I can't enjoy one single minute of the prequels. Trust me, I can't. But I feel sad for George, he made his movies. He gave his best, we all know he gave his best. It's sad because he is a person, and people didn't like his movies, and now they want to say that his person sucks? Ironic

This whole 'show me who my parents are/were' thing is odd. She must have known them, to a point. It was pretty clear from TFA that she was raised by parents who she remembers (else why whine for them). She then probably had some kind of adult supervision (unkar plutt) til she was old enough to look after herself. Not a huge reveal, really.

+Don Substance that scene in my opinion was the worst form of fan service ever, at no point in TFA did I ever get the impression Rey did not know who her parents were! so why would she do that? and then you have that scene with Kylo seriously if her parents were not going to be a major detail there is no reason to bring it up at all in the movie.

well the value of ships is never defined in star wars so they could still be lowlifes, hell they could of even of stolen it, but either way it does imply that she does know who they were if she remembers them leaving her on jakku flying off in said ship.

I keep rewatching this video and my biggest fear is honestly that they backtrack every meaningful decision in order to make Rey belong to some legacy or bloodline and make it all cookie cutter with some special twist. This is my second-favorite Star Wars film because of how Rian goddamn well he handled the greater themes of Star Wars and told a genuinely heartfelt and entertaining story . I don't want them to try and negate that, though honestly even if they do, nothing could take away from the story told here.

The only problem is that both actually have protagonist backstories, and that Kylo's turn happens entirely offscreen because "a wizard did it"

@CommandoDude Anakin was the first nobody. They don't have to make her special by contriving some bloodline, she can also be a nobody with a humble background, but at least some explanation of her abilities would be nice. The point isn't that anyone can be special, it's that a special person can come from anywhere. What makes them special is they all have an incredible story to tell. Rey so far has no story, and we're two movies in.

@CommandoDude The Jedi chose him, randomly bumped into him, mention throughout the prequels they might have misinterpreted the prophecy. None of that even matters because Anakin was a nobody before the Jedi found him. At least Luke can't say he was a nobody after that. edit: the many abilities need an explanation because: 1) using the Force without any training or any knowledge of what the Force even is, let alone what it's capable of, to the degree Rey does in TFA and TLJ is faster and better than Masters practicing for decades, centuries in Yodas case. How? 2) She flies the Falcon better than we've ever seen, and she's never seen it off the ground. 3) She's practically lived as a hermit dealing with the possibility she was abandoned by her parents, but has no problem relating to people, is more altruistic, more optimistic, practically no flaws, and that's boring. She's already a paragon, she's got nowhere to go but down. I thought she was the main character, but maybe it turns out the dude who murdered Han is the good guy?

I agree. And have to say it is DISGUSTING how many so-called "fans" actually want this reality to be true. I just want to shake them roughly in my hands, and scream at them: "NOT EVERYONE IN THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE HAS TO BE RELATED TO SOMEONE ELSE FOR A GOOD STORY TO BE TOLD!!" It's honestly like the original generation of Star Wars fans has been hypnotized by Episodes IV, V, and VI, and they literally cannot accept anything remotely different. The ending seems defies the theme of the movie, if u should forget the past and embrace urself, why Rey still taking taking the mantle of Jedi and preserve it. @@Flash244MCGaming Think I'm just going to have to disagree with you on this one, bud. First of all, let's go straight at it and say that Snoke sucks. Snoke was an exceptionally silly creation (he's the Emperor, just even more grotesque!), and he is onscreen for all of two scenes that don't even add up to three minutes *as a hologram* in TFA. I think it's pretty hard to argue, just based on the movies, that he was "supposed to be" anything. The only place he was "supposed to be" an incredibly powerful enemy and force user was reddit or in the heads of some fans. Taking an axe to the things like Snoke about TFA that didn't work to carve out more time for the things that did was absolutely the right decision, especially in the context of this already somewhat bloated movie (which I love). And besides, we really didn't need a complete regurgitation of the Emperor/Vader Master/Apprentice dynamic. It's great that people love this universe so much, but not every Star Wars movie or television show can be an artistically bankrupt exercise in circling back to all of the things we like about the movies that came before. Why even make new movies at that point? And I just completely disagree that his death served no purpose, or that it was disappointing. For me, Snoke's death was probably the biggest Oh Shit! moment I've had watching movies or TV since Ned Stark's head got lopped off on GoT. It opened up so many more storytelling possibilities and was the first time watching anything of the sequel trilogy that didn't make me think "Oh, they're just doing the original trilogy with new actors." It was very, very cool and definitely not a disappointment. I got chills and my jaw hit the floor when that happened. Those are the kinds of moments I want to experience when I go to a movie.

