing on a very slow month.

I used to work for a main dealer, we had a fleet of demonstrators and courtesy cars that went on the forecourt from 3 months old several thousands of pounds cheaper than new. I remember a couple haggling over a small stone chip on the bonnet so small it had to be pulled into the workshop and viewed under lights, the car had covered around 5k and was used as a courtesy car which compared to the demonstrators had a harder life, nevertheless this thing was mint and could have been put in the showroom. At the same time I had another customer turn up early for their appointment to look at that particular car, I told the customer that with respect it had been on the road for a few months and we did sell new ones without stone chips it would cost them an extra £4000. As soon as they saw me acknowledge the other couple who were looking closely at the car the suddenly changed their point of view. The irony is that morning I had handed over a brand new car to a customer that had been in the bodyshop a week earlier as it was damaged coming off the transporter.

I like an honest salesman, made the mistake of buying my car from a well known car supermarket, when I went to pick it up they had damaged it the lower sill cover was protruding about 2" from the wheel arch, when pointed out they said I had a good eye as they hadn't seen it. Promised it would have full valet and service before pick up as well. When finally got it, there were sweet wrappers and all sorts of crap still in it from the previous owner and their kids. As for the service coolant level at min, brake fluid at below min, oil just above half on dipstick and jet black, returned for work. Finally got it after almost a month after purchase will never make that mistake again.

This chap sounds like one of my former clients, before retiring I was a Charteed Accountant. The client had an HMRC enquiry. Perfect result, no more tax to pay, HMRC didn't get to see persoanl records but client said he didn't want to pay me because he thought as a client of a qualified accountant he should not be subject to HMRC enquiries. I referred him to my Institutes complaint service who wanted a deposit of £500 from him to hear the complaint. The deposit was more than my very modest fee( £350) so he paid up folloing which I sacked him. Thank heaven I didin't have to deal with the "general public" Love your blogs James, keep up the great work

You should use a different invoice format for distance sold vehicles where non refundable costs are bumped up i.e. delivery and an allowance for inspection/valeting costs if the vehicle is subsequently returned. The buyer will think twice about returning the vehicle if he/she is going to lose a chunk.

If he treats other people like that I can't see him getting far in life. I used to work in retail selling computers, people would break it then say I have a warrantree! (they can't even say warranty properly) and then expect you to pick up the tab for them breaking it. I used to say to them if you take a car out of a show room crash it in to a tree your warrantree is as worthless as the tree you hit. You need insurance and you should insure everything you touch and you were not insured for this purchase, goodbye.

You have my deepest sympathies regarding the returned focus sale. I’m the guy that bought the savanna from you and dealing with you was my easiest car purchase ever. I had a diesel focus estate in 2013 brand new in I think the same colour “Mars Red metallic”. It went for paint before I collected it from the dealer with just 7 miles on. I still have a 1.6 2013 focus estate, as they are great cars. My current one has had paint and only covered 47,000 miles since new.

Frustrating to say the least. Sort of reminds me of a story from my past. During the recession of the early 90's I found myself working for an insolvency practice. The last insolvency I was involved with was a motorcycle dealership, At first it looked like we had a meaty auction sale ahead of us but all new bikes were stocked on a sale or return basis and were immediately reclaimed by the manufacturers. The next batch of decent bikes turned out to be there on a brokerage basis to be sold on behalf of their owners. These included a nearly new modern Triumph and we considered that an auction still remained viable as long as this machine was part of it. We wrote to all owners and explained that we could sell their bikes on their behalf should they wish us to do so with a reserve set by them on the proviso that sufficient numbers including the Triumph agreed. All said yes except for the owner of the Triumph who failed to respond after several attempts to reach him. Eventually the owners father called us to explain that his son had emigrated and left the bike with him to sell. He wasn't very happy with the situation. Despite us advising that we were happy to arrange for it's sale at auction with a reserve that he would be happy with he argued that he would arrange collection of the bike and advised that he would seek reimbursement for any damage that the bike may have suffered whilst in possession of the dealership. We assured him that there was no apparent damage to the bike but any claims should be directed to the official receiver for consideration alongside all other outstanding liabilities, nevertheless he was at liberty to collect the bike should he wish to do so. He called us again to advise that the bike would be collected at 8.00am the following day by the AA. We had to alter our plans to accommodate this but arranged to be on site at 8.00am. The AA eventually arrived at about midday along with the owners father.. Things began to look ominous when the AA driver said he was expecting to collect a Triumph car and that he had never transported a motorcycle before. We advised that we were not allowed to touch the bike during it's removal from the premises but suggested that to straddle it and walk it out from the showroom would most likely be the best way forward. After thinking it over the driver attempted to do as was suggested but dropped the bike breaking the fairing and the indicator and bending the foot rest. The owners father was furious and we did the best we could not to smile, The driver eventually got the bike out to the delivery truck which was parked in a bus stop lay by with lights flashing top. front and back. Again he seemed perplexed with what to do next. We suggested that there was apparently a plate in the centre of the truck which could be removed to locate one wheel of the bike which if securely strapped to the sides should not move in transit. He didn't like that idea. Instead he tied the bike to the headboard. We weren't there to see it's eventual delivery but could only guess that tying it directly to the headboard would only create further damage. To cap it all the truck which had by now been parked for some 3 hours with all lights flashing failed to start. The driver had to jump start himself from a battery pack before he could leave.

