I mean what a crazy prequel!! I had no idea this film was going to have such a frightening story full of rituals and sacrifices. Totally makes sense why it's called "...the temple of doom". Enjoy :)

A common misconception with Temple is that Willie, as a love interest, pales in comparison to Marion. But the thing is, Willie is not a love interest. That's just a fling. The real love story (not in THAT way, of course), is between Indy and Short Round.

@lennyvalentin6485
@lennyvalentin6485 Месяц назад
She's deliberately intended to be a parody of all the screaming ladies we saw in action/adventure movies of the past. So they (IE: the movie makers) deliberately dialed her up to 11, and Cate Capshaw did a fabulous job as this vapid, self-absorbed woman who was completely out of her waters for essentially the entire movie. I always did like her both as a character and an actress, and understood Willie's role in the story, even back in my youth. But yeah, chill she is not! :D The scene where she's hanging laundry to dry and her hands come up holding a giant chittering bat never fail to make me laugh! lol

I know the vast majority of the Indy Die-Hards (especially those who prefer Last Crusade) have mixed feelings on this film due to it being darker than _Raiders of the Lost Ark_ (which resulted in the creation of the PG-13 rating afterwards) Kate Capshaw’s performance as Willie Scott (which I can somewhat agree to a degree), among other things, but I love the fact that it was much different than the other installments and let’s be real Ke Huy Quan as Short Round is one of the best sidekicks Indiana Jones had and it was very heartwarming that when they were promoting the fifth Indiana Jones film at D23, Ke reunited and met Harrison Ford backstage with Harrison saying _"Are you Short Round?"_ to which Ke Huy said _"Yes Indy, I’m Short Round"_ and they got a picture. Not to mention when _Everything, Everywhere, All at Once_ (which you should react to at some point) won Best Picture both Ke Huy and Harrison reunited once more. But overall in my unpopular opinion I enjoyed this one more than Last Crusade.

What you say is true, but there are those who especially like this one. I'm not exactly one of them, but I do think that the first quarter hour (until the raft goes ashore) is one of the best openings any action movie ever had, brilliantly staged. And yes, Ke Huy Quan gives one of the best child performances ever, and it's been wonderfully satisfying to see his career revive and get awarded, all these years later.
@FrancisXLord

I enjoy it more than Raiders. Personally I've always thought they played it safe with the Last Crusade, following the critical mauling that the Temple of Doom took. Despite the critics, of course, the Temple of Doom would sell more tickets than any Indy film bar the first. Nowadays they likely wouldn't care less what the critics said, there are far more critics with far less influence than there were back then.

@@DelGuy03 I know, it’s just that the majority of the Indiana Jones fandom especially the "Indy Die-Hards" who *ONLY* liked the first three films in the franchise they just say either the first film (Raiders of the Lost Ark) or especially _Last Crusade_ was their favorite film while _Temple of Doom_ was their "least favorite". Of course, that is "subjective", because although _Temple of Doom_ wasn’t hated I’ve seen some audience and a few of the "Indy Die-Hards" have mixed reception towards it when the film first came out and after it came out compared to audience’s reception towards _Raiders of the Lost Ark)_ and especially _Last Crusade,_ they either loved _Temple of Doom_ or hated it.

The deal with Indy's motivations in this movie is that it seems to be he went from a treasure hunter to a protector of history and culture. This movie shows where that transition takes place and sets the stage for the other stories and his more heroic persona. This is also why some advocate for watching the films in chronological order as Indy's character arc makes more sense.

Harrison Ford severely injured his back and they had to stop filming for months. The opening scene at Lao Che’s Club Obi Wan was filmed after he came back from the injury. Mythbusters actually tested surviving a jump with the inflateable liferaft. The problem is it would be all to easy for it to flip over and toss you off in the fall. Another great review! Concerning your comments on Indy's focus on fortune and glory and his skepticism toward spiritual things in the first movie: Rob Walker of Channel Awesome did a full-length delving into this topic in a video called "Raiding Indy's Lost Character Arc." It's definitely something I'd recommend checking out (after you've finished watching the rest of the series since there are spoilers). Also, if you're interested, the big Thuggee guy who got crushed is played by the late Pat Roach, who also played the buff German mechanic in the first movie who got shredded by the plane propellers (and even has a minor role as a Gestapo agent in the third movie). Just thought I'd throw that out there, too.

Red Dawn was the first PG-13 movie. I don't think it had anything to do with the rating's creation. I heard the rating was actually Spielberg's suggestion. Spielberg said back then he didn't make R rated films (Schindler's List would be his first), and he always seemed to be pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable in PG films leading to fight after fight against R-ratings. PG-13 was a compromise effectively.

"Oh my god, the Wilhelm scream again" you probably know this, but at the time of this movie the Wilhelm scream wasn't such a borderline-oversaturated cinematic joke like it is now, it was pretty much just one guy that was sprinkling it into all the movies he worked on as a little running gag or Easter egg - Bill Burtt, who was the sound designer on this film (and only worked on 10 movies before this, some of which didn't have much call for screaming). It mostly took off because of his use of it in Star Wars and Indiana Jones (it had been in sound libraries since the 50s, but it was basically just one scream amongst many until Burtt made it his signature).

