I see my wardrobe as a reflection of how well I know myself : what do I like, where do I live, what do I do, and who do I want to be? I feel that as I better answer these questions, the better my outfits reflect who I am. People like Rick who have a really defined wardrobe know who they are, and that's why most people's style "progression" leads them to a "uniform" as they get older.
Haider, Raf and Yohji all have great uniforms. They don't always wear the same thing every time but they pretty much only wear their own designs which I think is cool and shows that it's really part of their identity.
How funny, I just made the move to be more consistent in my wardrobe, I want to eventually make a personal uniform from a more avant-garde standpoint. Thank you so much for your entertaining and informational videos, you bring a lot of life to the fashion community on YT!

I virtually wear the same thing everyday with slight variations. I know what I like and how things look on me, especially with a casual wardrobe, that I feel comfortable on a day to day. I rarely buy clothes now.
I feel like Wes Anderson has sort of figured his uniform out and it really works for him. It then sort of carries over to his films. Aesthetic GOD!🙏🏽🙏🏽
I love this! So for me, it's about narrowing down my uniform(s). I've been a minimalizing a long time and lately I've been exploring fashion. Primarily what suits me, followed by how I feel in the look. I have learned what's best for my figure, I've narrowed down my color pallet, but now I want to narrow down to a handful of specific looks. I don't want to wear the same thing everyday either, but if literally everything I own can work with every other piece in my collection. Ideally, I want to have only one large suitcase of clothes and accessories. And I want to figure out the best way to do that in a place with all 4 seasons.
I have a pile of graphic t-shirts, mostly in blue, black, and red. Blue jeans pants, flannel button-up shirts, and comfortable blue sneakers to pair with the jeans. Since almost everything I do in my daily life is casual or work, these are the pieces I own the most of. Yes, there is a pair of khaki denim pants, there are some different jackets, but, all in all, it goes back to this very street, very casual style. I am finally studying fashion on my own, after years of feeling awfully dressed (I'm currently 30 yo), because I spent my life in uniforms. So I want to express myself more and better with new clothes, even if the uniform will not go away. I'd much rather play _with_ the uniform, around it, changing just a piece or two of the combination, than radically changing it all.
The late great Dylan Rieder had and will forever have the best “uniform” to me. White tank top tucked into black slacks or black wax jeans with a nice flooded cuff at the hems. Black dress socks and a nice worn pair of leather black driving loafers. *chefs kiss* Rest In Peace to the GOAT 🙏🏾💙🕊
clothes that tv series characters wore are a great example of a personal uniform, they are typicaly not wearing the same exact garments, but they are simmilar to each other. It make me think about my uniform goal is. Anyway great video as always!
I love variety, and I like too many different styles that I will either never develop a uniform or be pretty old by the time I do have one. On the other hand, I know exactly what I _don't_ like. So in a way I do have a uniform but it's mostly determined by broader distinctions like fit, color/pattern, shape, theme etc.
I have to say that your video is the best I have seen regarding a uniform. It’s the first time I have ever heard aesthetics connected to this. I love this way of looking at this. It’s not about looking the same but feeling the same. I usually find the tech guys uniforms boring but fashion people have great uniforms. Thanks for a great video. Great vid man! I'd say the person who first comes to mind is your fellow youtuber TheReportOfTheWeek. His aesthetic is part of his brand, and while I think his suits could use some tailoring, his commitment to vintage men's fashion is admirable. Coming from the north, it's tricky to stick to a certain look year round. So I've been leaning into an athleisure, mostly-black wardrobe for awhile now.
Really liked this insight on the uniform. Sometimes I’ll do a thought exercise on the “ghost outfit.” Like if you died and were a ghost forever, what would you be wearing lol.
As a minimalist I slowly but surely landed in a uniform of a black t shirt and a pair of jeans. It is super simple and allows me to travel with less clothing. The other amazing part is that everytbing goes with black so that is one less thing I have to match with. I add variety and fashion through my shoes, socks and jackets.
Absolutely love this episode and the capsule wardrobe one you did awhile back! My favorite uniform dresser rn imo has be Jakob Hetzer. His style can easily be dressed up or down given the circumstance.
I love this post. I have recently made a video about my style uniform and how it was inspired by what fashion designers wear ( consistent ,black and easy) . Having a uniform / aesthetic makes shopping and dressing up easier! For me Rick Owens wears his uniform the best. Since the early 200s but I love the idea that his style pendulum sort of swings from the subtle (tank top and shorts) to advanced ( kiss boots, coat) depending on his mood but everything is still Rick Owens!