I loved it but for much different reasons. I went high as fuck and just thought it was good fun (which is the same opinion I have for every star wars pretty much) though watching this made me realize there was a lot more to it.

Or all of a sudden now complaining about "plotholes" or "inconsistencies" "ruining" the film when the original had Leia knowingly bring the entire Empire to the doorstep of the rebel base when she decided it was a good idea to bring the Falcon carrying the plans to Yavin IV knowing damn well it was being tracked the whole time.

@@pacman5698 You need to rewatch that scene. Leia isn't flying the ship/in command, she tells Han they're tracking them and he straight up says "Not this ship, sister." Regardless, attacking the OT doesn't defend the ST, it just attacks the OT. You're basically saying "well star wars was always terrible!", its not much of a defense.

@Pez Dispencer I think what he/she was trying to say that, if you’re judging films to this kind of level, you need to be able to acknowledge those same kind of flaws in the movies you do like. It’s not really a defense of the ST but more of a, “when you criticize this for doing that weird thing, why aren’t you being critical of those ones as well?” When you to give some movies a pass for doing one odd thing, but bash another for doing something on par as odd, it basically shows bias.

TLJ is not being held to a special standard which is exactly my point, and again it still doesn't make TLJ any better at all.

Also, I have seen the scene multiple times, and if we're gonna chastise Star Wars, or any film for "plotholes" again, Episode IV can't escape it. To say all the logical inconsistencies of the original trilogy can be brushed aside by making up some fan theories or speculation but the inconsistencies seen in the sequels should be taken and used against the films on face value proves that the foundation of criticizing a film for it's gaps in "logic" tends to be completely arbitrary. If you were to approach somebody on a film they loved but pointed out some random inconsistency that doesn't really detract from the viewing, many are quick to pull some random explanation and speak on behalf of the movie's own logic themselves, but if it's a movie somebody hates they'll usually agree it's a plothole on face value. And I've seen the original film multiple times. For a rebel leader who has been adamant and centered nearly every move on making sure the plans don't fall into the Empire's hands and that the rebellion can take the battle to the Death Star, she seems to suddenly give no crap about bringing the entire fascist force right to the base of the alliance which would certainly spell destruction for the whole resistance. Saying "Well, Han Solo was in charge of the ship." is kind of a lazy explanation to brush it aside. A simple line or scene or her objecting or arguing with him would seal up perhaps a bit better, but we don't get that. And keep in mind, I'm not the only one who has noticed arguably one of the biggest plotholes in the entire franchise on film,. HISHE was doing parodies of Leia bringing the whole Empire to their doorstep back in 2007. And keep in mind, the reason it's a plothole in the first place because Maria Lucas, (who saved the entire film in the editing bay and is an unsung hero of the whole franchise) rewrote the whole scenario of the Battle of Yavin. Making it so that instead of the Death Star hanging around in space for the rebels to blow it up, she would use different takes, off-screen dialogue, re-use shots, etc. to make it so the whole rebel base was about to be blown up if the Empire's weapon wasn't destroyed in time. So hey, a logical inconsistency which made the whole finale, one of the greatest final action scenes of any movie ever made, a better product in the end. And of course I'm not arguing from the point of "These movies suck with their faults, so the originals sucked too!" I'm coming from the point that, despite what many may say, "plotholes" or "inconsistencies" can be a great thing for movies if they are used to a better end. Some of the most loved and praised movies have tons of moments where their own logic is contradicted or peddled back again. Just look at the rest of the Star Wars trilogy. The Empire clearly could have created a better blockade around Hoth to ensure the destruction of the rebellion's escape, the Empire never brings that AT-AT which brings Luke to Vader in RotJ to the Battle of Endor to crush the entire Ewok and rebellion uprising to destroy the shield generator, Vader could have easily force lifted Luke out of the Cloud City air shaft when he decided to jump in ESB, the list goes on. Yet do I care about any of this plotholes? No, not really. Because the characters, messages, themes, and stories surrounding these inconsistencies are so great that they basically go unnoticed. Same thing goes with the sequel trilogy in my eyes. And the same goes with tons of movies I love that aren't Star Wars related. If Doctor Strange were to just cut off Thanos's arm on Titan like he did to his goon back in NYC when Ebony Maw first came to