Good reaction Oscar! Of the original trilogy, this was my least favourite not just because of the horror voodoo stuff BUT for the following reason: As an Indian born & raised in Zimbabwe 🇿🇼, it was super rare to find Indian representation on the big screen or little screen in anything Hollywood made. So as a kid in the late 80’s watching this scary movie, it was disappointing to show that representation as demonic. So a lot of people at that time who had no knowledge of Indian culture would be influenced by not just the demonic voodoo stuff but the monkey brains or slithery eels in that dreadful dinner scene. This was pre-internet and before India and its rich culture became a global power. Anyway, the film does have an ultimate standout and that is Ke Huy Quan who plays the loveable “Short Round” who also was a standout in The Goonies 😍(“Goonies never say die‼️”). Ke Huy Quan finally got the recognition he richly deserved 39 years later by winning the Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once! ♥️ Beautiful talented person who got shoved aside by Hollywood until EEAAO. His speeches and interviews after every award win are so endearing and make me cry. Just so happy for him! ♥️ You will love The Last Crusade - my fav of all 5 movies. Look forward to that reaction!

Kate Capshaw, who played Willie in this movie, later married Steven Spielberg. The dress she wore while performing the opening sequence was a one-of-a-kind dress that had been made with beads and sequins from the 1920s and was historically significant. Unfortunately, during shooting, one of the elephants got ahold of the dress (while Capshaw wasn't wearing it), and chewed it up. The costume designer, who was responsible for filling out the insurance claim afterward, had to put "eaten by elephant" on the claim form.

But yeah, this is very much Indy in his opportunistic treasure-hunter phase, where he was very much guilty of the kinds of things that he would tell other archeologists off for in the other movies. It's kind of cool to see his character progression over the years.

also in the outtake, short round had seen one of the thuggee guards land accidentally on a torch and wake up and run out of the mining area. that's how he knew how to help indy.

37:50 to 37:57 - Notice how Indy was doing pull-ups as he swung from the platform to the mine cart to join Willy and Shortround? (Look at the position of his arms throughout the 7 seconds.)

In the next movie of the triology (The Last Cursade) you'll find out why he is afraid of snakes. And somewhere in the movie he is asked from someone "Can you fly?" "Fly? Yes! Land? No!" it seems he learnt to fly at the beginning oft this movie (Temple of Doom)

This is my favourite Indy film, i love the dark tone, and some of the epic set pieces like the bridge scene. The scene 34:38 where Indy goes back for the kids and camera panning upto him in the mines (along with the awesome score), gives me chills everytime and is my all time favourite movie moment! Great reaction, look forward to the next.

After working with my best friend as equipment managers for our high school football team, I nicknamed him "Short Round" because he was, well, shorter than me, he was my 'sidekick', even though we were technically equals, and his snappy comebacks were equal to this kid's. The name has stuck thirteen years on LOL

I think which one is your favorite depends on when you see them. I always loved Last Crusade the most, because this one scared me shitless as a kid and I was disturbed by the idea of being in that rack and lowered into lava. And the Last Crusade has become a favorite mostly because as I get older, the rebuilding of a parent relationship really resonates with me.

Yes the rock did help the village; to activate them they need to be near each other or the incantation in hindi. Indy says a phrase in hindi and it mentions shiva.

To answer your question about the roller-coaster, there is 😊 not sure if any of the US parks have a version, but Disneyland Paris has a ride called Le Temple Du Peril, which is Temple of Doom. Very short ride, like 3 minutes, and only one looping, but it's out door and has sudden drops that especially harrowing if you're seated at the very front. It's a fan favourite to do at night, 'cause they light the torches around the ride, gives it all the Indiana Jones vibes.

Disneyland has an Indiana Jones ride. It's been a long time since I've been but I vaugely remember it being a mixture of movie rather than it soley being a temple of doom inspired.

Yeah, Indy knows that he needs to keep appearing as a sceptic, as if he admitted (even to Marcus at the beginning of Raiders) that he's seen "stuff," he could lose his credibility. So, he keeps that info to himself. And GREAT CATCH of the kid that was in the cell was now a Thuggee too after drinking the blood. Yours may be the first reaction to catch that little detail. Finally, thanks for not hating on WIllie - I love her "fish out of water" ride during the film. Not all companions are Marion and touch as nails. And Willie leads to a lot of fun comedy!

1:39 1:40 1:41 1:45 1:46 if you’re wondering why he was so concerned about that diamond is because that diamond was a MacGuffin from “the adventures of young Indiana Jones” (A prequel TV show) The diamond’s name is “the peacocks eye”.
@johnmaster3748
@johnmaster3748 Месяц назад
This film is 1984. The TV series was 1992-94. So any backstory from the tv show was retrofit later. Doesn't make you wrong. But it also has nothing to do with interpreting this film from the perspective of viewers in the 1980s. Indy is concerned with the diamond...because the script says so. It's provenance bespeaks another adventure, offscreen, we can only imagine. E.g., Indy has crazy adventures we know nothing of. The tv answer is almost certainly less fun than leaving the answer open.
