"Purgatory's kinda like the inbetweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham." The dialogue in this film might be my favorite of any movie from the 2000s.
"You're a f**king inanimate object!" One of my favourite movie lines of all time, and somehow, every time I see it it's even funnier than I remembered it.
Wow, you really called that ending with the racist dwarf. I don't think I did first time I saw it. Harry being a man of his word makes the character and I love that despite shooting him several times Ray still tries to warn him that he hasn't killed a child.
McDonagh is also a playwright, if you ever get the chance to see "The Lt of Inishmore" or "The Pillowman" done professionally, don't miss that opportunity!
Be sure to check out “the Guard”, stars Brendan Gleason and Don Cheadle, and was written/directed by Martin McDonough’s brother, John Michael McDonough.
I'll just "drop" a scene... and all i'll say is that the opening scene alone is one of my favorite openings: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pp37jdduMbI.html
I love the shit out of this movie! The dark humor, the alcoves, the plot is sneaky great, the ending. So underrated, I hardly ever hear anyone talk about it. Cool to see any RU-vidr react to it and it's this channel? Dope. I instantly knew you would love it too.
This is definitely Colin Farrell's best performance. He balances comedy and drama incredibly well. But..he did some amazing work these last couple years as well. He did make movies like "The Lobster" and "Killing of a sacred dear" which were both great and special in my opinion. Also he was pretty amazing in season 2 of True Detective - even though the season was kind of a letdown, he was still great. I like his earlier work too, like Phone Booth or Minority Report. But over time he developed into this really multi-layered and kind of underrated actor ❤
I forget about this movie but then I watch it and am reminded that it is literally one of my all-time favorites. Colin Farrell's performance in my opinion is the best of any of his movies. And Brendan Gleeson too! Everyone is phenomenal, even Ralph Fiennes who's only in it for like 10 minutes.
There was a group of action-type comedies that I particularly enjoyed around that time. Though different, I do remember In Bruges, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Ice Harvest, The Matador, and Lucky Number Slevin among the bunch.
Brendan Gleeson is the father of Domhnall Gleeson, who played Hux in the new Star Wars Trilogy. And if you want to see Fiennes as a bad guy...well, there is Schindler's List.
You'll enjoy McDonagh's other film "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri". His brother also makes WONDERFUL movies. That guy has a movie with Brendan Gleeson called "Calvary" that is similar in tone to In Bruges.
Definitely. Both of them do amazing stuff. The only film I'd recommend skipping is John Michael's War on Everyone, it wasn't quite on par. Calvary however is one of my favorite films of 2010s. As is Three Billboards, and Seven Psychopaths, and also The Guard. :D
@@waltermontiel4405 Well yeah, if I'm allowed to rephrase, it's still a lot better than most stuff out there, just not quite as good as the rest of their filmography.
Eh, I didn't like Seven Psychopaths as much as In Bruges. I don't know what it was, I think maybe it was that it seemed more Pretentious and also the comedy felt different. I enjoyed it but it isn't something I would really watch again.
" In Bruges" does walk the tightrope between comedy and drama like nothing I've ever seen since. As for Ralph Fiennes, he has such extremes to his catalogue of characters. Nazi prison camp commander in "Schindlers list", romantic lead in " The english patient", a camp and highly entertaining concierge in " The Grand Budapest Hotel." There's really nothing he can't do.
Loved the movie reaction! Such a great movie with a mix of British, Irish and American humour. Harry says at one point that “I’m suicidal, you’re suicidal, we’re all fucking suicidal” when he meets with Ken, those are the only main characters that died.
I was working in my local Blockbuster when this movie came out on DVD (RIP Blockbuster) The DVDs came in a few days before release and I took this home to watch it. When it was done I watched it again immediately. I don't think I've ever done that with another movie. I spent the next few weeks brow-beating every customer to take that instead of whatever shit blockbuster they'd chosen. No regrets.
The Director is just insane, his writing so good, not only he made bunch of amazing movies, with 3 billbords even get him oscar, but before movies, he actually was making plays. I am so blessed that in our local theather in Russia (could you even imagine?) they makig few plays every month for like 15 years, cause people still coming to them nonstop. And his brother film director too, his stuff great too.
Martin McDonagh is an Irish playwright famous for plays like: "the Pillowman" "Cripple of Inishman," "Beauty Queen of Leenane.", etc. As an actor who grew up in the 90's, there is no way NOT to know about Martin McDonagh. He's incredibly talented. If you enjoy reading plays, you should check out some of his other work.
Now you have to watch "The Guard" Brendan Gleeson at his finest also Don Cheadle is A+ in it too. Both their characters in the guard are written at a genius level. Totally different story to "In Bruges" but a similar style of character development humour and gritty reality combined
If you want more like this ,watch The Guard. Edit, I've only just realized it's the same writer and director, it just felt similar and also stars Brendan Gleason.
I've recommended this movie to many people including my young adult kids. I'm so happy to see 2 guys who enjoyed it as much as I did. It's subtle yet over the top. Colin Farrell"s best by far. Thanks Jimmy.