"I will come by train" and then it does not happen; "I need finance", did not say that before and it fails first time around; "I will pick it up", and it does not happen twice... This could only end up in tears. If you get a guy who puts the money on the table and says right off the bat "send it up, I will pay the transport". Is probably going to work fine. Hi James interesting vlog. You are 100% genuine and more than 100% fair with all of your customers! I would 100% happily purchase a vehicle off you especially as there are so many snakes about in this game, and they are just out to make a quick buck, but I'm glad to say not you! I'm throwing this out there and actually wondered if the person had ulterior motives from the outset, especially as he quickly changed his mind about a cash purchase, then the customer was let down by their finance company, so all of a sudden they wish to use a finance company that you can suggest, then the sudden change of mind about the purchase and finally landing up having the 9K refunded by yourself. Even with paying the delivery fees both ways they are suddenly 8K up on finance that they now have admittedly, they don't have a car but they have the cash instead. Not sure if I'm making sense or even if this is possible but it just makes you wonder. Any thoughts on my theory? Thanks regards Emyr.

Having recently bought a used car (from a dealer) I know if both parties are reasonable it can go smoothly. I saw the car, was not impatient to drive it, so the dealer took me for a few minutes drive, part way through I said I will have it. Got back to the office, paid for the car, as a "freebie" after they MOTed it they supplied and fitted my personal plate and I collected it and drove off into the sunset. I did see a tiny mark in the paintwork, about 1cm long, I just kind of laughed, that is old cars for you... Just common sense, I knew I was buying a used car, but I know they are in business to make a profit. Some "buyers" are basically time wasters, I am surprised he did not want to knock the price down. A friend sold a very nice Honda Blackbird on Ebay, the chancers that turned up tried to knock the price down very aggressively. The bike had always been regularly serviced, the potential buyer claimed the oil being so clean indicated that my friend was hiding something (it had been serviced a few days earlier). They offered him £500 for it... Of course the hassle is that he has to then relist the bike etc etc. That Focus looks very tidy indeed, the whole story seems fishy, sounds as though he actually could not afford it or readily get finance.

This is exactly why I only trade to trade nowadays. Margins are smaller but life is much simpler and stress free. I only retail to existing good customers. And I certainly leave the world of finance to the big dealers as more often than not, especially when people struggle to get the finance, they are more picky and troublesome than a cash buyer. Mainly because they see a 4 grand car as a fortune but in reality it's 1 step above a banger. Far from brand new. And I would never describe any car as immaculate, mint, out the box. The best description I'd ever give is above average condition but has wear, tear and blemishes to be expected for the age and mileage of the vehicle.

Sorry to hear about your problems. Sounds like a carry on. I've just bought a ford focus four weeks ago. It's currently full of water after all the rain. On the rear bumper there's loads of holes drilled. So they knew about it leaking and sold me it anyway. Now I'm stuck with a car that is soaked inside. And is dangerous as it keeps misting up.

I agree with others comments. Aside from everything else, there's no way having a vehicle transported is cheaper than going and getting it yourself and enjoying (if it's not a duffer) the drive home with your prize. The colour match seems good but the finish was a little flat on the n/s rear; that said it's in nice condition for a 10 year old car. Sometimes it is the big main dealers selling luxury cars you need to be wary of. I've bought a few cars at a distance and generally things have all been good. Unfortunately about 4 years ago I bought a less than 3 year old Lexus 450h from a Lexus Main Dealership over a hundred miles from home. My trade in was perfect (I was doing 400 business miles a week, buying 1-2 year old low mileage cars under warranty and then moving them on after about 10 months). I was assured the 450h was perfect bodywise (as you would expect on a less than 3 year old Lexus coming through their 'Approved Scheme'). Sadly it was raining when I picked the car up and until the following day when it was dry I hadn't noticed a number of small scuffs in the silver paintwork , all of which you could catch a fingernail in. Worse than that I found the paint was bubbling in the middle of the tailgate through rust underneath the paint!! . The upshot was that the whole nearside of the car had to be repainted, and the tailgate was replaced under manufacturers warranty by the dealership.

