Applause to Luis on To Pimp a Butterfly. Did NOT expect to see that record ever mentioned on SoT. But like Luis said, it was a 10 from first listen. Sonically superb, composed brilliantly, and if you can at all get into rap lyrically you can unpack the record for years. One of my favorite records of all time.

I grew up in the seventies. Among my best memories are of my mom driving my sister and me to school, with the 8-track playing at any given moment Jim Croce, Simon & Garfunkel, Seals & Crofts, Bread, Diana Ross and the Carpenters. Brings back to memory the scene from Tommy Boy, where the late great Chris Farley and David Spade are driving cross country and the radio starts playing the Carpenters' Superstar. Priceless.

Wake Up, It's Tomorrow is definitely my favorite, featuring outstanding tracks like "Sitting on a Star", "Tomorrow" (their only other Top 40 hit), "Sit with a Guru", "Curse of the Witches" and the gorgeous "Pretty Song from Psych-Out". Someone mentioned Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention ? I had the privilege of seeing both bands live in the 70's and both very good.Especially Steeleye with the great Maddy Prior on vocals. At that time I was more into the hard rock and metal stuff so went along for the hell of it and was quite surprised how good they were as musicians and perfomers. In a way those concerts had an effect on me and developed an appreciation for this folk rock style of music.I think the more you listen the more you might just catch on to it.

Man i love so many genres away from the obvious to this channel--trip hop, hip hop, Industrial, classical, post hardcore, Indie, punk, etc etc but even for anyone who knows me a i do have some albums i love who would maybe shock friends so i'll go a top ten of those in no specific order 1. Duran Duran---Rio, 2. Duran Duran----Seven And The Ragged Tiger 3.. Seal---debut album. 4. Madonna-Erotica. 5. Madonna, --Bedtime Stories. 6. Level 42--True Believers 7. David Sylvian--Secrets Of The Beehive 8. For shame as it's a compilation album-10CC Greatest Hits. actually thats about it for what i'd really call guilty pleasures I expected more to spring to mind. I have to say as far as Banshees go, Kaleidoscope and Ju Ju are obvious stand out albums for me with John Mc Geoch on guitar, superb albums, Radiohead's A Moon Shaped pool is awesome.

Enjoyed this show immensely. Just like the HVS show of Guilty Pleasures and the earlier In The Prog Seat show of what you don't care for, this show gives us a little insight into just how wide and how deep the love of music runs with all the Prog Seat squares. Until the end, didn't think I would have anything George might mention but the Dirt by Alice in Chains came to my attention from some earlier SoT shows. And love Luis' attitude about WTF, no guilt about what he listens to and enjoys. But the personal winner for me is Steven and his love for TV themes and movie music as well. Have been peppered so often with questions like "Why do you have a CD of TV theme shows?" and "Why do you keep trying to learn and playing piano bits from movies and TV", Steven spoke well for my love of that as well. Spoke to some pleasures on the HVS similar show but my music love runs far and wide since I studied classical piano for years and grew up in a house where Dad liked Dixieland jazz and played classical violin, upright bass, banjo and piano and Mom liked the big band era and singers like Sinatra, Bennett, Doris Day, Judy Garland, etc. and played piano and organ. But for one who does love a lot of prog, have a strong tendency towards Power Pop [the Raspberries, The Wondermints, Cheap Trick, etc.], the blues [Muddy Waters, Lead Belly, Big Mama Thornton, etc.], classical [particularly Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky], 60s garage rock [mostly singles here but check out the boxed set Nuggets] and, more currently, a listening and following of Lady Gaga. There's a lot more - including much of what was mentioned in this show - but it's all good. Thanks for the fun, everyone, and as alway, thanks to Pete for the lists he posted.

Great, great show! I get it, it's all in good fun and it's basically just choices from genres that you wouldn't usually hear talked about on here but in absolutely no world could I describe Bjork, Prince, Radiohead, James Brown, Springsteen, Bob Marley, B-52s, Simon & Garfunkel AND STEVIE WONDER as "guilty pleasures"!! Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly is an absolute modern masterpiece. To anyone who wouldn't give it the time of day based on it being hip-hop, I'd say just give it a chance. Headphones, the full works. There's a great vintage funk and jazz foundation on that album. The grooves! That bassline on 'King Kunta'! Ernie Isley, George Clinton guesting. Kendrick Kamar himself is an absolute master at what he does. Great mention of Richard Thompson from Chuck! Always appreciate a mention of Richard. Genuinely one of the best and most original guitarists around. A fantastic witty guy with a verrrry dry sense of humour makes his live shows a must, aside from the incredible musicianship. Also check out his live cover of Britney's Oops I Did It Again, complete with "medieval" guitar break! If we're just picking big popular artists, I'd go for.. Beyonce- s/t Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour Paramore - s/t Carly Rae Jepson - Emotion Poison - Look What the Cat Dragged In

Shoot Out The Lights from 1982 is also a great album with songs like Wall of Death, Did She Jump and Man in Need to only name a few songs on this disc that is excellent from start to finish. This is a re-edited post from my Facebook page. There are no bad answers to what we all listen to outside the norm. For this segment, I played it safe with music which would catered to many of the masses of the show's subjected premises. Growing up in the South Bronx, I was very fortunate to had been witness to the birth of Hip-Hop, yet I decided to leave that out yet always willing to discuss albums that should pique the interest of the open minded listener. Kudos to all of my SOT Mates with nothing but awesome picks. I know that many have questions of a "Guilty Pleasure" yet in theory it's more like, "what do you listen to and enjoy outside the SOT Prog realm...?" and as you see we've all scratched the surface of what makes up all individuals. Great job Gents, an awesome show.

