This was taken during the Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, on April 16th, 2015.
Ian McDiarmid was asked to read Emperor Palpatine's monologue from the end of the book "William Shakespeare's The Jedi Doth Return (William Shakespeare's Star Wars)" during his panel at the Star Wars Celebration Anaheim.
Hearing him go into his Palpatine voice was incredible, in person you could feel the power of his voice and it sent chills through everyone's spines. He's such an amazing actor, was a great experience.

Ian McDiarmid is Palpatine. Nobody else will ever be able to channel and portray the magnificent wickedness of this legendary supervillain with such master class skill.

Sam Witwer does a great Palpatine voice too, but not as good as Ian. Still, I can't imagine anyone other than Ian portraying Palpatine in live action.

Sam Witwer is awesome and his lines in Battlefront II are very pleasant to listen to. But Ian is the one and only true Senate.

Sadly Ian McD isn't immortal and eventually he'll want to/has to retire from it all. I'm sure any replacement will do him justice and with respect, they'll find the right one if they ever need a live action Palpatine and/or Sidious ever again. And in addition, that doesn't mean the others suck or are offensive in any way whatsoever. An appropriate amount of respect and recognition should also be given to the others who also did Ian's Palpatine justice and/or to the best of their abilities all across beautiful Star Wars mediums such as The Clone Wars, Clone Wars, Force Unleashed games and more. Sam Witwer is the closest to matching Ian's voice, though we've never heard his Palpatine voice yet. Just his Sidious/Emperor voice all throughout the years. Ian Abercrombie, Tim Curry and Nick Jameson all did phenomenal in TCW and CW shows. I still enjoy, respect, appreciate, admire and love their voice overs a lot too. Ian McD himself is a kind man and he obviously respects his fellow colleagues and has a great time with them as friends too. We should do the same as well. :)

Arguable, because it’s your favorite movie doesn’t mean he has to be the most evil. Search and watch other movies. Is he evil? Yes, he is also scary. But not the most evil in cinematic history, that’s a hyperbole

That's gotta be the greatest character/ performance ever. He truly transforms from a pleasant, mild mannered guy to an abysmal, malicious, evil tyrant. Coursing with vileness.

Totally agree, the switch literally had the audience (and myself) get the tingles (you can hear people reacting after he says "you fool"). Total pro, hopefully he's in the new movie and can reprise this master class of acting.

Interesting enough, his most famous role before getting involved in a galaxy far, far away was the RSC's much lauded production of "Macbeth". He played Ross, who likewise is conspiring in the final scene rising to the throne!

Ian is Palpatine. After the Ep III premiere, everyone cheered for Hayden, Natalie, & Ewan during meet & greet event. But they booed Ian, not because his acting was bad, it's because he embodied Palpatine so well on screen, people brought it to real life. He played the purely evil mastermind/tyrant so well, the fans just booed him on stage. That moment was hilarious but I felt kind of sad for Ian, too.

Ian both performed and stage directed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the former for which he received multiple awards. No one better suited to read Shakespearean versions of Emperor Palpatine’s dialogue.

I played Luke Skywalker and a bunch of other characters (Emperor in V, Greedo, Boba, Vader in SW, and a bunch of Imperial Officers) in a staged reading of William Shakespeare’s Star Wars’ original trilogy, and they are as perfect to read as the original screenplay. BUY THEM!!!!!!