James like I commented on another one of your videos about the dealer I deal with in Canada. I only deal with this Ford Dealership because they are so honest. in the last 10 years I have purchased 3 vehicles from this dealership. My son has bought 2 vehicle from them in the last 3 years. My daughter bought her first car from them. Friends of my kids have bought a few cars from this dealership. Now to be transparent I do get a $500.00 bonus from them every time I bring them a new customer. But even if they did not do that I would have no issue and have not had any issues dealing with them. They are honest and keep any promises they may have made. They go above and beyond for their customers. In my opinion it is really hard to find a used car dealer that is so customer focused. There are a lot of shady used car dealers out there. My advise to anyone is if you find a used car dealer that is extremely honest, keeps their words and does not screw you around, you have no reason to shop anywhere else. Now they maybe a little more expensive than a dealer down the street, there is probably a reason for that.

Your a top bloke and i would definitely buy a car from you! But the paint finish on that door is not great to say the least looks very dry on the top edge and the orange peel is pretty bad as well i would imagine the chap is correct and is full of filler as well. If that's ruby red as well its a tri stage paint and not cheap to repair as its a nightmare to blend. So he had a good eye and new what to look for some have to give him some credit. Same to you james you put the effort in with the videos but you did say you didn't tell him it had bad paint on the door and missed the bits on the boot some how? And if you did then non of this would of happened i doubt because he would of said no due to the paint defects.

Years ago, I worked for a couple of motor traders that had one of those "Pain in the engine" customers, who drove them to phoning each other up at annoying times, imitating the compulsive complainers voice, describing yet another fault, which started as a laugh, but did not stop the yelper ! On another occasion, looking out the office window, a customer was kicking the tyres and sills of a car. One of the dealers went out and asked the customer which was HIS car, which was pointed out . He then went over and gave the sills a good kicking and asked him how did he like it.? Eventually, they both gave the car trade up and migrated to Wales, whether they're still there, is not known. But they sold me 3 vehicles at really low cost before they legged it !

I always go out with the cars bud, last Fri,in all that bad rain we set off to Burnley with a Picasso, got back went to Aston Barclays to pick up 2 cars, that night took another car out to North Yorkshire, called at weather spoons on the way back,350 miles in the day ,but 2 bought,2 sold, off at 5.30 am back at 11 pm,i think if you go in person without taking prior full money it's not a distance sale (?) I don't think it's ever not worked out tbh,i got into it in covid days, just sending a guy with a transporter isn't going to work out, customers got a relationship with you, their buying you as well as the car,tbh that doors been painted and not flatted back and at low miles and 9k the guys got a right for it to be mint, hed have probably stood for the boot chips, back in the day we'd have used stick on chrome trim to hide them (90s)

I think a big problem you’re setting yourself up for is trying to please people and making the car up here as perfect as possible. When I sell a car and I take photos, I don’t bother with all of the tiny details like rock chips or small scratches for example. It’s implied that I’m selling a 6 to 10-year-old car with miles on it. I’m not selling something that’s been sitting in a museum. 99 out of 100 no one says anything and the customer understands that it’s a used car. But if I sit there and I show photos of every single little bit of damage on the car, there’s a good chance that I’ll miss something just like you did in this video where you didn’t notice that the door had been painted and that the tailgatehad some rock chips. Now the Customer can hold that over your head where as if I do what I did they never say anything and they don’t really care.

It us so frustrating to try and go the extra mile in terms of presentation and preparation for these things to crop up. Like you I no longer offer a delivery and positively encourage viewings prior to any purchase for exactly this reason. I also never take 'holding' deposits as they are now viewed as another from of distance selling which means they get the same opportunity to reject as if it was delivered !! So all purchases are now on site and signed for on site too which is critical. It feels alien to me to play the game like this but unfortunately the small minority of customers are abusing the laws to make good a poor decision on their part for which they now have to take no responsibility whatsoever. Keep up the good work and the videos. I take solace from the fact I am not alone !!

I would say warning signs flash up when someone asks that many questions about a ten year old motor. I am very detail orientated, but I am also realistic about minor details on old cars - and I would still come and see a car with my own eyes so I am responsible for the decision to buy. I saw a Toyota at a main dealer the other week, look great in pics but in reality it had a terrible rear door/sill repair, you really could see the filler it was such a poor job, which you just can't see unless you have the car in front of you. Buy distance, take the risk, end of.