As someone who actually lives "in Bruges" I both love and hate the movie. Hate because the suckers used my adress (not the house, just the adress) for the gun/drug dealer. Love because we hung out with Colin nearly every night in my usual bar. All I can say is all the stories about the Irish are true... dude drank like mad. I kept wondering "how the hell is he going to get to set tomorrow" :)
This is such a great film, one of the best of the last 20 years. Crazy that this was Martin McDonagh's first film, but he was an established playwright before moving into directing movies. I love his sense of humor. His other two movies are also good, SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS and THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI but I think IN BRUGES is still his best. The balance of humor with the gritty and tragic subject matter is so well done here, and in his other films it's not quite as well-executed. Definitely check out his other films though, and if you like Brendan Gleeson (the actor who plays Ken) he has starred in 2 solid Irish films directed by Martin McDonagh's brother- THE GUARD and CALVARY. Also Ralph Fiennes plays a good amount of villains, most famously as Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies. But also as the Nazi officer in Schindler's List, an amazing performance playing such a vile and despicable person.
This is an absolutely brilliant movie, definitely in my top 3 of all time. Also I have been waiting for months for someone to react to this movie and I think you're the first ones to do so, and you loved it to boot, so you've got my sub.
Watched it yesterday, enjoyed it. Watched it a 2nd time yesterday with your full reaction and I really liked it. Seems to get better the more times you watch it
Martin McDonagh's Masterpiece ! One of the Best of the 21st Century. >> Would like to see you react to: The Long Kiss Goodnight, Let It Ride, Kick-Ass and/or The Outlaw Josey Wales.
If you like this you should watch The Guard. Brendan Gleeson plays an Irish cop who has to work with an FBI agent (Don Cheadle) in Ireland to catch drug smugglers.
It's just a fact of life. When you have Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Colin Farrell as your cast you are going to have a great movie. This movie came out of nowhere for me as well, and it's easily in my top five (maybe top three) movies of the 21st century.
Really really glad to see someone else watches this movie like me many years ago and declares it the favorite movie. It still is mine, to this day, what an incredible piece of art :)
In Bruges is hands down my favorite movie of all time. It has incredible rewatchability as the second time around you notice all of the set up and foreshadowing that went into the crafting of the movie. And the soundtrack is so damn good.
This is one of my favorite movies. The scene with Harry, Ray and the woman in the hallway was so well writtwn. It had my laughing my ass of how they were discussing how and where to have their duel
Martin McDonagh's next film after this which he wrote and directed was Seven Psychopaths. Another Colin Farrell movie, and really darn good and funny as hell. In Bruges was his first film. He was known before as a playwright for his incredibly dark and creative plays, before now also having a small but revered film career. He's set to be working on his fourth film, but each of his movies have come out some time apart, so we'll wait and see.
If you loved this movie you'll probably also love 'The Guard', it also stars Brendan Gleeson and is also written and directed by the same guy who wrote and directed this movie!
This movie is incredibly underrated, it’s so fuckin weird and brilliant. Fun fact the actor who plays Ken is the father of the actor who plays Caleb in Ex Machina
If you loved this one please react to The Guard. Directed by Mc Donnoughs brother. Staring Brendan Gleeson (Ken) and Don Cheadle. Gleeson is an amazing actor. Very very similar. I think it is actually even better similar tones. You won't be disappointed.
It is close, but I prefer The Guard. There was also a very short film with Brenden Gleeson set on a train that I forget the name of. Both full of drama with shock-laughter.
In Bruges is definitely up there with Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Layer Cake. Awesome movies. Another super underrated movie which you should watch is Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Super entertaining
I know this was like 4 whole months ago but Martin McDonough is a cinematic genius, his film "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" was nominated for an Oscar (I believe Woody Harrelson actually won an Oscar for his supporting role in that film). I believe he's only got about 5 films out (2 being short films) and I've seen all but one. The casts are all good, and there's black comedy pouring out of every hole. In Bruges is definitely my favourite tho.
There's a short film by the same director, also starring Brendan Gleeson, that I highly recommend watching! It's called Six Shooter. Same kind of dark humor that still manages to pull on your heartstrings.
Never occurred to me that someone might have reacted to In Bruges. Thanks. I stumbled across this movie by sheer fluke. My friend & I went to the theatre 1 night, with no plans to see something, and it was either this or some Ryan Reynolds Rom-com, so I said "Colin Farrell is in it, its probably not bad"..... so we went there with nothing more than the little write up at the theatre on the board which said "2 hitmen hide out in a small town in Belgium". I've watched this film at least 20 times.
watch "The Guard" similar humour, Brendan Gleeson is main character...amazing film Ken's my top character, Kan was a G of the highest order, the scene when he is about to shoot Ray, genius
I have been waiting for a long time for people to react to this movie, it's a gem. You should react to "The Guard" now! It's another gem, a great dark comedy, it has very similar type of humor and it is just as weird. In fact the writer and director of The Guard is the brother of the writer and director of In Bruges. And Brendan Gleeson is the protagonist!
I think if you like this you will also like The Guard. Its made by this directors brother. Very similar dark humor tone. It stars Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle.
