How secure is the locking mechanism? In other words is there a safety to keep the head from releasing if one of the arms gets snagged?

I can say two things about this from our expirience: 1. Unlocking this by accident is very very difficult - you need to apply force in a very precise way to unlock this. 2. With that said - one of our other readers on Facebook commneted that he would have liked to see a secondery safety lock in case say another person plays with this when he is not looking and in this case the whole head with the gear can release and fall. I am not sure how much of an actual risk that is (at least for us) but I agree that having a simple second lock would give some extra piece of mind - and so I suggested it to ifootage.

@@IddoGenuth Now that mine have arrived I see what you mean: the spring tensioned breech-lock is very secure. I am not sure I would use it to support a small boom /jib like the Kessler Pocket Jib but for sliders and tripod heads it works great.

@@ellisvener5337 Hi Ellis, First - I am glad we could help. We also have a small jib (the Edelkrone JibOne - it is smaller but it does work with the Seastars we tried it), Jibs in general apply a lot of force so there is a limit to what you can put on this thing. Question - did your plate/s have the locking alan screw things? Our pre-production units didn't and that is a problem (with twisting).

@@LensVid thank you! Mine had pressure screws in the receiver but not on the plate, just the compressible rubber gasket.

@@ellisvener5337 Not good. I have been trying to get an answer from ifootage about this thing - I'll update when I do.

How are you securing the top plate to the the underside of the the fluid head? There is no screws to secure it like in the base portion.

There should be and will be. This is one of the things that we mentioned in the review. Our units were pre-production samples and had no locking parts for the plates and this was indeed an issue. We talked to iFootage about that and they are working on adding these things to the plates (interestingly one reviewer that we have seen had these on his plates - not sure how). Anyway, if you are looking to buy the Q1 Seastars - wait until you know that this has been added (I would suggest talking to ifootage and making sure that it did and that what you are buying has this). We are waiting for this as well to buy more as we need them for our work.

@@IddoGenuth Thank you so much for your excellent response. I have sent numerous emails to I footage about the lack of a mechanism for securing the base plate to the underside of the fluid head and I am getting nothing but doubletalk about their customer service will have to reach out to me. It is either there, or not. I can't imagine they would have created such a nice product and forgotten to invent a way to secure it to the fluid head. But that is what apparently has happened is I've had other people commenting that it's coming off easily. It's a shame because it is such a terrific product and I would easily buy 4 or 5 of them but I cannot until I know how they are handling this design flaw.

@@scottabergermd As I said - the current products do not have this (I don't know the reason). If you buy one of Amazon now it won't have it. However, I was promised that they are working on fixing this and this is why I suggested that you wait and triple check with the company before you do buy these to know that the ones that you order do come with these locks. As for when this will happen - I can't say - we didn't get any dates sadly... (there is another ifootage product that was supposed to be released back in 2020 and is still postponed - our review of it will be published as soon as it becomes available - it is fantastic), maybe CUVID is causing some issues with manufacturing - I really don't know.

@@IddoGenuth Again, thank you for your excellent response. This is more than I have gotten from the company thus far. Have they told me this was a known issue, I would have waited. But thankfully I have heard it through you and will wait, because in my vague recollection, I remember seeing a different kind of plate that did have screws to secure it. But this is not currently what they are selling as you pointed out. There are other RU-vidrs I have corresponded with who are also having these issues of securing the fluid head to the upper plate. I really appreciate your candor and honesty. I bought their top-of-the-line monopod and TC 6 carbon fiber tripod and absolutely love the quality of them. I'm sure they will get this remedied. Thank you again.

@@scottabergermd Mind you, I don't speak for iFootage and can't promise anything on their behalf, I am just repeating what they said to me (so if they never come up with a fix - please don't blame us - although I really hope that they will as we want this fix just like you and many other users). From what I have seen iFootage has some of the best design engineers in the industry and they are extremely capable and innovative. It is possible that for whatever reason (especially since CUVID) they are having problems actually producing their own designs to specs - again I don't know - this is just speculation). At this point, we can just wait. I'll update the video description section and our review when we hear anything from them on this.