Nice with the Kendrick Lamar. As for Radiohead, I’d recommend The Bends to get started, and go chronologically from there. Context is pretty important when looking at their catalogue.

Fantastic stuff. Loved this! Such a variety in terms of what each one picked. I do really like some of the picks a lot. Huge fan of Rodrigo y Gabriella and have a really memorable anecdote. I remember wearing a Megadeth tshirt and was in the crowd. As their setlist progressed, I was holding my shirt. Gabriella saw and she all of a sudden whispered something into rodrigo's ear and next minute they played holy wars flamenco style. Really adore them for that. Gabriella is a finger player whereas Rodrigo uses the pick. My picks some of them atleast Boards of canada-the campfire headphase Juana Molina-halo Roy Harper-stormcock Fela kuti-zombie Daft punk-discovery

There's nothing wrong with a mainly prog collection either. Music is casual for some and for others a massive undertaking that requires patience and dedication. It's important that people can enjoy things that maybe are a bit more popular but in the same pendulum swing also don't feel like they have to talk about what's on the Grammys or Rolling Stone or the Hot 100 just because it's shoved constantly down our ears.

Didn't see this one coming at all. And fantastic picks from every single person on this panel, including the MIA Anthony; A select few of these picks truly surprised me, if I'm honest. Curious if Chuck is a fan of IDM (ridiculous term, imo) artists like Aphex Twin? His mention of his love for Radiohead made me think of them (an album like Kid A seemed to dabble in that aesthetic.) Steven - I am with you fully on the TV themes; I was obsessed with them as a kid, just for pure musical enjoyment. Love them, too (and the Cheers theme is one of several.) Luis: "I don't really have guilty pleasures, 'cause I don't give a shit if people don't like what I like..." A man after my own heart! Fantastic episode, guys!!!

Five totally different names I never mentioned before but are all worth discovering: Townes Van Zandt (American country, folk artist who's his lyrics make me cry and when I'm done crying I feel totally relieved) Angelo Branduardi (talented Italian guitarist and violin player, his wife wrote the lyrics and he has huge in Europe in the late seventies) Cocteau Twins (Scottish band with a complete unique post punk meets dream pop sound, fantastic guitar layers and an outstanding female vocalist) Dead Can Dance (Australian duo who sounded like Joy Division on their debut but departed totally from rock and dived into classical, medieval and worldmusic) Split Enz (always been a fan of the Finn brothers of New Zeeland, Neil going massive with Crowded House in the 80's an 90' and Tim composing some underrated solo material) ps. I'm a sucker for TV themes as well.

I should add one name to my previous list. Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, a UK synthpop duo that is known in the States for their 1986 hit If You Leave from the Pretty In Pink movie. But Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys became huge in Europe in the early 80s. On their first four albums they were goundbreaking, experimental and influential. Although they had immediate hit succes, the deep cuts from those albums are worth discovering. Synthesizers never sound cold or robotic on OMD albums: they are moody, melancholic and have a certain degree of warmth. Their 1981 Architecture & Morality album is considered to be their classic album. And if you're still reading, I can tell you that the unique OMD sound was obtained by using mellotrons (the early prog instrument par exellence) next to synthesizers. Go check it out. You might be suprised that this was the same band that wrote If You Leave.

I am most definitely a progmetal fanatic, but I grew up listening to 70s and 80s radio. All of you had some outstanding picks, many of which I also like. Trying not to repeat any already noted, here are the five non-prog/metal artists that I would pick. 1 - The Monkees (these guys just don't get enough respect) 2 - ABBA (pure pop, anyone?) 3 - k.d. lang (more specifically Ingenue, which is just an amazing album) 4 - Chuck Mangione/Herb Alpert (yes, cheating by putting in two, but both have put out some phenomenal stuff) 5 - Pigeons Playing Ping Pong (funk band and if you've never heard of them, you really should give them a try) edit: Meant to add, you have a new subscriber; just found this channel; looking forward to watching more.

I'm in my late-50s now so I really don't feel guilty about anything I listen to anymore (but I certainly did when I was younger), but as a lifelong lover of metal and hard rock, there are a few other things that I've always loved from the beginning. 1. '70s R&B and Soul. From Stevie Wonder to the Spinners to Lou Rawls to the Temptations and beyond.... 2. Glenn Campbell. Not a fan of country but I've always really enjoyed Mr. Campbell. 3. '70s soft rock....and I mean really soft. Whether it's Bread or England Dan & John Ford Coley or whatever. 4. Reggae. Don't know why but it just clicks with me. I've been to more than a few Reggae shows from local groups all the way to Peter Tosh. If I hear Reggae coming out of a beach bar (I live in S. Florida), that's probably where I'm going for brews. 5. Great vocal performances by women. Madonna or Dionne Warwick, Sarah Mclaughlin or Barbara Streisand and so forth....I don't necessarily love everything by them but there's plenty that I really enjoy.

But I also listen to Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly and other delta blues stuff. I have a soft spot for Cyndi Lauper. I saw her live back on the True Colours tour in the mid 80's and she was brilliant. Her band included Rick Derringer on guitar. She finished with a solo, unaccompanied/a capella version of True Colours and it was spine tingling. Heilung are a particular fave of mine, too. One of the best live experiences I've seen in a very long time.

There is a legend that says that Christopher Cross filled in for Richie Blackmore in the early 70's in San Antonio when Deep Purple was touring and Richie was sick. Of course that may just be a legend. And of course Dan Fogelberg was a tremendous musician. I saw him live twice. Once at Beacon Theater in early 90's with his band. And then Nassau Coliseum in 1982 when he toured as a solo artist. Just guitar, piano and a microphone. He really was a great musician. The Innocent Age is probably one of my favorite records. Not just because of the hits from that record. But everything on it is great. In The Passage is tremendous.
