I suspect many of the tourists can't read the sign - they might know some English, but 'reins'? Or haven't seen the sign. But I don't think that makes it excusable. The reins are clearly the guard's, just as one doesn't touch the wheel of the taxi driver. Unfortunately, I think there are some who see the sign and deliberately try to find out what will happen if they DO touch the reins. Like a dare.

The guests should follow the written signs but otherwise yes this is indeed a theme park. The soldiers are dressed as such.

Because of the access given to the tourists. You won't find this access at a place of business like say, the Pentagon. How do I know this? Because that's where I now work.

They were not developed to entertain tourists. Tourists are privileged to be allowed into the Kings Guard world. So stupidity is acceptable as todays norm then.

Thank you for this. As a former dog owner, I was irritated, how strange people patted my dog on the head, something he was clearly uncomfortable with. Kids were more open to lecturing them, that dogs don’t like that much being patted on the head, but neck scratches are cool. They followed that pretty fast, and seemed to enjoy both.

There is a sign near one arch. The other arch just says the horse may kick or bite. There needs to be one at each arch.

Most tourists are foreign and have no respect for anything.

People today have a mindset where they think there not to be told what to do.

At this point, they unfortunately know what they are signing up for. They know they are going to deal with the entitled jackasses out there. They choose to serve their country in a very honorable way anyway. Says a lot about them as both soilders and humans that they can ignore stupidity and focus on their jobs.

Well, I would agree with you if they were not part of the show. As you know, one of the reasons for visiting London is to see them. I don’t believe the soldiers are happy being on duty there. Having said that, I agree with you about some stupid morons not respecting the soldiers, either of them, as the horse is a soldier too. My point is, as much as tourist are purposely allowed near the guards, there should be a stronger presence of foot police, specially with so many tourist gathering around at the same time.

This serves no other purpose than decoration for some hugely expensive monarchy. These are not real soldiers(even though they have been trained as such) and this is basically englisch mickey mouse. One thing i would agree on is this is indeed a horse.

He transferred his sword to his left (reins-holding) hand so he could reach down and take the letter. He read it and smiled and nodded at her before tucking it into his saddle and resumed his sword-on-guard position. Priceless.......

I was taught from a young age, if you ever put your hand near a horse, and other animals, it's always closed fingers and flat hand, and move slowly, the same when passing them food. Some just don't have a clue!

I dont know how, but her not being aware of doing it made it worse, than if it was intentional. At best, it was nervousness of the moment, at worst,nails go everywhere when someone take her picture Right, the reason was that nobody realized it happened, the lady didnt, the guard didnt see from his angle, only the poor horse knew. The crowd? Why would they care?

It's really unfair of people to go up and touch the horses like this in the first place, but that eye poke really annoyed me. Horses are incredibly intelligent creatures and usually don't do well around any number of people, let alone crowds of shouting/screaming people with traffic etc. all going on in the background. It's obvious that the horses have been very well trained to withstand that kind of environment and sensory overload, but that doesn't mean it's not incredibly uncomfortable for the horse. People have 0 consideration for the actual animal itself, and the body language of the horse is very clearly, at times, saying "get out of my personal space right now"

I've wondered the same. OTOH that comes at the cost of many visitors to the UK not getting their much-admired 'look at me' tourist pics they won't/can't get elsewhere. Being able to get up close/even 'mingle' is much prized. Seems there are two alternatives: use barriers (which obstruct the view/camera shot) or employ more security (camo-clad troops or uniformed cops) to enforce crowd control. On balance, I think Horse Guards have got it about right to achieve maximum impressive historical 'presence' combined with public access - with the occasional tourist 'trespass' being dealt with as and when called for. That said, I also think it wouldn't hurt to have a somewhat greater continuous presence of uniformed personnel hovering out of the way but ready to step in quickly to intervene when needed - i.e. to move crowds back or 'discourage' horse-botherers. As with the bearskin-wearing guards regiments. All these horse guardsmen/women are active serving military - part of the Household Cavalry and trained to fight as part of an armoured unit - when not on ceremonial duties. It's different at the Tower of London - where the much-admired 'Beefeaters' are largely *retired* military and purely ceremonial as well as being photo-op tourist guides.