Earth, Thanos would be quickly dealt with, and Infinity War would not have its astonishing ending. And no End Game to boot. Oh, and speaking of End Game, why didn't Strange get the time stone and bring Tony back to life as we was dying from his snap like he did to so many bad scenarios in his solo movie? In Jurassic Park, it makes no sense why the scientists John Hammond hires are so brilliant that they can understand DNA and the harvesting of proteins to the point they can bring back extinct forms of life, but at the same time have such a horrific misunderstanding of basic biology when they don't know certain types of frogs can change their sex. Yet, if they were to fill this plothole, the movie would lose its lovely metaphorical and literal message of "Life always finds a way.". Then there's the fact the town in Beauty and the Beast doesn't know anything about it's own apparent monarchy, how the police are so incapable of dealing with a single madman in post 9'/11 America with the Joker in The Dark Knight, etc. As HISHE should have pointed out, if we judged every movie based on its logical inconsistencies and "plotholes" like we do in so many film criticism videos trending on RU-vid, we would discover practically no movie is safe from a brutal beating. Now, this doesn't mean one has to like the sequel trilogy, or shut up about whenever they see a logical fallacy in a film, but the idea that we can decide whether or not to judge a movie as good or bad on plotholes alone is a very shallow and dangerous way to approach movie criticism. And this is what cheap channels such as CinemaSins, MauLer, and Channel Awesome love to do. Spending way more time trying to "outsmart" the director on his inability to make his film totally logically consistent instead of spending time focusing on what the movie means as a thematic piece of work, it's connection to the culture it sprang from, what the characters go through when all is said and done, etc. I mean, we did get that 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast that did dedicate moments of its runtime to explaining tiny little nitpicks people had with the original 1991 classic (Wiping out the memory of the prince and his castle from the civilians of the kingdom, explaining why the servants were also cursed etc.)...yet is anybody going to try and argue this makes the 2017 version better than the original animated masterpiece. Because, spoiler alert...it wasn't.

Whether or not I liked or didn't like a particular Star Wars movie, I always remembered them at least. Rise of Skywalker was already leaving my brain two minutes after I stepped out of the theater.

TRoS was a last attempt at pleasing the toxic fandom, which in itself was an attempt doomed to failure before it had even started. Because at least I whole-heartedly believe that there is nothing they can or could ever do to flip the "OT only hardliners" and the "EU enthusiasts" so I can only hope that they understood that now and stop listening to those people

TLJ just takes everything that was built up in the first film which was actually an ok movie aand throws it out the window. Instead we got a movie with no logic, no likeable characters besides Poe and Finn, and a movie that sets up the third one for complete failure

lol Since I watched this movie and saw all the hate on the internet and people complaining about stuff that had explanation behind that they didn't get it I said: "There are people who liked this movie, and people who didn't understand it." I had a counter argument to ever single criticism people had about this movie... Everything people would point out they didn't like, I would explain why they simply didn't get it. I dare anyone to throw a plot hole at me and I can explain what they missed.

Good point. After all, the old jedi order started training kids in their preteens, so I could see the force being unconsciously used by a young woman in times of stress. That and all the fans complaining that Luke didn't use the force till after he met Obi Wan. A) I thought the force was a mystical energy field with a mind of its own, not high level calculus. Sometimes it's more powerful in one person, or manifests differently, sometimes it's less. People scream that the force has to reach its apex in Luke, as though we cannot have more powerful characters than him. It's fan favoritism, and I think it would make the Star Wars universe a whole lot duller. "You know the protagonist of the first Star Wars movie? Well he's the apex of power, no one can be more powerful than him." Seems to really set the universe up for failure, or at least a long slide into mediocrity. B) Why the hell can't the force manifest in a freaking teenager. Weren't plenty of teens in the old jedi order padawans who were going on adventures with their masters? C) You want midiclorians? You want the force to be explained scientifically? Cause this sort of whining about the slightest inconsistency is how you convince the writers to bring back midichlorians. After all, the fandumb screamed that the force has to be consistent, so you'd better come up with iron hard rules for it.

