I know a lot of people had questions about how to improve record time and battery life on the Sony FDR X3000. This is a short video that will guide you through the settings. If you have any questions I would love to hear from you. Please comment below!

In the early section of the video, you say that the battery time is displayed (at 1:42). This is incorrect. The time displayed is recordable time on the memory card, not battery time.

Rebecca, the best way to get better battery time is go with an external battery. Something of a PITA (what pocket gets the battery, dealing with the darn wire), but day-long shooting? Hell yeah!

the time information is not related to battery, but memory card and video settings, also I guess in order to use the remote, wifi needs to be on...

TzzSmk thank you for the comment. I did note the error in my description. Turning off the gps will help save the battery...and not using live remote full time.

okay no prob:) btw I filmed a gig with X3000 yesterday, and cam (battery) died after roughly 65 minutes, was running 1080p@30fps so I guess it should have been much longer, BUT also the weather is getting cold, so moving in/out before the gig might have dropped some battery life, although it was shown as full in the beginning? btw thx for the video, I'm still exploring all the features and I'm really happy I resisted the GoPro hype and went for X3000 :)

LIon batteries definitely lose capacity in cold weather. I keep my spares in a warm pocket until I need to install them. Cheers!

Rebecca...An awesome video for an awesome camera! Well done. A question: I have Sony's Live-View Remote view screen that I use to frame my shots in the x3000. It seems the only way to get this to work is to have both the Bluetooth and Wifi ON. I'm assuming that it requires Wifi for wireless video and Bluetooth for a control signal? In any event, thank you for your videos!

Instead of turning off wifi, bluetooth, and GPS, you can just put it in airplane mode which turns all that stuff off at once.

True but then you won’t be able to use your live view remote.

Yes that is true. I put it in airplane mode when I'm not going to use the camera for a long time. If you leave all that stuff on, the battery will go dead on the camera in a few days because the camera is looking for the remote, and killing the battery at the same time. So when I am ready to use the camera again, I turn it on manually, and take it off airplane mode and everything is back on. I can then turn it back off and use the remote to turn it on later. If you use the camera a lot, you may not notice that the battery goes dead with the camera off after a few days.

Panotaker soooo true! With this cam...Even with ways to not waste battery...I still have to have extra batteries. Luckily the wasabi batteries are pretty cheap. (Not as good as Sony, but they will get me by for the day)

I thoguth the time shown is the time that (accourding to settings) is the max time you can record in the given SD card. (like in the 99% of the video camera out there). I might be wrong since i dont have this camera yet

Turn off Bluetooth = unabel to connect to live view, right?

Correct. I do use my live view remote...but more for “blocking” my subject. I try to keep it off if possible. Especially if you are mounting it to something live a helmet or handle bar, it’s pretty easy to see where it is pointing. Plus if keeping it in 4k...you can punch/zoom in on your final product in editing and still have great quality.

What is the best way to delete the video files after you transfer them to your computer? Can you do that in the camera or do you delete them from the computer? Thanks

Hi Rebecca, I have a question about when the camera is switched off. I observed that after a full charge of camera battery, if I do not use it for 10 days, the charge goes off completely. Is this normal? Or do you think that the battery/camera might be defective? Have you experienced a similar thing?

Better to run them down if not in use...or take out completely from camera. If you take it out it should still hold charge.

Where did you get the wind cover for that? For extra power I usually just attach my external usb power supply when needed for longer hikes. Can charge it and shoot at the same time.

are you using more than one to cover the mic area? and are you using the felt also under the dead cat furry material

thanks for the reply. From the amazon page, there are 8 of these "dead cat" covers in the package. Are they large enough so that just 1 of the 8 "dead cats" covers the full microphone area on the front of the X3000 or are you using several of them together to cover the mic area? The kit also has 15 adhesive rings and 4 felt patches. The adhesive rings, felt patches and "dead cats" are all separate from each other. With your setup or the setup you found to have the best results, are you using the felt patch AND the dead cat or just the dead cat without the felt patch under it?

I have been looking for a video to be able to live stream my son's basketball games. 80% sure I need a caption card ( have not purchased yet). And have found a video of someone making it work but it looked like it was a older Sony model. They were using a free software in their laptop to post online... any comments or suggestions

davidxroxy when I stream from my laptop I use camlink for my dslr...I just ordered the new Osmo Pocket. You can live stream if your phone is attached. Where are you streaming? Fb? Yt?

@@RebeccaMeyerI'm going to try to call lagato/camlink tomorow. It don't show if the sony cam is supported or not, but I do see most of the gopro there. I don't realy need to stream my son's b-ball games more I just want to see if I can.

For a game I would use something that can zoom (video camera) with the camlink (you would have to use your labtop though.

Do the Wasabi batteries last any better or longer than the Sony batteries ? Ugh. My first generation GoPro's battery lasts for my full run. This new camera's battery doesn't last much more than an hour so far, although it has been -11C for the last couple of runs. My GoPro also charges in considerably less time, I think in about an hour. I read that this one takes almost 5 hours to recharge via the computer cable !!! Good grief !! Does a battery charger take less time to charge the battery ? If so, which kind of charger ? Is there any way to extend the battery somehow or use something else that would last longer ? It's a nuisance to have to stop and change a battery or have it just die in the middle of a run.

wr999en I actually just use a wall charger from another Sony cam I have. I don’t believe it’s 5 hours though?!?! Can’t tell you the exact time, but I think that is incorrect. I got a 2 pack wasabi battery charger...they last about the same time. Turning off your gps will help save battery life.
