Imperator: Rome has finally arrived. Is this grand strategy from Paradox a chiseled Hellenic masterpiece, or does it fall flat on its face? I give you an unbiased, fair, and concise review.

Full disclaimer, I don't own the game, but I'm glad you mentioned the mixed gender option. Not trying to stir up a controversy, but I do fear Paradox is slowly giving away to politics by devoting more and more time to adding "gender equality" options in time periods where it doesn't belong. Anyway, nice review!

This is probably the most fair and unbiased review of the game so far.

I enjoy the game so far but I can see the other side. It does have mechanics and features not present and some parts of it do feel rather bland. But I tend to play this kind of games for the narrative and storytelling opportunities I get from the way my campaigns unfold which makes it a good deal more enjoyable for me.

I enjoy the narrative aspects as well. To me, that is a big part of Imeprator's current problem. I found the events, branching stories etc to be almost non-existent. Managing relationships with leaders in tribal nations is cool though.

Good review thanks! I’m disappointed in Paradox as they should be delivering far more in the base game with their experience and knowledge rather than persistent threadbare titles primed for paid DLC and updates. Looks like people have had enough with this tiresome format.

Thanks for this review, it is exactly what I was looking for. Sometimes you can just tell by looking that a game lacks the soul that makes it a memorable one. I'm disappointed to find that my instincts were correct on this one. Hopefully PI recognizes that (their gamers especially) people are much more savvy to crappy game design these days and implement some hotfix patches. I really amped myself up for this one, and am disappointed but not willing to support a bad game (companies notice one thing: numbers). Do you have a recommendation for your favorite historical PI strategy game? (not super interested in Stellaris)

Glad it helped. While I do think Imperator will end up being one of the weaker PDX titles, if you give it some time there will be a lot of dlc that improves it if you're willing to wait for sales down the road. Tbh, I would get a title that covers the time period you are interested in. HOI4 is now a more enjoyable game than 3, imo. But again, you need those dlcs. Crusader Kings 2 is great because of the intricacies of family relations, but just like all Paradox titles, you're still going to want the extras. The UI is a little dated too- you might want to check if you can scale it for high resolution. In the end, all of PDX's historical titles are pretty solid, so I would just wait for a sale, get the period you are interested in, and nab some of the additional content.

@@TheWarSimmer HOI3 is still by far the best game available, I dont agree on HOI4. I admit some people have difficulty understanding the game but its very deep if you are willing to dive in. It has a lot of automation, a real supply system and actual ships and planes. Also the tech tree is endless and the practical and theoretical support for techs is just genius. Most people couldnt get the real depth of HOI3 and I understand that. EU4 could compare regarding replay-ability but its nerved to the ground so is no option. Of course just my opinion 😎 Edit: btw, I agree on CK2, a solid game. But I didnt play that for 4 years now so dunno about current state.

@@tip0019 I may have to give HOI3 another try. Any suggestions on mods?

@@TheWarSimmer I only tried two as most have problems and vanilla is good enough. The WW1 mod was solid but after 2 games it doesnt have enough replay-ability. BlackICE is sophisticated and with great support but too many bugs. Also take a check at the custom game setup (from start screen option, some people dont even know about it) and you can design your own army and tech setup. It can be really funny for some games as you can mess around (have night-vision in 1936). If you try that dont forget deleting forts and airfields, etc as that gives loads of extra points for the custom setup :-) Edit, dont delete all the airfields of course 😎

Thanks for this! I have become disillusioned with Paradox games over years, which is a shame. Personally, I am waiting for Field of Glory: Empires

Its a good game. Its deeper than Imperator: Rome but doesn't look pretty. If the looks are not as important to you as the mechanics i recommend it to you.

No problem. I hate to say it, but you may have the right idea. Wait a year until there is DLC, and get it all on sale.

Just as usual with paradox games, it’s a good base as it is but I agree with you both. Gonna get it all on sale aswell and just wait for dlcs to finish the game. Sticking to EU4 till then. Not complaining about their dlc policy though, that’s just how they do it

Don't worry, this game will feel more alive after $300 worth of DLC.

Nice review. I have 1300 hours in CK2 and 2200 hours in EU4 and I absolutely love those games. I played EU Rome for probably another 500 hours back in the day and I was really looking forward to this game. Unfortunately as you mention it not only feels soulless but it also lacks basic features such as informative tool tips, a ledger and an UI that works and doesn't make everything feel like a chore. That could have been excused if they had made the game fun and surprising with historical events and and various things happening as time passes but nothing. Playing as Rome is a bland experience. You have no missions, no road map... Nothing. You get a few claims after the start. Then some more claims. And more claims. That is basically it for the historical Rome. If you play as the Greeks you get the Olympics and a bit of history about Alexander and that's it. A few pop ups explaining what happened leading up to the games start date and from there it is done. It feels like a MP game to me and I am so disappointed in this lackluster game that as you say my love for Paradox basically died overnight. I started thinking about the money I spent on DLC's for the various games and the lack of respect for the community this game shows. We will get immersion packs and history packs to give the game more flavor and immersion. That though is no excuse for this glorified clicking game. They should have spent more time making at least Rome a full experience with history, mechanics, reforms and some regard to actual history. One consul? No age limits on offices so a 17 year old can become consul? No cursus honorum? Just meh. Thanks for the review.

Thoughtful write-up, and I especially agree on the blandness. There's just so little historical info and branching events to spicy to it up
@throwaway5744
@throwaway5744 5 лет назад
It would be cool for a game like this to present those choices to you, but then face consequences for it as well. ie let's say you want to name someone very young of a specific family consul but doing so would massively upset relations within your nation and outside it. It's a simple adjustment in numbers to implement with a shiny painting to cover it up.

You are just one of the people who think pdx games launched in a fleshed out state. All of those games start out as a Skeleton, why don't you ask why. They don't bring out a finished game because they work with it for years after release. Ck2 is definitely their masterpiece but also the oldest in their current generation of games. When it launched it was really bare bones and unoptimized. Now after years of work it's probably the best game ever made. They work with the game and the community to make this happen. Don't be so gloomy like you are at the end. They are getting better and better.

I have to disagree with you. I'm 33 and have been gaming since before duckhunt. I know how the industry works, and you're right about that being PDX model. However, this one is different. Inevitably, yes, they'll invest in this one long term, just like the others, and there will be fans. But it looks like this may be one of their weakest titles. Core mechanics of the game itself are wrong, and that's the problem. Take the mana, for example.

@@TheWarSimmer It's not different in any substansive way from their other similar releases... I'm 42 and have been gaming for over 30 years. The whole outrage victim mentality that is prevelant these days is what is different. Everyone is an expert on the internet though and can lay out everything that is wrong with the game and everything pdx should do to to fix it, and what a perfect game would look like. I do wonder however what these self proclaimed experts have created in their time... By the way no one is unbiased.
@TheWarSimmer

Outrage culture is for sure out of control, but what does that have to do with the belief that IR is PDXs weakest game? You're free to have your own opinion about it and should probably put your own review up about how it is your favorite since you're this outraged about it.
@dardo1201

Telling people that they're overreacting, in an age where most game companies push out titles just to fix them months after release, or milk their customers with dlc, is pretty naive. I also don't really understand why you're trying to diminish his opinion by trying to depict him "You are just one of the people", you don't know that, it's an ad-hominem comment with zero value. The man honestly laid out his opinion and all you got is some sob story about how waiting years for a game to be fixed is a normal proces. "They work with the game and the community to make this happen", this is not a mod, it's a fully released retail game, it shouldn't need a few more years for it to be better than previous games launched by the company.