Sequel Trilogy was set to fail once they didn’t blueprint it out with a developed plot to cover across the films and instead made every film their own story essentially. What kills me is they had a ton of material from the old expanded universe/Legends novels to draw inspiration from but made it a nostalgic callback series with more humor than storytelling.

The director shift is so painfully clear in some decisions. We went from a deconstruction of the themes of Star Wars and the start of an evolution of them to something that feels exactly like a movie from the original triology, which is kind of a step backwards. It really felt like there was an active attempt to undermine every single thing TLJ said.

Yes. Rian gave a new meaning for all the themes in Star Wars. Poe is an impulsive pilot who always win - Rian made Poe face his flaws to become something more than just a good pilot. Twisted Pixel Plays I loved TLJ. Over the past few months I sat down and watched all of the SW movies for the first time since I was a kid. I hadn’t seen any of the new ones (or any trailers) prior to this. The last time I had seen the movies was when I was a kid and didn’t really know what the whole plot of the movies were bc I was a child and only paid attention to the fights lol. I’ve enjoyed these new movies a LOT. I totally get why people adore the original trilogy. I’ve always loved the prequels. However, I personally enjoyed RoS the most of any of the SW movies.

While I hear these industry terms thrown around in various videos I watch, I don't know what most of them are/mean. It's nice to see Mikey pleasing more than just the "target" audience. He tends to be clever like that.

I have to agree. When I first saw the Last Jedi in the theater, I left feeling like I had seen the best movie in the whole series, and the future of Star Wars felt so bright and unpredictable. Subsequent viewings have dampened my opinion of it, but I was so glad it did something so daring and different.

Anitogame great question. The reality is Mary Sue is a meaningless buzzword only taken seriously by idiots and fuckboys. Any objective definition of Mary Sue that applies to Rey or her actions is so woefully broad and open ended that it also applies to Luke, and superman, and batman, and probably Odysseus. Calling any character a Mary Sue and actually meaning it is evidence of brain damage. The only real upside to Mary Sue is that you can easily spot true scumbags by its use. Because the only people who take the charge of Mary Sue seriously are inept manchilds who believe "teh feminazis are coming for our foreskins in the night."

Mary Sue is just a trope, and tropes are not bad. Villain Sues in particular are great. Hero Sues can be great if they're campy and sincere enough, like Beowulf, Aragorn, The Powerpuff Girls, and Kim Possible.

Stephen Schaefer where is it going to go. This is supposed to be the two towers, the middle movie. It is supposed to set us up for the endgame of the series. There is no resistance, the first order (inexplicably powerful after the end of the force awakens) in shambles again, no support for the 'good guys' from anyone. Characters that were set up in the first movie that were set up to be foils or challenges to main characters were thrown away or turned into weak punching bags. Rey continues to Mary sue her way through every encounter except Snoke, but her husbando offs him with no trouble, after he changes his goals with a no real explanation, other than that she is his waifu apparently. A second weird not relationship to go along with the Fin and Rose debacle. The whole movie reeked of style over substance, where star wars has always had at least a veneer of function over form. (Why does white salt cover red salt, because Hoth, and the battlefield looks bloody as they drag Grond up to the gates.) Sorry, got a little ranty there. But seriously, where can they go? Who will they fight, and why should we bother to care when there is no one worth caring about to watch? (Edit for some clarification)

jon simpson The fact that you only seem to find it "worth caring" if there is a Skywalker or a Solo fighting Darth Evil, is exactly the reason Star Wars needed to be brought to a place where it could tell other stories. The movie didn't take away direction, it only took away the expectation that this movie or any after it would just go down the list and check all the boxes. Rey and Kylo were set on arcs that, by the end of the movie, had them taking actions for their own reasons and not as puppets for some grand design. Kylo's dialogue is not exactly subtle about this, nor the fact that he shattered his helmet in the first act of the film.

