Have you tried out the Blue Ice Aero and Aero Lite screws? They're my new favorite

I don’t quite follow your logic on using longer screws in ice with air pockets. Let’s say there is an air pocket 10 from the surface: a 10cm screw will have full thread engagement. A 16 cm screw will only have 4cm of thread engagement. So, in that case, the 10 cm screw would be stronger! Of course, you don’t know what depth there might be an air pocket, but I do know I’d rather start placing a 10 cm screw, and realize I hit air 5cm in, back it out and move to a new spot, rather than placing a 19 cm screw, hit an air pocket 15 cm deep, and have to unscrew all that and replace. That’s a lot more work! Am I missing something?

The solution I ultimately came up with for the Petzl condoms is to girth hitch a produce rubber band through the little holes on the side. When you stick the condom into place, pull the rubber band over the hanger. Not only does it keep it in place while it hangs from your harness, you can hook it to your ice clipper when you use the screw.
