This is so on point. I've fallen into the trap of thinking that way - "hmm this guy is playing some complicated stuff, that means he's probably using a crazy complicated scale!". Nope. Whenever I've transcribed a line turns out it's mostly been a major scale with some chromatic approaches (maybe an altered scale once in a while when things get spicy). Having a solid vocabulary and a good sense of phrasing >>>> crazy unusual scales

The mother scales are few (5): major Bachiana (melodic minor) Harmonic Minor (only the V mode is widely used) diminished tones. it's over. You won't hear any jazz master play anything else. The ones I most recommend studying are two: Major scale, melodic minor (bachiana) study: playing in 12 keys: thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths and sevenths

Agreed - But going further, I like to use the Major and Minor Diminished 6th scales, which are modifications that cover the first 3 scales you mentioned.

@@Crazy-Society The pentatonic is a widely used scale. but I wouldn't consider it as a mother scale. A pentatonic scale can be any combination of 5 notes.