Star wars has told other stories. With characters that had different names. The old expanded universe, and Rogue one. I enjoyed Rogue one, it had it's problems but Jin was a reasonably good character, and Cassian had some really good moments. It brought a darker side to the resistance and showed in more detail why they were willing to go as far as they did. I think the prequels should have been about Obi wan and I have explanations but that is not this. The Rey and Kylo arc had potential, the problem is they didn't develop it. You say they went on their own paths. The way I see it is as follows; KYLO: Started the movie as the apprentice of Snoke, killed him, and took his place. (Weird sentence) the path that the sith are supposed to take, the path he told Rey he wanted to do away with. Kylo smashing his helmet doesn't really make sense given Snoke's lack of reaction to it in the previous movie. Also, given Kylo's desire to be like Vader in the first movie, the act of smashing it makes sense with his new drive to kill the past, is in contrast with his wish to be like Vader, and makes no sense with his assuming of Snoke's mantle at the end. REY: Started the movie with Luke (HERO OF THE REBELLION), and ended the movie AS Luke (HERO OF THE RESISTANCE). After being shown by Luke the flaws in the light side of the force, and seeing for herself the danger of the dark side. I really don't see how they are following their own drives and moving toward their own goals. Please explain what direction you see for the 'final?' movie of the trilogy.

jon simpson Kylo and Rey are in the same positions in the larger sense of things but as I said before, they are doing these things for their own reasons. Kylo let go of his obsession with legacy, with Darth Vader, and with Sith destiny. Rey acknowledged that she didn't come from Skywalkers or Kenobis, that she wasn't going to be trained as part of the Jedi Order by the wise sage Luke, and that there's no Greater Destiny that determines her purpose. She did not rise up as the protege of Luke preserving the Order. She rose up as someone who wanted to save her friends. Star Wars has told ten stories on film. Three are on Vader, three on Luke the son of Vader, one on getting the Death Star plans for the movie above, and one on Han before the rebellion. TFA was about Leia's son killing Han while everyone is searching for... Luke. TLJ cleared the board. No more Luke. No more Jedi Order versus Darth Evil. The scrappy rebellion lost their fight against the mighty space fleet of doom. They're going to have to talk about Finn and Rey and Poe and Kylo as they are now, and not about how they're connected to movies from 30 years ago. And after that they're going to have to talk about someone other than the Skywalkers. TLJ set them free from all that. It's time to let the old things die. The Jedi Order must end. Look at the tree. Look at the throne room. The past is literally burned to the ground. To answer your question, I don't know what they're going to do in IX. And I REALLY don't know what Johnson is going to do with his other trilogy. AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHY I'M EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE OF STAR WARS.

Well I suppose that makes sense, from a certain point of view. I still see too many breaks from the force awakens and the rest of the series without any explanation as to why. It bothered me in the force awakens as well. Why is the first order so powerful after the first movie? Why is the republic gone, did they only hold one system? Where is their fleet? Why isn't there a multinational force coming after the first order for what they have done, their superweapon is gone? Why is Rey so immediately skilled in all things Jedi? Why is the resistance so wimpy? Why is there no concequenses from the last movie? Fin is up from a spine cut a in week maybe? Totally fine. Po, responsible for blowing up the death planet, is shat on constantly. Why? Aren't you in a war? (Actually the whole Po situation is borderline un-forgivable to me) Star wars has always had fairly big gaps in time between movies, in universe. And the text crawl allowed them to bring you up to date on what happened between. This has alway felt a bit like a montage, for training or even plot. A quick dump of exposition so we can get into the story for the movie. They barely used it in TLJ.

Very late comment on this, but exactly my thoughts. Two very good reasons why he didn't wipe the floor with her like he did Finn were because A. Rey is a confirmed Force Sensitive, and B. He was likely suffering multiple fractured ribs and a considerable amount of internal injuries. He basically took a frag grenade to the gut, and he still kept coming. He was already gassed by the time Rey finally took her shot at him.

