When you start analysing human society you will find that almost everything is stupid or irrational. In my case I have spent a lot of money on video games and game consoles throughout my life. This is arguably worse than jewellery because it wastes both time and money. I see a lot of people criticising women for enjoying jewellery without any self-awareness of their own irrational and arbitrary motivations.

Something that either you or the person you're buying it for will be happy to wear for years to come. Yes. What we value determines our subjective demand. When everyone's subjective demand is taken into account you get market demand. In an actual capitalist system, market demand is contrasted with market supply to determine the market value of a commodity. But the U.S. isn't capitalist. It's cronyist and protectionist. Our government passes laws to protect dishonest and exploitative business practices and uses our armed forces to intervene in the business policy choices of other countries like Iraq, Korea, and Vietnam. They are compensated for these crimes against the free market and against humanity with campaign funding, personal gifts, and, after they finish their political career, a high-paying, virtually no-work position at one or more of the companies they conspired with to undermine human rights and the free market.

Huma17 ... A diamond ring today has same practical use as it did 5000 years ago as it will 5000 years into the future. Computers and other electronics depreciate rapidly because of advancements in technology. If you took a Radio Shack sale paper from 1999, I'm certain you can find over 50,000$ worth of products which uses is standard in every iPhone. A diamond is worth what somebody would pay. If a guy wants to drop 30,000$ on engagement ring, no problem. If same guy drops 30,000$ on engagement ring simply because "well I don't want to pay that much, but 3 month salary is standard" then that person is an idiot

Even more irony: diamonds are made of carbon, which is one of the most common elements in the universe. Cubic zirconium is made of an atomic element known as, well, zirconium. Not particularly rare, but not as common as carbon, yet ironically cheaper. Maybe it's because carbon is easier to find in the form of graphite than diamond, due to the differences in molecular structures between carbon atoms and the difficulty levels in arranging those structures. Maybe. But then again, Roger already admitted that vendors have huge vaults full of diamonds, while only selling a few of them per year. They're expensive just because the venders say they are. Similarly, cubic zirconium is cheap just because someone says it is.

Cheap metal, too, because I don't want to show off, you can't tell the difference, and I'm probably gonna lose it." Yet for some reason, guys never ever listen. Magnificent! We actually purchase nice basic wedding rings over 30 years ago. And invested the rest of the money in CDs account it paid over 6 figures. We only paid 280.00 dollars for wedding rings and they still look new.

but maybe they are just very special shiny "pet rocks" ? I remember very well how much I cried as a child when my parents wouldnt buy me a pet rock, and insisted I just go out into the yard and use it as a pet rock. I told them sternly... "but its not the same !!!, I have to go and buy one from the store for it to be a real one !!!!"

Diamonds are actually just awesome to look at, they are the densest optical medium thus having a ridiculously low angle for total reflection when light exits the diamond an thus are the most shiny thing available.

The store I work at sells conflict free and genuine shiny rocks. We even sell not-pretty diamonds because somebody decided they're trendy!

@@AGemFromJax My country, Oman, uses Dollar as its umbrella, like many others. But all countries pack tons of gold in case shit hits the fan, so you'll be immune and can jump off the ship safely. And because oil is not allowed to be sold with gold or you'll be invaded and screwed like Iraq and Libya.

Lol! My wedding ring was chosen on spur of the moment. My husband and I went "just to look". The employee offered to show us his collection. I didn't need to! I selected the first one. I turned to him and said I love YOU. And that was that. We tied the knot 5-19-2019. It's not the ring it's the LOVE. Even though my ring has real diamonds and gold none of that matters. What matters is that we are together.
