Scotty Kilmer, I need help and can pay!! I have a 2016 cvt nissan sentra rs. I think my cvt is going out. Can you look at my car and see if it needs a new transmission? Nissan sent me a letter stating that the CV transmission and all of the components are covered up to 82,000 miles and I have 72000 miles on the car currently. Its currently shaking/sputtering when I accelerate. At 75 or 80 the speed drops down and rpms and then goes back to the original speed. Nissan said if it happens again on the highway to notify them because it'll send a code but it hasn't happened in about 2 months. But it's definitely getting worse when I go from a stopped position and try to accelerate it sputters a lot! Anyway I know you're busy but didn't know if you could help me! I'm a single dad with two boys LOL!

Scotty, most of the issues you mention are poor owner maintenance. My wife has a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe with 184,000 miles. We have had to do more service work on it than our other cars but nothing really major. Still runs great and is reliable but we keep up on the maintenance. Paint still looks great considering she parks it outside a lot and washes it once a year if it's lucky -- and we live on a dirt road. But when she does wash it she protects the finish with a good wax. Not the best car but if the owner maintains it properly it will hold up.

I have a 2019 Veloster with the Silver Coverage Plan which include electrical repairs. My car would not start after just parking it less than 5 minutes earlier. I had it towed to Happy Hyundai in Oak Lawn, IL and two days later I was informed by Hyundai that my car needed a lock cylinder and ignition switch but it wasn't covered by the warranty because it appeared to the mechanic that force was administered but in the same breath the mechanic told me to use a screw driver to start my vehicle. This Hyundai Dealership and manufacturer's warranty are unethical. I'm sure a recall will surface about this same issue but until then, customers will be held responsible.

This poor Sonata has *CLEARLY* been driven hard and I'm sure has had lots of "deferred" maintenance. There's random loose electrical wires running through the driver's door from the engine compartment, an antenna(?) haphazardly taped/glued to the instrument cluster; a *VERY* dirty interior. A former employee at Kia’s corporate headquarters says he warned the automaker as far back as 2017 that faulty engine recall work was to blame for car fires. “I’m coming forward because people’s lives are at risk,” Jason Vaughn told I-Team Investigator Jackie Callaway in an exclusive sit-down interview. Vaughn worked for the warranty department at the headquarters for Kia Motors America in Irvine, California before he left the company last month - claiming he was pushed out of his job for raising concerns about the car fires. Vaughn told the I-Team he was performing Kia dealer audits in 2017 when he discovered dealerships performing engine recalls improperly - leading to highly flammable fuel pump leaks. Vaughn said he alerted his boss during a warranty operations meeting circa November 2017 but didn’t get the reaction he expected. “The warranty operations manager was not receptive at all,” said Vaughn. “She didn’t think that it was something that we should look at.”

My daughter had a '03 Sonata V6, and it was in a lot better shape when we sold it. I hated the fact that to change the spark plugs, I had to remove the Plenum to get to the back 3 plugs. It had many more miles than this car, but the seats were in good condition, and the paint was better. The only reason I sold it was that it was from this strange place named Buffalo, New York, and the frame had a rust hole in it. I could have installed a clean California frame in it from a junkyard, but I'm getting too old for crap like that. I paid $2200 for it, and we drove it for at least 5 years. I had a metal plate welded on the frame, and sold it to a teenager who needed a car to get to work for $1500, even though I could have gotten a little more for it. The A/C, power steering, and all worked. No check engine light either. The car Scotty checked either had a hard life, or was built on a Monday or Friday.

I knew it was a 12 year old car when I bought. I drove it for 4 years, that car never left me stranded. I thought it was a good car. Your Hyundai lasted 100,000 miles, and you learned how to repair it, because of it. While it might not be the best made car, it still teaches you how to fix cars, that itself is helpful, especially when you drive older economy cars. If you think that your car is well looked after, just because you drive a toyota or honda, and go to dealership garages, or any other garages, your in for nasty surprise, even dealership garages will sabotage things, so you have to go get servicing sooner, same applies to non dealership garages. The best is to fix it yourself. I worked in the auto industry, and I have seen many not so good things happen to peoples cars, from the inside. The only person I trust to service my cars, is myself only. The only time I go to the garage is when I need to do steering alignment done. Tire replacement and balance, but I just make temporary use of my other set of tires, example : if the winter set is due for replacement, I use the summer set, if the summer set is due for replacement, I use the winter set.

