I have just purchased the JDM only FD2 Type R.
It was this car that I knew I had to own during the first 10 minutes of test drive.
Now, after a 500km road trip, my fondness of this car only crystallised and solidified even more. So I decided I must make a video about how special this car is.
Having driven quite a few performance cars, new and old, I must say the FD2 is a truly special car regardless of its understated and sedan form factor.
I really hope to share exactly how special it is with you guys in this rather lengthy video review.

This was a really good explanation and analysis of FD2R Everyone considering the car see this Great job buddy And yeah many people brush it off without ever trying one because it's "just a civic" but Honda really went to town on the engineering

Great video, awesome review, it has sold me on an FD2! I’ve always loved Hondas, and have owned several, including a DC2R about 15 years ago which I didn’t appreciate at the time, and I’m eager for another Type R. My wife’s GK Fit isn’t cutting it lol, as good a car as it is. Engines these days aren’t willing to rev like this, it’s really special.

Im glad im able to convince you. If there is anything that i dislike about the car it will be: 1) drive by wire, lack of throttle feel 2) slightly higher seating position Everything else is basically perfection. I dont mind at all that it is fwd, because its corners very neutrally.

This car feels like you are playing a game and gives you more and more confidence to steer the car in crazy way.. i have fd1 which is pretty basic and top speed is 200kmh but the chassis and hydraulic steering wheel give me the driving pleasure.. atleast the 30% of what you got but still the more i drive more i love this artistic machine :)

Thank you for taking us for a ride in your FD2R. Awesome video. I see that you have FD2R with a small fog light and also volume control at your steering. From the rear of your car is Zenki model, but with those small things i mention that are different from those that i looked at(wink..wink...you know where i am heading) it look like Kouki facelift model. Can you share a bit more details? I also saw some with the small little nipple(switch or something) next to the Engine start button too 😂😇

Nice! Very low mileage! I am very excited for you. If you’re used to driving European cars you might feel like the car is very tinny at first, but you get used to it quickly and the lightness of the chassis will really shine through. This car weights about 1260kg which is marginally lighter than the new GR86, a dedicated sports car! I will be posting another video of this car soon about getting it remapped. Awesome video man! Thanks for the really detailed review. I have long wanted to get one of these. I opted for a Hyundai i20N late last year and while that car is great, I still yearn for a rev happy NA, so much so I bought a Swift Sport ZC32S as my daily driver to keep the kms down on the i20N and I find myself enjoying the drive more as it loves to rev. I had an Australian delivered detuned Honda Integra Type R back in the day and I miss it very much, I didn't appreciate it as much as I should have when I was younger and ignorant. I've also owned an Evo IX and X (unsure which Evo you're referring to) and always enjoyed a FWD with a decent LSD more. Watching your video definitely gives me the itch to sell the Hyundai and buy one of these. But damn are they expensive here! Props for driving like a maniac on suburban street haha, the lack of policing in Thailand is amusing.

Thanks for your comment! My channel is very small but I really enjoy reading comments like yours. I definately prefer a high revving NA engine over a torquey turbocharged engine. In fact, I think modern day turbo engines are trying too hard to be like and feel like NA engines, but they always end up feeling flat and less responsive. I actually prefer the drama and build up of old school turbos more. Maybe im just old fashioned. I also owned an Evo, but mine is a 7, but I chose the FD2 over it.The 7 has great handling and turn in, but I could never fall in love with the engine. The FD2 dynamically speaking is just as good if not better than the Evo, and when paired with the K20 motor, it is just in another league of a proper driver's car. We dont get cool Hyundais in Thailand, but I am very curious to try one. It has captured the enthusiasm of so many journalists that I respect and follow. I wonder how to i20N compares to the Fiesta ST, which we also dont get here,, sigh...

@@FizzyMotors Yeah I feel the same way about turbo engines. However they are nice when just driving around normally with the torque down low. I have driven a Ford Fiesta ST mk7, but not the mk8. Most journo’s comment the 3cylinder engine is more likeable than the i20N’s I think I’d agree with that. The i20N is much more track focused than the ST, but the ST is more fun and playful to drive. I’d love to test drive the FD2 civic type r, there’s very few advertised for sale in Australia and the ones advertised are overpriced unfortunately.

Sweet review, I love the FD2R however in USA we never got it, we did get the Civic FA5 Si version of this ride. It has a K20Z3 that makes 197hp at 8k rpms. The suspension is close to the same or the same but everything outside of that is a lil lesser than the type r variant. Soon I will be sourcing fd2 parts for my car

American/Canadian FA5/FG2 Si suspension is no where near as stiff as the Fd2 Type R.