I wear a black rain jacket/windbreaker almost every day. In the winter it´s a parka, made from a similar material, just longer and with more insulation. I live at the baltic sea coast in northern Germany, so the weather is usually windy and often rainy. I think it´s worth mentioning that Steve Jobs lived and worked in California mostly, where the weather is usually nice. Most people don´t have that luxury.
I had a personal uniform for the past couple of years. It consists of a sweatshirt (usually stone island or Fred Perry), wide shortened trousers simple sneakers (Reebok club c, af 1, nb 990) and accessories: rings, chains, dad hats and bags
Christian, I like to wear the same type of dress slacks to work every day, either black or dark navy. They fit well and it is one less thing I have to think about while getting ready for work.
tbh I sometimes think about pants in the same way, I'll have a pair of trousers / jeans that have just the right fit I'm looking for and I'll rotate a lot of different tops
I think a really overlooked “uniform,” type is when a musical or performance artist has a unique wardrobe for a tour/ series of shows. The likes of Kanye West during his Yeezus era, Michael Jackson with the different colored Leather zip jackets during the Thriller Era, Johnny Cash with the black pearl snaps and suits. Things like this act almost as a curation of their own style but help to define that individual, similar to how these individuals create a brand for themselves. Idk, just a thought.
I’ve found in the past couple months since finding the advanced aesthetic series, I only wear black tee shirts, grey black brown or white pants, and boots. It has freed up money for me to buy more luxury tee shirts, better pants, and now I can save up for Guidi boots

I agree that I think one day this will be the vibe for me. My goal has always been to be a 60 year old grandfather wearing a variation of: Black cashmere sweater (crew neck) White CDG shirt Black straight legged slacks Birkenstock Boston, or an old pair of sneakers. I want to be cool art grandad.
I once read that Mary Kate Olsen gets stuck on silhouettes and she’ll go thru long phases of wearing similar silhouettes all the time. I kind of loved that and I’ve definitely done that same sort of thing thru out my life. One thing that’s been hellla consistent is that my pant hems haven’t touched my shoes since fifth grade 😅 I either cut, cuff or hem nearly every pair of pair of pants I own. There’s like two exceptions but I hardly ever wear them.
I know everyone loves to hate the Kardashians, so people will probably hate me for this comment. 😅 But it was actually Khloe Kardashian who 'introduced' me to the idea of a style uniform, that is a bit less rigid than for example Steve Job's. I read an article where she said that her 'uniform' was jeans and a bodysuit - something that could be dressed up or down, and could be styled for most occasions. And it just seemed so beautifully simple. I do like the more laid back approach, where you technically have different pieces, that shows off the 'core aesthetic', while still allowing you to be creative. For me, my 'uniform' is a top with lace around the neckline, some wide leg jeans, and my signature gold necklace. It can be styled up or down with shoes, belts, bags, other jewellery, scarf, what typer of outer layer you choose, hairstyle, makeup, and so on. I usually choose mainly feminine pieces, but add in one or two more 'raw' elements, to balance the look. I can also play with the colours of the top and bottom, how fitted or loose the top and jeans are. In summer, I can change the jeans for a long or short A-line skirt, so it keeps the 'flare', but makes everything look different, but still similar. The whole concept of a uniform is good in business, I think. It makes you instantly recognisable, and (usually) makes you seem very in control and professional.
There is something beautiful about uniforms sometimes however it depends on the pieces. I’d much rather see some raw denim you can tell has been worn into for many years than switching out the same five pairs of Levi’s 511’s. When a garment ages well, it makes it look like you care more about your look.
Type 1 & Type 3 Denim jacket or Chore Jacket are my top block choice. Bottom with green chino or blue raw jeans. I have a consistent look and I am a denim head.
I've thought about doing a uniform for work (I work in a business casual, heavy on the casual - type of place). In a sea of very normally dressed people, I like the idea of being the one who is always classy and [x]. I'm not sure what the [x] is yet - I thought about exclusively wearing white - or always having a white element of my wardrobe. But I thought that might make me too anxious about stains haha
i have a uniform that i change a few times a year. depending how i feel i am at a stage in my life, like a musician working on an album for an undetermined and inconsistent time period of their lives. its a personal and internal seasonal shift and an "its over when its over" kinda thing.