The fact that Kylo was injured, had yet to complete his training was extremely mentally conflicted at that time and was still coming out on top is more of a testament to how he is the overpowered one but Rey gets like one hit in so that suddenly changes all context apparently

Star Wars fans have a love/hate relationship with their franchise because of their passion and expectations! When fans have to wait for years between sequals, the fatasy of in what direction future story lines should go, gets stronger and stronger and they work out ALL the kinks! .....Until they become convinced that THEIR version of the characters future is the ONLY logical outcome... They got it all figured out and in their minds the saga can ONLY progress in THAT way!! That story continuation becomes so lodged in their brains throughout the years that it becomes canon for them!! So when a sequal is finally released they are almost always dissapointed because the story didn't go as they thought! Their Star Wars universe, a personal fantasy, carefully crafted in their minds, came crashing down when the actual sequal came out and took a different turn! You just can't understand that because you probably only go to the movies once in a while you probably aren't a diehard star wars fan so you'l never understand that. The story of the prequels is a very interesting story, full of new characters and new cultures and it's a complete new era of Star Wars. The Force Awakens is a literally a copy of A New Hope. And George not only cared about the story but he also cared about the thematics of those movies so there's new worlds introduced like Geonosis, there's new cultures, new species. So no, the movies might not have been the best (except for ROTS) but the story is better than the originals i'd say. The originals is just a basic hero vs villain story while the prequels introduce these two parties, the republic and the separatist and give us a story about the rise of the sith to power and the downfall of the good guys. There's a story there and quite an interesting one at that so yeah if you say that, you're basically ignorant if you don't understand the prequels. When you understand about the story, you can go ahead and criticize the prequels all you want.

The Phantom Menace is a literally an abomination to everything that Star Wars stood for, complete with fart jokes and racial stereotypes. And the people at Disney not only cared about the story but they also cared about the thematics of those movies as seen with the theme of failure from the Last Jedi and not being tied to bloodlines like in Rise of Skywalker. There's new worlds introduced like Jakku, there's new cultures, new species. So no, the movies might not have been the best (except for TLJ) but the story is better than the flawed as hell Lego commercials called the prequels. Lester Lee Then you suspect wrong, but keep going, and some day your suspicion may be right. "Marey Sue" is combination of phrase "Mary Sue" and the name of TFA's main character by the name of "Rey". It is supposed to indicate, Rey from TFA is a textbook example of a Mary Sue. My point is, the archetype of a Mary Sue (or a Gary Stu, if a character is male) means an unnaturaly skilled in most possible areas significant for the story, who is deffinitely "good" without a reason, and most other characters are in awe of her (or him, if we are talking about Gary Stu). Of course she doesn't, she isn't allowed to make mistakes. That goes against her perfection. She never falls to temptation, she never fails and she always comes out on top. Truly a character to which one can relate. Oh wait....

She literally spends the entire first like, two thirds of the movie fucking up, like, consistently, and giving into her temptations of the dark side almost willfully. Did you actually watch the film?

Never once is that indicated in the film that that was a bad thing for her to do. Just that it was her way of discovering that it didn't hold what she wanted. In fact the film spends the entire time trying to convince us that the binary of light and dark is the problem to begin with, it gives her a scapegoat for choosing to seek out the darkness. At what point did she actually make an error and suffer for it? I watched the movie twice and still can't remember a time she suffered. Maybe a little disappointment in what Luke had become, but worry not she made the noble choice to leave him and fight for the rebels.