Driven by a Female Nurse (2nd owner) from 2010-2021 with All the Service Records. 4 Brand New Michelen Tires, 18"Rims, Sapphire Metalic Dark Blue with Tan Leather interior. 213,000 Highway miles (starting in 2015, she averaged only 13,000 miles/year) She had it Re-painted 1 year ago. Paint looks Excellent. No Accidents. I paid $200 to have a Mobile Mechanic verify everything. So Far, it has been a Dream Car. I only needed to replace the 5 year old Battery and now my TPMS is working perfectly. Very happy. ------------ I donated the above 2002 Sonata Hunk of Junk (but it has 4 NEW Tires & Brand New Battery-3yr-full-replacement) to a friend who has a 2004 Sonata with similar problems. --------- I LOVE my Lexus IS250 !!! Thank you for telling me to buy this Lexus !!!

I've always wondered when I see cars like this and a statement like 'this brand is completely unreliable' is given. Like, would things be different if the owner(s) just took care of them? Service them at the proper intervals, drove them like a regular person, washed it and just generally took care of it? I understand design flaws like with the engine, but I almost feel like most of the time it's owners not doing their part in maintaining their vehicle. IDK, I can't imagine a company staying in business if they truly do produce crappy vehicles. EDIT: I know he mentioned that the oil looked clean and it was serviced, I'm talking more generally, not necessarily this exact car.

I agree with Scotty. I am the owner of this Sonata and it has been a total nightmare. Bought it in 2016 and immediately the Starter Motor broke and the Power Steering System completely Exploded in several locations, then the idle control valve sensor & the Radiator broke. My 1996 Toyota 4Runner (250k miles) I had before this Sonata, Never had any of these problems (I went sideways into a Tree at high speed - my seatbelt saved my life - right side completely Caved in, & it still drove straight, but looked really scarry) ----------------- I just got a LEXUS is250 !!! 2008, v6. Automatic, Private Seller got it in 2010. Has All the Service Records. OMG - I Love this Lexus !!! Feels so good to have a reliable car again 🙂

Yeah you could do worst than a hyundai, sure it's not as reliable as a Toyota, but I would say still a new hyundai is more reliable than a lot of american and italian stuff.

My 81-year old aunt has a Chrysler Town and Country and it has over 200k miles on it. She does the scheduled maintenance and only had a couple major problems, nothing that would break the bank though. It has been a good car for her and it still runs like a champ. Guess she was lucky?

Korean-owned carmakers can be a toss-up depending on the year, and more importantly, where they were made. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, in what I'm guessing was an effort to keep costs low, they had production in places like India, Russia and China, often only final assembly work being done in South Korea itself. The result was a very cheap car with a lot of features but... as time shows, they didn't hold up well. This was a Forth-gen Sonata. By the Fifth Gen, Hyundai was staring to realize production quality had to be better, and they began making them in North America and Thailand too. That tendency to criticize and improve their construction and where they're made has continued up to the current Eighth generation. Only thing is... there is little cost difference now between them and a Toyota Camey - less than $1000 USD currently - so in Scotty's own words "Just get the Camry." I don't say that to knock Korean vehicles - _both_ of my current vehicles are Korean, it's just good to understand the nature of the situation. In my case, I bought mine for very unique reasons, and with one it was used for a super-cheap price with no issues, so I wasn't losing out, nor am I under the unrealistic expectations that I will get Toyota-like mileage out of them. I've found the highest quality builds are from 2010 up, particularly if they were made in South Korea itself. But it always, *always* pays to do as Scotty suggests over and over: do your research and have a mechanic check it out _before_ you buy.

@@bugayev Yes - there were some good ones prior, and it has to do with here things were made again. My father had a 2003 Hyundai Elantra - he put 101,000 miles on it and sold it to a co-worker, who still drives it today. It now has 283,000 miles on it. The Beta II engine paired with a manual transmission was pretty solid in that case.

@@Dakiraun the automatics arent bad either for that year the sensors on them may wear out time to time making a non competent mechanic think it's the transmission when it isn't. And yes the beta 2 is a work of art any "knowledgeable" mechanic will tell you of it's high mileage capability. I have a 2005 hyundai elantra myself currently looks brand new inside still after a year the first owner took really good care of it for being dam near 100,000 miles now

But you can get Toyota like mileage out of them. It's possible and has been done. You can see RU-vid videos and Kia/Hyundai forums to see for yourself.