Let me start with the confession that this video has brought me to a huge realization - I’ve fallen into a uniform and it’s not reflecting who I am. Intent is a huge factor. I think that a lot of people have probably also fallen into an accidental uniform (especially this year), by wearing the same favorite pieces all the time. And they tend to have the same core silhouette and aesthetic, or set of a few, though we may not realize it. But the question is, what does the unintentional uniform say, and are they happy with the message? To get to the right place, this video has made me realize that I need to ask myself why I am gravitating to these pieces. Is it simply comfort and convenience (probably especially true this year), or is there something else there? To figure that out, I need to examine what it is about those pieces... and then figure out how can I can take it to the next level. So, I need to try on the pieces in my wardrobe that I can’t bear to part with but never wear, and really analyze why I’m not wearing them. Is it that it’s comfortable when standing in a changing room mirror but after sitting for 15 minutes it’s cutting off circulation somewhere? Do I notice that I look like I’ve suddenly gained 15 pounds when seated? Is it that the material looks great until an hour or two later, at which point I look like I just rolled out of bed (and that’s not what I was going for 😉)? It could be a million things, but I’m going to wear it around for a day and figure out the “why.” I hope once I sort out the ’why’ of what I’m always wearing, and why I’m not wearing things I think I love, then it’s time to start on what I hate about the things I wear all the time. Get out some pins and change the shape, etc. What do I need to look for next time I’m buying? What do I need to avoid? By creating a core personal uniform that ticks ALL of the boxes, I’m hoping I can have something I love in every way every day, and then can layer on more pieces at will. In my case (latex allergy, so basically can’t buy most RTW 😡), I need to take the time to make stuff - luckily for me I have the skills. But by using the idea of a uniform, the task is not overwhelming. Pull together a core! ♥️ Thanks so much for getting me to start doing more for myself outside my head.
Loved this, I hated my school uniform so bad 😂 but looking at movies and media I would always love the school uniform 🎞️💻 actually most uniforms are dope but yeah for me a uniform is like having your own aestethic that can recognized when you wear different fits
When I was going to high school (public) I used to drive by this fancy private school on my way each day and I did think it was pretty cool that they wore blazers and preppy clothes

Nice take on the topic of personal uniform! Hard to come up with example but personally if I had to make uniform I would go with those reebok nylon balloon pants that I praise a lot and black hoodie (or white tee in the summer) for casual occasions and same pants with the white uniqlo no iron shirt for formal events. The reason is that these pants are very comfy in summer and I can wear them with thermal underwear in winter with no problem. Nylon don't show any wear at all and it's quick to dry. I can wear this set at home too without any problem since it doesn't tend to peel or wear out. It looks super clean with white formal shirt (pants have subtle pleating) even with some technical looking sneakers. It's like future formal wear reimagined. It has a lot of personality but nice and simple at the same time. If I had to go on a trip with hand luggage only that would be my go to uniform.
The concept of Uniform is kind of engraved in my head cause I go to a uniformed High School. Even though we have a pretty strict uniform, I get away with layer and wearing additional pieces (hoodies, jackets, crewnecks). Because most of the clothes I own are school uniform, It allows me to kind of have a way more focused and minimal wardrobe for outside of school. Since I’m used to uniform at school, I adopted a similar idea in my casual wardrobe and it has done me wonders.

My dad lol. Levis jeans, a polo shirt and his waist coat in tan canvas with a leather collar. And Timberland loafers. This has been his outfit since I was born
I think outside of fashion, David Dobrik has a very strong uniform that has become part of his brand. All black t-shirt and pants, and a black hat. He wears that almost everyday.
No doubt, I think DD, with one of the biggest channels on yt is likely trying to channel his personal brand by wearing a type of uniform on a regular basis
I personally focus on uniform points of fit, my measurements are approx 32/24/36 +- an inch and hip dips so it's a must for me to have a fitted high waist and then generally a fitted top heels and I am so happy with my wardrobe especially honing it with a cashmere or silk top. From there I think my future is going more into higher necklines. Not sure what anyone has to gain from this comment but gaining praises to uniforms are great

I admire people who can pull off a fashion uniform. But I don't think its for me, I'm far too ecclectic as a person, and get bored easily. Can't even keep the same haircut lol. I think Lenny Kravitz has the best uniform. All Black: Shades, Dress shirt, leather jacket, leather/denim trousers trousers, boots.
