Whirlpool ice maker, about 1 year old quick making ice after switching the ice maker off for an hour when changing the filter and purging the carbon. Switched the ice maker back on and waited several days noticing no ice. We placed a piece of wax paper in the bin so we would know if fresh ice was dropped. Investigated and found the water outlet to be frozen clogged

I can't thank you enough for this video! I have been struggling with this issue for months and months. Whirlpool wanted to replace the door for > $1000. I originally thought it was a broken wire at the bottom based on other users experiences. I am so glad that it was this easy to resolve.
@jimdavis6833

Mine had 3 broken wires at the bottom of the door. It took me about 30 minutes to fix. I had some wire laying around, so i cut 3 pieces about 3/4" long. I slid 1 1/2" pieces of shrink wrap over the wires at the harness ends of the wires, soldered the new wires at both ends, and slipped the shrink wrap over the exposed wires and used a cigarette lighter to shrink the wraps. My icemaker has been working like new for the past 3 months.

You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. I've been fixing things a long time, and I would never have figured this one out. I hate to think how many people have been ripped off on having their ice-maker and/or solenoid replaced, when this was the actual problem.. For those attempting it, I would add that a hair dryer works just fine, and the copper wire, because of its heat conductivity, makes short work of thawing the ice blockage. Mine froze up unexpectedly, and has never done this before. I would add though, my wife had recently placed a jumbo bag of frozen strawberries (football size) on the shelf next to the ice maker. It may even have been in contact with it. I believe this initiated the freeze-up. Now my wife thinks I know what I am doing, which is priceless. Thanks man!

Thank you so much for posting this video. I have the same fridge as you. Mine is a year and nine months old and the ice maker quit making ice a couple of weeks ago. I could hear it going through its cycle, but ice production was almost nil. I took the cover off and saw that the water spout was iced over, so I melted the ice that I could see, but still no ice production. Then I found your video. I did what you said, using a copper wire to melt the ice that was plugging the hole, and that fixed it. I have ice again. Thanks for your help. BTW, great job on recording a view of the hole. It's hard to see it way back up in there, but you got a good shot of it.

We have used your video two times now to fix our icemaker. Sometimes just a hairdryer will clear the ice but on two occasions we have had to use a wire . I used a wire paper clip. This last time the icemaker stopped after we changed the water filter as you mentioned in your video. Your video and explanation were well done.

Ice Maker is working!! My Kenmore/Whirlpool Ice Maker stopped making ice at maybe 2 years old. Three or four times it would start working again after a few months and then stop after a week or so. I thought it might be a frozen water supply line and actually pulled out the Ice bucket and blew hot air up into the covered mechanism with a heat gun. After watching your video I am very embarrassed that I didn’t see/know that by removing 4 screws I could expose the entire mechanism and the water supply line! And with the cover off I could see a small amount of ice in the supply line and easily remove the ice. Knowledge is power! Thanks for the info.

Thank you. Mine is a wrs588fixz00. I removed the container to clean, dry and it quit making ice. After your video, I found an ice plug. Bit of heat gun action, a few picks on it with narrow steak knife and I got the plug out. With heat gun, apply bit of heat, pause pointing away, bit of direct heat, pause, repeating with a few pokes with a steak knife to work the ice plug. Took me no longer than a couple minutes. Watch the screws. Put a paper towel to catch the screws. Also, the screws are cheap pot metal and will deform easily so be careful. Wipe the container gently before reassembly.

How long til it made ice , how long did you know if this fixed the problem
@chorisonoma5229
@chorisonoma5229 Год назад
This problem can be caused because the water valve to the ice maker is not shutting off completely. This allows a slow drip at the ice maker which does not flow fast as when it would normally when filling the ice tray. The slow drip can end up freezing in the fill tube.

The rotating gear in the bottom of the ice tray wasn’t interlocking tightly with the motor gear in the door…on my Whirlpool fridge. I looked on the Whirlpool site to buy the gear and all they had was the whole ice tray door for some $267.00. So I found a thin washer that fit between the ice tray gear which essentially pushed the upper gear down into the lower gear tightly and it works perfect! Cost me nothing! You only remove the one screw that holds the ice tray cog/gear…remove the gear…install the washer and put the gear/screw back in…easy! Save yourself a chunk of money.

OK, I have the same model and ice stopped a few weeks ago. I was so happy to find this video....tried it this morning BUT of course my luck, still didn't work. Never had a drop of water come out as I put the hot wire in and worked it for a while. Also used a hair dryer for quite a bit. Is it possible that the line is still frozen past the point where I stick the hot wire in? It did feel like the hot wire was going thru ice as I inserted it but it's either still frozen beyond that point, OR it is another issue causing the ice not to work.....just not sure now. Very frustrated.

I solved the problem already. I fount the reservoir for the ice maker, located in the fresh food compartment had a connector that was unseated. This caused water to leak into the fresh food compartment during the ice maker fill event. I believe this was caused when water in it froze as a result of the cold air diverter valve failure. Everything in the fresh food side was freezing even though I set the temperature to the minimum setting of 45F.

I found a solution to the freeze-up by using aluminum foil to create an insulator around the water outlet. It appears there could have been such a feature designed but the part was left out

What’s it mean when the unit is making ice but won’t dispense it? Can hear the motor working but just makes a clunking noise and no ice comes out
@neuromanglers
@neuromanglers 2 года назад
That is usually simple to correct when ice sticks together and jams up in the dispenser chute. I remove the entire ice cube storage bin, it pivots out and lift up to remove. Dump out all the ice into a bowl or bag if you want to save it and put the tray back into position. You may need to wash the storage bin and if you do, make sure it is totally dry before installing it back into the freezer
@lovedancemoms
@lovedancemoms 2 года назад
@@neuromanglers thank you! Yes you are right. Ice keeps melting at the bottom of the bin and hardening around the auger. We keep cleaning it out and clearing it but continues to do the same thing. Tried making the freezer colder but hasn’t helped. I think maybe that flapper in the ice chute might need replacing? Not sealing off anymore? Motor works. Checked auger and it spins when no ice build up.

when I made the aluminum insulator, I loosely folded the aluminum several times trapping air in between the layers and then molding it carefully around the opening and it has worked for me going on a year or more. It appears to me that it was designed to have some sort of insulator shield by the way it was made
@109harold
@109harold Год назад
@@neuromanglers yes I agree that’s why I stuffed insulation in the open area and around the tube thinking that would be even better but still freezes up I wonder if there is a sensor or a line warmer that’s bad that keeps the line from freezing
@neuromanglers
@neuromanglers Год назад
I would try the insulation again, the idea is to not fill the void around the spout but to create a pocket of air and shield it from the cold air
@109harold
@109harold Год назад
@@neuromanglers ok I will pull the insulation air and just wrap with aluminum foil , if that doesn’t work I guess I’ll have to call “the man”

it is difficult to see when the water line is frozen, you will not see ice on the tube as it builds up inside the tube. You should try warming up a flexible wire and see how far you can push it into the water tube....I bet you will find it clogged with ice