She spends the whole movie up until the end of the throne room fight letting herself be pulled closer and closer to the dark side, and nothing lies there but disappointment, consistently. Going down in the dark side hole leaves her with nothing but loneliness. The pull of Kylo towards the dark (and her attempts to pull him back) leave her disappointed as he affirms who he is (a space nazi) and destroys her conception of who she desperately wanted to be. Like the film is a lot of very wonderful things, but it is by no means subtle. Like she consistently makes bad choices and pays for them, up until the point that she finally chooses right, in the most important moment in the film, where she responds to Kylo's deconstruction of her by self-actualizing, and affirming who she is. She's not a hero because she's someone's kid, she's a hero because she gives a shit about making the world a better place. She wants to, ahem 'not kill the one's she hates, but save the one's she loves' (it's a cheesy, unsubtle line, but it perfectly encapsulates the film, and it's so star wars, a wonderful, spectacular, cheesy, unsubtle series of fantastic movies). Rey has never been perfect. She's impulsive, tempermental, stubborn, idealistic often to a fault, occasionally naive, she spends the majority of her life up until this point lying to herself about her parents to cope with the trauma of being abandoned. On a more concrete, star-wars-y level, she is constantly being pulled by the dark side and generally she doesn't resist that pull too hard until she sees the disappointing lack of answers the dark side represents for what they are, but she had to make the mistake of going there (like Luke in empire in the cave and going to cloud city) to learn that. The idea that she's somehow perfect for being powerful and being able to swing a glowing stick around after spending her whole life having to fend for and defend herself, is at best misunderstanding the films as they are presented and at worst willfully misinterpreting them.

If she is constantly being pulled to the dark side, and never once acts in a manner fitting someone who uses the dark side, does that mean anything? If she is tempted by the dark side up until the throne room, why does she leave the island with the goal of turning Kylo to the light? Snoke makes the connection, but doesn't manipulate the way she feels about Kylo. You say, "she consistently makes bad choices and pays for them, up until the point that she finally chooses right...", but how does she pay for them? Maybe I missed something, but on the island she 1) gets a modicum of training from Luke, 2) a monologue about how the Jedi were failures, 3) trains herself with a lightsaber (which given her abilities with a staff I'm actually fine with), 4) Talks to Kylo through Snoke's force conduit, 5) discovers the dark side holds no answers for her and 6) dominates Luke in a fight and chastises him for his selfishness. Did I miss anything? Can her being self deluded about her parents really be called a mistake given how things seemingly went down on Jakku? How is that her fault? I am still looking for a concrete way to relate to her character. Its fine if people like her, but I don't identify with her at all. All I can do is sympathize with her origin story, but can I relate to it? No. Every challenging situation she is put in, she always seems to get herself out of, the only exception being the throne room, where she actually performs better against the guard than Kylo. I am open to being convinced her value as a character, my evidence that I decided to even watch this video. But, alas, I've seen far too many excellent and point by point critiques of the her character and the film in general to really think either of them very good. I would be open to hearing specific example of how decisions SHE has made have negatively affected others or her character.

I loved the Force Awakens and was fine with the few recycled plot elements. It was the first one without George there so I could understand why they would want to play it a bit safe. It felt like a traditional Star Wars movie which is exactly what they needed to assure people they could do. Last Jedi I definetly wanted things to be shaken up and they were. Rian Johnson took risks and tried things that I greatly approve of. Rey being nobody special for instance seperates her from Luke and allows her to be her own character with her own strengths and flaws things that were very present in Force Awakens. With JJ were likely to get a more traditional Star Wars again and I'm fine with that, but even knowing that the Last Jedi left things in such a way that it is literally impossible for him to recycle old plot points. Adding to that is that his co writer for Rise of skywalker is completely fresh to i. t

Cole Garland The problem with that is, lore in most cases exists as a basic rulebook to a fictional universe. If the rules can be discarded merely to serve a story that would otherwise be inconvenienced by said rules, than the rules themselves cease to matter. It becomes a narrative free-for-all, with no limitations. "Everything is permitted, nothing is forbidden." Character agency becomes superfluous, and thus we the audience lose all investment in those characters and their place in the world. A story without active investment in the outcome just becomes a whole lot of nonsense.

That comes with the territory of continuing a 40 year old movie franchise. People are going to care more about the universe than the characters and stories you put in it, at least initially.

When you set a precedent for something being possible or impossible and then break that rule later to serve the story, it's takes away the impact of the payoff because you don't know where the stakes are. Like Leia saving herself from the vacuum of space. There's no precedent for it, no reason to think Leia has any force training if we want to only reference the movies. Same with Rey being so good at everything (better than Yoda ever was at moving rocks, not even breaking a sweat) with no explanation in the movies. It contradicts the established precedent that consciously and directly using the Force is hard and takes concentration and training. She doesn't have room to grow and never appears to be in any physical danger, so the stakes and my investment in the character are on the floor.