Slightly off topic, but for literal uniforms I find that there even though there tends to be a "by the book" way to wear it, there can be consistent small differences in how people wear them: are the pants tucked into the boots or do they use boot blousers? What type of boots are they wearing and are they clean? Do they wrap the excess lace around the shaft or tuck all of it in? How loose do they wear their cuffs and do they fold their cap a certain way? Are these micro-differences "style"? I would say so, it's a conscious and consistent expression of self clothing, even though everyone is technically wearing the same thing. One iconic company uniform is the Prabal Gurung Sephora uniform (black shift dress with red stripe) I always loved the pleat with the pop of red in the back! Recently I feel like I've fallen into a very kaileemckenzie inspired outfit formula of a white button up underneath a cropped boxy navy t-shirt with black straight leg or tapered trousers and black chunky boots. I feel like it's flexible enough to fit most of the environments/moods I am in. Sometimes the button up is silk, or a blue stripe instead, sometimes the t shirt is a sweater vest, a waistcoat, a shift dress. The pants can be cotton canvas, crepe, or denim (or a skirt). I keep trying to switch it up but feel uncomfortable when I do. So I guess it's my uniform for now. Maybe I'll eventually get bored of it? Two uniform dressers that come immediately come to mind for me are Caroline Herrera and Fran Lebowitz. I also had a teacher that only wore three piece suits in a variety of colors that he made himself (loved that!)
For me it's black jeans. I've got 3 different pairs and they're basically the only pants I wear. Very easy to go with anything I decide to throw on top.
If you think about it, there are some people that have ever changing but still very recognisable uniforms. Like Kanye’s pink polo and then the red leather jacket following the maison margiela oversized jacket and pants and ending with comfy yeezy clothes, all very different but equally iconic and recognisable.
I had a pretty recognizable uniform for about a year before getting bored of it. I would wear a pair of straight leg work pants or jeans and a varsity cardigan with the same loafers every single day. It was fun for a while but I felt bad for all the clothes sitting in my closet unworn

Tom Sachs having his own Nike shoe and having everyone in his art studio wear the same shoe is a fun take on the uniform. I was able to be apart of the Mars Yard 2.5 wear testing class for 2021. There is a community that revolves around the shoe. when you wear it shows that you are apart of that community and you subscribe to Tom Sachs ideas and principles. Honestly Zuckerberg is right. Wearing the same shoe every day for 8 weeks made planning outfits so much easier.
This is such an interesting subject I feel there are different sides to the spectrum of people who have personal uniform.You have the Rick Owens/Thom Browne folks who KNOW style but are content in their specific aesthetic...But then you have the folks that stick to ONE look either bc they just don’t care about fashion or bc it’s cheap and works for them..however in my history of dealing with these people,they’re the ones who were always quick to judge the ones of us who are willing to take risks and try new styles.and for that I’m not a fan.
My "uniform" is the r/MaleFashionAdvice "MFA Basic Bastard": tucked in button downs and pants. Button down collars stand up better than "regular" collars, tucked in shirts make for a cleaner silhouette and it's acceptable almost anywhere. Vary the footwear (loafers or boat shoes are very different from oxfords and boots.) Vary the shirt (sometimes it's an oxford, sometimes it's poplin, sometimes it's a linen shirt), throw on a sport coat or a casual jacket and I've upped the function and changed the look. Roll the sleeves up and undo some buttons when it gets hotter, it's a functional micro-climate. Plus, it's a flex on the poors and the plebs that _I_ have an ironed shirt and an "sooo dressed up." I don't pretend this saves on "decision fatigue," because I am not some ultra busy individual and I definitely aren't _ten minutes a day_ richer, smarter, whatever than the next guy, but it's a convenient schema on which to hang my outfits and starting point of where to go from. Colors and materials are still something I vary and there is room to riff on a theme. I'm not necessarily looking to strip any excitement out of getting dressed.
Although he deviates from time to time i still think of it as a uniform, the recent Playboi Carti dracula/rockstar always wearing leather is amazing to me and something i've been trying to develop for myself too
I searched this topic because I find it interesting. I have my own uniform. I wear work or outdoor pants, a work or outdoor collared shirt. Brown boots. Typically square toe western work boots. A ball cap, and sunglasses. Every day, with a few exceptions. I’m sure no one would consider it fashionable. But I fit into my area relatively well. It’s comfortable for me. I feel capable wherever I am.
As you said a uniform doesn't need to be as strict, Rick Owens as you said is a good example of it a uniform in my opinion is where people can identify who you are by the pieces you wear (they see an outfit and say ohhh thats Mario's or so on). That requieres a level of consistency but also a level of distinction and therefore I don't think you could make a uniform out of an Alpha Industries bomber. Johnny Depp is a good example of this, he doesn't always wear the same things but it is easy to identify who he is through the clothes he wears, his accessories and his hair