@yukonstriker1703 it's close to it, not exact at all, but the FD2 was stiffer due to seam welding to the chassis and braces added to it as per a Japanese catalog of the car I looked at 😀

Thanks CU for your message, appreciate it dude :) Can I ask what engine remap and exactly how and what you did to your FD2? With your GT Porsche in what way does it give you a lot more satisfaction - in fun factor alone or in some areas? I've had other Hondas as I said like FK8 + Pre-Facelift 2001 UK EP3 many years ago and loved it. I'm attracted to this car as due to the extremely sharp throttle response, the beautifully K20a Engine overall. Do you think if I buy FD2 over the EP3 (JDM) this would be a smart move and would enjoy it more ? Do you think the FD2 is an appreciating car here in the UK. If I get Koni Shocks for the rear if I get FD2 do you think this will definately not make it so stiff? . Can I ask you CU - the FD2 is not Skittish from Stock in other words it's so bumpy you it feels dangerous to put the full power down. Can you feel the LSD in FD2 work well? Thanks Richard

Hi Thank You for your detailed reply. Apologies I don't know your name. Yes, my head and heart instantly loved the looks. Such a cool car to have and stand out as I agree with you for the UK. I really appreciate your advice and comments on this. Q. Is low down torque matter or a problem do you think? I had also entertained getting another FK8 as same money here in UK on the 2nd hand market but to be honest even though a great car the turbo lagged annoyed me and only think let this down and I soon got rid of it as got bored. I know I love high revving engines and Hondas apart from that as had an ~EP3 Pre-Facelift years ago a loved it and the FD2 looks even better - and I know therefore I would the FD2. Q. Anything you don;t like about the FD2 it looks like it will always put a smile on your face dude :) Love that Thanks Richard

you're welcome. you can call me CU The lack of torque down low was indeed something that I did not enjoy. But after an engine remap, it helped tremendously. I also moved the vtec rpm lower to around 4200rpm instead of the near 6000rpm from the factory. It results in a smooth transition, which some people might not like, but also takes advantage of the higher cam profiles which maximizes the area under the power/torque curve. One thing I must emphasize is just how good the short gearing and gearshifts are on the car. I also own a 996 GT3, and the civic is so much more fun when it comes to shifting. If there is anything I don't like about my civic, it would be the mods which I did to it. I changed the air filter to a mugen unit. and I don't like how droney it is now. I want to change it back. I also changed the engine mounts (stock ones are perished and new ones are extremely expensive), to hard race engine mounts. and I am not a fan of them at all. It transmits a lot of unwanted vibrations into the cabin.

Hi Truely awesome video and review - so much detail I love. I have seen an FD2 and I'm from the UK very keen to get one and this car looks Epic - But I am also considering the EP3 (JDM) White to. Really confused - The more I see the videos of the FD2 the more I think knowing myself well this is the car for me. Would love your urgent advice as I need to make a decision by Monday. **The only thing putting me off the FD2 is people say its awfully stiff. Its just a car to enjoy as I don;t daily drive it to work as work from home. The one I'm looking at as Koni Shocks at Rear so hopefully this makes a difference. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks Richard

To me the FD2 is peak FWD Type R. It has the best version of the K20 engine and also the best chassis. If your only concern is regarding the stiffness, well that is very easy to change. Ohlins even make a very nice kit for the FD2, if you have the budget. I bought mine with Buddy Club Racing (inverted shocks). And I must say I am very happy with them. Also this is a personal opinion, but I think the FD2 looks better than the EP3. And will certainly stand out more in the UK as well if you go to car meets. Just make sure you find a good one.

in thailand we get gasohol 95 which is 5% ethanol blend. but since ive tuned the car I've been running it on E20 which is 20% ethanol, for the higher octane rating.

Rev limit is 8600 Peak torque as dynod was about 6500rpm Peak power 7700rpm However i did remap the ecu of my car You can see more details in my other video

I test the drove the car before i bought the car. Maybe you should test drive one if you can. It wasnt a deal breaker for me. In fact i sold my evo7 and bought the fd2. The rawness and the screaming top end of the engine is worth it for me.

@@sontec5355 im in Thailand. Congratulations! It really is a great car. But if you’re used to driving European cars from the early 2000s and 90s, at first you might find the steering a bit too light and numb, especially when high speed cornering, you might be taken aback by how light the steering is. But once you get used to it and trust in the car, you’ll find that it is actually not bad at all, and eventually you’ll grow to like it.
